On the outskirts they might be, but Naiad felt a strong connection to her pack regardless. Sure, most of Akiiki literally was related, however distant, but even had that not been she was certain that the pack members would have been just as close to one another. Her encounter with Urban, though having wounded her pride, had also reminded her of this fact: that not all wolves were as lucky as she was to know such friendly wolves who would be so willing to work with one another. Loving bonds indeed!

Having recovered since from the skirmishes at the border, all thoughts of the smug little boy put away from her mind, Naiad crept from her parents' den with the morning sun, shivering as she was greeted with an almost wall of cold air. "Winter's still holding strong . . . Ugh." Still, she'd feel just as great sunbathing later, the heat of the sun combatting such frigid temperatures, and thus the pup shrugged this off as she headed deeper into Akiiki Chibale territory. She only knew of a few members beyond her immediate family and decided it was time to get to know her "extended family" better. Just as long as no-one made her go fishing!

The slight female laid in the near middle of territory, though she had joined some time ago she still knew so few of the wolves who lived around her. She was fairly shy and often kept herself to herself, helping with patrols and hunting. She felt comfortable in her pack, but had yet to form any true bonds with any of the wolves around her. Though she longed for a companion in which she could turn to and confide in, before joining she had met a few male to whom she had once thought could become her mate, none of them worked out.

The constant lose of a companion had worn on Larka. She had seen the newest pups in the pack, she smiled every time one crossed her path, the sight of them gave her a pang of longing for a litter of her own. but with no mate such a thing would never happen and as time passed she had the worry of becoming barren.

Just as if her mind had conjured up the very thing she was thinking about she spotted the little yellow femme who had been named Naiad. She was a pretty little thing with what Larka had seen to be an interesting personality. Her tail wagged slightly from where she lay, her head resting on her gloved paws, black toes spreading and diging slightly into the earth with a minor stretch.

A young male had entered the brush area west of the pack clearing and dens. He had gone off to connect to his inner nature and was looking to see if he could find a lovely hummingbird. So far Fizzle wasn't having much luck. Today he hadn't even seen a robin. The day seemed so empty without the birds. The adolescent felt so lonely without their twittering. The occasional caw could be heard by ravens and some crows but they weren't so beautiful compared to robins, chickadees and the other lovely small twittering birds.

"Ohhhh la la la la la.." he howled quietly in a sing songy voice. That was when he heard some noises in the far bushes. "Hello?" he said, putting a grin on his face. Fizzle never expected dangers in his pack lands. The male felt safe and comfortable here. Nothing seemed to make him too worried. The only thing he wished to know a bit was about his missing father. Fizzle always wanted to know who he was. Some how he would know. Someday. Just not for a long long time, which made Fizzle a little sad. But he put on a happy face for his mother and for the others. He couldn't let them see how it was affecting his life. No Fizzle would have to continue to be the wolf he was.

"Hmm . . . Maybe I should check the northern river again, see if anymore susi . . . suspa . . . any shady wolves are around," she thought aloud with a slight frown of concentration as she walked without really watching where she was going. It was only the sense of being watched that brought her out of her minor reverie, and she turned her head to view a peach-colored femme who was viewing her with a little wag of her tail. Naturally, Naiad wagged hers back. "Heya! Wait, you weren't about to go back to sleep were you? It's morning! I'ma go on patrol again; lotsa strange wolves about lately." You know, just in case the adult was interested; Naiad had no qualms about revealing her schedule or intentions, frankly.

Her ears perked at the sound of muted singing and glanced at a gray male not too far off, appearing just from the brush. Her parents had told her that one of the wolves, Venera, had had children without an actual mate, but she wasn't supposed to talk about it to anyone; it was sensitive. The nerve, though, to just go make kids and not be around to look after them! Akiiki had indeed wrought strong family values within the little one. "You're welcome to come too, if ya want," she offered the male. "Who knows what we'll find."

Larka laughed lightly and sat herself up with a smile. "Oh no, I was merely laying here for the lack of anything better to do. I didn't hear about strangers wandering about our borders." she said perking up, maybe she would have, had she been more social around the pack. She stood up and stretched herself out and shook herself, bringing sleeping nerves back to life. Her tail raised up slightly and looked over and spotted the male. She had seem him about as well, though she didn't know his name she knew he only had one parent, something that was quite rare within their pack.

"Shall I come with you?" she asked tilting her head at the small bright femme. "I'm Larka by the way." she said her pale eyes looking back over to the young male. He was a handsome thing, and would become more so as he got older. There were many good looking males about the pack, Larka had just never had the courage to approach any of them. She may have been a caring and good natured wolf, but a socialite she wasn't.

