Dani and Parker were fighting. Fighting. A perfectly fine lunch had turned into a nightmare all because Dani was incapable of minding her own damn business. No matter how much Parker cared for her, he could not find it in himself to forgive her for how she'd forced herself into a place she should not go. At least not now. His family was off-limits to her aside from the seldom-spoken slivers of memory he shared about his mother from time to time. Didn't she understand that?
The stress of the fight had Parker cartwheeling backward toward his previous state of jaded bitterness, and the taste was so acidic in his mouth that he could hardly stand his own thoughts. Sitting alone in his room at Hillworth was terrible. All he did was think of her. It had been a few days since they had spoken, and he had no intention of being the one to cave first. He was mad; he had a right to be mad. How had he violated her privacy?
All of his inner turmoil manifested in a desperate need for activity. Parker -- who typically liked to sit on his computer or read all day -- was suddenly going for runs. Yes, runs. He even went to the Art Center and painted a ceramic pot. He didn't want to take it back to Hillworth so he passed it off to a homeless man, and then cut across the street to a line of shops. Parker was just starting to save up money again after having to pay for his cast, but it didn't mean he could suddenly spend as he pleased.
Still, Parker needed to do something, and after running that morning, he knew it needed to be something relaxed.
Up the strip, there was a small little store with a hand-carved wooden sign jutting out over the sidewalk. Parker had been there once before to shop for a Valentine's gift for Dani. It sold fair trade goods like painted boxes, metal works, and earrings from other cultures. Parker hadn't found anything for Dani then, but he decided to go look again. They had these nice journals in there too. Parker remembered them from his last visit. Not moleskin, but certainly of high quality. Maybe a little shopping would help him forget?
Slipping into the store, Parker breathed in the scent of incense and musk and tried desperately to forget about Dani -- at least for a few minutes.

-Aurora was not usually the sort to wander around while chatting on her cellphone. She found it quite unclassy in fact.. the way some people seemed hooked to the things.. chatting on them in resturants while others tried to enjoy their meals.. half ignoring the cashier while they blabbed on when they should be paying.. chittering and chattering obnoxiously loud with conversations that shouldn't just be spread around for all to hear.
But this was Papa. And she hadn't talked to him in atleast two weeks! Not since their talk when he'd received record of her grades.. when his voice had been filled with a disapointment that was entirely foreign and heartbreaking. She couldn't even explain why her grades had fallen... he certainly wouldn't have believed her.. that she was a schoolgirl with magical powers fighting evil in darkened alleys. Heck.. IF he did believe her he'd never let her do it. She could only pray she never ended up in the hospital like some of the other scouts. So far she'd been lucky, even her worst injuries were things she could nurse from her dorm room.-
"Oh no, I've been enjoying myself some. After homework is done first of course." -She assured softening her voice a little as she stepped into the charming little shop. It was still perhaps louder then others might have liked, but she atleast had the decency not to shout.-
"I've joined the ballroom dance club after school. It seems very nice. Like those ettiquite classes you see in movies. I think we'll even be having some of those debutante balls." -She crooned as she made her way down the aisle, pausing to glance at the jewelry with soft interest.-
"Mhmm.. Yes, I thought it would be a nice way to meet people in a proper and pleasant setting" -Boy people... but she neglected to say that to him.. or even outloud. There was a war waging in her head and hormones. Boys were bad.. disgusting.. horrible. And yet.. she wanted so badly just a little attention from them.-
"I went to a big party for singles at a fondue place for Valentines too. It was nice. Really yummy food, lots of really nice people to talk to. But how are things at the ranch? Are the boys behaving?" -She sounded more like a mother than a daughter.. of course.. that'd almost been what she was to them.
Her smile faded softly, tone taking on a soft sympathy when she spoke again, pausing in her digging through the woodcrafted jewlery.- "Ohhh.. papa I'm sorry. I can't believe they're bothering you again!"
"Everyone knows how much that farm means to you! Some people play so dirty. EVERYONE in town knows that the Peace River Ranch raises the finest animals."
"Don't worry Papa, I'm sure it'll all turn out like last time" -Her fingers petted at the phone softly, as if somehow he'd get the comforting motion himself even despite the thousands of miles between them.- "Just don't let it stress you out alright.. Things will be okay"
((This is getting pretty long, so I'll finish up the rest of the phone conversation in the next post XD))

