The first thing Lin thought when she felt the marble floor beneath her and saw the soft glow of the runes above was that she wanted a shower. Not a bath, a shower. She wasn't dirty (not after staying a night in the Southland), but her hair was longer, a few tiny braids here and there and her clothes looked like she had been trekking in Goddesses knows where.
Which she had been.
"Good to be home," Lin smiled, "At least for a small while. How long do you think we have until we need to head back in?"
She turned around to see the others who had come with her, her family. Shiro, Ura, Kaito, Storm and Starr.

The five Aldrich Winters were all feeling much the same as Lin, and all looked just as wild. Even Shiro's hair, usually at least a semblance of neat, was brushing against his shoulders.
"By my calculations," he mused, "not that it's going to be perfectly accurate, the way things have been going ... three days, maybe? Aurin is in a bit of a hurry to see Aerin, and with Rhea being anxious to see her family again ... I don't think you should wait too terribly long. They promised not to leave without you after all."
Storm and Starr didn't wait for the others, but immediately broke into a run, hurrying to return home to see their parents.

Lin motioned for the two to follow her so they could talk on the way. Even though she knew Shiro, Kaito and Ura lived in the clan library. Still she would like to be on her way, maybe she would depart from them once she reached her room.
"Of course," Lin nodded, "I think three days should be more than enough, but like you said it's so random it's hard to tell. I'm almost afraid to be gone a day now."
Which made her wonder what day it was now.

"And speaking of which," Shiro added, hefting his bags on his shoulders and starting after Lin, "we should speak to obaa-san and ojii-san about putting a calendar up in here. A daily calendar so that we can know exactly what day it is when we get back. And what month. And what year."
He grimaced slightly. "Who knows how long we've been gone?"
For them it had been nearly five years. It had been fun, but who knew what time of year it even was now?
Kaito, the most feral of the nekos, sniffed at the air. "Smells like winter," he shrugged. "Air's drier than usual, and I can smell a bit of wood smoke from the main fireplace."

Lin tried to think for a moment they had left, it had been a long while and she couldn't quite recall when they had left.
"Well at least that cuts it down to a series of months," Lin ventured.
She was about to say more when her father appeared out from one of the rooms, holding a squirming baby from the looks of it. Lin stared at her father, not because it had been a long while since he had seen her, or the fact he was holding a squirming child and a diaper at the same time, but rather he looked at her as if he was studying something. As if he was expecting something. As if....
"You're home," Donovan replied a bit deadpanned, "Good, could you please deal with that stork that keeps tapping on your window before I shoot it?"
"My window?"
"Yes, your window," he replied, "We tried letting it in but it kept flying away for the past three days. I'm not going to ask what you got yourself into this time."
He hefted the baby, whom she now saw by the bracelet it was Faith before kicking the door open to the other room. Muttering all the while about weird family quirks. Just when she thought he had left he poked his head out the door again.
"Oh," he grinned wolfishly, "Welcome home."
Then he disappeared leaving Lin a bit bewildered.
"Why do I feel like someone just walked over my grave?"

Shiro and Kaito were about to greet Donovan when he quipped about the stork at Lin's window, and then they stared at each other, shocked.
At Lin's question, Shiro was the first to shake off the shock. "Possibly because you seem to have acquired a baby while we've been gone for five years?" he replied.
"This I have to see!" Kaito grinned, breaking into a run. "Race you there!"

Seconds by nature cannot get pregnant (as far as anyone knows), however it seems that Seconds were not immune to the laws of Gaia. In which to say yes, storks do bring babies and somewhere in the world babies probably do come from cabbages.
Actually when she thought about it, she had two siblings born from cabbages.
"Kaito get back here!" Lin chased after him.
She didn't see this as a good thing, she was only ten for Goddesses sake she couldn't have a kid. She didn't know the first thing about looking after a kid. Somehow images of little winged bundles of joy danced through her head as she chased him.

