Well, as you guys are aware, I am Jew-ish.

I don't eat anywhere near what I should in calories, I am aware of my behaviour.

I can't stop my behaviour, part of me certainly doesn't want to, but I am religious.

What do you think G-d thinks about those who have depression, eating disorders, and other issues?

Someone said to me that people with eating disorders are being vain, and trying to fill their emptiness with something other than G-d. I disagree. G-d has nothing to do with this.

Really, I don't see any connection between disorders and religion at all. You might see a correlation, but there's also a correlation between ice cream sales and murder. That doesn't mean anything.

Anorexia can be caused by being sick and isn't always a permenant thing... Sense i had chickenpox as an adult I noticed things like that.. I had anorexia while I had it and got to the point where I couldn't walk because I had no appetite.

Another thing is some people don't try to have eating disorders, they just forget to eat or only eat alot half of the time (benge eating) also there are those who are hungry to the point of feeling like they are starving all of the time.

I will admit that there are alot of people who force themselves to have eating disorders do do this for vanity, but making generalizations with anything normally means you will be wrong at some point and this is one of those times.

Asto what any of them have to do with religion I don't know, I have never heard them mentioned.... I'm also not sure what my opinions are on the subject...

I just finished learning about eating disorders in my psychology class. It's a very serious issue.

Personally, I would not call your eating disorder your god, or even an idol just from what I know about you. However, I do think that perhaps it can be something that will get in the way of or distract you of your relationship with God. It is something that should be carefully monitored, I think, and hopefully helped. I hope you're praying about this disorder, and I will definitely pray for you.

God is comfort for all, and that certainly does not disclude those with depression or eating disorders.

I kinda agree with comfortably_dumb...but I shouldn't have an opinion on this as I am anorexic...
But I can see how getting caught up with the act of BEING depressed or anorexic or suicidal can hinder your relationship with God. It certainly messed up mine...
I got so obsessed with weight and calories that I didn't do anything religion-related for months...
I'm still anorexic, but I've balanced my time better.
So it's not 'bad', it's just distracting. mrgreen

I just realized that I didn't answer the question...
I think that God wants to let those that have ED's, depression, and other issues solve them themselves and learn a lesson. I don't think He's going to sweep in and save you from yourself, but He's not going to just leave you in the dust either. He'll guide you in the right direction, but He can't solve everything for you. That's not fair.

I hope that made semi-sense...

in my experience, when it comes to problems such as that, it's apparently a sign of demonic possession, or making friends with the devil's minions and you truly don't want the help from god to fix whatever problem you have. that's utter bullcrap as far as i'm concerned. we all have our problems, and no amount of praying, fasting (which probably isn't recommended in your case anyway) or anything else is going to make it all better. i believe that god gave us these trials to make us stronger, because everybody has them, and we all must deal with them one way or another. i guess that's the reason i don't really go to church anymore.

In Christianity the typical belief is that your body does not belong to you but to God and you are supposed to take care of it.

1 Cor. 6:19-20 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

ED's, depression...they're forms of mental illness that have a very profound effect on the individuals life but I'm sure I don't need to point that out. I believe in the mercy of God, I believe that he has compassion for those who suffer from any illness, I believe he is omniscient and knows what the individual is struggling with.

That being said and remaining within the confines of my religious beliefs I think it important for the person to try to get better, for themselves, for God, and for all others who care about that individual because it will have an effect on them as well.

I'm neither Christian nor Jewish but I have my own experience with depression and other issues. These things, in most cases are not about vanity. No one wants to give themselves that kind of pain and illness. Not unless they are trying to punish themselves in some way and that's a whole other kind of unhealthy. Your God can give you strenght to help you through these things but more mundane help is also a good idea.

i believe our creator cares for us and wishes us to be well and whole.

i also believe our creator is not as powerful as we wish she were, and so we go around disappointed at our condition.

and this is my true honest opinion.

My hubby believes that anorexia, bulimia, schizophrenia, bipolar, OCD, and all related disorders are the work of the devil. But my hubby is Schizophrenic and Bipolar himself, so it's kind of not surprising to hear him say that...He has some rather unorthodox ideas about things...

I myself, am kind of skeptical of that, even though I do believe in God. I can't PROVE that these disorders are of the Devil, and I can't prove that they aren't either. I DO know that it says nothing of the sort in the Bible, and that scientists have PROVEN (for most disorders) that the cause is a chemical imbalance in some part or other of the brain, so I choose to go by that explanation, until I am proven otherwise.

(*Note: I do not believe in God myself, but I am speaking from my understanding of Jewish beliefs*.)

If it's not in your holy book, you don't need to feel any inclination to follow it. Although it sounds as though you should get a doctor's help if your issue gets any worse, I'm fairly certain that it does not specifically say that in any Jewish scriptures (although I would not know for sure).

Point being: If you believe that God loves you, than it goes without saying that he WANTS you to be healthy, but showing physical weakness is exactly what God is supposed to support and help you AGAINST.
