User ImageHidalgo made his way easily over the stream, it's water trickling through the snowy stream bed where his hoof broke through the crust of ice above it. Soon it would be swollen with water, and he would have to make sure he was careful with the muddy waters that would be tearing at the banks. The snow was packed deeply in the distant mountains. More then he had ever seen. Even the plains were still buried in snow, and he had just spent a few days hiding from a blizzard. He could barely open his eyes after that, so crusted with snow had his coat been, and so cold that his breath had frozen the moment it left his muzzle. And it was a safe bet to say, that had been the coldest he had ever been in his life.

Today was clear though, only a slight sheen of cloud so that the snow wasn't that brilliant white that would hurt the eyes. One could stand it like this. And he made his way through the knee-deep snow, looking for sheltered places that he knew the grass hid. Brown dead grass, but grass none the less. And he was feeling hungry after the blizzard. Well, he hadn't eaten a few days before the blizzard, and her certainly didn't eat during the blizzard. It must have been a week since his last sparse meal. but that didn't concern him. This was wintertime, and the plains could be harsh.

He idly mused as he headed for one of his favorite haunts near the edge of the plains, a place of rocky outcroppings and trees. The rocks tended to shelter the grass, and the trees seem to keep the ground warm enough to keep the grass more alive then anywhere else. It was still half dead, but it had a little frozen green mixed in with it. And it wouldn't be too hard to paw to to get. Before that blizzard, the drifts would have been about as high as his shoulder, if not higher still, but the wind had been so fierce it had cut it down to knee-height, and the trees would thin the snow further still. He thought of the grass there, and nearly licked his lips in anticipation of the meal he was soon to get.

The mare stood a shiver dancing lightly across her back, the blizzard had been rather terrifying to encounter. The fierce winds whipping around her the cloaks of snow melting and then freezing still clung in small areas on her body and her stomach! Another rumble escaped sending an echo across her body. She had little to eat not wanting to venture too far in the blinding land of the snow was starting to become unbearable. The noise sounded like a growling creature hunting in the depths of the night and just the thought of such a ravage like beast nestled neatly away waiting to pounce and greet her own growling beast seemed rather a situation she wanted to avoid.

Pawing at the ground Cerys tried to see if the frozen ground below would yield any treats of growth however no luck came to her avail. The dead grass seemed rather dismal and the lack of sniffing out even a small rotten apple core seemed like folly dreams that wouldn’t come true on such a day. A sigh escaped from her lungs as despair seemed to edge her onwards, maybe she could find the icy stream that she was near before the blizzard erupt across the land however she… had no idea where she was. No more so confused after the blizzard was what she should have said, she had no idea where she had come from nor what direction she was heading in when the wind seemed to twirl its icy grip around her sending her in a rather dizzy state and left her there not knowing anything.

This made the mare even more heart sunken than before, lost and hungry she was stuck in the middle of a place that she had little knowledge of. All of the trees, the small snow drifts, even the clouds that now drifted rather hazily in the sky all looked the same to her and the sun was no help hanging in the middle of the sky. She was unfortunate in not being able to watch it rise in the morning after spending half the night awake in fear, blinding snow and the dark were much more frightening than just the regular night sky. What to do? Cerys thought shaking her head watching as the small tuffs of snow fell to the ground and standing around was getting her nowhere. Her brown eyes watched a small red bird fluttered in the sky making his way from one tree to another.
“Well, better than nothing,” the mare replied following after him as her stomach rumbled again.

He continued pushing his way through the snow, feeling his strength starting to give, but still pushing onwards. He knew if he didn't get something to eat soon, his strength would wane further, and he would have a hard time surviving until the snow melted and the grasses emerged gloriously fresh from under the frozen surface of white. Just the thought of the grass made his stomach rumble, and had distracted him just enough that he did not pay attention to where he was going. he made his way right into the middle of a snow-covered valley, and found himself up to his cheeks in show. And that pulled him instantly out of his musings.

He reared on his back legs, kicking at the snow, to try and break a path to the other side of the small valley. The going was slow, and his breath steamed as he continued to rear, pawing at the snow and pulling it out of his way with his sharp hooves. It seemed like an eternity before he finally made his way out of the depression, sweat making his coat gleam as it started to turn into ice. That wasn't good. He could freeze if he let the ice clump on his coat. So Hidalgo set out at a brisk pace, trying to calm his ragged breath and cool off before it killed him. In the process of moving forward though, something caught his eye to the side. A dark figure not quite so distant, stood in stark contrast to the snow around, and it was moving forward, by the trees. What was it? Was it some kind of predator? Hidalgo feverently hoped not. He did not want to deal with a starving set of sharp teeth today if he had to.