Kaito laughed and kept right on running. "No way!" he cried gleefully. "Come on, hurry up, slowpoke!"
He had more energy than usual: despite being exhausted from the trip back, he was hyper from the excitement of being home again.
Shiro sighed. "Well, I'm going to go see Kaa-san and Tou-san first, I'll come by your room later and see what's going on."
"I'm with Shiro," Ura said expressionlessly. "Kaito will make enough commotion for the three of us."
"See you later, Lin," Shiro waved, going down a different hallway.

Lin waved back but she kept on running all the while muttering how Shiro and Ura were leaving her with their hyper (insane) brother. Honestly there were days Lin though Kaito was a bit too catty.
When she did make it to her room, no doubt Kaito was already there. As her father had said there was the bird (stork) sitting at the window's ledge tapping at her window. It was kind of amazing it wasn't cracking it, in it's beak was a pink bundle.
"This is so not happening," Lin grounded out as she stalked towards the window.

Kaito was waiting at Lin's door, since even he had the sense not to go into someone else's bedroom without their permission. Still, that didn't stop him from peering into the doorway and staring curiously at the stork at the window while he waited for her.
He laughed at her comment. "It is, so you better get used to it!" he grinned. "Now come on, let's see what the fuss is about!"
His yellow eyes gleamed mischievously as he followed Lin into the room.

"You are far too happy about this," Lin told him deadpanned as she opened the window.
Before she knew it the pink bundle was shoved into her arms as she stared blankly at the stork. It bobbed it's head as if to nod at her or say good bye before it flew off leaving Lin standing with the wiggling pink bundle.
She stared at it as she backed away from the window not wanting to accidentally drop it out the said window. Though if the bundle was pink, chances were it was a girl. She stared at it some more as if it was going to bite her before unwrapping it... she.... her... daughter....
This was not happening.
Yet, with the cloth uncovered there she was, who obviously looked nothing like Lin. She had reddish brown hair, and fur. She had fur, well technically the tail had fur, and the ears...
"If this wasn't the way Salty was born, I would swear some fox parents are missing their baby."

Kaito peered over Lin's shoulder at the baby in her arms. He grinned widely. "Awww, she's so cute!" he cooed. "Congratulations!"
He reached forward and brushed a fingertip ever so lightly against the baby's cheek. "What are you going to name her?" he asked Lin brightly.
It was clear from his lack of surprise just how strangely the family had grown over the past few years (or more depending on how long they had been gone). How many of the children had been expected, really? No one had expected their first ones!

Inside Lin was stricken, true she of all people should be use to something this unusual but she never considered herself the mothering type. Sure she had a lot of siblings but babies weren't the norm in the family, and she had a baby fox girl.
"Name her? Kaito how am I going to look after her?"
Honestly she didn't feel ready for this, and she had traveling. How was she going to raise a baby with while traveling? Yet, Lin was not ready by a long shot to settle down at all.
Hell she didn't even have a mate.
Which could be said about the majority of her family with children.

"Don't look at me, I've never raised anyone!" Kaito raised his hands defensively. "But think - if she was brought to you, and the stork kept chasing Ojii-san away, then obviously she was meant for you, which means that whoever sent her, or chose you, or whatever, thinks that you can do this. Right? Besides, it's not like you're the only one here who will be looking after her!"
He grinned and nudged her playfully. "I'm sure Obaa-san would be glad to help you out, or anyone else here who has children. You have Helen to make her clothes, about a million brothers or sisters or nieces or nephews who can babysit when you need ... really, what's the problem?"

"Kaito...." Lin tried to tell him as calmly as possible without panic creeping into her voice.
Quite frankly she didn't know how her father sounded like nothing bothered him, he must be the best actor ever.
"In three days, we are returning to the Southland to travel to the Borderlands, and... I promised Alena I would deliver her message to Elros in the Eastland."
In other words her time in Gaia was highly limited on so many levels that it wasn't even funny. Okay it was slightly funny seeing as she lived more of her life in the Four Lands than in Gaia. Of course that also brought up the problem though not voiced that Lin still planned to travel.
