Yet again Calibor had helped Searlait to escape the watchful eyes of her brother Arthur. On most days he expected her to follow him around like an innocent bird incapable of fending for itself so that he may watch over her. She knew he harbored only the best of intentions but she was young, spirited and wanted nothing more than to venture out into this vast new world she had only recently entered. There were just so many things to see and do, so many ways for the imagination of a foal to run rampant over the land. Peeking over her shoulder she double checked that Arthur had, in fact, not seen her leave. When she was satisfied she trotted off into the distant meadow and headed for the grove of tall trees that were silhouetted against the horizon. This grove, ordinary to the eyes of adults, seemed ordinary without any magic to it at all. Searlait saw it as so much more, this grove had protected her from the evil lions of Darfur, the Ogres of Midland, the angered pixies of Alloway forest and most importantly the overprotective older brother monster. With a smile upon her face she picked up the pace until she reached a lope, eager to reach her treasure chest of creation.

Her gate slowed as the bark on the trees became visible and her hooves touched the soft earth along the treeline. As though a key were inserted into a lock and turned her imagination was let out of the box and she leapt behind a tree. Her mind began going through the vast array of creatures her sister Fearthainn had shared with her until settling upon her enemy. Goblins! Little green creatures crawling around on all fours and drooling acidic saliva that smelled like a bog. They hadn’t seen her yet but she watched as they tilted their malformed noses into the air in order to catch her scent. They had been after her for days and her supplies were running low but they had trapped her in what little cover the meadow provided. Drawing back behind a bush she kept a wary eye out beyond the trees as she attempted to think up a plan of action.

Ahote’s head peeked around the corner of the tree again; good none of his siblings had taken on the edge to follow him to see where he was going. This by far was one of best ideas he had ever come up with! To wander the tree like lands while pretending to play hide and go seek with his brother and sisters, why didn’t he think of this earlier? Sure Ardius was probably going to run to father as soon as he noticed that Ahote was nowhere to be found and sure his father would probably murder him later but for now that was the least of his problems. He was free! Free to explore what possibilities these tall looming giants had hidden under their gigantic leaves and branches. He was only allowed to visit this part of their home once and that was with their father taking them along on a rather boring survival sort of guide trip, not to mention his older brother’s extra set of eyes kept him from slipping away like he wanted to. Ruining plans always seemed to occur at their worst possible time. OH his brothers were going to be so peeved when they found out where he had taken off to, cheating is what his sister would have called it but she usually let him slide by and never had the heart to ignore him for the entire night. His brothers and father on the other hand…

Bah humbug, why should he think of them at a time like this? He thought as he leapt over the fallen log, bugs seemed to inch their bodies across in a scramble the trembling earth. A chuckle escaped from his lips as he peered looking over them, they were rather amusing to watch, each of them had a different color, odd amount of legs and one was rather furry which seemed to curl into a ball has his breath rolled across its back. Giving a grin Ahote let the bugs be as he continued on nosing over leaves and peeking his head around various trees. The woodlands seemed so vast and interconnected but at the same time so small and tiny with everything centered around their own little worlds. It was like a secret place that only he saw with his own eyes and like a special adventurer!

All was quiet in Searlait’s hiding place as she watched the ominous creatures sniff about for her location. Her cream ears were perked as she listened intently for one misstep of the enemy, or for a sneak attack of any kind. Her nostrils flared as she imagined the scent of their goopy saliva floating on the breeze that barely reached beyond the treeline. A sound to her right caused her to flinch and her head to whip around in an attempt to see what was coming for her. Her eyes rest upon what looked to be a colt of relatively her same age. With one last peer over her shoulder at the goblins she began sneaking carefully through the grove. Her eyes shifted from her feet to the target before her, she was careful as to how she moved her feet so as not to make a sound to alert the goblins of her movements. As she drew closer she halted a moment to observe in order to be sure this wasn’t some kind of trick of the mind. Her brown eyes watched the colt as he stared down at something and walked along, completely oblivious to the danger surrounding him. Again shooting a glance back to be sure she wasn’t being followed she began moving toward him. Stopping next to a thick trunk beside him she attempted to quietly get his attention. “Pssssst!”

Her ears flicked back to listen for any sounds behind her. When she couldn’t pick up even a murmur she inched forward until she placed herself in the middle of his path. Much like her sister Fearthainn, Searlait had no sense of propriety in a first meeting sort of situation. Rather than giving someone their space she would march right up to them, closing the distance and invading the personal bubble. This colt was no different and she only stopped when she was nearly nose to nose with him. “Shhhh. You will give away our position.” She whispered. “They are out there right this minute, trying to find the best route into my hideout.”

