Bookstores.
To some people, they might be unavoidable evils, the person walking in the door sent there by a teacher. Some project, perhaps? Or to others they entered the door with a single focus: the latest inane comic book. Some people, perhaps, had intellectual pursuits, and searched the shelves for more appropriate stimuli. Others only went for the Quick Notes.
Jada Chamberlyn went to bookstores because she loved them. She loved the ambiance, she loved the smell. She loved to sit in the aisle, coffee on the arm of the cushy chair provided, flipping through page after page of anything. History, Geography, Biographies. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Ancient Religions. She could not count the number of times she had read through the Divine Comedy, or sat hiding her grin like a child as she re-read the Goosebumps series.
Today, however... she was not sitting, nor was she grinning like a child. Jada was 17, single, and had yet to have cornered some pitiful lad in the corner and gotten her first kiss. Not to say that she'd never been on a date, certainly not; but when a young woman is of a certain standing and breeding, she cannot simply give into hormonal passions like a commoner. Which is the natural explanation for why she was standing near a shelf, beet red, hiding her book so no one could see. The Kama Sutra, of all things!
Her mother would birth a bovine and her father would have a heart attack if they had even the faintest clue of the book she was so eagerly looking over. Well-bred women do not read sex novels! She could almost hear her mother's voice in her ear. They read Harlequins. Discreetly, and snitched from the well-paid and very discreet maid. So long as no one caught her, she would be fine.
Her black hair was free, being used to hide her face from any passerby, and she was nowhere near the section of the bookstore where the Kama Sutra would normally be found. No, indeed; she was standing in front of the foreign language aids. Her brown leather purse was tapping against her leg, the strap making the bottom of her skirt sway. She shifted her weight uncomfortably, eyes wide as she turned the page, letting out a breath slowly.
Oh.
Dear. Was that... possible?

For ditching his foreign studies class for three days in a row Cassius had promised his teacher he'd do an extra book report. When he left his teacher's office all he kept thinking was what the hell. Apparently he was back in the fifth grade or something. He guessed that he needed to find a cool civilization to write about. He supposed as a joke he'd find some tropical place and suggest his teacher travel there. She looked like she needed a break and a tan. Maybe then she'd look smoking hot. Cassius was always trying to better the lives of other people.
He made his way to the biggest bookstore in town. He was not surprised to find it somewhat empty. Who the hell came to this place, anyways? This was like the third of fourth time he had actually been here. He couldn't remember why he had gone there before. He was getting tired thinking about it already.
He was looking for the 'foreign' area sign and stumbled around for many minutes, running into shelves left and right and failing in general. All of these sections looked the same. And of course, finally, he saw a 'foreign' on the shelf and disregarded the language part. What he found next was most appealing and shocking. Cassius was positioned behind a lovely looking girl, and she somehow hadn't noticed him yet. What was she doing? Studying french or something? She looked like she could speak french for some reason.
He was going to walk away and continue his quest towards his book report but the novel the girl was holding caught his eye. Oh my. He'd seen that book before. There was NO doubt about it. Cassius crept closer, noticing that the girl was very into her 'story'. She was staring at quite the page and hopefully learning SO much at the same time. Was she curious? It seemed like it.
"That's my favorite position." he finally said, while taking a step back so that the girl wouldn't have a heart attack. But either way, he was expecting her to freak out in general at his ninja-skills. "You should check out some of the positions in the back of the book- they always keep the challenging ones there. They are a good test to how flexible you are and could be." And of course, a flawless and charming smile followed his vulgar and impolite words. Shame didn't exist in his world. Just his awesome voice of reason.

She'd known someone was on the aisle, but with the way that she was positioned, she hadn't worried about someone trying to look over her shoulder. So when a warm, masculine voice came from behind her, suddenly-nerveless fingers dropped her book. She visibly flinched as it fell open to one of the pages she hadn't gotten to yet, face flaming red.
One small foot flipped the cover back closed, and she kicked the book underneath of the shelf just enough that it would not be able to be read; not enough she wouldn't be able to fetch it back to put it away. It took her maybe ten seconds to do those things, but she had not fully composed herself when she turned to the stranger behind her. While the expression was aloof, the flush to her pale skin gave away her embarrassment. "What book?" her voice was tight, and the red crept up some more from her cheeks, crossing the bridge of her nose.
She couldn't believe this. She'd been caught. And not caught by someone she could just ignore either; she just had to be caught by someone close enough to her own age to be downright embarrassing. Who apparently had already read the Kama Sutra. Or experienced it. Or both.

Cassius crossed his arms and shook his head with a smile. Was this girl serious? What was it with girls and being so embarrassed about sex? Did he need to go into a full explanation about how good it was for the female to experience it and how much healthier she'd probably feel and be all the same? Naw. That was boring and made him no better than his (hopefully skanky) professor. He'd rather toy with her and enjoy her complete and utter shock she was feeling. He had no idea why she was so embarrassed- but he'd most definitely find out.
"Oh yes, that 'what book' trick. Unless you were reading how to pronounce those positions in different languages, I'm not buying it." He followed up with a chuckle and glided his fingers through his hair. "If it makes you feel any better, I'm not judging? I think it's good for a female to indulge in the pleasures of life." But clearly... she hadn't. What a pity. How did females do that? Waiting for their prince charmings and everything? It was one of those mystery ordeals that Cassius could never solve for himself. So he just pitied all those lonely females that he could be tending to.
"You know, they have sex shops you can go in to where everyone else is reading the same thing. So at least there is less of a chance of feeling embarrassed?" He was trying to make her feel better, and yet, probably making her go insane at the same time. Well whatever. HE was enjoying himself at this very moment, even if she wanted to roll over and die for awhile. Either way, she looked pretty cute embarrassed, so he preferred to keep her face red for a little while longer.

She gave him a scowl as he smiled at her. Deliberately, Jada bent down and lifted the book back up from where she had kicked it, brushing the dust off of the cover. "Well, I thank you for your kindness in not judging my reading material, however I must inquire as to why you felt the need to disrupt me in the first place?" She did indulge in plenty of feminine pleasures. Like shopping, and shoes, and nightclothes, and chocolate.
Especially chocolate.
By now she was recovering her aplomb. Until he mentioned a sex shop, and her entire face blazed from brow to chin, her nostrils giving a slight flare. Who did this blonde... rugrat! think she was? She tilted her chin at him, her slight scowl turning into a frown for just a moment before she smoothed her expression. "I've no desire to go to such a store." she informed him shortly. "Though again, I'll thank you for your advice." And thank you to stop giving it. Really, she thought her face was going to turn to ash and slide right off!

"I always disrupt people because it's my right and I enjoy it. I also have this never-ending problem where I seem to disrupt pretty girls especially. Can you imagine? I think I need therapy for it or something." He winked at her gently and watched her now forming pouty expression. Was it something he said? He was doing a good job at keeping her face red. But now she looked like she was in pain! "Come on, no need to be stressed. It's just sex. Say the word with me: Seeeex. So not a big deal, right? My sex is male, and yours is female." Hopefully. There was always a hopefully involved in his mind.
He could never be too sure with any of these characters he'd met these days. He was taking a good guess with her judging from what he observed this entire time. But anyways, back to the pretty-embarrassed-girl in front of him. "So is it too weird for me to introduce myself?" Haha, even saying that felt hilarious.
"Well I'm Cassius James. And I really didn't mean to ruin your endeavors with that book. I'm just as curious as you are about certain things, and when I saw you standing here I had to inquire about a personal favorite of my own." he paused suddenly and sighed. "There is nothing wrong with reading anything for that matter." He was trying to be sensitive. And as far as he could tell, he was doing a damn good job. Who knew if she bought it though.

"I'm sure it isn't your habit of being disruptive that you need therapy for." Jada informed Cassius dryly. "Though at least I know your eyes are working." she gave him a coy look from under her lashes. Really, she couldn't resist. He might be classless, but at least he knew when he was dealing with an attractive young woman. It fed her ego, though the blush remained. She wasn't accustomed to such bold attentions.
She probably should have been by now, but so few people approached her so boldly. Maybe it was something in the way she held herself? "I suppose I could permit you to begin the introduction." she agreed, and waited for his name. Cassius James. How interesting. "A pleasure, Mr. James. I am Jada Chamberlyn." she extended one slim hand confidently. The back of it was tinged pink from her previous blushing. Mr. Cassius James was charming. Too charming. She wasn't sure she'd trust him as far as she could throw him, but it certainly would not be a poor way to spend the afternoon. For all that he was terrorizing her delicate sensibilities, it would certainly be an education to spend some time with him.
"You didn't really ruin anything." she kept her tone conversational. "Truth be told, this is the first time I've been so daring as to... take a look at this particular book. Was there something you wanted to look at? This was the only copy of this particular edition."

Miss Jada was starting to warm up to him, and he could tell. He gently reached out and shook her hand before letting go of it altogether. He couldn't recall how many times he'd held a girls hand for too long, and how many slaps resulted from it. So now he was more careful and had learned from many sore faces. "It's a pleasure, Jada."
He was somewhat surprised to hear her open up to him. His was actually thrilled that she was being truthful about the situation in front of them. He was so used to everybody sugar coating everything- but this was a nice change of pace. "Was there a particular reason you sought out this book for today? Maybe a new boyfriend you are trying to impress or a hidden eternal desire that you've been so secretly hiding?" Before she could respond he quickly added, "Its good to be daring and test yourself once in awhile. It shows your mind is ready for any kind of challenge." Perhaps it was her destiny to deal with him for the day since he was most definitely a challenge. Jada seemed to be handling herself just fine nonetheless.
"Oh and I'm good, I don't need it. If I look at that thing any more I'll probably expand on some really weird ideas. I have no need for that." he spoke honestly at that point before glancing at her bright eyes once again. "I have to admit, it was smart of you to come and stand over here. I honestly thought you were studying a language. You could pull this off again if you wanted." Of course he'd say that.

"Curiosity, Mr. James. why else would someone seek out a book of knowledge?" Jada was pleased that Cassius had taken her hand, and also hadn't done anything that could have potentially gotten him shut down. Maybe that was the other reason she couldn't... Ah well. Singles Awareness Day for her, unless her mother had her arranged in some other blind date with some other well-bred young man for the 14th. She didn't respond to his inquiry about her boyfriend, and her desires were none of his business.
She'd been thinking about her single status in between more terrifying thoughts for days. Meeting a stranger- any stranger- who could take her mind away from the heavier things in life would make her happy.
The young woman couldn't stop her chuckle at his comment about weird ideas. But she didn't speak, instead ducking her head in a gesture that clearly said she was holding her tongue. As for his comments on her plan to not be caught reading this particular book, she would let that slide as well. "So you think I should be daring?" she followed that comment instead. "Any suggestions, then, on what I should do to liven up?" She tucked the book under her wrist, pinning it next to her hip and gestured in a clear invitation for him to walk with her. Jada needed to return the Kama Sutra to its proper place. Possibly she'd pick up that book on martial arts she'd seen? "And tell me, what brought you over to this particular section?"

Cassius casually walked besides Jada and enjoyed the way she took charge with the situation. Most girls were afraid to do something like that- so it was commendable to him. "Well, I don't think you need to be more daring. I just think it's good to test your limits once in awhile, even if you aren't comfortable with the situation." He shrugged lightly after he spoke and found it somewhat adorable that she wanted advice from him or something. Since when did he become the expert of doing crazy things?
Oh wait. He always was that guy. And chose to be.
"You should always be living it up. That's what life is all about." Jada obviously needed to do that anyways, since she was hanging out at a bookstore for goodness sakes. "I don't know, go to a club or something. Punch someone in the face. Bungee jump off a cliff." Ok, that was a start. But hey, she asked for his advice and he'd certainly give it as best as he could.
"Yeah I am supposed to be looking for a book report topic so I was searching for foreign places books. But I honestly could care less about doing that right now." Company and entertainment always got priority over his studies, obviously. Plus he was enjoying himself at the moment so he would deal with his homework later.

It was interesting how he spoke of testing her limits. "And how, Mr. James, am I to learn my limits if they've never been tested before?" Jada gave him a playful look from under her lashes even as she smiled. Her cheeks were still pink, and the color refreshed itself now at her playful attempt at flirting. Well, in her own defense he was attractive enough. And with the way he spoke, she somehow got the impression he'd not take it as fishing for a date so much as the play it was meant.
So this would be an opportunity. "I might be able to do the club portion," she agreed. "I've been out before. As for punching someone, I've never done that. I've debated bungee jumping. The closest I've come is jumping off a horse." which had been stupid, but better that than get rolled on. There was a story there, one that she wasn't inclined to immediately share.
"Book report topic..." she chewed on her lip, thoughtful. "How long a report?" Cassius might not be interested in doing his book report, but Jada had just been tossed a very intriguing bone. "And what sort of things would interest you enough to write a report on them?" She turned down the aisle she'd picked up the book on, face flaring at the semi-pornographic content on the cover of nearby novels. Perhaps, based on his previous comments, she should not have asked the question at the time she did.

Smart cookie Jada was at it again. Cassius chuckled as she spoke and even corrected him, but he was now focused on one particular thing Jada said. It would come as no surprise what came out of his dirty mouth next. "Ahhh, so you like to ride things. That's hot. Now I feel like I know you better." Any girl that rode horses knew what was up. Even if they wanted to hide all of the sub-context that came with riding such 'beasts'. She must have had strong legs then.
"Well I'm glad to hear you'll be attending some dance clubs in the future. I'll make sure to make an appearance and check on your homework." As for bungee jumping, he wasn't sure if he believed her but hey, if she tried it that'd be a good correction for him to make. Girls looked adorable when they were scared in any situation.
When she asked about his book report he sighed lightly and saw the cute dork in her appear from her expression. "Uh, well." he paused, knowing she'd LOVE his answer. "I never go to this one class of mine so my teacher wants me to write a report about a foreign place of my choosing. I'm thinking of choosing a tropical place because my teacher needs a serious incentive for a vacation. I think it will make her look better and get in a better mood overall." Killing two birds with one stone?

Jada actually dropped the Kama Sutra again as he described her Equestrian activities as hot. She was not so naive as to not understand what was meant by that comment. She gave him another delicate scowl to advice Cassius that he had displeased her before bending over to lift the book from the ground. She heard a noise from an older woman on the isle (had Jada flashed the lacy top of her thigh-highs?) and straightened up quickly. As she straightened back up, she brushed her hands over the blue and white plaid of her skirt to readjust it.
"You may be coming to dance clubs so I can check your homework." she said dryly as he admitted the fact he didn't tend to attend classes. "A tropical location, hmm?" and one that would inspire someone to want to take a vacation? "Well," she made a soft thoughtful noise as she set the book back on the shelf where she had taken it from, "If you are looking for a vacation area you'll want something... hmm. What about Tahiti? Or Curacao, though in my opinion Tahiti and the Seychelles have a much higher cosmetic appeal."
She took his arm now, unless he pulled away from her gentle touch, and guided him back towards the area they had just come from, her hand light on him. "Make sure you set an extra focus on the economy." And maybe include a plane ticket for her. Though that may have been a trick only Jada would pull.

Cassius was not complaining the least bit when Jada grabbed his arm. He was once again reminded at how soft and delicate her skin was. He followed her movement and realized she was dragging him into his homework. Eeeeeew. But whatever, she was helping him though and giving him some good advice! "I've heard of Tahiti, maybe I'll just go with that." Speaking of warm places, how nice would that be if he and Jada were on the beach right now? He just loved the beach.
Such a thought was too good to be true since Cassius absolutely hated the cold. He was so ready for summer or a vacation. Although, every day of his life seemed to be a vacation. His focuses were so screwed up it seemed.
"You may not believe me, but I get excellent grades when I do attend class. That's why I got into Sovereign Heights in the first place." Although, his real reason for continuing school was to waste his father's money, since that was always so much fun. "Just because I do things differently doesn't mean I won't do my homework." He winked at her quickly before grabbing a big ol' book on Tahiti. "I do appreciate your help, though."
He suddenly paused and realized she was still holding his arm. "Since you've helped me find this book, is there anything I can help you with?" Although it might have seemed like he had bad intentions with his question, for once he was genuinely asking her with chivalry. He enjoyed helping pretty girls.

Jada was soft, and small. However, she was neither paying enough attention nor experienced enough to realize she may have been able to play on those facts. "Tahiti would be a good choice. The visual impact of the pictures you could slip in with your report will be considerable." she assured him, patting him gently on the arm. "And I'm sure you do get good grades. You seem like an intelligent young man." Even if he did make poor decisions in not attending his lessons.
Sovereign Heights? "Oh, you go to the college preparatory school!" Lucky dog! It was co-ed. "I was thinking about temporarily continuing my education there after I graduated Crystal." she looked up at him through her lashes as he looked down at her, asking if he could help her in any way. "Well, if you mean that..." she chewed on her lip for a moment. "Perhaps you would join me for some coffee in the cafe, and you can tell me about Sovereign Heights? I've heard about it, and have pamphlets, but I would like the opinion of an actual student from there."
