|| This RP takes place BEFORE Edel became Pregnant, and explains what exactly happened that night. ||
x
It was one of those lovely nights that rarely happen around this time of year. Sure, the air was still chilly, but sky was a treat to look at. Up above the moon was shining brightly, very close to full, and the stars popped out like mini suns. Edel had discovered a quaint little meadow to watch this lovely night in. It seemed to be the only truly clear location in a few miles. She was tired from her previous adventure into the ruins, so she was happy to have found such a lovely place to relax for the night.
"I just have this feelings somethings...going to happen tonight." Edel had a knack for foreshadowing, not in a true fortune teller kind of way, but in a way that everyone else does. Like, when you wake up in the morning and just know that the rest of the day is going to fail. With a flick of her head she glanced around the clearing, she was fairly blind at night, but unlike what most people and Soquili would assume about her, she wasn't blind. The blindfold was an odd tradition in her family, and she hardly ever took the time to explain it to anyone. If they assumed she was blind, she didn't care.

Sciophobia means fear of shadows, and for this stallion that is very literal. It matters not to him if the shadows are in the day or they linger thick darkness that is night, either way he has one firm belief - that they want to eat him.
It was for that reason that Scio only slept in the day and spent his evenings running and running and running away from the darkness that threatened to consume his soul. He would not, he could not, allow that to happen. He didn't want to die. How could other soquili relax in the shadows, how could they sleep at night? He would never understand. Never.
And so like on every other evening he once again found himself running with the hope that his constant movement would make it impossible for the shadows to catch him. He saw not the stars. He saw not the Moon. He saw nothing but his fear as his purple eyes shifted left and right in and effort to spy the enermy that surrounded him. Due to all the running night after night Scio was a very muscular stallion, beautiful in his own right although this was not something other appreciated since he never really stopped to socialise.
The darkness thickened around him, instantly forcing him to close his eyes in fear -he wouldn't let them get him. "NOOO!" he cried. Heart racing. Breath sharp. Panic settling into his mind he just ran.
Until suddenly he was forced to stop -crashing into something solid yet dainty, his wings crumpled under him as he fell to the ground with a crash. Eyes still firmly shut only one throught ran through his mind over and over again -the shadows had found him, desperation lingering in his mind he whispered in panic, "Please don't eat me!"
And then he waited....
And waited....
And waited....
....the shadows would eat him soon, he was sure of it.

There were some days when Edel wished her intuition wasn't so amazing. She'd only be alone for a good hour before she heard someone yelling out in the forest. She glanced to her right, then to her left. She wasn't exactly sure where it had come from, it seemed to echo in a thousand different directions. Was someone in trouble? She listened more carefully, and this time heard the sounds of hooves beating heavily and fast against the ground. It only sounded like one set of hooves though? What...was someone being attacked by a bat or something?
She was so busy trying to figure out whether she should help or not, that she didn't hear the stallion come into her little meadow until it was too late. He plowed right into her and the both tumbled to the ground. Was someone trying to attack her now? The only noise she made during the whole tumble accident was a small gasp from the impact, other wise she was fairly good at containing outbursts. She'd taken on a kolona once before and ever since then, not many things could scare her. When she finally made it back onto her feet, she wasn't sure what to make of the stallion that was still lying on the ground...whimpering.
What did he have to be afraid of? He was twice her size and he was asking her not to eat him? She would have thought it was a trick of some sort, but he stayed on the ground, shaking with his eyes shut. She watched him for a while, waiting to see if her might be tricking her, after all he looked like the type of Soquili that was attack another soquili without warning. But, he genuinely seemed to be afraid of something, and there was no way that something could be her.
"I um...promise not to eat you...?" She wasn't really sure what to say to him, or how to react to him running into her. She waited to see some kind of reaction out of him to her words.

Scio heard the words reach his ears but they echoed over and over again in his head along with his own throughts of -they are lying, it's a trick, the shadows will still eat you.
Panic, fear, shaking. Scio lay on the ground. Yet after a while of nothing seeming to happen he gained the courage to peek through one eye. It seemed the shadows had not yet pounced upon him although they still surrounded him, and before him was a dainty creature. Perhaps that was the true source of the voice he had heard? But how could he be sure that it was not a trick? The shadows where very devious afterall. You couldn't trust them. No no no no, you could never trust the shadows.
Slowly he pulled himself to his feet once more, head hanging low to the ground as he looked at her hooves. He gulped, opened his mouth as if he was going to say something before changing his mind and just standing there. He shook his head -was he just being silly? He turned his head left and then right to watch the shadows, they seemed to be keeping their distance for now and he could only think of two reasons. One -the creature before him was pure hearted and they could not venture closer to her. Two -the creature before him was controlling them so that she could trick him and consume him herself.
He looked up a little from her hooves to her neck and eventually her face. "Em.... are you sure you won't eat me?" He looked to the shadows again before adding, "...what about the shadows?" His body shook with his nerves.

