He was calling his first pack meeting. His former alpha had done this before, and he had also witnessed Loki - the alpha who had given him this great opportunity - do the same. They each had their own techniques, and he wondered how he would do, his first time around, his first time on his own.

The Twin had butterflies, little colorful flying things that fluttered about in his chest, and caused a coughing fit. Thankfully, this time the coughing came with no blood, and passed quickly. The alpha in training smiled, seeing results finally from his healing over his young years. The shaman was doing him some good despite making him feel guilty over putting the older male out so many times.

But that wasn't his concern right now. His concern truly was how his small following would take this first meeting. It felt crucial that things would go right, even though that had each come to him already, on their own, to express their loyalty to this pack, to him.

Draka, in particular, had spoken with him at length. She was only a pup, but he had already taken notice of her budding intelligence. She reminded him of his beloved sisters, and he occasionally had begun to swat at her playfully, and the pair would tumble and chase each other for hours.

But back to his concern. They were just starting to show up in the clearing he had picked for them. Freed - the one everyone was wary over at this moment in time due to his reputation - had been the first on the spot, waiting for even Samhain himself. They had exchanged greetings, and Sam had felt, and subsequently hidden, his feelings of excitement and surprise when the much bigger and older wolf had slowly flopped to his back, to bare his throat and stomach, showing trust, and allowing Samhain to be dominant.

Now the pair stood together. The outcropping was a bit above sea-level, and in fact looked out over the vast body of water itself. It was easy enough to climb up to, via a connecting tunnel down in the mountainous caves they called home. The thing that had drawn him to it, was that the caves, at several points, opened up to similar outcroppings such as these, but one was definitely too huge for the small pack they were at the moment, and the others were too small to do anything but lounge in the sun one or two wolves at a time.

Yes, this one was perfect for now.

As the sun began to lazily slip down into the water behind them, they could hear Avè, and the two pups she had adopted, making their way up the tunnel to the outcropping.

Soon, he would have to speak to them all. The butterflies continued to flutter violently.

Should I run, should I go? What are the consequences if I... Oh bullocks.

"I don't know what to do." the red and black male whined to himself, aloud this time. There was a pack meeting - no - THE pack meeting, and it was soon. He had a bad reputation as a runaway. Run away from this, flee from that. No, not this time. Freed would make it to this pack meeting, and if he could talk himself into it, he would be the first there.

But did he even remember which of the five outcroppings he was to be at? s**t. He pondered for a moment before running off, exiting the small and cozy, yet high-ceilinged cave he had been allowed to pick for himself to be his own personal den.

"Well, I hope this is it..." the wolf spoke to himself once again, his nose working lazily as he stood in the waning sunlight. It was truly beautiful up here. He could see amazing things, things that you COULD see from the ground, within South Seaside, but from up here on the mountain, those same things seemed infinitely more amazing.

The wind ruffled his fur as he stood, his eyes fixed on the sparkling ocean below him, that seemed to stretch out to infinity and beyond. This body of water was bigger than he would ever be, and the thought was scary to him. It made him feel extremely small and insignificant.

Just as he was turning around, intent on facing the entrance to this staging area for their pack meetings, The Runaway hear a noise. Another wolf was coming up the tunnel, and as his nose was directed towards it, he realized immediately that his alpha was fast approaching.

As the younger wolf emerged through the tunnel's cozy mouth, Freed dippid his head, and slid down to his back, tucking his tail a bit. Though he had always been in the third position in packs he had belonged to, he still couldn't manage to break this omega habit, at least at first.

This alpha seemed to enjoy it, so he persisted, until he was invited to once again rise. The subject of ranks arose in his brain as he stood, a bit off to the side, once again staring out at the open water, and the forest below. His alpha stood merely feet away, doing quite the same, and, Freed fancied, pondering the same sorts of questions that he himself had all the time.

Why didn't I run... he mused suddenly, unable to realize the thought, or where or how it came about so quickly.

Avè was unsure of herself lately. She didn't know why she had taken over the care of these two pups, or whether she was even cut out for it. She felt so young, but at the same time, felt that she had stepped into the paw-prints of one much older and more responsible than herself.

