Welcome to Fealty's journal

Please don't make any notes here without his permission

Fealty is currently staying with a family of farmcrafters in Ghenza. The youngest child of twelve turns has been moved in with two of his elder brothers, leaving Fealty with him room. Inside there room there is a narrow bed with a straw-stuffed mattress and a couple of blankets, a small chest for storing clothes, a small shelf for personal possessions, and just about room to turn around.

Nevertheless, it is private, clean and warm; all in all Fealty is very glad to have it.

Biography

Pre game history:

Fealty: quite a name to be saddled with from birth. His siblings were not much more fortunate in that respect; he had one elder brother, Justice, and subsequently acquired a sister who was named Charity, and another brother named Courage. His family was fairly affluent, and so when Fealty showed intelligence as a young child he had access to the best tutors available and all the scrolls he could read. While his parents liked the idea of him being bright, really they wanted him to go into smithcrafting when he turned thirteen. Fealty failed to live up to his name and refused to go; listening to the loud banging of hammers all day was not his style, he said. This did not make him popular. Only a month after his refusal, a Searchrider from High Reaches arrived and selected him as a candidate. Though not desperately fond of riders, his parents were happy enough to get him out of the house and so off Fealty went.

At first life at a Weyr as opposed to a hold almost overwhelmed him, but as months passed he began to settle into the rhythm of life. He did not, however, really settle into making friends. While the other candidates generally spent their downtime socializing, Fealty spent it studying. He had no particular area of interest, and found information on the making of parchment as fascinating as lore on dragons. The average candidate probably considered him a bit of an odd ball from day one, and didn't change their opinion much over the turns. Yes, the turns. Turns, and turns, and turns he stood for every clutch laid on the sands but every dragonet passed him by. At first it didn't bother him too much, he was just happy to be at the Weyr at all, but as time crept by he began to worry that he would never be chosen, and would eventually have to return to his family in disgrace.

With his twenty-first name day just around the corner, and therefore only one or two chances left, hopelessness is began to take hold. He could not face the idea of not being chosen, but knew very well that there was nothing he could do to swing the odds in his favour. Resolving to keep standing for as long as he was allowed to, Fealty tried to remain hopeful.

Circumstances changed somewhat for him when the plague returned to High Reaches, during a feast attended by the weyrwomen of Telgar no less. After giving the matter some thought, Fealty decided to take the chance to move to Ghenza, at least temporarily. There was as likely to be a clutch there soon as there was at High Reaches by his best guess, and the idea of escaping the plague was very attractive to him indeed. With few friends to say goodbye to, he packed up his few possessions and waited for the order to move out.

User Image

Appearance:

Age: Twenty turns and six months
Height: 5'5"
Gender: Male
Eye colour: Intense pale blue
Hair: Nondescript blond, short, flyaway
Skin: Light tan
Build: Somewhat chubby

Detailed description: Short and a little on the chubby side, F'al doesn’t look too much like what people see in their mind’s eye when you say dragonrider. His hair is non-descript blond, fine, and flyaway; he keeps it fairly short, but doesn’t pay enough attention to keep it looking anything like sharp and orderly. Perhaps the only remarkable thing about him to look at are his eyes, these being an intense pale blue. They tend to look a little far away though, F'al spends quite a lot of time wrapped up in his own thoughts and needs a good reason to concentrate on the world around him. Somewhat on the cuddly side though he is F'al is fairly fit; fit enough to keep up with his duties without difficulty, but he’ll never be one of those at the head of the pack when running laps.

Personality:

In brief: Hugely intelligent, hugely socially inept, dedicated, diligent
Likes: Reading, learning, intelligent conversation
Dislikes: Idiots, mess, making a fool of himself

Detailed personality: Sorry, you’re just not as smart as F’al; he’s not being rude about it, it’s just a fact you should accept. You’re probably not as socially awkward as F’al is either. He has no idea about tact, and though he’s read scrolls about diplomacy he certainly doesn’t know how to practice it. He definitely doesn’t have a way with words; if he’s not suffering from a severe bout of lethologica (it means I can’t remember the word I want, simpleton), he’s unintentionally spouting double entendres, being too blunt about sensitive issues, or annoying people by coming off as superior and aloof. Not too good at reading people, he’s seldom aware he’s put his foot in it until somebody get outright angry with him, or until Dith gives him an nudge and tells him he’s being daft again.

F’al enjoys learning and work, and throws himself into lessons with great enthusiasm. He’s always the one with his hand up to answer a question, and the first to glare at anyone making a distraction. Leader material however F’al definitely is not. He may be really very intelligent and possessing a strong work ethic but he can’t think on the spot to save his life, and has no charisma whatsoever. He isn’t too phased by this however, and so long as his leader is competent he’ll follow without question. If he thinks they’re an idiot, however, he’ll bring the matter up with one of their superiors; he has no intention of getting himself or his lifemate hurt because of stupid orders. He’d feel comfortable as a second in command if such a role was ever offered to him, but it isn’t a life ambition for him; he’d rather spend time expanding his knowledge of the world than elbow his way into such a post. He dislikes people who do jostle for position in that fashion, and feels the same contempt for people who think he should respect them just for the colour of their dragon or for their rank; obeying them in drills doesn’t mean he thinks well of them.