He was in his own little world, keeping his pace up watching the looming trees with their branches stretching out across the winded path casting shadows across the sunny ground. He was trying to imagine what it was like to be that big, how it was to almost reach the sky and to touch the clouds, what did this intricate forest below look to something up there? Before he could even fathom the thought another small bug this time one with a pair of brightly colored wings fluttered across his line of sight. The swirling blues and greens were rather attractive to the colt as he quickly pounced after it however it didn’t take Ahote long though to lose sight of it. Sigh, this was what happened when you were too small to do anything shaking his head he started to make his way in another direction only to stop for a few minutes. A really werid looking flower had attracted his attention this time and forgetting where he was he didn’t see or hear the pale like filly that whispered behind the tree. In fact Ahote didn’t even see her until she was about an inch away from his nose whispering loudly something about giving away a position.

“Wah….. ok” he replied shaking his head, maybe she was in trouble? If she was in trouble then he would be in trouble as well, and the last thing he wanted to do was to give his father even more words to say in their little discussion whenever he got back. Giving a nod to the filly he eyed the woods carefully for anything unusual, a wolf, a dog, maybe something bigger but he didn’t see anything. Nevertheless being cautious never hurt anyone right?

“So… who are we keeping an eye out for?” he replied whispering back as softly as he could.

Before responding to his question she allowed her eyes to wander as she attempted to find a concealed spot near their current location. Before long the goblins would pick up her scent trail and wander into the woods in search of her and now this new player she had so uncouthly sucked into the mix. Not but five meters from them stood a thicket of bushes which seemed to provide the most camouflage from the beasts. Prodding the colt with her nose gently she angled him towards the thicket whilst looking over her shoulder briefly to be sure they hadn’t already discovered her whereabouts. It wasn’t until she turned her head back to focus on the new addition to the game that she took the time to actually look at him. He was the first she had met who closely resembled her coloring in any respect of the word. Though he was much darker she took in some resemblance, many she had encountered were very different from her. Mainly the only other Soquili she had approached were Angenis and he definitely looked nothing like them. After taking a few more notes about his appearance she remembered he had asked a question and figured now would be as good a time as any to respond. Keeping her voice low she began to explain their current predicament. “You see,” she began dramatically, “I had to reach you before they did.” Pausing she looked around with shifty eyes. “The goblins would have eaten you up in a heartbeat had you attracted their attention.”

When only a few steps away from the thicket she motioned for him to enter and quickly ducked inside. She found herself completely closed in on all sides by thick green bushes, never had she found a hideout so perfect as the one she had just encountered. Even if the goblins came into the woods searching for both of them she could easily defend this fortress. Now with what she hoped to be another player she may actually have a chance of winning this time. Defending a fortress by yourself is not only boring but it is also incredibly difficult. Turning about she focused on the spot by which she entered, wondering if the colt would actually come in after hearing her explanation. Her brother always told her not to bug others with her silly little games because often times the world was seen differently through each set of eyes. She rarely listened to Arthur and this was another occasion of her defiance, she was sure she had found a playmate, just sure of it.

Ahote watched as the small fily nudged himwith her nose and nodded her head towards a small heavy thicket of branches and leaves. Perfect! Nothing could have been better to hide from whatever was hunting them or looking for them assuming that if it wasn’t something dangerous that the filly had siblings somewhere… maybe they were playing a game of hide and go seek? Shaking his head he followed her catching the small flicker of her red like tail and the small knotted pattern that decorated her back, now that was werid. It was in an odd shape something he had never seen before, true he had seen family members with markings but all of them looked random and natural where as her seemed more like it was suppose to be something. Maybe he could ask her what it was after they finally edge their way out of whatever danger that they, or well he, had stumble upon. Perking his ears up she started to whisper to him his pale brown eyes watching the dark irsis of filly infront of him, werid again, he watched as she shifted and spoke of goblins.

Wait goblins? What in the world were goblines? Why did they want to eat soquilis? Did they have longs, teeths or fangs, or were they something poisionous like brightly colored frogs that killed their prey and then ate them. Maybe they were huge like bears, but if they were wouldn’t he have seen them? Maybe they were really small with really big teeth sort of like rats but worse because they ate flesh. Whatever it was it apparently ate large creatures, because she spoke of eat eating them, not just her but both and he as in no mood to die so soon. He ducked his head into the thicket his nose greeting hers as she waited for him to follow.

“So…” he said with a whisper looking around the thicket, “what do goblins like?”

So far so good, the foul sickeningly green creatures had yet to discover their whereabouts. The scent of their saliva reached Searlait’s nostrils and she wrinkled them in disgust before flinching ever so slightly as the nose of the colt bumped into hers. Stepping back so he would have room to inch his way into the thicket she looked over her shoulder and then turned back to him, prepared to explain their strategy, when he asked an amazing question. “What are gob-? Have you never encountered them before?” Oh great, not only were they in a fairly bad situation but she had been saddled with a rookie who didn’t even know what it was they were running from. Shaking her head she pressed closer to him to keep their noise discipline at a good level. “Goblins are those nasty green frog looking things patrolling that valley just past these trees,” she explained, jerking her head towards the field in indication of their location, “they have very sharp teeth and spit that will melt your skin if it touches you!” Okay, so she had a flare for the overdramatic, but that is what made these games all the more entertaining for her. “If they so much as catch wind of us or hear our talking they will ambush us and eat us whole.”