Parker slipped toward the corner of the store where the journals and candles sat on dark wooden shelves. A half wall stood between him and the opposite corner, and the empty space was filled by hanging witch's balls and ornate tapestries. He lifted a light blue journal with green etchings of leaves on it. Blue like Dani's hair. Green like Dani's eyes.
Damnit.
Parker put the journal down and moved over a few steps. He picked up a black journal with white and yellow pinpricks all over it. In the center, a large carved star stood out from the background. A little too bold for him, but still pretty. He had just started to set it back down when the voice of a girl on the other side of the half-wall reached his ears.
Ugh. Parker hated when people talked on their cellphones in the middle of stores like that. He really had no desire to hear about the mundane bullshit of other people's lives while trying to select toothpaste or tube socks. He had enough of his own mundane bullshit, thank you very much. There was something about the voice that kept him listening, following along with what the girl was saying. Something about her father's ranch... people bugging him.
Did he know this girl? There was something familiar in the voice, but also not. His memory was too muddled to pull out a face. Reaching one hand out, Parker pushed ahead a tapestry of an elephant and peeked through at the girl on the phone.
Oh. Well. It was Aurora. It was that girl from the metal shop.
They had met so long ago, but Parker never forget an annoying face. She had been quite the brat, even when he was helping her. Oh, so her daddy was in trouble? Hah! That sounded great to him. For a moment, Parker forgot about Dani and focused all of his energy into eavesdropping on the spoiled girl from Crystal.

-Silent for a long moment, listening to the words coming from the other end Aurora began to move once more, passing by the rest of the jewelry before stopping at the collection of sculptures and decorative pieces. It'd been the real reason she'd come today.. to see if she couldn't find something nice to help decorate the open area near her vanity. She wasn't sure exactly what she was looking for.. but oh well.
Her eyes paused on a sculpture of a dancer made with metal wirings. It was pretty the way the design flowed... but so barren too.. On to the next one, a more classical greek statuette made of stone.. or some faux stone. Her fingers brushed the figure lightly.- "This lawsuit will be just like the last. I'm sure there is no basis at all for it. People see what they want to see whether it is the truth or not."
"You know you're in the right. You always are." -Not that she'd had alot of choice, but Aurora had always been a daddy's girl.
Standing straight up, she nodded towards whatever was being said on the phone, fingers running through the handful of braids that traced down her back. Eyes gazing lightly at the store as a whole.- "Well you know you can call me whenever you want papa. I never get tired of listening."
"In fact if you don't call me within a week or two, I'll be calling you" -She threatened playfully, smile drawing across her face.-
"I love you too. I'll keep my eyes out for that package. Talk to you soon." -Her eyes glanced briefly across the hanging tapestries as she snapped the phone shut, sliding it into her purse. Geometric designs, flowers, elephants, eyes... wait. Eyes?

Oh, so her father was facing a lawsuit? He ran some kind of farm, and people were after him. Parker logged away the name of the farm for later googling. He could search the Clerk of Courts wherever her father lived to find the actual lawsuit claim. By the end of today, Parker could have a whole blog post ready to go to expose this privileged princess and her fat cat father. Parker didn't know much about Aurora, but if she had the money, he'd be able to find something about her family on the internet. Hopefully, at least.
Excitement bubbled in Parker. It had been a very long time since The Proletariat Provost had put out an entry. Some of his more dedicated supporters began to fear he had died, or that there had been some massive coup against him. Parker sent out a few messages to let people know that he was deep in an investigation that required his attention. In truth... he was just in deep with Dani. It was hard to spit bile and hatred when you were so happy. Yeah, were.
A smirk crossed Parker's narrow features, chest tightening at the thought of spending an afternoon the old way, the way before Dani. See? He could be without her. Yeah, he would be just fine.
The girl hung up her phone, and Parker started to move away. He wasn't fast enough. They locked eyes. Straightening, Parker lifted the elephant tapestry and gave it a good look. See? He wasn't staring at her, not at all! He was just looking at this hideous elephant tapestry.
Totally innocent. Totally.

