The dragon sat motionless on a large boulder, unmoving. Her eyes were closed and her ears were perked, listening for the slightest of sounds. All lay quiet. She held her breath for a few more seconds. Still nothing. The dragon expelled her held breath in a sigh. She had been made a huntress in the pack that she had joined; the pack so obsessed with bright colors that almost made the dragon retch; and it was an honored position, to be sure, but Muerta had been gone so long from the pack that it almost made her question the pack's trust of her. She... wasn't the most pleasant of company to be around, she had to admit, but even these silly dragons with their obsession with bright colors could not escape the truth that is death. Some found it morbid, but Muerta found death rather comforting... like a blanket that slowly covered you with its warm embrace as your life passes. Perhaps it was this fascination with death that the dragon had that made her such a fearless fighter and huntress.

She was a princess, but that didn't mean she didn't work and didn't work damn hard. That was what it was about, right? Working for the good of the pack? She had a bright pelt and two horns on her snout, she really needed to live up to that. And she needed to live up to her rank and set a proper example for the pack.

The pack. She stopped and dropped the deer she'd been dragging. Why was it so small? It bothered her, especially the shortage of males. Her mother, the Maman, had explained most of the reasons why, but it didn't make Phoebe feel any better. Westfall was a great pack, the greatest! But it was small, and had dark coated females in high positions. Not that they didn't work hard to earn the position, she admitted ruefully.

But still...

Muerta closed her eyes suddenly and listened carefully. She heard another presence, and judging by it's footsteps, it was another dragon with it's prey. She stood, motionless, waiting for the other to appear with one eye open. When the stranger finally came into view, it was certainly not what Muerta expected. It was one of the princesses of the pack, carrying a small deer.
Inwardly, Muerta groaned. The princesses of the Maman had such horrid attitudes, especially on "dark colored" dragons like Muerta. Nevertheless, she was a princess, and the huntress was her subject. Muerta bounded off of the boulder she was perched on and approached the other dragon. "Princess, it is always a pleasure to see you. Are you on the hunt as well?"

Even if it was a small deer, it was still heavy and awkward. The combination of dragging the deer and worrying over the pack's size was enough to distract her entirely from her surroundings. After all, she was pretty deep in the pack boundaries and more than safe.

She jumped when Muerta approached, but recovered quickly. "Hello Muerta," she said, dropping the deer once more. "Yes, I brought down a deer," she said with a small amount of pride. She was still pretty young, after all, and still somewhat new to hunting. She missed as often as she succeeded, and every catch was a victory. Proof that she wasn't just a lazy layabout and could pull down a deer.

She thought quickly, trying to remember the other dragon's rank. Huntress. Perhaps it wasn't so bad that the pack was small after all. "And yourself? Have you had much luck today?" she asked politely.

Muerta didn't show it, but inside she was fuming at herself. This naive princess caught a deer when she herself had caught nothing! It was humiliating. But all is fair, she reminded herself. Outwardly, the huntress reminded herself to stay polite. "It is an excellent catch, princess. The pack will undoubtedly be grateful. I myself have had no such luck... It seems that death is unusually heavy on this part of the wild lands." The dragon knelt down by the deer carcass. "Life... can take life away from other life... for the cause of sustaining life. Such is the way of the world, no?" Muerta stood back up and smiled at the princess.

"Tell me, princess, why have you strayed so far from the pack? Surely you would be more comfortable there than out in the wild with all of this death hanging on the air?" Muerta did not care if the words would sting the princess or not. All that mattered to her at this point in time was finding food for the pack to which she belonged. The princess Phoebe at this point would just be an anchor weighing Muerta down.

Phoebe flinched as Muerta started to talk about death. Right. That was why she avoided her. "I suppose," she said carefully. And when she thought about it, it was true. She was a meat-eater, she killed to live. But it wasn't a pleasant topic or one she particularly enjoyed talking about.

Phoebe didn't quite growl, but she did dig her claws into the earth. Is that the way she thought of her? Just some soft princess, some good for nothing layabout? But that mention of death, again. Perhaps Muerta was just trying to be polite. Perhaps. "I am a princess," she said simply, "not the heir. No heir has been chosen, and until the day someone is selected, my sisters and I live as no more than common members of the pack. All that sets me apart are the horns on my snout and the knowledge my mother drilled in my head. Mostly the knowledge," she added, "the complete history of the pack and what each job entails. But what use is that knowledge if I can't even get my paws dirty? I did not really know how to hunt until I brought down my first deer. That is a knowledge that can not be taught, the taste of hot blood."

Muerta caught the flinch of the princess while she talked about death. She could tell that she hated it. All of the pack disliked the way that she would talk about death and the world. It didn't make any sense. Death is a part of life. Why fear it when it will eventually come to all? This logic resounded in Muerta's head as she regarded Phoebe and the way she dug her claws in the earth. Clearly she was upset.

