The miniature ebony mare hovered over a patch of daffodils, amber eyes bright with mirth. She stuck out her tongue once more, trying to reach the sweet nectar that lay like buried treasure beneath the daffodil's shimmering petals... alas, her tongue was not long enough. It was made for crushing grass and other equine treats against the roof of her mouth, not reaching into flowers and sipping nectar like one of the butterflies she resembled.

Oh, well...

Of course, she could simply force her way between the petals, jamming her tongue through so that she might savor the nectar that lay within... but in so doing, she would destroy the very thing she had come to admire. She couldn't fathom destroying the beautiful flowers... and so she would make do with equine treats.

With a heartfelt sigh, she flew in meandering circles around the flowerbed, her thoughts wandering freely.

Not far off, in a sun-lit woodland glen, a sleeping Cerynei stirred lazily.

He had traveled far the night before, seeking a quiet resting place that was not already occupied. Having found a suitable location, he had immediately flung himself to the ground... and promptly began to snore.

He had returned in search of his mother, whom he had not seen since he had ventured forth to travel the Kawani lands in search of... well, something more amusing than dirt and Flutters.
And oh, he had found it! In the form of a quaint mare clearly in her prime, soft and sweet... gentle as a soft wind's sighing caress... oh, how he longed to introduce her to his family!

But he had to find them first... and that was taking quite some time.

His pronged head nestled upon a soft bed of moss, he murmured quietly to himself, lost in a dream scape of his own design.

The serpentine mare pawed the ground with fierce disdain, frowning to herself. A low growl emitted from her throat, echoing her stomach's demands. Lips pulled back in a silent snarl, she stalked forward, opaque gaze darting to and fro in search of sustenance.

Ripe apples hung from a laden tree, glistening in the early-morning sun. Lush grass swayed in the gentle wind.

She snorted dismissively. What use had she for apples? Grass? She was no plant-eater... her teeth glistened as she imagined a ripe, fresh kill.

A nearby forest held promise of such... exquisite... succulent... mmmmmeat. Her mouth watered.

Her stomach rumbling insistently, she stalked forwards, into the still forest canopy.

Eamonn peered down at his reflection.

Strong features. Sturdy frame. Piercing blue eyes, staring from behind a generous swath of silky mane. ... Handsome, if one were to be so blunt.
He had nothing to complain about.

And yet... his coat. So alike that of his simpering mother, lost in her own delusions, so distant and vague that she barely registered the presence of her own children. Soft dapples, a thousand shades of grey...

He looked away, ashamed to be so marked as one of her kin.

Maybe some day, she would do something her could be proud of. Until then... she was his life-giver, nothing more.

He strode into the forest, determined to find something- anything!- to take his mind off of his... unique... family life.

Tiahana drifted guilessly, her flight-pattern indiscernible. She let the quiet wind guide her movements, responding to the gentle tugs and pulls of nature's breath.

Slowly, steadily making her way through the broad expanse of trees, she came upon a place where the wind... stopped. Amber eyes flickering as she registered the lack of movement, she frantically fluttered her wings to stay aloft. No more drifting... ah, well.

She peered around the glade, smiling slightly as she considered flying back into the breeze.

A strangely familiar hearty snore, deafening at this close range, toppled the minuscule mare, sending her momentarily off-balance.

Amber eyes twinkling merrily, she let out a tinkling laugh, wheeling about to face the source of the snore.

The slumbering Cerynei snorted and settled back into position, oblivious to his mother's presence.

Tiahana darted forwards, hovering before her son's face. Ohh, she was so glad to see him! She'd though he'd gone... left... fled... away! But no, here he was, in this glade, sleeping... sleeping, at such an early hour. Oh, lazy boy! Silly boy! No, boy no more. For she had grown. She had forgotten; that was why he had left. No longer a colt, the full-grown (though slightly undersized compared to a true forest-dweller) stallion had ventured forth in search of... adventure, was it?

She silenced the chattering thoughts that ricocheted around in her mind, a stiffed squeal expressing her delight.

Shhh! Musn't wake him... Just wait. Wait 'til he's rested, then... then we ca play!

Eyes twinkling merrily, Tiahana landed at an angle, carefully avoiding the
'danger zone' directly in front of her son's deadly snore.

Yep... wait!

The stallion in question slumbered on, undisturbed by the flutter's quiet entrance.

Wait... come back! He laughed, chasing after Makayla's fleeing form, cloven hooves flailing in the air as he reared with enthusiasm.
Little minx! She darted around the wide trunks and skirted about the fallen logs with such grace, her lithe form able to cut through the air with more precision than his bulkier frame (it was times like these that he pouted over his distinguished horns- he had once been so proud of their length!)

... It made playing tag incredibly difficult.

They wheedled away the hours together, laughing and playing like children amidst the sun-warmed forest.

He drew in a breath in what would have been a sigh- had his left nostril not been crushed between his skull and the mossy grass.

Instead, a second hearty snore erupted from his blissful frame.

Tiahana stiffled a giggle.

Valkyrie snapped to attention, ears perked as the monstrous sound ripped through the early-morning air.

