To say it had been a horribly confusing and heart wrenching series of months for one sky blue nomad would be a grave understatement.

He had had the love of his life, Melody, a beautiful mare he cared for deeply, and a family on the way. And yet somehow, something that was to be beautiful was shattered when, after he had carefully placed each child into their wind-gifted baskets, and adorned them with the trappings he had commissioned from Cuauhcoatl, Melody had announced she needed to go, get away for a bit.

And then she didn't come back.

He had been in denial for ages -- his old herd had lived in separate sections, the males and the females living apart and traveling to rejoin each other. Sure, he had trained in the third micro-herd of runners, keeping contact and trade open between the two herds until he became lost in the great sandstorm and found himself to the south of the mountains and west of the Kawani lands, and finally found himself in the Kawani lands themselves, hoping for news about the rest of his herd.

It wasnt unusual in the desert - They had to keep the balance of the oasis' they survived on carefully, could not stay as one group, and thus the men would travel save for a few protectors or a few wander blood females joining the males, while the women stayed in the grand oasis in the heart of the desert. And thus he deluded himself for months, even as the baskets that contained their children became too little to contain them and they took their first steps.

It took a month for him to realize he couldn't care for them all on his own, and they began their trek to Cuauhcoatl's territory, hoping his old friend, who was known for raising and educating orphans, could help him care for his brood, though still in his mind he was telling himself 'until Melody came back.'

But a seed of doubt began to grow.

The trek was long and slow, trying to not wear out the children and to keep them on track. Months passed and they were on the last leg of their journey when Roundel vanished, having run away to seek her mother.

And he pushed the others onward quickly until they met the angeni, leaving them in his care so he could seek down the runaway, fear and panic driving him through the nights, searching each day until he could stay conscious no longer, Sleeping only for a few hours before continuing on his way, fearing the worse.

When he found the eldest girl of the family, he was worse for wear and almost haggard in appearance, exhausted.

When he saw who was with Roundel, by then he had given up hope in Melody ever coming back, and at first his heart broke, feeling that he was seeing spirits of the dead, Melody and Roundel lost to him. In his sleep deprived state, he wept openly for the first time since Melody left him, feeling like a broken man.

Needless to say, afterwards, as he guided the two living mares back towards Cuauhcoatl's territory, he apologized repeatedly for his behavior , embarrassed by the fact he had mistaken them for dead.

So now he sat on the cliff overlooking the sweeping valley in the silver moonlight, the foals tucked away in sleep in the longhouse behind him, unable to sleep.

Melody had left him and had not planned on returning. She had followed Roundel as she headed back on the path to Cuauhcoatl's territory out of the Kawani lands to the east, worried for her daughters safety. It was confusing, to say the least, and he wasn't sure whether to hope she would stay, or keep his heart from accepting her return. He didn't want to feel that ache again.

Confused and emotionally wounded, he was going to focus on simply making the pain stop, and wait to see what happened. It was about all he could do.

Melody had been lost for months, wandering around the land, and trying to figure out exactly what she was going to do with herself now. She kept repeating to herself over and over that she'd done the right thing. Now way could she have been a decent mother. She didn't deserve to have someone wonderful like Mecho at her side, and no way did she deserve to have such a lovely family. She did everything in her power to convince herself that this was true, until the day Rondel found her.

That had to be one of the hardest days of her lives. She couldn't believe her own filly had sought her out, after Melody had abandoned her. What did Del see in her exactly? Melody had agreed to travel with Rondel, under the condition that one day she return to Mecho and explain that she hadn't abandoned him like her mother had. And so the two traveled, but it only lasted for two days. Rondel ended up separated from Melody and Melody almost lost her mind over it, until Rondel found her way back, she was surprised she'd returned at all. So, when Rondel decided it was time they go in search of Mecho, Melody went as well.

The first day they were reunited was a bit scary. Mecho had been searching for Rondel after he'd left their other two in the care of a herd. Something in her snapped when he began to cry, he looked terrible from his travels, he had literally almost worried himself to death. She felt heartbroken, but couldn't manage to say much to him at first. They traveled back to the herd quietly, Rondel explained a little of what had gone on and Melody stayed silent, watching Mecho with curious eyes.

