La Mulana is one of those fantastic exploration games that takes elements from Konami game(parodies too), and Metriod. The story revolves around this archeologist called Lemza, that explores a ruins called La Mulana to outshine his father that explored and vanished into the ruins some time go. Deeper in the ruins, more plot elements take place. It's really interesting stuff. The game is free. http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulanaPlease note that the ruins is filled with nasty traps and mind bending puzzles. It also gets very non-linear. This topic is for questions revolving progress in the game to finish the main story. I cannot help with side quest or the optional dungeon(never gotten around them). I'll try my best to help anyone finish this great game. I promise. It's an epic game I rank above Cave Story, though they are both great in their own rights XD For Wii owners, a Wiiware remake is supposed to be out this year. It's easier from what I heard so check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAsDRIF25SE&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZqZQkLqkN4&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2chMZYF9ajg&feature=related

Cave Story? Not completely. It has a following similar to CS, but the gameplay is different. It's not a side scrolling shooter and more exploration and puzzle solving. If you liked the atmosphere Cave Story had, you would like La Mulana.
Unlike Cave Story, it's not a completely user friendly game for newcomers. I even gave up on it for 5 months because I could not find out how to proceed... That was until I learned how non-linear the game got. And not to mention I had to take notes on the cryptic clues for puzzles(sometimes the clue is near the puzzle, but most of the time they are scattered). Some also requires a bit of research/knowledge on mythology and Mayan symbols... some puzzles are kinda randomish...
Fun game once you get the hang of it. There's alot to say.

LoL... Not sure how, but I'm stuck in the beginning. >_>; Money don't drop very frequently, and I can't figure out how to save the game. Dead ends here and there, can't swim or something... and... not sure what to do in it.
.... Should I get the 1.01 patch? Because playing this in Japanese isn't going to make too much of a difference, I don't think. >_>
Edit: Okay, figured out how to save. .... You lose your EXP when you load from your save. D= Still don't know where to go, with Argol blocking the west, and water on the east.

Lol. Okay. First things first. Take a look through the manual.
As you can see Lemza starts out with very limited abilities. But this the the beginning like limited in jump, not able to swim, low life, not a very fast runner, ect. Things would get better later.
To enter the ruins, you need to place a weight on a pedestal. You would see it early on your way while climbing up to the area with the water. To place a wieght on it, press up on it. This is one of the mian functions you would see within the actual ruins.
Note: Watch out for traps in the ruins. Some are nasty and others just do some damage. pay attention to clues like skeletons around a pedestal.
EXP recovers your Max HP and that's all. It helps when you are going deep into the ruins while taking alot of damage. You need Life Jewels to raise your life. The locations of these are easy, so you can't really miss them if you consult this topic biggrin
Once you get the Grail within the Guidance Gate(the first section of the ruins), it would be easy to get money. The Grail helps you instantly transport back to village and grail points you read in the ruins. Money in this game respawns after saving and resetting(except the village and pots that give 100-300 gold). You also recover all your life.
Things to buy: -Hand Scanner: helps you read -Game Master: you got it already -Glyph Reader: expensive but you need this to read ancient writings. Get this when you get the Grail.
To get the Grail, find this place where there's a skeleton that hints a passage behind a wall. The wall behind it is a secret entrance. Go behind it, push the block and the chest will open revealing the Grail. To use it, go to the inventory and press "0" to back to the village.
Oh! Controls.. If you didn't change them already.
M= Subweapon or Hand Scanner Space= Weapon Number Keys = When in inventory, use these to warp to grail points you read. Needs the Grail Function keys is for others things like iventory and stuff. You should know.

I also was recommended another game that's pretty fun that's somewhat similar, but not-so much RPG as La Mulana is, but more platform exploration. Probably more options throughout the game and different stage layouts each time you play for a new experience each time.

Haven't beaten it yet, but... yeah. >_> Definitely something you can play to pass some time.

I played that one quite some time ago. It's great but a bit repetitive at some levels.
