He was gone.

Serenade woke up with a start, not realizing that her cheeks were wet with tears from crying, as they had been when she was in her dream. For a moment, she stared blankly around the room, as if hoping that he would appear at the end of her bed right there, then flopped back down, pulling up her covers to cover her face. If she slept, she would see him again, right? Right? She would go back to Elysion, to see Helios, to see...

Eon.

It was silly. She told herself. Very silly of her to be thinking this way. He had told her that he would go, to give her some rest because it was a school night, and if she ever wanted to see him again, she would have to find Helios. But... how?

She couldn't think too clearly on that matter for now; all she felt now was the ache in her heart, the hole right there when Ally had left her. The emptiness, dripping with pain and her shoulders shuddered before she pulled her legs to her chest, sobbing.

"Zue." She murmured softly. "Zue, please, Zue." Zue was probably one of the only one in this world that could comfort her, even if he wasn't eloquent. Because he was her guardian, her guardian cat, who had watched over her, and who would always watch over her. "Zue, help me."

Sue, meanwhile, had been safely asleep in his own bed, enjoying a completely unrelated dream that was completely lacking of old, familiar faces and the utter destruction of emotional barriers. Or at least, it had been. Because somewhere in the midst of a Hollywood-inspired dream of flying over the forest of an alien world, a voice began to cut in through the flimsy barrier of Sue's subconsciousness: Zue, help me....

The next few seconds blasted by like a freak storm, throwing around mental clutter as Sue simultaneously woke straight up from his dead sleep and instinctively reached for some mental controls he hadn't consciously known were there. It was like pushing into a dusty room in an old house, and watching all the sheets being ripped off of the previously indistinguishable shapes disguising the room's purpose; and, before he knew what was happening (or whether it was even his doing, or merely his reaction!), Sue found himself someplace very, very different from the dingy motel room he'd been calling home.

It would have been extremely awkward if, at this point, he should have discovered himself inside the Princess's room, wearing nothing but his boxers and maybe a bit of drool on his cheek. Luckily for him, this wasn't quite the case - or at least, half of it wasn't. Because it didn't take him more than a few seconds, eyes absorbing the sight of feminine decor through the darkness and mind picking out the familiar and all-important blip on his radar, to know that he was indeed in Serenade's room - but he, at least, had somehow found the dignity to dress himself in a more appropriate, albeit smaller, form in that instant of automatic reaction.

He heard his name being whimpered between sniffles, and his ears went flat. Without a word, the Guardian Cat launched himself up onto the bed where Serenade was curled up underneath the blanket, soaking the cloth through with her muffled tears.

Zue couldn't imagine what had happened to put her in such a state - but fortunately, it didn't matter. He trotted up to the head of the bed quickly, right up near Serenade's pillow, and lowered his head down to where she'd buried herself beneath the covers. He batted a paw at the blanket's hem, as though trying to dig her out to where he could reach her - "Princess...?"

The moment she heard Zue's voice, the covers opened tentatively to peek out, as if afraid that she had been hallucinating--dreaming again, even. Once pink eyes caught sight of the purple Maine Coon, Serenade sat up to scoop him into her arms, still sobbing, tears trickling down her face as some landed on his fur. "Zue." She managed out as she hugged him closer, trying to get a hold on herself. He probably wanted to know what had happened, and for a while, she struggled to get the words out while the tears still came.

"Eon... Helios..." Were the names she uttered as she wept. "I saw them. In my dream." The green-haired girl was too preoccupied with how distraught she was and the presence of the Guardian Cat, that she had almost forgotten the Zodiac sleeping in the bed besides hers. And that said Zodiac was a pretty light sleeper.

"Light sleeper" was kind of light-handed in how poorly Elke slept. Elke slept really freaking lightly; light enough that she had opened her eyes when Serenade had started to cry, but since she never seemed to be able to fix anything, she had stayed quiet. She bit her lip, pressed her hands over her mouth, and listened. There wasn't anything else she could do, was there?

The Princess seemed to have summoned Zue; of course, she could do that! Still trying to feign sleep, she rolled over, opened her eyes and looked at the sad tableau.