-It took her a moment to register the idea, glancing at the face again as he appeared to look at the hanging cloth. Had it been any other face.. she might even have accepted the attempt to look innocent. But after not one, but TWO unpleasant encounters with the familar face she wasn't about to give that luxury.
Eavesdropping wasn't even THAT big of a deal. A little rude perhaps.. but she'd had it coming by chatting on the phone in a public place. These things did not cross her mind however, logic thrown to the wall for emotion.
Smile fading to a look quite commonly known as 'staring daggers', she made her way around the table, stepping closer to the boy. He was trouble incarnate. And now he'd been caught.-
"Casing out the place for a little shoplifting?" -She asked loudly enough for the clerk to hear if he cared to pay attention.-

Aw hell naw.
Parker lowered the tapestry. This girl wanted to fight? Well, good news for her -- for once, he wanted a confrontation. "I'm surprised you decided to slum it in here. I thought you were more interested in the kinds of goods made by children in companies too poor to be considered good enough for you. Is this your community service for the month?" Compared to Parker, Aurora looked like she was dripping in diamonds. He wore a pair of holey jeans, a sweater that was two sizes too big, and shoes that were duct-taped together on one toe.
Yep, not the picture of class.

-They were opposites in so many ways. His dark hair contrasting her ivory, her feminine but classy shirt and knee length skirt his.. could you even call those hand me downs? Her optimism and usual pleasantness however was nowhere to be found. She was in fact meeting him pretty head to to in nastiness today. Aurora could be a real hypocrite sometimes.
She was a b***h at times, true facts. But it had next to nothing to do with her wealth, which was perhaps why Parker.. or Poison as she'd dubbed him in her mind.. rubbed her the wrong way so much. Back at home all of her friends had been less well off than her. She'd even gone to a school that had 'harvest days' instead of snow days. She never went out of her way to make anyone feel beneath her. So why the hell did he always try to throw it out at her? At the moment she kind of wanted to make him feel like he was beneath her.-
"So what if it is? Someone has got to keep the stores afloat. What with Hillsworth riff raff cruising through town."
"What's the biggest thing you've stolen hmmm? I bet you know ALL the tricks."

With every word, Aurora slipped deeper into Parker's stereotype of Crystal girls. He assumed she was stuck-up and elitist because of her wealth. The things she was saying only confirmed it.
Parker glanced up to her. "Riff raff," he said, and then glanced back down to the tapestry. "That's a big word. Word of the day calendar finally paying off for you? That's good to hear. I'm very happy for you." He hung up the tapestry, blocking her from his view and crossed to a wall covered in decorative mirrors a few feet from where Aurora stood.
There were a lot nastier things that Parker could say, but his impulse was still to be passive, even in his attacks.

-She didn't mind that he was moving, following after like a predator, albeit slowly, pretending to look at the things on the counter before her. She didn't need to see him, she knew he was there.. She took his insult, twisting it again.- "You know.. if eight letters is a big word to you, perhaps you need the calender?"
"I'm quite glad to hear you are happy though." -She piped after a moment, feigning a 'good for you' tone in the most condecending way she could manage, as she turned a picture frame over in her hands.- "From our meetings before I'd gathered that you were a real negative nancy, so I'm happy to hear you've taken my advice and chippered up a bit."

Parker spared Aurora one glance. "Oh, you count," and then glanced back to the merchandise. He didn't want to get in a screaming match, but a little verbal sparring was fine by him. He needed to take his aggression out on someone, and he'd already marked Aurora as a person of little worth to him. Why should he spare her feelings or try to mend anything?
He made sure to pursue casually, as if he didn't care at all that she was there, as if her presence didn't affect him in the slightest.
Wait -- what advice? "I must've missed the lavender-scented memo of advice you sent my way. Or maybe I just couldn't read it." Parker threw her a belittling stare. "You know, too many typos." He actually had no idea what she was talking about, not even a little bit.

