The early hatching was a boon, as far as T'rus was concerned. It meant getting the feast over with and getting to the barracks early, early enough to have some time to think. He needed that. So, with toasts and well wishes finished he moved with the small crowd of weyrlings into the barracks. It was easy, getting Akerth settled, the brown didn't require much.

Indeed, almost as soon as they reached their assigned bunk, Akerth was settled on his shelf. The brown was obviously sleepy, T'rus could feel the weight of that exhaustion weighing on him through their bond. Still, Akerth sat, his head high, his feet tucked beneath him, and watched the others as they settled. After all, if he didn't, who would make sure they were doing it right?

For his part, T'rus leaned against Akerth's perch, appearing to watch the goings ons along with his dragon. In truth, he was barely aware of anything outside his own head. He was simply reasonably good at looking attentive.

Tomorrow, work begins. The brown commented, with every sign of contentment at the thought.

Y'ul had sworn she would never carry her dragon around, a dislike towards people who did such rooted in her mind, yet as she moved to leave the feast and found herself unable to rouse Erath from her sleep ( both verbally and mentally ) the Green was lifted into her arms. It was a hard carry to be certain, Erath a little large and awkward in Y'uls arms rather then just heavy, but none the less the new Jr. Weyrling was successfully moving her dragon from point A to point B. It was slow going, the woman having to stop and take a break every now and then, but she none the less made it towards the barracks before she felt her arms to start to give out.

Y'ul was pretty sure that along the way Erath had woken up, a new sensation in her mind letting her know more about her partner than anyone else in the world, and Y'ul couldn't help but wonder if the Green had planned this all, seeing as she made no effort to let Y'ul actually know she was awake and wanted down. Erath seemed more than content to be carried, and by the time they reached the entrance to the Weyrling barracks Y'ul set the beast down and rubbed her arms.

"That's the first and last time I've ever doing that. If you can't be bothered to wake up when it's time to leave a place then I can't be bothered to bring you with me. You can just stay there until you decide to come where I am for all I care."

You don't really mean that, but all right. I will try to remember that.

There was sarcasm, were it possible, in the little one's voice as they talked outside, not really going in yet. Y'ul didn't know her exact room as it were, and for now she was content to try and catch her breath. She was still rubbing her arms, mildly cursing at their ache.

Spotting Erath, Akerth allowed himself a huffing sort of sigh. The events of the hatching already behind him now with the new press of his bond and his responsibilities, he still remembered her antics, or lack of antics, back on the sands. Really, the whole thing could have gone much more smoothly. It was, disappointing, and it reflected poorly on him.

Erath will require watching, T'rus. The brown commented, lowering his head to nudge His lightly in the shoulder.

T'rus, studying Y'ul without being able to call up any distinct memories from candidacy. Yule, or something, wasn't it? A healer, he was fairly sure. Well, no time to learn like the present. Pushing himself to his feet, he smiled casually in the direction of the greenrider.

"You're a healer, right?" He called out, not yet stepping away from Akerth's side. "Or do I have you confused with another guy?"

Erath impressed to a female. Akerth interjected, disapproval obvious in his tone.

Really? Well, too late now. Just have to hope I haven't ruined things already.

Figuring he'd apologize when Y'ul took exception to the statement, he forged ahead, "I'm T'rus. I think I've seen you a few times, but I'm terrible with names."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 17, 2010 7:23 pm

Y'ul looked up as someone called out to her, unsure if it was really in her direction or not, but seeing as there was no one else around save for her and another guy, she took it to be for her.

"Hm, no you've got the right guy. Name's Y'ul, and yes I used to be a Healer. Got reminded pretty harshly this morning that I'm not anymore though, but I figure it works out. Never saw much in that line of future for a guy like me."

Yulu turned her attention now fully towards the person calling to her, trying to place their face and their dragon. She looked down at her own lifemate, curious. She didn't know his name, she'd already gotten Erath and was at the tables when the boy had Impressed, so she was more or less reduced to asking.

Akerth. He broke my shell.

"Ah yes, I do remember."

