i dont do vibrato constantly because it is rather new to me, but i can do it. i use minimal arm movement in vibrato. its all about the wrist movement. as my instructor explained it when he was teaching my class vibrato, for practice, its like polishing the strings. get into position, dont squeeze, and just move your fingers up and down the string. that can help with the movement. then just pick a note, dont squeeze too hard, and practice vibrato on it. smile

If you want to practice learning vibrato, my teacher said to buy a small container of Tic-Tacs or another thing that comes in a package like that. Put it in your hand and shake it up and down slowly [without instrument. XD]. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Then another trick you can try is just starting with the viola in resting position, you know, just tucked under your arm. Practice the polishing technique there first, then "sneak up on it". You move it a little closer and a little closer to your shoulder and before you know it you're in playing position! biggrin Another thing you can try is to glue or tape a feather to a popsicle stick. Then attach it to your wrist witha rubber band, and while you're playing, try to make the feather wave at you =) It's kinda cheesy, but I know a lot of people it worked well for. Just don't think about it too much. I'm still far from a master, but I notice that when I think about doing it, I do it all wrong. But when I just feel it and let my tricks and practice take over, I do much better. They biggest key though is to be relaxed =)