Edel stood and waited for several more minutes before the Stallion responded to her voice at all. At first he didn't speak, he just peeped out at their surroundings with a bright purple eye. She couldn't help but love his eyes, or at least the one she say. She was fond of the color. The slowly, he began to pull himself to his feet, she realized for the first time just how long his main and tail were, and she could see his wings clearly now. He was with some kind of Kalona breed, or possibly a mutant, like herself.
If he were a kalona, he wasn't acting anything like one. He seemed skittish of her and their surroundings. Like something was going to jump out at him and eat him. It didn't take her long to realize that he really did think she was going to eat him! He was twice her size! What was going through his head? If anything, she should have been asking him that question. She stared at him puzzled not sure how to respond.
She first glanced around at the shadows, they didn't bother her at all really. Sure, maybe some small animal or something could be hiding in them, but she was fairly sure she could handle them. Besides, it was fairly well lite by the stars and moon this night.
"No...I won't eat you. I've always been more of a fruit person myself..." Or anything sweet really, she thought to herself, then glanced back at the shadows again. "I don't think there's anything in the shadows...was something...chasing you?" She asked, wondered if that was why he was worried about them.

This time he was watching as she spoke -so it was her voice he had heard earlier and not those of the shadows. Sometimes it was hard to distinguish since they often echoed within his head, yet for some reason they where silent now... what powers did this mare have? She looked strange enough to him, unlike any soquili he had ever observed in the past -was she a creation of the shadows afterall? He panicked a little and stepped back. "The shadows..." his voice trembled from his lips and left it quivering as he once again examined the shadows that surrounded them both. "...the shadows are always there, always watching, waiting for their chance to eat me." He looked her straight in the eye and for the first time his eyes showed a drop of strength as he spoke, his voice stronger than before. "You are not save either, they will eat anyone who is not prepared!"
Perhaps this was the truth to why those around him didn't seem to fear the shadows like he did -they simply didn't know their power, didn't understand what would happen if they turned a blind eye to them. How foolish they where. But not Scio, they wouldn't get him, he would run and run and run until he was safe of their hold. It was tiring yes, and perhaps it was useless like so many claimed but that would not stop him.
Now finding himself distracted a little he remembered her words. Fruit. He licked his lips as the thought of food hit him like a wave of cold water -he was hungry. Running always made him hungry. "Do you know..." he paused looking the mare up and down again, she was small and strange looking but that didn't mean she was in league with the shadows... did it? He gulped, looked to the ground a little and then finished his sentence. "... where any fruit is?"

Edel listened t him carefully, as he spoke about shadows, and how at any moment they could turn on them. She wondered how he could have come up with something like that, then she remembered something her son had once told her. Because of his training he came across a lot of odd things in his life, and he'd told her about phobias. Could it be that the stallion in front of her had one? How could someone so intimidating be afraid of a simple shadow? Sure, it could get a little creepy at night, and shadows were naturally dark places where, 'evil', things could happen. But, she'd never felt threatened by a shadow, just what could be hiding in them. But, she decided to play along with him for now, so he might feel more comfortable around her.
"Well~ I think you- We're fairly safe from the shadows here, the stars are bright, and so is the moon." She smiled, even though it was night, it was fairly easy to see in the meadow. If the night were any worse, she probably wouldn't be able to see the stallion at all, he was just that dark. His next question caught her off guard. She was starting to think he might have a very jumbled mind, along with his paranoia. However, she did know the answer to this one fairly well.
"Yes, I know were some fruit is. It's not all that far from here..." Not that far, but not exactly in the bright clearing really. Would he be comfortable traveling there? She thought about it for a bit and considered something...
"But I could get you there, safe and sound. The shadows wouldn't harm you with me around. I've been in their murky depths before, and I've managed to escape. They won't think twice about you with me around." She didn't know if he would believe her about that, but she seriously had traveled to some majorly dark places before, that's what her whole life was about really. She never stayed in one place for too long, and she always pushed herself to new limits.
"Oh, I'm Edel by the way." She'd only just realized that she hadn't introduced herself at all. Mostly because she hadn't been that sure the stallion was safe.