She had been dreaming about Helios and Eon. Helios... the name was familiar, it rung bells with no answer, but Eon. She knew Eon. She always had known the Prince Cavalier of the Epoch... "Poor Princess." It was barely more than a breath, but Elke still startled herself. Thinking her deception was over, she sat up in the bed. "Princess? Are you okay?" She swung her legs over the side, prepared to go to Serenade's side if she was needed; she nodded to Zue, a Soldier Virgo nod, calm and efficient.

Zue, for once, wasn't left in the dark. Maybe there was something about the Princess's state of distress that made his silent guest in his body more receptive to sharing information, but both names that the Princess mentioned immediately called up thoughts and connections in his mind - Eon, Chronos's missing Prince, and Helios, the mystical Priest of Elysion. Certainly, whatever Serenade had seen had been more than a dream, if Helios were involved....

But it didn't seem like Serenade was trying to figure out whether what she saw was real or not. She must already know it - or else it wouldn't have broken her heart like it did.

Here, too, that extra consciousness taking residence in his mind was willing to step in. Propping his front paws up on the Princess's shoulder, Zue found the leverage he needed to rub his face on Serenade's cheek, drying the tears before they could fall.

Words, as usual, were meant only to fail him. So he didn't bother with them; let Elke handle that portion of the inquiry. Zue's duty was best performed just like he was, being unassuming and demanding nothing. This was his Princess, and she needed him - any important details were sure to surface later.

"I... I guess I will be." The green-haired girl murmured, sobs gradually residing as Zue nuzzled her cheek, giving her Guardian Cat a small tentative smile, trying to assure him that she was alright. She probably just needed to cry things out, but even so, her chest still felt hollow and empty within. It was silly to even remember that back in Barren Pines, she had not known what love was, but now, she herself was suffering the pain it could bring.

"Helios." She said finally, after taking a few deep breaths. "Eon... he asked Helios for a favor. Asked him...her..." There was a bit of gender confusion there, for briefly, she recalled the Priest of Elysion, with his short silver hair, but he looked different from when she met him again in her dream. Then again, Astraea had looked different from Luna before, hadn't she? And there was Kunzite..."Asked Helios to let him come to visit me."

"He told me to go to Helios if I wanted to see him again." She murmured. Eon had told her many more things really, to be strong, to go out there and fight, but this was the most important part she felt she needed to know the answer to. "But I don't know where Helios is. Who Helios is."

She shifted out of her bed, joined Serenade and Zue on that side of the room; Serenade shifted over a bit to make room. Careful to avoid the cat's tail, she sat down on the bed and hugged the Princess. "It's okay if you're not going to be okay soon," said Elke, trying to be helpful, "We'll always be here, it's okay to cry, right Zue?"

When Serenade started to explain, Elke fell silent, combed her Princess's hair back with her fingers. Her Princess had held her when she was crying over Avery in Barren Pines; Serenade didn't know how hard it hit her sometimes, how those friends she'd known were dead and gone. For it to be the Prince, though, for it to be Ally...

Eon had visited her in her dreams. Elke bit her lip, paused in her attempts at comfort, looked down at her knees. Was it a good thing, that the Prince had come to Serenade? Would a clean break have been better, instead of... being able to have him in dreams, but having to wake up and remember this?

It was something... "We'll find Helios, Princess," said Elke. "I will look for him all the time. So will Zue! Right?" Gently--this kind of affection came naturally to Elke--she pressed a kiss to Serenade's temple. "If you want to see the Prince again, I will make sure it happens!"

If Elke had been asking him, is it all right for me to cry, then Zue would have probably given her a disgusted look and reminded her that the Negaverse didn't hand out hankies and wait for people to finish drying their eyes on the battlefield. But when she asked if it was all right for the Princess to cry, well....

"Of course." It wasn't like Zue had ever made overtures of believing in a fair and just universe - not in this incarnation, anyway.

Awkward as he felt around all this touchy-feely stuff, unsure if he had any tangible way of helping the Princess but anxious to find one, Zue felt almost grateful when neither Serenade nor Elke seemed to have any clue. Finally, something he could really contribute! (Providing free snuggles, to his mind, was not actually helping - it didn't solve the problem, after all, only treated the symptom.)