Y'ul hadn't quite gotten the whole 'speak with your mind' thing down just yet, but it wasn't as though she was eager to practice. She had no one to impress by being advanced, and speaking aloud suited her just fine.

"Anyway, is there something I can help you with?"

Well, he hadn't been far off on the name and profession at least, even if he'd managed to mistake the woman's gender. Then again, if she wasn't going to correct him, maybe he'd been right to make the mistake in the first place. Well, it was something to note, anyway, even if it wasn't a subject that seemed best to pursue at the moment.

"Y'ul. I'll remember that." And he would, though he might later claim to have forgotten it again. It'd be good, having a healer among the weyrlings. Someone who could respond quickly if anything went wrong during lessons. He remembered now, that Y'ul had reentered the sands at the same time he and Akerth had.

I could have handled it, if they'd let me. Akerth interjected, irritably.

T'rus gave the young dragon a rough pat. I know.

"Akerth is still upset about that blue's antics. Did you catch who he impressed to?" he asked, already getting the feeling that Y'ul wouldn't be lingering long if he didn't get to a point. And, of course, he didn't have one. He just wanted to get a sense of the people he'd be training alongside. Well, there was no reason not to admit that. "No. Sorry if I'm detaining you. Just figure we're all going to be living pretty close for awhile, so it's best if we all know each other."
PostPosted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:41 am

"He impressed to a guy named Ngaran, though I can't account for taste in that. The guy's a brute and his dragon's a thief, so we'll all have to be watching out for ourselves and our dragons, not to mention keeping an eye on our possessions I'm the person closest to them in terms of bunking order, if anything I've heard from J'ev is correct, so I've got the most issues on my hands."

Y'ul didn't hesitate to speak of her dislike for the former vintner or blue, the girl wondering why so many dragons in the Weyr had issues that couldn't be fixed. Thus far she was pretty sure Erath was sound, if not just sharding lazy to the point it was going to make her mad, so she couldn't make judgments on the others of the clutches. She'd thought the Brown before her to have some issues as well, though not nearly as bad as the two blues she had the fortune of knowing.

"But to make it easier on you, you're not bothering me. The only thing happening right now is Erath wants to go back to sleep, but I'm sure that's about all she'll be wanting to do. She doesn't want oiled, just a nap, and I was planning on taking her in to get her cleaned up before letting her try to sleep until I get her moving again. You and Akerth, was it? You're both welcome to join in the rub down, since two heads not fully knowing what to do might be better than one."

I will not allow Cavumuth to get out of line again, T'rus. Akerth allowed himself a low rumble of displeasure at the very idea of it. The Brown had a certain abiding fondness for all his clutchmates, but it didn't make him blind to their faults. If anything, he was hyper-aware of them, anxious for the chance to help those around him improve and achieve.

"Akerth says to let us know if the Blue causes you or Erath any trouble. He'd be happy to have a word with him." T'rus couldn't personally remember meeting a Ngaran, though he was sure he must have at least once. It didn't matter, he surely would soon enough, and then he'd have a chance to see whether Y'ul's assessment was accurate.

I did not say that. Akerth pointed out.

No, you didn't. But you and I need to have a talk about lying. Your going to need to learn how if you really want us to lead. He gave the Brown a firm push on the shoulder, rousing him to his feet.

"That sounds like an excellent idea. I have a feeling that before too long, we're going to be experts in dragon scrubbing whether we like it or not. Might as well get an early start."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 20, 2010 6:10 pm

"You'll have to scrub a lot more than I will, what with him being a Brown. Erath here will never get to even half his size if I'm right, though given her nature that I've learned so far I won't be surprised if she becomes large in girth. Just my luck to be stuck with the dragon who seems more content to let me doing the walking and talking for both of us."

You've never had a problem doing more than your fair share anyway, so why start doing less now?

Shut it.

Y'ul was impressed with how she remembered to speak with her mind on that one, the slap a bit more Impressive when only Erath seemed to be able to hear it, and the Green would have frowned were it possible for her to do so. Y'ul felt a little sliver of victory emerge, thus far having won out in verbal combat, but she knew it probably wouldn't last. No rider could stay forever cruel at something connected to their heart.