As Muerta listened to the princess, she gained a small understanding of her thinking process, and it was logically sound. Being a princess did not prevent her from doing the work of her subjects. At the mention of blood, Muerta's ears unconsciously perked slightly. "Forgive me, princess. I did not know. But I can understand how you feel... Knowledge is power, yes, but some things cannot be taught, like you said. The odd sensation one gets when a life is taken before their eyes is something that cannot be explained. It is one of life's and death's mysteries."

Phoebe nodded slightly at Muerta's words, gaining some respect out of the other dragon's admission of not understanding. Admitting getting something wrong - yes, that took guts.

The nod shifted to a flinch at the mention of death. But Muerta was willing to look at things from Phoebe's point of view, why couldn't Phoebe do the same?

She was a princess.

Muerta was a member of her pack.

She had to understand, she had to. She took a deep breath and thought about her first hunt, her first successful hunt. The deer, struggling under her while she choked out its life. The blood, seeping into her mouth. Death, yes that too. "And that sensation is tenfold when you took the life," she said slowly. "But I have never seen a dragon die and do not wish to." She shuddered at the very thought.

Muerta looked at the princess curiously. She seemed to be struggling with comprehending something, but what that something was eluded the huntress. Whatever it was had to have struck a chord in the princess, Muerta reasoned. She chuckled slightly at the princess's next words.

"Yes... That would be true, yes. The rush of the hunt... it is exhilarating. But..." Muerta's eyes grew slightly cloudy. "...To take a life needlessly is a crime against nature. Death comes to all. It is unavoidable. But to take a life that still had the will to live is absolutely unforgivable and shameful. At some point in time, some may have to do it. After all, that deer you killed must have had life still in it." Muerta looked away slightly, her face unreadable. "However, it's life was for other life. We kill to survive, and when we die, we shall be used to survive as well. It is the eternal dance of life and death."

Phoebe looked at Muerta in surprise. How had she overlooked this dragon? It was true that she was a bit... morbid... but when you looked beneath the surface, there was something, something bright and beautiful and thoughtful. She looked down at the deer, and thought about Muerta's words. "It's wrong to kill without reason," she said slowly. "But for food, to live... it is needed. I think I'm starting to understand. This deer died so that we might live, and we should respect that sacrifice." She looked at Muerta hopefully, ever the attentive student.

Muerta smiled at the princess. Her words were true, and in her mind Muerta was actually thrilled that someone was actually listening to her. She had always been cast away from others because of her strange ways, and here was someone, a princess, no less, who was listening and learning from her. It was difficult for the dragon to maintain her composure.

"I think you are starting to understand. Life is beautiful, and so is death. Each is a part of the other, and both should be honored. Without death, there is no life, and without life there is no death. That is the way it always has been. All life should be respected, and if life is taken, it should be rightfully honored in death." Muerta looked up at the sky. Dark clouds were beginning to roll in and a chill wind blew. "For life and death are really one and the same."

"Yes!" Phoebe said, starting to get genuinely excited. "Yes, that's it! They're... they're... connected." She grimaced, but laughed nonetheless. She liked pushing herself and thinking about things in new and different ways. Challenges, thinking games - she missed those. No, this was far better than any dull memorization. She paused and tried to get things straight in her head. "If there was no death... if there was no death, there would still be life but it would like, like a rock. We'd sit there, and we'd exist, but we'd have no reason to fight, to struggle. Because how can you know you're happy if you've never been sad?"

Muerta could not help but chuckle at the eager princess. She seemed so willing to learn and to see new things... It was almost refreshing. Here was someone who genuinely wanted to hear Muerta's logic and her way of thinking, and Muerta just began to ramble on, not knowing when she should stop.

"Yes, yes... You are starting to see. If there was no death, we would have no purpose. Like you said... we would just sit there, unmoving, like a rock. And if there was no life.... It would be the same thing. To keep the eternal dance moving, life must forever be created and taken away, for that is the way of things." Muerta paused to smile at Phoebe. "The Maman knows this. The pack knows it... they just don't... fully understand it themselves. Our pack regards females very highly and just as much disregards males. But there are still males in the pack, helping and serving. Do you know why that is, princess?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 15, 2010 2:07 pm

Phoebe listened eagerly to Muerta, like dry earth during a storm, and carefully considered her question. "The easy answer is that if there were no males, it would be very hard to have children," she said, "but the truth... I suspect the truth is different. Tied to life and death? I suppose if we were all female, and there were no males, it just be... too much of the same. The males provide something different, a contrast to us. And they are rather useful." She smiled shyly, and admitted, "I did rather like having my dad around while I was growing up. He was always very loving towards my sisters and I."

Muerta nodded. "Yes, it would be impossible for life to be reborn without the males. They have their place in the pack right beside the females." After what Phoebe said next, Muerta hesitated. "I... suppose that is true. But we do not exist simply for contrast. It is true that contrast is good in keeping balance, but it runs much deeper than that. Have... Perhaps you have heard of the concept of Yin and Yang?" Muerta leaped onto a large boulder and sat down on it. Her eyes we turned up to the sky and held no emotion.