"Helios is the Priest of Elysion," he commented, for the benefit of those without any memories jangling in their heads. It was one of the few, rare times in memory, that Zue thought he might have information to share about this type of stuff - it was bizarre, actually, and gratifying. Propping himself against the Princess's shoulders so that he could look her directly in the face, he suggested - "If we could find our way there, we might find him. Or else if he knows you are looking for him, he might come to us."

The underlying implication: Yes, Princess, they would find him. For whatever good it would do her grieving heart.

"I'm sorry for crying." Serenade said, red eyed but not tearing up anymore. Crying when there were people around her that cared for her was bad; it made them feel hopeless and worried. She knew, because she had felt that way when Elke was crying for Avery. She hadn't known what to say, it seemed like anything she said wouldn't be much comfort and she had worried if spoken, it would seem insensitive. She gave Elke a gratified smile, and wondered if she asked the other Zodiacs to keep an eye out for Helios, she would. Or would Aries scold her for desperately clinging on to a small ray of hope and tell her to focus on something else instead?

"I was in Elysion." She replied, starting at the information Zue offered. "In my dream, I was there. Helios looked... different. She's a... girl with golden-red hair." Perhaps if she bumped into Helios again, she would know her with a glance. Would Helios be at the senshi meeting Astraea was preparing? She certainly hoped so.

She had worried that Zue would not be comforting at all. In her memories, he was a killjoy (a killjoy she liked, but still a killjoy) who was always bluntly realistic. That was valued, because it pushed her further and harder and--she had still failed in the end, but he had tried, and she'd respected him for that. Still did, in a way. "Don't be sorry, Princess," said Elke; "You never have to be sorry."

A girl Helios? That was weird, but then, it was no weirder than a girl Captain. The Priest of Elysion, she vaguely remembered, hadn't been that masculine anyway.

"I'll ask all the senshi I meet," she said firmly. "All of them!" Finding Helios would be her Number One Priority. She would even ask the Captain, just in case, and also Captain Kunzite.

Just so all her bases were covered. "We'll find her, Princess," promised Elke.

Oh. So, Helios had been reborn? That... made Zue's knowledge less valuable, it seemed. Certainly, it meant that it would be a bit tricker to find the Priest(ess?); but with Elke being so positive and proactive, he could hardly pull on the reins without upsetting the Princess, could he?

"I'll speak with the other Zodiacs." It sounded feeble to his own ears, but it was the best that Zue could offer. "Someone's bound to learn something. Astraea's bound to turn up sometime, too, and she probably knows everything." Was that a bitter tinge in his voice, having to consider that another Guardian Cat might be more helpful to his Princess than he was? Zue had always been a little possessive of Chronos in the past, maybe it was good to see that his new incarnation hadn't changed anything. "So we can try her."

It was all very reasonable planning, Zue thought - but the problem was, it was all future stuff. How was it supposed to help the Princess now, when she needed it?

And here, again, that second self of his came through with a contribution. It was tiny, though, something he could just barely remember - just a snatch of music, felt through the vibrations of a grand piano under his paws as a young Chronos, smiling up at him, plinked away at a cheerful tune. "Princess. Remember when you were young, and you would get it into your head that I was having a bad day, so you would play a particular song on your piano for me?" Zue questioned, his tone wandering from bemused to uncertain. He couldn't remember much of the song at all, but only the way that Chronos would smile when she played it....

"I... I don't remember it. Maybe you can play it for me again?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 22, 2010 1:33 am

"And not patrol alone." Serenade admonished her lightly as a reminder. She had told Ally about what had happened to Elke, and he had seemed worried too. But really, it was a part of Elke's powers; getting hurt. And it really sucked like that.

"I hope so." She said, fiddling with a corner of her sheets. "Astraea's really hard to find though; probably planning the meeting she was talking about." The last time she had seen Astraea was at the hospital, and Astraea had only mentioned Kunzite, but not Helios. Did that mean Helios was not here yet? Was he... or she still hiding? It was puzzling.