Fizzle turned around a surprised look on his face. He grinned saying, "Hiya I'm Fizzle if you don't know! I'd love to go on patrol with you guys. Except I don't think I've been doing much of that. Nobody to teach me y'know."

Everyone knew his strange family line. Nobody knew his father and it seemed to be a good gossip topic. Yet, not one wolf would talk to Fizzle or his other siblings about this. Some days Fizzle wouldn't mind but others, well he wanted someone to tell him about it. Someone who knew his mother, Venera. Which on another note, had not been with Fizzle for awhile. He should of been with her that morning but quickly got wrapped up into a little ditty with the crows. Hopefully on this patrol a robin or two would show up. That would make his day!

Good, she was gathering a little group! Perhaps this would ward off any other smart-aleck intruders, a nice healthy group of three: the small pup who could weave her way through legs, the adolescent male who looked like he'd follow orders easy, and the soft-spoken adult who would provide the "age-ness" - y'know, the quality that meant they were utterly protected regardless. Not that Naiad didn't think this Larka up to it, but she was the type who was always prepared to defend herself. "Great!" she told them. "I'm Naiad. I dunno whether I should hope that something happens or that something doesn't. It's been pretty peaceful - and boring - lately."

She indicated with her muzzle for them to follow after her as the bright little pup trotted onwards on her way north. Momma and Poppa always told her to not go too far east just in case they got too close to that "bad pack", though its name was not something revealed. So Naiad assumed it was this Gomorrah group that the stupid boy Urban had come from, and God knew she didn't want to meet him again. "Nobody to teach ya, huh? Well that's what we all do, right, teach each other stuff? Patrol's not that hard, you just kinda walk around and look all tough."

Larka smiled sweetly at Naiad, going out on patrol was doing something useful with herself and she would have company, something she wasn't too used to. It was exciting, she would have conversation, it would give her a better piece of mind much better than her usual talking to herself, it had grown wearisome.

Chuckling Larka wrinkled her nose at the pup. "Well that's usually a good thing for us. It means no one is trying to come after us and threaten our pack." she said with a grin. It was rare that anything truly exciting happened around the pack, at least that she was ever involved it.

Looking to the young male she tilted her head, his age and he had never been on a patrol? To each their own, maybe he just had not had the luck of someone to take him out, the poor dear. Naiad was right though, it was a fairly simple duty, merely walking the borders, scenting for disturbances and keeping ones eye out for anything that looked at though it could be a threat. "She's right, it's fairly simple, come along, it'll be fun." she said raising her tail a little higher.

The gray male's tail swayed happily at the sound of the patrol. It seemed like a good way to start doing pack duties. He could definitely get the hang of patrols. Yet there could always be more duties in the pack he'd like to do. Fizzle would have to try them all out before he was asked which position he wanted.

"Alright sounds great!" the adolescent replied. His pale pink paws padded away after Larka and Naiad. It was time to learn, yes he was learning from a pup but Fizzle wasn't one to be hurt by such a thing. His pride was never a factor really. Fizzle had a way with accepting the circumstances. No father, no training, little friends. It was all a process. One day Fizzle would have it all, well perhaps not a father. Instead he could be a father. The father he never had. Except there was a problem, which was that Fizzle wasn't quite interested in anyone yet. He hadn't even thought of that until now! The male was young, he had time. Everyone wouldn't expect him to get a mate so quickly after becoming a full adult.

"Right!" And thus the little one lead them on at a brisk pace, somehow seeming to give off more authority than her age and size should allow. Naiad wasn't being nearly as bad as when she was about water, though, oh gods . . . Then she became outright incorrigible, territorial as a mother with children. Probably the only reason she was exuding this overdose of confidence was to reestablish the strong image of herself she had had up until she had met that boy Urban. Crumbling under just one meager insult, well . . . it was hardly mature. No sir, this girl was on the rebound now!

"Of course they wouldn't threaten our pack," she said as-a-matter-of-factly as they walked. "Ours is really big and tight-knit and more family than any other pack out there. And we have lots of territory. And we're one of the oldest packs around, so tons of wolves know about us." She spoke with pride, almost like a princess herself even though she was only distantly related to the male alpha. "I heard that there's this pack, though, that goes around bullying others, asking for 'tribute'; whatever that means. Can you imagine? Ooo, if they ever come near this border, I'll scare them off myself!"