A small shiver shook her body as she envisioned them being overrun and devoured by the small creatures. “They have very sharp teeth and claws and will not even think before ripping into you.” She added as an afterthought. “Even so, you and I will be able to beat them because you are a powerful warrior and I am a tactical genius.” This statement was accompanied by a powerful bob of her head as though she were very confident in their imaginary abilities. She took this chance to look over her new playmate, his eyes were quite unusual. A golden color unlike any she had ever seen, from what she heard her father’s eyes were also a rarity but she didn’t know too much on that subject. She was quite happy to have a new friend and expressed this momentarily by nuzzling him quickly. “My name is Searlait! What is your name?” Still, she hadn’t really considered if he really wanted to join in the game or not. She was just relieved to have someone other than Calibor and Arthur to play with.

The wheels in the little colt’s head started to turn and click in to realization that what the filly in front of him who nudged him into the shrub was talking about. Goblins, weren’t real, they existed in her imagination as a part of a game, something that actually had the ability to melt skin with their spit was never heard of in actuality. However, he had heard of such things from his mother, more of when he started to pout because his brothers were off playing and refused to let him join his mother would make games to play. She always played the role of the wicked witch who cast a spell on Viski or his sister making her into some weird creature and he would always save her. He didn’t mind the games at all, in fact they were rather fun to play, he always got to play the role of the dashing warrior (never a knight warrior always suited him). Ahote was reminded that the filly was here when her body pressed against his began to shiver. Was she cold or maybe she was just a little scared of he thought of these goblin creatures after them? In speaking small frog like creatures with sharp teeth was never a pleasant thing to come across imaginary or not.

When the filly mentioned that they would because he was a powerful warrior and she as a tactical genius a smile spread on the colt’s lips. Other than his mother and family (not including his brothers) no one had ever mentioned him being a powerful warrior, it was sort of nice hearing it from someone else even if t was for an imaginary game, it made him feel as if he was more useful than normal. Ahote watched as the filly looked over him, and he noticed that she had a rather interesting tones of red flowing through her mane matched with an interesting silver necklace no one is family wore something like that, and much to his surprise she nuzzled him quickly letting him know that she was rather happy with him there playing along. This was an odd feeling for Ahote as his cheeks started to flush red, he couldn’t figure out why but nevertheless he felt a little happy to be of use. Giving a quick grin and a little puff of his chest he repeated her name in his mind before giving his own, “my name is Ahotemachk Chittoachak, but you can call me Ahote for short.” His light brown eyes peered through the small shrub hoping that his movements wouldn’t give their hiding spot away, “what does the tactical genius Searlait suggest us to do to get us safely away from here?”

Ahote, he had said was the shorter version of his name, an unusual sounding thing that tripped up her tongue upon attempting to repeat the full version as opposed to the nickname. Never before had she encountered something as exotic as his full name. She was used to unusual names like the ones of her sisters and brothers. Fearthainn had and curious name as well as Edana, Arthur and Calibor weren’t that bad but they still weren’t something you heard each day. The introduction brought a smile to her maw, her first real friend aside from Wystan the inquisitive little foal she often found herself yammering with. “My name means crimson, what does yours mean?” She found herself asking without much thought. Fearthainn’s curiosity had rubbed off on her, whether she wished to believe it or not. With a name like that there had to be something behind it.

After a moment she found herself gazing through the holes in the brush just as Ahote had done. The goblins were most certainly on the prowl and they looked hungrier and grouchier than ever before. When her tactical strength was called into play the wheels in Searlait’s head sprung to life. A full frontal attack would never do, her father would be ashamed if she attempted anything as petulant as that. Looking at the ground beneath her hooves Searlait began visualizing different movements they could perform. Lifting her eyes she took in the way of the thicket they were hidden in. Just to their left was a thin layer of trees that would conceal them when using a flanking movement. Now she assessed the number of goblins and what it would take to defeat them. It seemed at the moment that six were patrolling the area. It would be difficult but if each of them took their fair share and watched the other’s back there may be a chance.

“I’ve got it.” She whispered delicately in his ear, taking note of his blush earlier and taking advantage of it. “We flank them on the left, keeping very quiet and moving slowly. They will be so focused on the scent leading them straight forward they will never suspect a thing!” Looking out at the goblins to be sure they hadn’t heard her she continued. “Each of us will take three and beat their brains out with our hooves. Make sure they don’t get a chance to spit at you! We only have a little salve left to treat the burns.” Taking a breath she peered at the goblins for the last time. “Any additions, subtractions or otherwise?”