She did know, however, that she had taken quite a little fancy to her new alpha - Samhain. She felt terrible leaving South Seaside, and her mother, especially after the stories she had told of the past. But this wasn't an angry marching-away, and it wasn't an abandonment. Her mother had expressed support at her wanting to be in this new pack.

And it was very nearby. How could any mother deny that.

Various openings in the rock overhead let light stream in, and the shadows on the walls and dusty floors let her know that it was almost time for her new pack's first meeting. She wished to be there early, to make a good impression, and headed off in that direction, calling for the two pups as she went.

Maybe if they hurried, they could beat anyone else, and that would look good for her! The pups finally caught up, all dusted over from playing in various parts of the large den they had been introduced to.

"Come, little ones." she cooed, making sure that they were following her at a pace she approved of. She loved them, though she had yet to find out that they were her own nephew's children. She had heard rumors of a large dark wolf who roamed the pack's borders, but no one had every been able to catch up with him, to ask him why he haunted the area. Loki mused that he may actually be family, by his scent.

Only Loki knew - Avè figured. And that was probably for the best right now.

Finally she was nearing the tunnel she needed, and padded up it, gaining speed. The excitement of being first to the scene died, and the wolf went pale white under her fur as she realized that not only was she not first - she was last.

Well, damn.

Varok felt an uneasiness uncoiling in his belly as he walked behind his sister and their caretaker. Their mother and father had abandoned them, in his memory anyway, and he felt a bitterness that he couldn't shake. He was certain that this... Samhain would do the same. Abandon them to be eaten by those bigger beasts which lurked the forests.

With a tiny, near-inaudible growl, the pup did his best to climb the incline leading up into the waning light. Dusk was encroaching, and as they broke surface, he could see the last bits of sun slipping down between an endless view of water and sky.

His small teeth bared themselves almost involuntarily as he laid eyes on his new alpha, and the large red and black oaf who had followed him here. He stayed hidden, however, behind his caretaker, while he watched in envy as the teen-aged wolf stared on at the alpha with stars in her eyes.

Draka shook the dust from her coat as she proudly followed her caretaker up to the ledges where they would meet together for the first time. Her brother followed closely behind, but she paid him no mind for now - He was in a skulking mood, and she did not approve of that, today.

She was eager to hear the things her new alpha would tell them. The pup-near-teen knew little about ranking structures and assigning dens, but she wanted to learn, she wanted to apply.

Her hope was that she would be appointed Beta. Maybe even Varok would hold the secondary Beta position. The small wolf didn't realize at this point that most of the time, wolves occupying the same position were mates.

She nearly bounded up the dirt incline, and popped into the waning sunlight to see that everyone had already arrived. Just as Avè had been, Draka now felt disappointed and a bit slighted. She had wanted to be there first, her competitive spirit taking over.

As she was so small, the pup figured she could easily butt her way to the front of the small pack, and did so, finding herself standing directly before her new alpha. She smiled, letting her tongue loll out to the side, as the alpha began to great them all.

This was it. They were here now, and there would be no turning back. He took a moment to mull over his thoughts before opening his mouth to speak. The alpha meant to stay straight faced, but as the female of the two pups popped into vision suddenly, a smile grew on his maw.

"Currently," he began, gruffly at first. "we are being granted protection from South Seaside. As we grow into our own, Loki has decided that she will back off, and we will become two separate entities. The only reason for their presence is protection from danger and roaming lones looking to start their own pack by defeating new alphas."

The idea made him shiver a bit, but he kept this motion deep inside, and away from public eyes. Loki had his back if that happened - though, he knew soon he would have to stand on his own four feet.

"Now, firstly. Pack meetings will be held on the full moon." He looked up into the sky, as though inviting the others to see the moon, heavy and pregnant in the sky above them. He had picked this night - exactly one month from the pack meeting in South Seaside which had been held to determine him alpha of this new project.

He transitioned then, speaking of the individual wolf, instead of the pack as a whole. "Ranking will be determined for those of you who have at least reached adolescence." he winced inwardly. He had wanted to only rank those who had become adults, but he was only a teen himself, and as it was currently, Freed was the only adult.

"I have been in the dens underground and have reached a conclusion. Those of you who are only pups now, will abide by this rule when you reach the time to do so." he paused to make sure the others were listening, before naming those. "Draka and Varrok fall under this rule, along with Avè."