Zue's sudden question made her fix her gaze on him in curiosity and she closed her eyes slightly. She herself didn't really remember everything in the past, though it had been coming back to her slowly as days passed. "I... think I can remember it. Hold on." Eyes snapped open and she slipped out of bed, searching in her wardrobe for something. When she turned, they both noticed the electronic keyboard balanced carefully in her hands. Serenade didn't play it much; she much preferred to play at the grand piano in Crystal Academy because it had much a larger range, but this keyboard was good for simple tunes she just wanted to play to cheer her up. Besides, if she recalled correctly, that song was pretty simple and basic, with no difficult chords.

The keyboard was brought over and set carefully on her bed and she switched it on, taking a while to fiddle with the volume knob and testing if it was just soft enough for them to hear. When she was satisfied, Serenade set her hands on the keys and played, letting her fingers remember it for her. It was indeed simple, but cheery, played at a moderate speed. Serenade Soriano did not manage to place the song as anything she had ever heard before, any score that had been composed by a famous musician or something like that, but Chronos remembered and smiled as she played.

She hung her head, smiled shamefacedly at the Princess; she didn't often go out alone, not off school grounds. She usually met up with one senshi or another, and then she would go out. Not alone!...

Of course she had probably lied a few times and told Serenade she was meeting a Zodiac when she technically wasn't. Well, technical was a poor word for it. "I don't know what the Moon cats are doing," sighed Elke to Zue, seemingly forgetting her anger from a few days before; "I haven't seen a single one and some of the senshi I meet don't even know what they're supposed to be doing." Like Elke was one to talk; she had completely forgotten what she was supposed to be doing, but now she knew and. Mentoring newer senshi worked out for her, who knew.

Watching the Princess search through her closet--Elke didn't keep things other than clothes in her wardrobe--she gave Zue a perfunctory pat. "Do not shed on the Princess's bed," she said, possibly teasing. She returned to her bed, settled under her covers and smiled, happily.

I wish I could remember where I heard this, she thought; but the Princess was smiling, too, and that was good. A good call, Zue.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 1:57 pm

Did Zue give Elke permission to pat him? No, he was pretty sure he hadn't. He made a grumpy face at the girl (though it was rather indistinguishable from his normal cat face, honestly), harumphing under his breath. She wouldn't try something like that if he were in human form, so why did she think it was all right in cat form?

... Of course. Zue wouldn't go snuggling up to the Princess in human form, either. Or be lounging around in her room at night, angling for the best spot on the bed to perch while she adjusted the settings on her keyboard. So maybe he was being a bit of a hypocrite - not that he'd admit it, of course.

He was glad to find that she remembered that song - better than he had, sure enough, to be able to play it so easily. His ears tilted to catch as much of the music as they could, while Zue seemed to sink into the mattress, relaxing. He really had suggested the song for the Princess's sake, make no mistake, but that didn't mean it didn't have an effect on him either.

"You still play very well, Princess," the cat sighed - did he seem a little less grouchy now than before? Was there maybe a bit of gravel in his throat, the slightest hint of a purr? Surely not! Not with one of the Zodiacs there. What would Zue do, if it got out that he was really just a big softie around his Princess?

The song ended, and Serenade lifted her head to smile, first at Zue, then at Elke, then stifled a yawn with her hand. It was then she properly realized that it was the middle of the night, and both of them were up accompanying her just because she went into a panic...

Serenade did not know if it was right to feel horribly guilty or not, because they would probably assure her that it was really fine, but then again, being a Princess didn't mean she had to take advantage of such privileges. She would have to make up to them later.

The girl reached out a hand to pat the Guardian Cat, but then at the very last moment, decided to lean forward to give him a kiss on top of his head. "Thank you, both of you." And now, even though she was a little reluctant to go back to sleep, to face a dream without Ally, she put on her best smile and ruffled Zue's fur. "I'm sorry for waking both of you up. It's best if we go back to sleep; there's still school tomorrow." Ally had said that it was a school night and therefore he had to leave early, thus she would be sensible and listen to him.