-She had slipped.. she realized it a little too late. Because while they had had meetings before.. he wasn't privy to that knowledge.. to him it would only have seemed like one. So she was glad when he didn't question the statement, silently relieved.
It was not particularly long lived though. The frown on her lips grew as he spoke, fingers tightening momentarily around the trinket in her hands.
Did he really not remember their first meeting anymore? Their back and forth bickering over whether the world was good or bad. His obnoxious insistance that noone was good or did anything good for anyone else without some alterior motive. She wished she could set it aside that easily, that the words didn't come back now and again to irritate her and ruffle her feathers. If he didn't remember though.. there wasn't really a point in trying to explain it to him and fill him in.-
"Sorry about that, I'm only human. We can't all be robots. Or would that be snakes?"
"Which would you say you were, hmm? Cold and heartless? Or slimey and venom spitting?"

Parker remembered the first encounter, but after a while, everything Aurora said started to sound like wakka-wakka-wakka to him. He had received a very bizarre, very Big Brother carnation on Valentine's Day that had a similar nature, but he doubted the girl would give enough of a s**t about him to go to those lengths. This was only the second time he'd met her. Normally, he wouldn't be so rude, but he was in a bad mood and she was really really annoying.
He checked the price on a large mirror with stained glass edges (realizing with a pang that he was thinking of it for Dani) and then took a slow step away from Aurora toward the incense. "I would call you supercilious and puerile, but I don't have the time to wait for you to find a dictionary," he said. Parker intended to end the conversation there. He enjoyed giving her s**t, but he wanted to have the last word.
Shooting her a bored stare, Parker crossed to the other side of the room where a collection of paintings hung. He intended to peruse them until she left. Then he could declare himself victorious in his own mind.

-She had plenty more she could say, plenty of pent of frustrations she would be happy to unleash on someone she'd completely written off as having to behave in front of, and she was livid. There was something else there.. something other then the obnoxiousness of his dowry nature. It was the way he stole all the control of the situation from her. His higher then though attitude, his quick witted twists into insults. Aurora HATED not being in control.. and Parker had the special knack of slamming her down like a five year old.
And at the moment.. she wanted to act like one. To scream and tantrum about how stupid he was, and how his absolute horrible nature was way the world treated him horribly. But.. but.
She didn't know the words he'd just stated she wouldn't know, and she could feel the flush of frusteration and embarrasment on her cheeks. She wanted to go.. and go now. But that would just make her frusterated AND make her have wasted an hour or more of her day. Her voice lifted, but it was soft now, and if he was actually looking, he probably see the glittering of water at the edges of her eyes.- "There are other skills and motivations just as worthwhile and important to humanity as intellegence Parker.."
-He'd won this round.
Retreating she grabbed the metal dancer, moving to the counter to pay before she left. She wasn't even really sure she wanted it but.. she didn't particularly want to hang around either. She'd make due.-

Parker barely glanced her way, and he did not notice the glittering of tears in her eyes, even if he noted the softness of her voice. Was she so easy to back down? It wasn't like Parker to be empathetic, and so he wasn't. There would be no apology from him.
When she left the shop, a smile lit across his face. It hung for a few moments, and then disappeared. He was alone again, and the memory of Dani came racing back into his head like a burst of electricity. The argument with Aurora had been a band-aid on a hole in a dam wall. It didn't do Parker any good. It only hurt the girl's feelings and made the clerk at the counter shoot daggers at Parker's back.
What? She had started it. Why did he have to back down -- because he was the guy? Whatever. If she didn't want to argue, she should not have run her mouth. It wasn't his fault that she was dumb. It wasn't his fault that she was weak. Parker tried to think terrible things about Aurora, but the feeling in his chest was hollow. He was slipping backward, losing the warmth that Dani had brought into his life and receding into the dark corner where everything was a threat and everyone was out to make his life miserable.
A scowl set on his features, and after a few minutes, Parker left the store too, no purchase in hand, and disappeared down the street, cold wind whipping at his back. A skill more important than intelligence? Parker scoffed. Name one, he thought, pulling his coat tighter. Name one.
And then, a quiet voice in his head whispered: love.
