I was expecting something like the computers we have now, but it's cool they could make something like that out of clockwork none the less. Lol an ancient Mac.

Kewl. I've seen the original artifact before but that is the first time I've seen the working replica. Thanks for the link.

Esper Ranger Kewl. I've seen the original artifact before but that is the first time I've seen the working replica. Thanks for the link. No problem. It's just cool to see it was figured out.

Given how the first face is essentially an orrery, I find it interesting how later scientists favoured a rather different (and less compact) design: Because it looks more interesting/realistic? Less need to make it compact (and this easy to transport)? Showing off?

The only reason the Antikythera device was compact was because it needed to be portable for use in sea navigation.

I'm not sure it would have been particularly suited for navigation - although being able to find planets amidst the stars and comparing your position would tell you which way you'd be going, the stars alone are quite well suited to the task. Also, adding the eclipse calendar seems a bit unnecessary. Not to mention it'd probably corrode pretty quickly, even if one were careful.
I quite fancy the idea it was just one person's attempt at showing of, etc.
