 Rondel hated to admit it, but she was lost. She huffed and looked around the swampy area she'd managed to wander into. She hadn't exactly meant to wander away from Melody, but one thing led to another and well...here she was...separated from her dam, miles and miles away from her sire, and lost in a swamp.
"Great...just great." she muttered under her breath. She took a few steps forward carefully testing the ground for soft spots. She was so focused on the ground that she hardly noticed the snake lurking in the grass just off to her left.

Guedes headed out from her failing shelter of rotting logs, pausing for a moment to nudge another bundle of stolen treasures inside. Another good night of collecting and taking what she needed and wanted from the forest and two-leggers. Now all that was missing was a few snake skins and those would be easy to gather in the marsh.
She turned and headed out to cross the water again and head back for the forest when the sound of bells caught her attention. The mare halted and glanced around seeking the source, her eyes falling on the small foal.

Rondel stretched out a leg unaware of the slitted eyes on her. The snake suddenly bunched ready to strike at her, it was then she caught the sudden movement out of the corner of her eye and twisted her head letting out a startled screech at the snake. Without thinking she lept forward lashing out with all her hooves to trample the snake, the bells on her harness going wild as she twisted and turned.
She continued on for several more minutes despite the fact that the snake had died on her second strike. She gasped for breath her sides heaving as the adrenalin left her system. "There...." she said before looking down at the bloody mess at her hooves. "Ewwwww! Gross!!" she said leaping back still unaware of the older mare watching her.

She snorted and continued to watch the foal completely trample what the mare needed.
"Thank you for that. I'm so glad you were able to completely destroy my creatures in the line of self defense." She said, stepping out through the shallow water toward the foal to inspect the now massacred snake. "What are you doing in here? You don't belong here..."

Rondel jumped and spun to look up at the mare, every fiber of her little body tightly bunched, her mane and tail standing on end, as the older mare's smooth and heavily accented voice rolled over her.
"I...uh...umm..." Rondel looked side to side looking for an escape before planting her hoves and looking back up at her defiantly. "What are you doing here?" she asked her musical bell like voice sounding strange in the dark place.

She lowered her head to see if any part of the snake's skin was able to be salvaged before looking up at the foal. She gently pressed her nose against the child's nose, snorting again.
"I live here. Not that a young thing such as yourself should know. You don't belong here, child. You need to leave before I feed you to the others." She said, smirking a bit to try and scare her.

Rondel watched the mare wondering what she was doing and what interest the massacred snake could possibly hold for anyone. She blinked her eyes crossing as she found herself nose to nose with the older female.
She then took a step back and tossed her head rebelliously looking at her side long. "I traveled from way back in the mountains to the plains to find my mother all by myself. What makes you think you can scare me?" she asked puffing up her chest.

"Such a distance to travel by yourself...I do that almost every night." She stated, snorting and standing up straight again. She honestly wanted the little foal gone and was seriously considering finding a gator to feed her to now. "You're not impressive, you're not even big enough to do anything to me that I couldn't counter with worse." She stated, staring the little foal down.
"You don't scare me little one. Go home to your mother before she wonders why her little one's bells are floating through the water." She lowered her head once more to collect up the only bit of skin she could save and turned to head back to her home.

Rondel considered that and figured the mare was right. She sagged a little the wind gone from her sails. The mention of Melody made her flick her ears back and look guilty and embarrassed. "Well...uh...actually..." she trailed off as she watched the strange female pick up a piece of snake skin. Her curiosity instantly aflame, Rondel scooted around the bloody mess and began to trail after her.
"What are you doing? What's that for? Why would you want it anyway?" she asked a giant ball of questions.

Guedes groaned inwardly, she had thought she was done with the little foal and there was no way she was about to show anyone where she lived. Turning sharply and dropping the skin, she scowled at the foal.
"I said go child! Get out of here!" She narrowed her eyes again when the foal didn't budge. "...what's wrong with you? Looking to get yourself in more trouble than your life is worth?"

Rondel skittered to a halt looked up at her with big wide eyes. "I'm just curious." she said innocently. "Haven't you ever been curious about something?" she decided to barrel on oblivious to the older mare's glares or wishes to interrupt. "I mean I would think you have to be. You've got a piece of snake skin, so you gotta be wonderin' about it, and I'm just curious, because Momma says its a natural part of being a foal." she said with a smile.
"So what's it for?" she asked bravely plowing forward.

She snorted again, moving quickly toward the foal and nudging her back into the water and away from the overgrowth. She was getting tired of her constant digging for information and curiosity. It's no wonder she couldn't stand foals. Let alone other full grown soquili.
"I know what it's for child, and it's nothing you don't need to know about. You're much too young and it will do nothing but get you into trouble." She stated, nudging her away again.

Rondel felt her back hooves touch water and instantly planted her hooves refusing to move any further. Rondel carefully considered the statement and then grinned. "That was a double negative! That means I can know about it!" a mischievous grin spreading across her features. "So tell me now?" she asked. "I just wanna know. What could it really hurt?" she said with a slightly pleading tone.

The mare's eyes widened a bit, listening to the little one before her. Perhaps she was smarter than she seemed, but it still didn't mean a child should be messing with the practices of voodoo.
"...I said no. No means no. Now go." She said, making one last ditch effort to drive the foal away before picking up the skin and moving quickly into the overgrowth toward the rotting logs.

"No! You said yes!" Rondel said getting annoyed now. She watched the mare move off and the little filly was instantly after her. "You said 'nothing you don't need' which means yes!" she fussed struggling slightly on a thorn bush, her scarf and harness stuck.
Rondel looked down and tugged hard once wincing slightly as she felt the needle sharp thorns cut into her side but managing to get herself free. "Oww..." she looked back towards where the mare had gone and quickly chased after her. "Hey, wait! Wait I need to talk to you!"
