I have a question concerning Cosplay. I consider Cosplay to include any sex of a character to pretty much anyone from a video game, book, movie, anime, manga or comic.
Since Cosplay is "Costume Play" and includes dressing and acting like a character, why is there the term called "Cross Play"? Doesn't Cosplay cover this with the broad open definition of Costume Play or are people confusing it with when people Cosplay but change the sex of the Character?
Is this "Cross Play" a real term used in Japan, or is it just a Gaijin interpretation, kind of like the word "Otaku?" outside of Japan?

Okay, so here's my definition. Cosplay is when a person dresses and acts like a character. Crossplay is if they take a character and dress as that character if it were of the opposite gender. So, like if you were playing Cloud from Kingdom Hearts as if he were a female. Or if you were playing Sailor Moon as though she were a male. Different from cosplay in that you are changing who the character is and making it sort of your own.

Agreed. I believe cosplay encompasses everything there is about dressing up/acting as your favorite character. I guess cross play would be like a sub-category of the type of cosplay you could do. I think of it as if a person of the opposite sex decides to cosplay as someone from the opposite sex. Like a good example would be if a guy decided to dress up as Kairi. Or a girl dresses up as Kakashi. I don't know if it's an official term in Japan, but I guess it kinda exists no matter where it is.

When we were at our convention last year the cityfolk were saying some pretty mean stuff. (What I mean by this is shouting obscenities at us from the other side of the mall-way) One of the things they called us was perverse. I wonder if this is more what they meant because we were cosplaying as male characters. Did they take us for transvestites? Even if they did I consider that unacceptable. xp
Anyway, I agree with everyone else here about the taking the character out of their natural sex being crossplay. But on the other hand I know a lot of people who like to say it's not that sooo.... I feel like they're wrong and we're right kind of thing xD
