It was a gorgeous late winter day; the temperature was cool but pleasant, the snow was melting, and through the barren branches of the trees the occasional birdsong could be heard. From a distance, the landscape could almost be a picture postcard.

Unfortunately, things weren't always the same up close as they were from a distance. Being close friends with a kalona who had never lived up to her race's nasty reputation, Seyx was extremely familiar with the concept of appearance being deceiving; however, there were times when he'd rather had been right in his initial misconception.

Today, he and Lessia had decided to go their separate ways and wander, as it was nearing the time that Lessia needed to indulge in her need to eat meat. Though Seyx never actually vocalized his profound disgust at that concept, the two were such close friends that Lessia didn't need words to understand how much her carnivorous appetites affected her friend. Consequently, the two always parted company on days that Lessia needed to eat meat, and both were happier for it.

Seyx had determined to head over to the foothill region for the day, liking the gentle rolling of the hills as he did. As he had flown in, he felt that his decision had been the right one as he surveyed the mostly snow-free ground, heard the birdsong, and felt the light morning breeze. But upon landing, Seyx's hooves had squelched into what was unmistakably mud.

Yes, appearances were definitely deceiving...

Aod trudged through the mud. What winter had decided to blanket the land with, was now melting and combining with a now warmed surface. The mud was rich from blankets of snow that had melted and stretched as far as the eye could see.

"Great... more mud..." Aod hated the feeling of the caked mud on his hooves. The mud was not only caked upon the bottom of his hooves but also began to plaster to the ends of his tail.

Aod approached the base of an old tree and scraped his hooves against the rough bark. As the mud flakes fell Aod smiled and scratched harder. "My efforts are futile... I'm just gonna get more mud on them anyway." He exhaled quickly and ducked his head.

It was at times like these that Seyx could be thankful for being part flutter and consequently smaller than the average Soquili. Less body mass meant less weight to sink, thereby resulting in less mud up the legs and less overall hassle.

That was the theory, anyway. After a few minutes of walking, Seyx could feel the mud starting to work its way up his limbs, exacerbated by the momentum created by walking. Even worse, flecks of mud were getting into his tail, up his limbs, and even on his wing feathers. Apparently the moral was that even smaller-than-normal Soquili weighed too much to walk comfortably in mud without sinking...which led him to the second thing that he could be thankful for being part flutter about.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Seyx gave his wings a very fond smile. They were feathered, a gift from his wind father, but in spirit could be owed to both winged sides of his family. And at the moment, he was very glad to see them; the last thing he wanted to do was squelch along in the mud all day by himself!

Spreading his wings, Seyx first shook them out in a haphazard attempt to flick off some of the mud. Not very effective, but it was a nice thought. Then all that he needed to do was get a good running start...

"Well crap!" His tone was laced with more than a little exasperation as Seyx looked around him at what seemed to be an ocean of mud, disrupted only by trees and the occasional holdout pile of snow. Looks like there would be no flight for a while, bummer!

However, a chance flick of his ear caused the stallion to pause. Had he actually heard another voice, or was he just imaging things? Slowing to a stop, he flicked an ear again, craning his neck around for a sight of the hypothetical speaker. Failing to see anyone, he decided to just bite the bullet. "Hello?"
