And I suck. D:

We're playing The Puffy Taco. I play 3rd Trumpet and know I'm playing the notes right, but they sound wrong when I play with the rest of the band, so I dunno...

Has anyone played this song before?

3rd trumpet parts are typically meant to harmonize with the other trumpets, so if you think you're playing the right notes it is most likely right.
And if you are playing wrong notes your director will probably tell you.

Thank you. I thought it was something like that because I always play third and the parts always sound different.

Maybe, but my BD made sure all of the sections were in tune recently.
That could be it, though...

tuning will be different every time you play, plus it will even change WHILE you're playing. it is very difficult to keep a whole band in tune, and aside from that, tuning one note won't necessarily fix the others. you could be perfectly in tune on a concert Bb but just a half step up on a B you could be 20+ cents sharp or flat.

Wow, really? I guess they just don't care in middle school as much as they would in high school.

Latin charts are famous for the way parts are arranged. both with harmonization and syncopation of rhythms. So if you think you are getting the notes right it could also be that you are a bit off on your rhythms. The best bet that I can think of would be to listen to some recordings and follow along with your music to see how it matches up. There are some good vids on youtube just type in puffy taco and listen to some other jazz ensembles that have played it.

It's not that you're playing the wrong notes or the wrong song but maybe you have a different part as everyone else... I always thought that I was playing it wrong but then I looked over at the next sax up from me and I saw that the notes were different and they will always be different from your "section leader."
But if you are playing the same part you may be sharp or flat. Try pulling out or in to see if it sounds right again. Otherwise I can't help you.

i play the clarinet in our jazz band, the clarinets and trumpets are the harmony of the band, they are supposed to blen with the rest of it. if you think that you are playing the wrong notes, just ask your director, or ask a fellow trumet
