Bryna pressed her nose close to the ground, eyes scanning for further tracks. The rabbit she was tracking had come by here not too long ago.

Bryna needed distance from her pack, a moment or two to herself, and finding a snack seemed to be a worthwhile way to spend her time while she got a little distance from the strangers who were now both her responsibility as Beta, and her family as a member of Draug Faroth. It was a blessing to have found the pack, to have been lucky enough to be what the pack needed in a Beta. It was a blessing as much for them as for her, of course, as strong minds were needed to help the Alphas run things, but none the less, Bryna couldn't help a bit of wonder over whether

Her feet followed the edge of a stream as her eyes scanned for signs of a rabbit in its winter coat. She was on the hunt. Her thoughts wouldn't distract her from the necessary task at hand. She was a bit farther from the den than she had usually explored. She'd have to see if Triton had come this way in his exploration of the lands, or if he'd be willing to tour them with her as they got comfortable in their new home.

The sound of a rustling in the leaves drew her attention and she froze with a foot lifted, looking and listening for the sound.

Rustle. Crack, rustle.

Bryna hunkered down, her body still as she found her prey and waited to see if it would move closer. She gave it a minute, and then crept forward, freezing and hunkering again as the rabbit looked up, seeming to sense it was being watched. Its little nose twitched.

The wind had changed so she was now upwind.

In an attempt to salvage the hunt Bryna sprang forward with a small snarl and, after a very short chase, snatched the rabbit's body in her jaws, ignoring its foot kicking her jaw frantically as she crunched down. The little creature stopped moving, but, just to be sure, Bryna set it down and neatly broke its neck. She wouldn't want her meal to suffer after giving its life to be her meal.

A small female wolf was lingering in a pack territory. After leaving her pack and journeying far, she had become the tough soldier others wouldn't of thought her as. She could fight well, kill prey well, and was quite the silent stalker. In fact, she was quietly watching a female herself, who seemed to sit a tad higher than most wolves. A beta for sure. The air around her just smelled of it. Satisfied with what she chose to stalk, Thamini crouched, the yellowish green orbs danced with curiosity. What pack land was she in? And would they cast her out? They wouldn't for sure. They couldn't possibly. Look at her tough muscle and her ability. Something her old pack never saw.

The past was the past though. Thamini would have to leave it behind if she wanted to move on and get a well respected position. Not as a lowly servant to others but as an equal where she would obey orders to a certain extent. She would not be abused this way ever again.

The female had caught that rabbit swiftly, snapping its neck to end its suffering. How kind of her. The gentleness was nice. Was she a softy like she was before or did she have that gentle side to her personality? Unknowingly, Thamini had actually edged herself closer. Snap! Thamini cursed in her head and stepped forward, her head high.

"Hello," she said.

Bryna dropped the rabbit as she turned to face the wolf head on. Her muscles were tensed, but otherwise there was no sign of surprise or hostility. Her snack would have been a hindrance, and if this wasn't a friendly encounter-- although few wolves who had ill-intent announced their presence with a greeting-- she didn't want to have her mouth full.

"Hello." It bothered Bryna that she hadn't sensed the wolf until a few seconds before a broken twig alerted her. And the female had gotten too close for it to have just been a bad wind direction. She lifted her chin and gave the black-and-white visitor a looking over. "Welcome to Draug Faroth. Were you looking for something? Or were you unaware you had crossed into packlands?"

Adult female, silent and she appeared to be healthy. Gamma. Bryna wished the wind were blowing from another direction so she could catch the wolf's scent.

"Oh, nothing." she said sharply. Thamini could see that the female was a little alarmed at her intrusion and perhaps defensive. The black and white patterned female glanced behind the gray furred femme. Nothing and no one was behind her. Good. If things went wrong then she would not have an unfair disadvantage.

"Draug Faroth. How many are in this pack? I don't join big packs. They disinterest me," Thamini stated seriously. Big packs always meant bigger hierarchies. Which for Thamini, reminded her of the days she served other prissy wolves who were too lazy to do their own jobs. She wouldn't of mind doing it for them if they gave her credit but no they would make up some story saying how they had done it all day while Thamini would laze around. It was what made her leave. No respect, no credit. That's what the femme wanted and if she didn't get it she'd leave and you'd hear no trace of her. After all, she was quite quiet and that theory proved itself just now.

Bryna's brows shifted slightly in surprise. Throwing back almost accusative questions was an unusual way to reply to a greeting or question. The female was certainly blunt about what she wanted, no hesitation or finery to her words.