Larka nodded and trotted after the little pup a smile spread over her maw as they went. It felt good to be a part of something even if the others were younger than her. It was nice to be able to talk with someone, made her feeling lighter of heart than she had been in a long time. "Yes, even when I was wandering when I was younger I knew of this pack." she said nodding her head. Her pale eyes looked around, taking in the familiar scenery as they went along, out towards the borders.

A shiver spread over Larka as the talk of the Reign of Terror came up. She had heard the whispers of their command for a tribute, the idea struck fear in her heart at the idea that a pack could believe themselves so strong and above other to command sacrifice of a fellow pack member to them. And the moon and sun only knew what would happen to the poor wolves who would surely be turned over to this pack. "A Tribute.. in their case is something like a sacrifice." she said shivering again. "They expect each pack to turn over a wolf to them who the moon only knows what purposes." she sighed closing her eyes, trying to push the terrible images she imaged that had cropped up in her mind.

A small smile spread over her maw again as she let out a weak laugh. "Oh I don't think you'll scare them off Naiad, they are a very nasty and scary bunch from what I have heard." she said shaking her head. But she enjoyed the enthusiasm of the little bright pup.

Fizzle shuddered. It sounded like those frightful stories he had heard from others wolves in the pack clearing. A tribute to their pack? Who ever had that kind of power? In fact, what kind of pack thought they were so macho enough they could take a wolf from each pack whenever they wanted and whoever they wanted. Inside, Fizzle promised to himself never to stray too far by himself. No way did the young gray male want to become a pack member of them.

"Oh d-dear. Larka you will protect us won't you? I wouldn't like it very much if I had to separated from all of you. I just got use to this place you know?" the adolescent said. His voice was slightly shaky. So he wasn't the bravest wolf in the pack but he sure did have a voice. Fizzle was quite glad his pack was large and tight-knit. It wouldn't be so nice to live in a pack full of wolves who couldn't care a tails worth for other pack members.

Naiad scoffed. What had she picked up, a couple of sissies? "Relax, guys, they won't harm us either way," the pup told them, quite miffed that Fizzle didn't look to her for protection too. So what if she was a pup? She could still fight! And clearly Larka was blind, because she apparently wasn't aware of the tale of how Naiad had scared off Urban after a fight - which, by the way, she still thought she won. Really, it took guts to ward off intruders! And it seemed like this pair didn't have a lot of it. Where was Twix when you needed her?

"I'll scare them off if I darn well please," Naiad went on to say with a slight hmph. "It's more than just size that wins fights anyway. I can protect you both if anything happens. Besides, Alas might be really sweet, but Crunch isn't someone that you cross. I heard," and here she dropped her voice to a conspiratal whisper, "that he got his name because he sometimes munches on the bones of his fallen foes. Crunch crunch crunch!"

"Naiad" hissed Larka in a scolding manner. A wolf was prone to pride, but to be full of pride to the point of a swelled head and the belief of abilities beyond ones own capability would ultimately lead to their eventual destruction. She had always been humble herself, but in her travels she had seen the fate of wolves who had believed beyond what they could, they heads swollen with unattainable dreams and the inflated ego that they could do anything.

"It is best to act on the side of caution, you should know this. A wolf who believes nothing can hurt them will only lead themselves to disaster. There is a time for pride and strength, but to think so highly of oneself to be better that all of their enemies is a fool." she growled lowly. She wasn't being rude or mean, as she wasn't the pups mother it wasn't her place to scold the pup, but she could tell her the truth of the world.

Even being a slight wolf she could easily hurt the pup, but she never would, only in the most dire of circumstances would she resort to fighting, fight of flight was in all of their natures, their instincts. She drifted back and nudged Fizzle forward a little, the poor boy and she came level with him she whispered. "Do not worry yourself, we are not likely to run into anyone or anything. Little miss sunshine up there thinks a bit to big for her tail." she sneezed lightly in laughter.

Noting this lesson meant for Naiad, Fizzle could see why this lesson was so important. Fizzle gave a small grin at Larka and replied, "I'm okay now. I think.." Fizzle still wasn't feeling so great, the thought of the Reign of Terror coming and snatching up wolves for their own liking.

The adolescent continued to walk with his new company. Maybe they would be friends, him, Larka and Naiad. That is, if they wanted to be friends with him. Fizzle did need to go out some more. More exploring and more learning. He noted that as well.

It was just then that he looked up to see a beautiful red robin. "Oh look!" he said in a hushed tone, staring in awe at its beauty. It chirped a beautiful note and Fizzle had the biggest urge to respond, yet he didn't. What would they think of him talking and singing to birds? They would probably tell everyone what a maniac he was.