Provided there is a plan of action F’al remains icy cool in a crisis, and if there is a good enough reason to do so he’ll risk his neck without flinching. It would, however, have to be a seriously good reason for him to put Dith in danger; he is very protective of his lifemate and won’t tolerate anyone speaking ill of him. As he can’t fight physically and lacks the quick tongue to win arguments however, he is usually just left seething if anyone is really determined to make fun of his dragon. Though he viciously defends, or attempts to defend, his lifemate from anything unkind anyone else might have to say, F’al is perfectly happy to tease Dith mercilessly himself. The insults and jabs fly both ways with great frequency, and though their words might be unkind everything said is in jest; the pair absolutely adore one another. In F’al’s case, the jabs are his main way of expressing affection; he’s never been good at saying ‘I love you’ but ‘I hate you’ is easy and he knows that Dith knows what he means, and is happy to leave it at that.

In general, F’al is not a people person; he would like to be, but most people don’t seem to like him all that much for some mysterious reason. Though his bond with Dith is more than enough to make him happy, he would enjoy having human friends as well and with his dragon’s help is beginning to make an effort to be less of an unbearable tailfork, as the brown so kindly puts it. When it comes to romantic relationships however he’s not that fussed at all. Physically his preference is for men, but he’s not really interested in hunting out bedfellows either; if given a choice between a hot date and hanging out with Dith, his dragon would win every time.

Rider Appearance: Short and a little on the chubby side, F’al doesn’t look too much like what people see in their mind’s eye when you say dragonrider. His hair is non-descript blond, fine, and flyaway; he keeps it fairly short, but doesn’t pay enough attention to keep it looking anything like sharp and orderly. The Telgar Plague

Sometimes I really cannot fathom the stupidity of the average person. As if running around shouting 'we're going to die' is going to help the situation. Still, I suppose most of the others in the barracks are mere boys, I have a few more turns in me to level my head. Of course, having a better brain inside my head helps too.

So then, the plague has returned has it? All evidence points that way, I'm willing to accept the word of Yalin's son on the symptoms the weyrleader and the three others are displaying. I understand being afraid, I can't claim to be unmoved myself, but panic helps nobody. At least our weyrwoman has kept her head, and under the circumstances I feel she has made the best move possible. Sending away our youngest crop of riders makes sense especially given there's a queen in there; she needs to be kept safe in order to carry on the bloodline. Ghenza though... I wonder how that shut in little place was persuaded to accept outsiders, especially outsiders coming from a place that has just reported an outbreak of plague. Still, I suppose methods don't matter too much in the end, whatever Luci did was effective and that's what counts here.

Fortunately, it seems that it is not only the weyrlings who will be able to make the trip; at least a few candidates will be permitted to go along as well. I plan on being one of those candidates; the chance to study Ghenza and its unique culture is not to be passed up. Nor is the chance to get away from the plague; I have no intention of dying any time soon, let alone losing my life to something as ignoble as illness. No. One way or another I shall make for Ghenza. Who knows, maybe the dragons there will even like me better than the ones here seem to.

Ghenza

Go to Ghenza and study its unique culture. I can't think of an expletive strong enough to sum up my feelings on that little idea of mine. I am going to have to work in a field. This annoys me not because I feel it is beneath me, but because it is highly inefficient use of my abilities! You wouldn't hitch a dragon to a plough, actually they might here, nor should you send somebody who is all brain to do the work of somebody who is all muscle. Working the fields is no less important than say scribing, but I would be far far better at the latter than I shall be at the former. Yes, I know, I don't actually have any craft training but I am certain I could be of more use just about anywhere other than a field!...

But it is time to put my feelings aside, and note the wonders of this place. Their dragons are huge, and have memories comparable to our own. Riders are not worshiped, they are not sir or m'am, they are workers like everyone else. A wher is worth as much as a dragon. The whers are intelligent, or some of them are anyway. I gather it's all to do with a secret herbal mixture; in dragons it improves their memory, in whers it improves memory and intellect. I really wish I had some of that stuff and a few dozen hatchling firelizards; that would be an experiment worth doing!

In the end... Yes, I suppose I am glad I came here. I'm going to struggle with the work - I might be fit enough but I'm used to running laps and that sort of thing, I have enough endurance but very little physical strength - so none of the natives will have one iota of respect for me but this place is fascinating, and I refuse to let it beat me. Besides, there is another factor to consider; I'm one of the oldest people to transfer here, I ought to set some kind of an example. I might be able as much use as a leader as ice is as a fireguard, but at least I can stoically put up with whatever I'm told to do and hope the lads and lasses notice and try to do the same. In any case, tomorrow is going to be a long day. Time to get some sleep.

The 'family'

Everyone is settled into accommodation now, we've each been bundled off to live with a family, who we will repay for our food and housing by helping in their work. The family of farmers who got me did not look impressed. I suppose I can understand that; they must be thinking that the work they get out of me won't cover what I'll eat. Well, I intend to prove them wrong. I know for a fact that I eat little if any more than the average person my height, I just happen to have a very efficient body, hence the podge... It's going to be hard though. I just don't have the physical strength; I know what harvesting tubers involves, and it's going to push me to the limits of what I can endure.

I will succeed. Somehow. I will do all I can to earn their respect, or at least avoid scorn. The people of Ghenza appreciate hard work, maybe my effort will count for something, even though I know I will be able to do about as much as their twelve turn old. At first, at least. We might be here long enough for me to build up some actual muscle. That would be amusing, I can't imagine myself with a powerful physique. Speaking of powerful physiques, one of my challenges will be not staring at the elder son while we work. He's my age, and attractive doesn't even begin to cover it; nice body, nice face, nice hair, all boxes checked. He's also courting a nice young lady, so there go my chances, such as they would have been in any case. Still, I expect I'll be too tired to fantasize by this time tomorrow, and I can ignore his pleasing physicality until then. Probably.