Bestial in nature? No... too lackadaisical. It was more akin to the pleasant snoring of a half-wit than any growl or bellow she had ever heard.

... Prey?

Nostrils flaring lightly as she sought to pick up the scent of her intended prey, she slithered forwards with all the grace of a natural-born hunter, intent on her next meal.

Eamonn wandered listlessly, striding forwards with no clear purpose in mind.

What use was it? This life? If his thoughts were to be forever preoccupied with memories he had no use for, forgotten longings of a warm, gentle person who was always happy to be in his presence... lost hopes, lost dreams.

He shook his head violently, seeking to rid himself of such thoughts.

Ah, now she was seeping into his very being! He was being as melodramatic, as hopelessly self-absorbed, as she!

With stern resolve, he focused instead on the sounds of the forest. Surely he could not make nature itself revolve around his own concerns!

Birdsong... crackling leaves...

She flashed a deadly smile, stretching her limber muscles as she stalked towards the sound.

Mmm... so close...

She lightened her movements, supporting herself with her wings, gliding almost soundlessly through the trees. Before long, she came to a sheltered glade... a quaint little... home.

She suppressed a victorious snarl as she came upon the slumbering Cerynei. She would eat well tonight.

... ah, but what was this? Valkyrie narrowed her eyes at the orange and amber form... ahhhh. A flutter.

... Appetizer and main course?

Deliciousssssss.

... was that a snore?

Eamonn frowned lightly to himself, wondering what in all the lands would make a sound like that so early in the morning.

... perhaps it had a stomach ache?

With a graceless pivot, he changed directions, heading towards that outlandish sound.

Tiahana attempted to stifle another giggle as her son let out another chest-wrenching snore, but a sibilant twitter escaped despite her best efforts. She quickly hid her head against the grass, attempting to smother her amusement in the grass.

As she wrestled with her self-control, she considered the implications of her son's rather ambitious sleep patterns.

Tuari Tse muttered to himself and shifted his weight, stiffening mid-roll and pawing at the air before collapsing in a heap on his other side.

Peeking at him from between her half-lidded gaze, she smiled fondly. Silly boy!

Less pleasant thoughts wrestled their way to the forefront of her consideration.
At this rate, every creature in the forest would hear her son before long! Maybe she should wake him, after all... she wouldn't want her son to be caught unaware by the more unpleasant inhabitants of this forest.

Tuari Tse snorted and wriggled his nose, trying to dislodge a wandering ant that had braved the 'winds' and scurried curiously across his rather wide nostrils.

Tiahana giggled and fluttered forwards, spinning in tight little circles as she moved towards her son's ear.

Mid-spin, she saw a rather strange dark-blue-ish thing at the glade's opening. The river was rather further downwind, and the sky wasn't nearly that dark...Frowing, she circled once more and spun about to face it.

Uhoh.

With a shrill whinny, she darted towards her son and flailed frantically, pummeling him with her tiny hooves.

"wakeupwakeupwakeup!!!"

In her panic, she forgot that she could simply change size.

A slow, lazy smile spread across her face. Her eyes flashed maliciously.

Ahh.
She watched the frantic little flutter, sneering to herself. Silly little thing... working up a sweat to avoid the inevitable? Well... the salty-sweet tang of fresh blood would not be soured by a little fresh sweat.

Eamonn's ears flickered as the sound reached him. A high-pitched, whining buzz... it sounded somewhat familiar.

With a slight frown, he moved faster, powerful haunches propelling him towards the whine that had joined the earlier gaping snore.

It sounded... wrong.

Lashing her tail through the air, she began to stalk forwards, a disturbing grin distorting her fine-honed features.

Tiahana continued to shrill incessantly at her son, mind rushing frantically as she fought to regain some semblance of self control.

Ahh, no! To think, she had been so careless as to allow a... a... well, a spikey Kalona to sneak up on her- and her son! Oh, Tuari! -"WAKE UP!!!"

Tuari Tse halted mid-snort, his ears flickering lazily as that all too familiar voice cut into his sub-conscience.

"M... ma?" He muttered, peering at her through one half-lidded eye, his face the picture of confusion. "Whuzz... whuzzamatta?" he rolled onto his side, a huge yawn interrupting his query.

Oh thank goodness.

"GET UP! GET UP GET UPGETP! RUNRUNRUN FLEE GO AWAY NOW NOW NOW!!" she squealed, fluttering frantically and hovering at eye level.

Tuari Tse frowned, staring at his mother in disbelief. When had she gotten here?

... more importantly, why did he have to run? He was sleepy... he didn't want to run...

He yawned and blinked lazily, surveying the land about him for any signs of his mother's disturbance.

And anyway, why did he have to run when...

Oh.

Ohhhhh.

No sooner had the hunter's presence registered had he clambered to his hooves and stood, panting, slightly off-balance after the sudden awakening.

"Right.... Right!" He stumbled towards the beast, then realized his mistake and toppled off in the other direction.

"Right!" He gathered his legs beneath him, preparing to leap into a gallop.

Tiahana fluttered about his head, casting frantic glances over her shoulder at the draconic she-devil.

Not my son, you don't!