Now, she approached him cautiously, she wasn't sure how he'd react to her without Rondel around. She'd met Minuet and Cabriole earlier, and was surprised at how easily they accepted her reappearance in their lives. Of course, she'd tried to explain that she didn't know how long she'd be around, but they were just so happy to see her...

"Mecho...?" She only whispered the words, terrified that he might no accept her again. How could she have possibly left him at all? Would he ever be willing to forgive her?

Mecho's first thought was to pretend he couldn't hear her -- it was such a soft call of his name, and yet it roared in his ears crystal clear, making his heart ache.

That thought only last a heart beat before he glanced over his shoulder at her with a soft smile, the expression on his face bittersweet, "its a beautiful night out tonight, isn't it..?" He moved slightly, giving her room to settle in beside him and look through the gap in the trees at the valley below without having to press in close.

"...How've you been, Melody..?"

Melody was surprised and relieved when Mecho didn't ignore her, but the way he talked, and scooted away to make room for her, really hurt. She could tell he was still not okay with the fact that she'd just up and left. Their foals were practically full grown now, and the only one she'd seen grow up at all was Rondel. She could understand why Mecho would be so mad at her, she just had to figure out how to break into the shell he'd made around his heart. So, she settled down next to him, she respected the fact that he didn't want to be too close, so she was careful to stay far enough away that it wouldn't be an issue.

"It is a lovely night." She commented, staring up at the stars. She thought back to her first night with Rondel, how beautiful the sky had been then. She sighed and then looked over at Mecho, he looked better now, as opposed to how rough he'd looked when they were reunited. And she realized just how much she had missed him. How much she'd missed being with him and their foals. She'd given all of them up, because she'd thought she deserved a more...free life style. And, she really didn't think she could handle being a mother.

"I've been....thinking." She tentatively said, and looked back out across the valley. "....About us..." She said, now she looked up at him again, and waited to see what he might have to say. She tried to make it look like she was serious now, like she really did love him and their family.

There was a sharp pang of bittersweet hope in his chest, warm and sticky but still painful to feel. Laughing slightly, he smiled slightly, leaning over and nudging her shoulder slightly, in a friendly, platonic manner, stammering slightly, "I'm.... I'm sorry if I was overbearing while... While you were pregnant..."

Melody was a little shocked to hear him laugh, she didn't see what he could be laughing about, unless it was one of those nervous laughs. She stared at him in total astonishment as he asked if he'd been overbearing. Was he blaming himself for her leaving? After a minute or two to get her thoughts together, she shook her head incredulously. This had all been her fault, not his! And she wouldn't let him take the blame.

"No Mecho....of course you weren't. I was the problem...I didn't think I'd...get along with them. I didn't know what I was going to do with them....then one day, Rondel just pranced on into my life. And I was a wreck when she ran away from me. I thought I'd proven just how terrible of a mother I'd be....but...she came. Mecho...she came back..." She was openly crying now, she didn't care. She wanted Mecho to realize what she realized, that she could be a mother. That she could be a loving mate, and that she'd never, ever abandon him again.

The sky blue nomad's heart melted and he shifted his weight to nuzzle gently against her face, his nose catching a few of the dribbling tears before he nibbled lightly at her short hair, "Shh, shh... Melody, Melody.."

He rested his head on her shoulder, the side of his long muzzle pressed lightly against the side of her neck, "I knew you would make a great mother..And would still be able to live the freedom you've been used to." Mecho sighed heartily, smiling softly, "...I missed you."

Melody nuzzled Mecho fonly, like she had before the whole mess with her leaving, she could still remember that day, when she'd just...left. She hadn't given Mecho any explanation, for all he knew she could have run off to be with someone else, though she was sure he'd figured out that she'd just miss being able to go wherever she wished. She couldn't be confined to on place then, but now she felt like she could be as grounded as she needed to be, and the kids had basically grown up now, they'd be leaving just as soon as she came back.

She knew they'd have to do this again, and soon, so she could get it right this time! "You know....we'll have to do this again, but, this time, I'd like to stay around." She said, drying her face in his mane. She smiled and scooted close to him. She had missed him more then he'd ever know.

Mecho chuckled softly, resting his head against her as he leaned affectionately, "All right. But try to remember... While you are not alone... While we are reunited.. You're still free, Melody. And I love you."

Closing his eyes as they laid together in the clover, Mecho sighed contently, and.. For the first time since they had parted, finally slept soundly.