"There is a den in the north, too large for any real purpose. This is where the adolescent wolves will make their homes as they grow to maturity." pausing again, he looked around the small group, gaging facial expressions. "I feel this is key for development." he finished, not feeling the need to explain himself, and fluffed himself slightly to make that point.

The next point he had to hit on was one he still felt uneasy about. "Matings, I know it's a long time away, and none of us are mated currently. This is to be a mated pack." he spoke the words pointed and slowly. "Your chosen mate must join your pack, or you must go to join theirs." He couldn't force them, he knew. But those who chose to stay here, would have to live by this rule.

He wasn't happy with a lot of packs he had run across in his short travels with Shiva. The concept of having a mate outside the pack or from another pack entirely was unsettling to him, and trickery abounded in those situations. There was another issue to address now, and he spoke slowly once again.

"To go along with ranking, you may also not mate within this pack outside of your own rank." he swallowed hard, cringing inwardly. He was certain some would not be happy, but these were his wishes.

"Beta will stay with beta, omega with omega. If a Hollow Earth beta brings a mate home to join our pack, he or she will fill the second beta slot, and so forth." The sharpness of his voice drove his point home to the others, he hoped. This was important to him, and he felt, to the success of the pack.

"Now on to ranking." This would be the last point of the meeting, and he would allow them to come to him individually after releasing them, to discuss any concerns. He was certain there would be many, but also knew that setting up would be a messy affair.

"Freed, Gamma." he barked, standing finally, and allowing his tail to flag high in dominance. He motioned for the wolf to step aside from the group before continuing.

"Avè, Omega." once more he barked, and flinched inwardly at seeing the quiet complacency in her eyes. She moved aside, towards Freed's direction, without having to be told.

"The others are too young to rank for now, and will spend their time with Avè, as has been the norm. As they grow, they will move to the Adolescent Den."

"Avè, you are my lead Omega, and caretaker to the pack. You will teach incoming omegas their jobs, take care to keep them in line, and..." he smiled just slightly, "You will care for pups - all of them at first, but as more omegas filter in and become trustworthy, you alone will be trusted with the pups littered by your alpha and his betas." he nodded at her, and noticed that she seemed to be more dutiful of her new appointment.

With that last statement, he released the group, surprised slightly when they filtered out, in reverse order that they had arrived.

Freed stood attentively at his alpha's side, and a low rumble of appreciation let Sam know that he had made the correct choice. As Avè left, she thanked the alpha, with a small smirk of glee. He knew she would be a trusted member.

The butterflies dissipated finally, as he watched the remaining pups who had begun to play and fight with each other.

This was only the second pack meeting Samhain had resided over, but he felt that it was already getting easier. He sat comfortably in the same spot he had sat two months ago, and waited for the others to arrive. This time, the male alpha was not alone.

His chosen mate to be, Draka, sat next to him. No one knew yet, as they had decided to keep it hidden until this pack meeting was to take place. He watched her, longing to lean over and hip her ear lovingly. He was nearly an adult, himself, and could see that she was growing fast as well. It was all very exciting to the male.

He scooted closer to her as he began to hear the sounds of wolves approaching through the tunnel. Freed and Ave, followed by the new puppies, Sol and Pol. He did not scent Varok, the brother of his intended mate, and felt irritated. It was his Beta's place to be on time, even ahead of anyone else.

*****

Draka smiled as she looked over at Samhain. To think, last pack meeting had caught her fantasizing about possibly being Beta to this male, and now she was to be alpha if they would have her. Excitement buzzed through her veins, and she could hardly hold her composure as the others approached.

Freed surfaced first, as he had last time, followed by Ave, but this time the pups who followed her were not herself and her brother Varok, but their great-cousins. The circumstances surrounding their introduction to the pack were a mystery to everyone, but she didn't mind having two more strong additions to Hollow Earth.

Second pack meeting. I can do this!

The wolf was huge - bigger than his alpha, or his beta. Free still hadn't run away, even though being given responsibility of his own in the pack. He was gamma, and that was enough for him. He was still uncertain as to his actual role, but realized that as time went on, he would be fine if he just stuck to it, if he only denied his name.

The red and black male approached the pack outcropping once again, this time more confident. By the scents ahead of him, he was reassured that he wasn't the first or even second to arrive this time, and it settled his stomach a bit.

A small smirk crossed the Gamma's maw as he saw and realized the pair of wolves who sat waiting for the rest of the pack. He knew that look anywhere, and knew that they soon would not only have one alpha in their little pack.

Dipping his head respectively, the Gamma made his way to his place in the circle of rocks, and sat comfortably to wait for the others.

Ave felt bloody strange about everything. The last pack meeting had seen her with two pups not of her own body, and they had now grown. Now she was lazily making her way to the second recorded meeting of her pack... with two more pups in tow - STILL not her own.

These two, Pol and Sol, were strange, and all anyone knew of their sudden arrival in the pack was half-truths and hushed whispers. It was certain that the pair didn't belong to any mated couple within Hollow Earth, and due to the very distinctive markings on each pup, Ave thought she knew exactly who the pups biologically belonged to; as much as the ordeal was hush, hush, Ave kept her maw shut, and kept good care of the pups.

"We're going to meet your alpha," she looked over them, pausing to wash her tongue over Pol's ear, smoothing the fur and clearing it of the dust that had settled there. "He is very mighty, and gracious. As you grow and learn you will be given rank within the pack, more responsibility. But for now, your job is to play and grow strong." She smiled a bit as the flat earth they walked on began to rise; they were now on the pathway to the outcropping, and would break from dark earth into twilight within the next few seconds.

It was Pol's main directive to play harder than any pup had ever played. He pounced his beloved sister, and didn't place much stock in the more important goings-on of the adults. He knew who his parents were, and knew that there was trouble between them, yet the little pup refused to let anything get him down. He had recently met his two favorite family members besides Sol - his uncle Halcyon, and his much-older-brother Jono.

He felt that those two were the ones to watch and follow in their pawsteps. He was unsure of how he had come to be in this pack, and not in his family pack, but didn't let that worry him too much either. He was certain that his new alpha was a good leader, and wouldn't mind Pol wandering if it came to that, to find and congregate with blood relations.

The pup smiled as his thoughts were interrupted. Ave, his caretaker, had been speaking, and now she had saved her breathe a bit in order to clean the dust off him. He had got that dirt honestly, rumbling and tousling with Sol!

User Image

Sol padded along quietly, also lost in her own thoughts. It was natural for her to keep within her own mind, and she often had to make a straight effort to pay attention to what her Omega was saying to the pair.

Most often she thought of family, and wondered about the separate packs on the same marked land. She wondered about the goings-on just under the surface of familiar faces and ritual meetings - like this one, her and Pol's first pack meeting in this pack.

She knew how they had come to be here, but Mother had only shushed them as she carried them across the river to leave in the darkness of these caves. Sol hadn't been happy; her adoration of the sun kept her wanting constantly to play outside. She knew Pol was no different, he loved the moon and stars.

The thing no one knew was that the pups felt more in tune with each other at the first sparks of day, when the sun has all but sunk into the ocean, and stars are punching their way through the dark mask of night.

Suddenly, the pup bumped into her brother, and giggled a bit. He was being groomed against his will. Sol realized that they were heading up now, and hoped that they would end up sitting through that magical dusky few moments outside. She shot Pol a wickedly curious glance, and the pair nodded, rushing ahead of Ave to make it outside as fast as their paws could take them.

Varok was pissed. He wasn't fitting into his Beta role very easily. His job was not... whatever his damn alpha had told him it was, which he had, coincidentally forgotten. His job was to find his god-forsaken sister and run away with her. Kill that idiot of an alpha, take his sister as his own...

He was salivating now as thoughts of murder ran through his head. Killing that silly omega - she had wanted to mate with the alpha but was just too idiotically weak. He cursed her audibly as he paced his den. Those new damn pups, where had they COME from? Realization didn't hit him that before these pups were himself and Draka...

He would have trouble with Freed if the brute decided to actually stand up for himself. Freed was easily twice Varok's size, and was the only wolf here to give Varok a sense of weakness. One that he never showed, but one nonetheless.

That idiot Samhain had done him a huge favor in his quest by making him Beta. Everyone listened to him, and if he didn't want to kill certain wolves, he could maybe just order them to leave. Easy.

Varok rolled his eyes, a painful jerking motion that made his head hurt, as he remembered the pack meeting. Apparently there was to be an important announcement, and some explaining about the new set of pups. Oh joy, he just couldn't wait.

Stiffly he exited his den, a privileged location right beside the alpha's own den. As he passed by on the way to the meeting, he smiled jaggedly, planning out his next few nights - his overthrowing of this weak unworthy alpha, Draka at his side as HIS rightful mate.... a purging of all unworthy wolves. He and Draka would mate and rebuild the population strong.

He shuddered violently with pleasure as he made his way up the ramp, taking a moment to hide his arousal before coming into view of the others.

"Come on" he added sincerely a moment later, "I would love to have you at my pack meeting. No strings."

She smiled as she remembered the once-puppy, prancing in front of her now as an adult, and bigger than herself, she might add. Samhain had grown wonderfully despite being sick, and she liked to think she had had a paw in the salmon bucket in keeping him well.

It was true, she was in the area and had yet to check out this magnificent pack he had told her about in his meeting. He had also mentioned a very important pack announcement to be revealed that night. She was excited, upon seeing whispers of his new mate flit about inside his mind. She agreed to be there.

Finding the northern cave entrance was a bit harder than she expected. Whatever little Sam had his pack doing, they were using their time well. She had had to use her sense of smell as well as mind scenes from the previous wolves gone through to find her way. Once she did, the path was straightforward, a tunnel leading into main chambers. It was delightfully earthy, and Shiva sensed pleasantly fat bullfrogs hidden loosely in the walls around her.

Smiling, she took the directions he had given, and felt herself gently rising as she yielded right a bit to take the final path. Moments later, her soft brown head broke from darkness to twilight, and she laid eyes on the entire pack, sitting in wait for the show to start.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 05, 2010 10:27 am

As wolves entered the outcropping, Sam watched and counted. He nodded gently as the new pups, Sol and Pol, watched him with wide eyes. He was the only wolf who truly knew what was going on with the pair, and how they had come to be in the pack. He would reveal that soon enough, or let the pups themselves do so as they grew and made a place for themselves within the pack.

He noted that things seemed off with his beta, and made a mental note to speak with him privately after this pack meeting. It was important, but the meeting was being held for a more important reason - unveiling to everyone that they now had their queen.

The last of the wolves in Sam's pack had filtered up, with Varok being last, but Sam still waited. He realized wolves were getting antsy, but he only met their questioning stares with a nod. Suddenly he saw what he was waiting for, first the pink flower, followed by the sandy-spotted head, colors dulled by slight age. He waited for Shiva to find a resting place before speaking.

*****

Draka, too, watched as pack members arrived on scene. It was interesting seeing this happen from Samhain's position, sitting beside him and counting them as they came. She wasn't completely sure he counted them, as there weren't many, and everyone knew everyone else's face.

But when everyone had shown themselves, lastly being her forever disgruntled brother, Sam still hadn't begun to speak. She wondered what he waited for, pausing in her elation over the news that they would spread.

One last wolf made her way to their meeting. One that Draka did not recognize, but dipped her head in acknowledgement either way.

*****

It was time. Everyone was seated or standing in the place they seemed comfortable in. This was not to be a long pack meeting, but a ceremony for a union. Samhain had wished to invite his family, but in the short time he had, realized that it would be much more fun to take Draka to the pack where they had been born and grown up.

The big alpha stood, and waited as Draka stood also beside him. "It was difficult enough for us to wait until proper time for a pack meeting to call you all here." he smiled at Draka, canting his head towards her as he spoke the word 'us'. It was delightful, and he held the position a moment before turning his attention back to the pack as a whole.

"The pack has been doing very well, everyone is doing their job and things are going as they should. The reason for this meeting is to announce that you now have two alphas, as was always intended. I expect you all to treat Draka with the respect you treat myself, no questions asked."

He hoped to gain their feedback. She must be accepted by the pack, and he wouldn't force them, though he loved her, he knew he could not mate outside of his rank. He could never ask a pack to adhere to a rule that he himself had no intention of following.
