So my band teacher dropped to second parts, Bout five months ago... And we had a playing test yesterday and she told the whole class I was good enough for first parts and that my playing ablility is above second parts BUT kept me where I was! How is that fair?!?
EDIT: I was moved up a few days ago, because we had a playing test and the girl in the spot im in now, really really wasnt playing good

Maybe your teacher kept you as a second because if she organized the section from good to bad, the seconds would sound terrible. She needs to balance it out by putting some good people in the other parts. I understand! Last year, my teacher told me I was good enough for first flute, but said he needed me to play second to help pick up the slack. Our trumpets are organized by good to bad, and I'm definitely glad us flutes aren't, because the trumpets sound terrible!

It's okay, you should be trusting your band teacher. I had that all last year...the teacher told me that I should be playing somewhere at the front of the second row, but since it was my first year in a 3-grade spanning band, fair was fair and the older kids recieved the first and the front parts. I was okay with it. Second is an importnat part, THAT'S WHY COMPESERS BOTHER TO WRITE IT. I occasionally now even play second even though I'm in second chair right now, because sometimes the sound is just lacking and the other flues are playing first in their parts. It really doesn't matter to me; we're all supposed to be working towards a good band, these individual section squables shouldn't interfere with our director's wishes.

I beat a girl who really just has the upper hand beecause shes been playing longer, so she stopped practicing... and I took her spot (:
