Dimarzio has just made a new publicly available pickup for Joe Satriani. I just happened to order my EVO 2 only 3 days ago.. and now I see this. Who knew? Well, I can only hope that this pickup will be going in the next guitar I own.

Discuss whether pickups really make a difference to you and what you consider to be a good sounding PU (no brands, just describe what's in the sound of a good pickup)

I like a pickup that wil give me a nice snap, with good heft in the bass and mids, but still have a bit of mid-high twang and chime. So far I've found the pickup I put into my Tele to give me most of this. Its humbucking so the output is fairly high, and it gives a great defined low-end, but the single-coil size and the angle give it that classic tele twang, with a nice snap and pop when used with a clean setup.

I would change the pickups in my guitar, but i've had to spend money on slightly more noticable things, as in a new amp, and pedals. cry

How do you do it?! How can you just perfectly describe such a thing?! scream

As pertains to pickups, ragingly high output is not necessarily related to tone. I've been really impressed with DiMarzios before.

Replacing a pickup on a classic guitar such as a Gibson or Fender should be done carefully and judiciously. Remember, modifying a guitar may enhance the playability/tone, but it will decrease collector value.

I'm thinking about replacing the pickups in the Jazzmaster, but I'd only do it with the Seymour Duncan replacement pickups which retain the size and shape.

Maybe a DiMarzio "Chopper" installed between them, with a two-way switch so I can turn it on regardless of the other pickup settings... now that's some hot s**t.

I dont think changing the pickups on a really good guitar ( like yours) is neccesary unless you arent satisfied with the tone, another thing, even though collector's value and all the shiz is important ( I would never tinker with a vintage guitar myself) I feel that guitars are made to be played, if new pick ups enhance your playing expirience and you're willing to make the sacrifice then go ahead

I personally will change my guitar's pickups, why? they're cheap stock pickups thats why...but I cant right or for a long time, why? Im 15 saving up for a les paul ( an epiphone) and broke

The pickups in my guitar are in fact microphonic, and that's basically the reason for the change. besides, the guitar isn't really a collectors guitar or anything like that. If it were say, a JS2000 or a Jem, I wouldn't touch it. EVAR... eek

Microphonic means that they very susceptible to feedback. Hylian, wouldn't it be so much easier and cheaper just to have them wax potted?

Probably, but I did find the sound to be a bit.... bad.... I guess I was looking to make it into something more than it was, which I'm doing. I've got my Ibanez which will be for some metal/progressive/fusion type sounds or solos, and I'll have my Epi LP which I plan to use as a rythm/classic rock/fusion type guitar. It's coming slowly.

Oh, that's fair then. I would love to buy a shred guitar and slap some DiMarzio's in it, but ti's quite hard to find DiMarzio's here in the UK. cry

For me, guitars are to be played, not collected for any vintage value. I'm not interested in vintage guitars anyway .. if I think I need to replace a pickup or two, I'll do it if I need to. But it's nice to have a range of guitars with different sounds, not trying to make every single guitar you have humbucking.