"But yeah, I'm not too worried about what that Blue will try to pull. Erath can take care of herself and I'm sure that the guy won't try anything with me, lest he find himself at the bad end of a fist or Weyr chores."

She motioned for T'rus to follow her as she spoke, remembering where she had been told there would be oils to use on their dragons to get rid of post-hatching itch. While Erath may not have been complaining just yet, it would start soon and Y'ul wanted to get a jump on that.

Hearing Y'ul's complaint about Erath's lack of initiative Akerth gave a low rumble of approval, willing to acknowledge good sense, even when it did come from a female rider. Mind, a male would have put it better, would keep Erath better in line, but at least this rider had no intent of spoiling her.

You should not burden your rider so. He sent the comment to the green while all but standing at attention beside T'rus, walking at an even pace when his rider began to do so.

"Yes, and he's no small Brown at that. Thought his egg would hatch into a Bronze, at the touching." He'd thought that egg would hatch into his Bronze. But, no, nevermind. It'd hatched into his dragon, his Akerth, and with the euphoria of the sands still warm within him, he could not resent that. "Of course, it's that Bronze queen's rider who will really be kept busy with scrubbing."

He glanced at Erath, considering the fact that Akerth's opinion of the green didn't seem far from her rider's. But this was the dragon that had all but refused to hatch. "I'm sure you'll keep her lean and fighting fit. You don't strike me as the type to shirk training."
PostPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 8:54 am

You should learn to keep your opinions to yourself. No one likes a Brown who thinks he's a Bronze.

Erath snapped her tone back at her clutchsib as he made a remark to her about Y'ul and how she dealt with Y'ul, daring him to say anything further. It wasn't that she was being posessive or snotty, hardly, but it was more or less she still hadn't quite forgiven him from waking her from her nap on the sands. They shell had been comfy and warm, and he had to go and make her get out of it. Sure she had gotten to Y'ul shortly afterward and now was with the person her whole being had longed for, but still! Nap, shard it!

Still Erath got up from where she sitting and followed Y'ul despite still thinking about a nap, her body not starting to itch though since her Rider had made a mention of it, and when the pair reached a spot where some oils had been left out ( by whom, who knows ) and dropped down again, though this time into a full lay. No need to walk if they were going to just stay right here and get oiled.

"I suppose I can light a fire under her and keep her going, but for how long before either one of us has turned blue in the face remains to be seen. I can only be pushed so far and I'm pretty sure she'd going to be testing my limits to the best of her abilities."

Bronzes. Too proud of their hides to see beyond them. If Erath's snapping irritated, the Brown certainly didn't let it show. There was no heat in Akerth's tone, no touch of yellow or red in his eyes. This was the truth, at least as far as he knew. I would not entrust our clutch to Morgath, who sees a green tail and loses focus, or to Pipith, who worries only about his own status.

"Dragons choose the rider they need." T'rus replied as they reached the oils. Akerth settled into a sitting position, his wings slightly spread, his attention still on Erath. "Akerth here, for example, needs to learn some tact."

He knelt beside the Brown in question, not yet starting to oil but taking a moment just to admire the dragon that was his lifemate. Such a handsome dragon, and big enough, at this time, to be a small Bronze. Bigger than Pipith, even.

"And maybe I'll learn how to be direct. I can't say you need to relax Y'ul, I hardly know you. But maybe there is something she needs to teach you, as well."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 27, 2010 9:24 pm

"I know, I know. Everyone says that dragons match to us because there's something we need from them and I'm sure I'll find out, but I just don't know if I'm willing to wait that long without blowing up first. I've got my personality and she'd got hers, and we're going to smash heads for a while until we figure one another out. Hopefully she'll give in before I will, because I'm the type of guy who won't back down in a fight."

A verbal fight anyway, as Y'ul had backed and walked away from many a physical one growing up. Despite how hard she could talk and walk she was actually pretty non-violent, her actions against Cass at the Hatching the first time she'd honestly acted on her thoughts of revenge. It was easy enough to always think of harming someone else, but it was even easier not to put thoughts into actions when one knew the prize waiting at the end of the boat for those who obeyed like good children. Her prize had been Erath, whatever that was worth.

Basically you're calling all of our siblings failures then, with an attitude like that. It's no wonder none of us seem to like you or want you around, with your mighty pride and attitude. I'd be surprised if your rider doesn't get excluded from things based on how you treat the rest of us. Many riders don't take well when theirs are insulted.

Of course Erath spoke with a faint hope that Y'ul would actually stand up for her if insults came, she had seen a faint trace of that at the hatching grounds in regards to that annoying blue and green pair, but considering how much Y'ul talked about Erath being lazy. . . it was a little unlikely. Still they had a bond together, one that would only grow more powerful with the passing of Turns.

T'rus had begun work oiling Akerth, starting, somewhat inexpertly, with the Brown's shoulder-blades. He kept half his attention focused on Y'ul as he worked, glancing up frequently. Perhaps that contributed a bit to the messy results. "Then you'll butt heads." He gave a little shrug, but perhaps it was easier from his perspective. He and Akerth were getting along swimmingly. "What I mean is, you have your view, she has hers. Maybe neither of you have to win."

He might have said more, but was distracted and forced to jump back a bit as Akerth turned and snapped in Erath's direction. Yet if the action was abrupt and threatening, there was no anger in it. Akerth's eyes continued to swirl with the same comfortable blue. The point, that he was the larger of them, was hard to miss.

"Akerth?" Not privy to the dragons' conversation, T'rus reacted with surprise and evident disapproval.

Do not worry yourself. My clutchmate forgets her place. The dragon replied, his gaze still fixed on Erath.

You would do well to learn the tact of which my T'rus speaks, little green. His tone was low and level. He sounded irritated, as he always did. But it was a mild sort of irritation. This was, after all, exactly the sort of behavior he'd expect from Erath. My clutchmates do not fail. Morgath is distracted. Pipith is proud. You are lazy. All are flawed. But we will not fail. I will not allow it.

He gave a sighing sort of stretch and leaned into T'rus, who had taken up oiling again. Do not worry yourself over the place of my T'rus. I did not choose against the traditions of my Weyr.

"I get the impression they don't like each other." T'rus said, working oil along the joints in Akerth's wings.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:38 am

Although Akerth's snap had no malice behind it, Erath's sure as Faranth did. Her eyes turned red for a brief moment as she let her own head swing closer and her jaws snap shut, creating a sound that echoed about the group of four. Her own words were sure to echo in the minds of all that were present, not just in that of the Brown before her.

Your place is not above me, so you had best remember that as well foolish Brown. Were you to try anything with me again that disrupts my pace, you will find yourself in need of just more than your rider.

As quickly as the snap had come it passed and Erath's head was down and eyes closed once more, her body moving more willingly into Y'ul's rubbing hands. The rider gave a weary sigh as she tried to piece it all together into one nice slate, recalling that these two probably have had bad blood since the egg incident on the sands. Just her luck that her dragon actually had someone she didn't like right off.

"Whatever gave you the idea that they didn't like one another? I think they're hitting it off rather well, wouldn't you say?"

The sarcasm in her tone was strong enough that it was practically dripping onto the ground though her face managed to keep a look of general impassiveness. Already she was trying to sort how to deal with this issue from day one, not even a full two or three candlemarks since the shells cracked.

Before Akerth could even think about snapping again, T'rus had a not so gentle grip around the new hatched dragon's headknob. His expression, for the first time, had slipped from a mild expression of amusement or happiness into something darker and harder. "Enough." His tone was low, but firm. Just that one hard word.

Akerth. We do not cause scenes. We do not allow scenes to happen around us. His mental tone was no gentler, though the levels of meaning were richer, more complex.

Erath is sound. Noise. Do not worry. Akerth, catching on to T'rus's irritation, didn't seem contrite or concerned.

It looks bad. She's a green. Ridden by a female. No one will expect her to do well. She doesn't matter. We matter. We must be above it. With that sharp rebuke, T'rus stood up, regaining a wry version of his earlier smile.

"I think that's our cue to depart. The Weyrlingmaster won't be happy if they fight, and he's already sore about our going back on the sands earlier. It was good to speak with you, Y'ul. Sorry about Akerth."
