so, today I received an email from the landlord, stating that my roommate owes damn near $1600 in back rent, and has till saturday to pay or vacate. Which leaves me with damn near NO TIME to find a new roommate.
He says he will have it taken care of by friday, but seriously.. wtf.
why on ******** earth didn't he tell me he was so ******** far behind!?
I feel incredibly disrespected.
No bowls to smoke either, which really blows sad
So I really have no idea how lenient the landlord will be with getting a new roommate and paying the ******** back rent so I don't have to move.
I seriously JUST finished unpacking my room...

if he does not pay the back rent and leaves, I may have t sue him for back rent...

Damn. That sucks! Why are they just now telling you this?! Youre names on the lease... you should have been told the first month he didnt pay!!
I sure hope he pays... thats pretty lame.
A friend of mine owe 8 grand to a place she and he gf rented a few years ago... they both left and broke up at the time and since they couldnt find her gf (ex at the time) they just put all the debt on her.

He apparently has decided to move out at the end of the month.
I told him how I felt today, and let him know that it took all my willpower not to punch his ******** lights out and he got butthurt.

He has also been witholding mail from me, bills and notices and such. The landlord mailed out TWO late payment notices and a pay or vacate notice that I never saw.

Ugh... I'm so sorry... Roommate situations generally never turn out well. =/
As far as witholding mail... Thats illegal. You can report him to the post office or police, and possibly even press charges.
If you take it to court, you should totally go on People's Court.

The main question is if it is just your name on the lease, or both of you are on the lease. Most states will protect the other roommate (the one who does pay), and then your landlord would be the one to take legal action against him for the money.

I'm sorry to hear about your roommate trouble. We are having roommate problems as well. Our roommates are wanting to move out a month early before the lease is up and we have had to clean up EVERYTHING after them ever since we moved here...which has been almost a year. We are sick and tired of it and are moving in with someone else AS SOON as the lease is up. I can't wait!
I really hope things go well and you find a new roommate in time. Try talking to your landlord. He might be understanding.

So, I told my roommate today that I am gong to move out.
Told the landlord I would be out by the 20th.
Wheels are spinning, no turning back now.