Good. Bryna liked forthrightness.

"Our pack, for now, is small. Haku considers his pack family, and that works better with a small pack than a large one, though I doubt we would ever turn away members as long as they were willing to accept the values we prize. We're a close knit pack." Bryna relaxed slightly. The female didn't seem to mean her harm, and it was clear she was looking for a pack to join and hadn't found any to her liking yet. Maybe Bryna, and Draug Faroth, could change that. "I'm Bryna, the female Beta of Draug Faroth. Who are you?"

And so this could be it. She would try it and if she liked it, she would stay, if she wanted. Nobody would stop her from leaving and nobody was going to make her do what she didn't want to do.

"Thamini. Show me to your pack then," she said and looking straight into the eyes of the beta, "Bryna."

The poise of the black and white female showed no weakness or of submitting to power. Thamini would show them her own power. Not in a way that would threaten the high ranks, but it would show the others she wasn't one to be picked on. Never ever again would that happen.

That was going beyond the bounds of forthrightness. Bryna's hackles went up again slightly. She was happy to assist any wolf, but a Gamma-- which she was almost sure the female was-- behaving like an Alpha, ordering her about as if she were nothing, was unacceptable. Perhaps if it wasn't for the eye contact Bryna wouldn't have thought of it that way, but it felt like a challenge and, being so new in her position, she wasn't about to deal with challenges. She had to make it known that she was to be respected by packmates and strangers alike.

Triton entered her mind as she remembered a similar circumstance seasons ago, remembered how he had stopped her then, and she pushed herself not to let her tongue entirely loose. Pushed herself to be... polite. Thamini may not have realized she was doing it at all, especially if she wasn't usually a full dominant.

"Perhaps you haven't noticed that you are a guest in our lands for the moment," Bryna pointed out, staring Thamini down. "I don't expect you to blindly scrape and bow because I am a Beta, but I am a Beta. If you want to be a part of our pack, family structure or not, you must understand we still have ranks. There are still Alphas, there are still Betas, and you will have to accept that if you join our pack you'll have to follow our Alpha's lead and show respect where respect is due." She eyed the other female and her hackles went down. It wasn't supposed to be a challenge, or at least she didn't think it was. With a dip of her head, she snagged the rabbit she'd killed and threw it to Thamini delicately so that it landed close to, but not entirely in, her personal space, lest it startle her-- not that Thamini seemed likely to startle. "Here. Have something to eat. If, when you are through and have thought that over, you are still interested, we can return and speak to Haku. I suggest, however, you tone down your attitude before you offend someone."

Bryna sat back on her haunches to wait for Thamini's response and/or snacking. Another wolf would be a blessing, but if she just walked back to camp with some strange Gamma ordering her around she would not just lose face, but possibly her temper as well. Best to let things settle first, and see if the female was willing to at least be cordial if not submissive. Submissiveness wasn't always a positive trait, after all.

She smiled. Thamini could see this beta had earned her respect. Good good, she would like Bryna.

"You are good. A good beta. I respect that," commented the black and white wolf. Slowly she lowered her maw down and gave a small bite at the rabbit, all the while looking at Bryna.

Satisfied with the snack, Thamini sat there looking around. For now, she was pleased with the way Draug Faroth was running, from what she could see from the Beta. Suppose she could be less, forceful. A softer approach maybe?

"Well, shall we go?" she asked and added,"If you would like."

Bryna nodded and rose to her feet. The bones and remaining fur of the rabbit remained on the ground, food for crows and small scavengers. Thankfully, that conversation had gone well, and Thamini seemed to understand-- and accept-- how things worked. A new member then, one Bryna thought Haku might be pleased with. Fresh blood to help him fill out the pack and assist in hunts. That was something Bryna had missed until she joined Draug. Big pack hunts.

"Follow me." She turned and headed straight for the main pack. If she was lucky, he would already be awake and she wouldn't have to interrupt his sleep in order to introduce Thamini and find her a place to stay. "I'll introduce you to Haku and find you a place to den in. I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to meet the rest of the pack this evening."

Nodding, Thamini followed closed behind. She assumed Haku was the Alpha male. She also assumed that she would get her own den, which meant better sleep. More warmth, the one thing Thamini lacked.

As they approached the clearing, Thamini said, "Wait," and paused. She took a few breaths, shaking herself and clearing her throat. So the wolf was a little nervous, but wasn't everyone always a bit nervous when meeting new people? Putting that thought aside, Thamini looked back at Bryna.

"Okay, I think I'm ready," she said and gave a small smile. A nice smile at that.