Sciophobia looked nervous as she spoke, his eyes moving to spy the shadows from time to time, he was just making sure but what the mare was saying seemed to be right, she was like a shield to the darkness. He liked it. He liked feeling as if the shadows where not going to eat him -but at the same time he felt uneasy, could he really trust her? He trust everything that was happening? To him the fear was real, there was no escaping it yet here was an opportunity he couldn't turn down.
His body however had a different reaction to his mind as it stood before the mare shaking, his head hanging low and if he stared at her any harder he would probably bore a hole straight through her. She was certainly enchanting, and as he spied the stars around her in the background he noted that she looked like a night sky herself -a shadow? He just couldn't shift that thought.
Trying to focus on her words he nodded at her offer, he would see if she was right, if it was turely a trap like he suspected then he would have to be prepared to run as fast as his legs could carry him to a place as far away from her and the forest around them as he could. They wouldn't take him alive so easily. "Thank you," the word shook on the way out once again revealing his fear, he simply couldn't squish it.
"Scio," he hesitated before saying his full name, "My name is Sciophobia."

Score one for a break through! He was still a bit edgy, and even though he stared at her most of the time, he still glanced around a lot. He obviously had a real fear of the shadows, and she'd make sure to protect him from them. Even if they weren't any real threat. She could tell he was nervous of her though, it just occurred to her then how much she resembled the night. She knew, that to normal Soquili, she was a little harsh looking, with her tail, and blindfold. To this stallion? She was probably a walking nightmare. But, it seemed like he'd be willing to trust her for now.
She smiled as sweetly as she could muster, "You're welcome Scio! I promise it's not too far." She nodded, as if confirming her own information and turned around. She made her to keep her tail low and at her side, she didn't want to accidentally hit him or freak him out. She trotted to the edge of their clearing, and glanced around, as if checking to make sure nothing would jump out at her. "We're good going this way for now." She said, and with a twitch of her wings she headed into the forest.
They traveled in silence for a while, and at some point she even caught herself humming. It was a habit of hers, when she was alone she often sung songs to keep herself occupied. "Not much longer." And just then, they same to a nice little setting. Bushes with berries were all around and a few random fruits trees. Just about anything really. Edel came here often, it was part of her usual route, though, it was hardly a secret location or anything. Several Soquili could be found wandering through here during the day.

He hesitated as they approached the forest, the shadows loomed thickly here, clinging to the trees as they mocked him.... surely an agent of darkness would lead him here? Take him to the queen of the shadows -or who ever ruled them- he paused, his body shaking and trembling making him look like he was caught in a storm. His eyes where bright and made him look like a startled cat....
Yet as he surveyed the shadows his eyes fell upon the rump of the mare that was leading him, there was something about her that was interesting, something that was drawing him towards her. It was something he didn't understand. Taking a large intake of breath, closing his eyes to compose himself he stepped into the forest and began to follow her as fast as he could without bumping into her. He only hoped they wouldn't be here for too long.
He hated the darkness.
He hated feeling like everything was out to eat him.
....but that was just his nature.
There was something about the mare and her humming that settled the demon within him, it was a pleasent sound and he could listen to it all night quite easily and so he just listened rather than interupt her. It wasn't until she spoke that he snapped out of his current mindset and remembered where he was. "Ok..." was all the reply he could muster, they where too deep in the forest for his liking now.... the shadows lurked and loomed around him. They where going to eat him, he just knew it. "I'm not ready to die" he mumbled as a mere whisper under his breath as he eyed the darkness around them. He sped up and found himself hugging the side of teh dainty mare as if somehow she would save him from them.

Edel was spooked a bit herself, when all the sudden Sciophobia was right beside her. She regained her composure quickly though, hoping not to spook the stallion. She was finding it hard to believe anyone like him could be so terrified, and what she thought had been a joke in the beginning, she was coming to realize was actually the truth. She nuzzled him for a but of reassurance, and then nodded to the fruits all over the ground and in the trees.
"I promise nothing's gonna eat you as long as I'm around, 'kay?" Edel didn't usually shorten her words much when she spoke. The voice she was using now was used used with foals...or, flirting. She blushed a bit, trying to figure out what was running through her mind. She shook her head, and bent down for a few berries off a bush nearby.
"See~ Yummy!" She smiled, and nodded for him to give it a try. After all, she'd ventured into the shadows without them eating her, certainly they couldn't get to someone as big and tough as him.
