When had lest last had a good night's sleep? As she tramped wearily down to the beast pens, Layla found that she couldn't really remember. Leading up to and just after the touching, a combination of nerves and excitement had disturbed her rest, but those same factors had kept her from feeling tired at the same time. Then their weyrwomen had gone to High Reaches for that feast, and been quarantined, the plague suspected. Now they were back, but it was confirmed. The plague was at High Reaches. How long before it came here?
Rubbing her bleary eyes, Layla cast around for a shovel and wheelbarrow. Get to work. Don't think about it, just get to work. As soon as she located her tools, the candidate gathered them up and stepped into the first empty pen. There was lots of dung to shovel, best she get on with it.
Distracted by her worries and her weariness, she wasn't even aware of whether she was alone, or if somebody else was working down here too.

((Sorry bout being late...))
Tala had been down in the pens spending time with the new group of runners here in the Weyr. Its strange, she thought to herself, I always seem to run for the pens before I even start thinking about meeting other people. Petting a runners muzzle she started as she heard another candidate coming in. Sticking her head out of the stall she called cheerily to the other person, "Your up early aren't you? Couldn't sleep?" Dusting her hands and breeches off she stepped out of the stall. Seeing the other person shoveling out a stall she decided the best way to get to know someone is to work with them. She grabbed a shovel and began mucking the stall next to her.

"Oh," Layla blinked owlishly, too weary by now to even startle at an unexpected voice, "hi there." She tried for a smile, but didn't really manage very well; she could feel that it was a ghost of an expression, which would more or less match her pallid skin and the dark rings under her eyes. She probably looked half dead already, forget the plague, she'd kill herself with stressing out about it before it even claimed one life here, if it even came here at all.
"I didn't sleep well, no," she went on, "got a lot on my mind but... So... Yea, I thought I might as well get a start on my chores." Humm... Come to think of it, she didn't actually recognise the other girl; the Weyr was too big a place to know everyone by name but she knew the faces of people who had been here a long time at least.
"Are you new here?" she asked as she tossed a load of dung into her barrow. "I don't think I've seen you around before is all... My name's Layla, nice to meet you." Nice to meet you, and prepare to be bombarded with my worries, because everyone wants to hear about how we're all going to die, right? She should try to let at least a couple of minutes go past before she started freaking out at the poor girl if she had to do it at all. The last thing anyone needed at the moment was to be burdened with somebody else's fears.

Tala smiled warmly at Layla. The poor girl looked close to death. "Names Tala. Just got in the other day...Search riders dragon decided to cut a trip to the market short for me. To be honest I still don't feel like this is all real...But I figured I would calm myself down by coming out here early and spending time with the runners. They always help!"
Small chores like this came easy to Tala and quickly her stall was finished and she moved on to another one. Looking up at Layla she seemed like she was drawn tight as a bow string. Best to take this one slow then, she thought. Tala smiled again at Layla and laid her shovel down. "Come over here for a moment. I want to show you something. And its alright I'm not going to turn into a boogie man or anything!" She laughed and headed for a runner stall down the way.

Well, if it was something to distract her she wasn't about to argue. Honestly she'd had very little contact with runners herself; there wasn't much use for them in a Weyr, and so very few were kept, and those that were weren't attended to by random weyrbrats. There were more when Holders came to visit of course, but she still hadn't done more than pat one on the nose before, well that and clean up what came out of the back end of them.
"Tala," Layla acknowledged after a moment with another tired half-smile and a nod, "that's a nice name... What do you want to show me?" Leaning her shovel against the wall, Layla moved closer to the other candidate, glancing around as she did so in an attempt to work out what this things Tala wanted to show her was.

Tala beckoned Layla over to the farthest stall. There was a mare with a newborn colt. "This. This is what I wanted to show you." Tala walked up to the mare soothing her as she came. Laying a hand on her muzzle and blowing lightly into her nostril, the mare quieted and shook herself and then laid back down next to the colt. The colt looked up at the new comers and nickered softly. Tala motioned for Layla to sit beside her as she sat down next to the colt. "This little guy was born just before I got here. But just look at him now! He's growing bigger by the day and everything is new to him!" Reaching into her pocket for a sugar cube she held it out to the mare first. The soft lips of her muzzle tickled Tala's palm and the sugar cube disappeared. Reaching for another, she held it out for Lalya to take. "Just hold your hand out palm and fingers flat." She motioned for Lalya to give the cube to the young colt.

That. Was. Adorable. Layla gave a more genuine smile and sat down cautiously; runners might look very lovely, but it was important to remember that they were big animals that were easy to spook. Still, it seemed Tala knew what she was on about, and so she accepted the sweet treat from the tough looking girl and held it out carefully to the colt. After sniffing at it for a moment, he took it carefully and crunched in a contented manner.
Layla turned back to Tala and grinned. "That tickled!" she exclaimed. "He was very gentle though," she went on, "he didn't touch me with his teeth at all... So are you a beastcrafter? You seem to know about these runners, and you're very... erm... relaxed with them, I guess is what I'm trying to say? You seem very confident." It could just be that she was from a wealthy family and had owned her own runner before coming here, but crafter was the first thing that had come to her mind, and personally Layla felt it was a more flattering thing to ask than 'are you a rich girl who was given lots of nice stuff' anyway.

Tala laughed whole heartedly. "I grew up in a family of Beastcrafters. Both my parents were Runner Handlers. As soon as I was old enough I applied for apprenticeship. That's what I was doing before I came here." Looking lovingly at the mare and colt she sighed. "I have always just been more comfortable with animals then with other people. Animals don't lie about whether or not they like you. If they don't like you, they let you know."
Rubbing the colts muzzle gently, "You seemed timid so this little one seemed a good start. Plus, who could resist this cute little face!" With that she rubbed her own nose to that of the colt and when the mare snorted, Tala laughed and scratched her cheek roughly and rubbed noses with her as well.

Kaatan heard voices coming from the Runner beast pens, rolling on the soft breeze that occupied the air. He couldn't see anyone as he jogged the last twenty yards to the pens, and simply shrugged it off. Sounds like two girls... he thought idly as he picked up a shovel and made his way to a pen that was only a few away from where he thought he heard the voices coming from. Between the slats he saw two figures crouched by the newly born colt - well, it wasn't so newly born anymore. He shrugged and kept silent, looking at the first pen with a loose frown - busy day, even for being this early... Still, it could be much worse. The pens could be for dragons instead of runner beasts... The thought made him smirk as he set his shovel to work. Now that would be a chore...
He kept shoveling as he heard them talk, keeping quiet, though not particularly listening to their conversation either. The smell of the pens made his nose ache, and he wanted to finish this chore as quickly as possible, so he wasn't down here when the day got warm and the dung's smell intensified.

Tala's ear twitched as she heard another person enter the pens. Standing up slowly so as not to alarm any of the pens occupants, she glanced around the barn. So there was someone else here! She cleared her throat loudly and then ducked back down into the stall. Giggling silently she motioned for Layla to keep quiet.

She had heard the other person come in too, but hadn't been able to make her sleep-deprived brain decide what to do; she was supposed to be working, and it wasn't like her to slack off, so she didn't want anyone to see her doing something that wasn't like her... Still, it was only for a moment to say hello to the foal, but still again usually she saved pleasure for after she'd got her work done. But then she'd needed this, just a moment, a moment to not panic, she'd work better if she wasn't so panicked...
And while she had been thinking, Tala had acted. Well, she supposed she might as well stay where she was now; Tala had announced their presence with that throat clear so it wasn't like some course of action she took was going to startle whoever else was here... Not that they probably would be startled, most people weren't as skittish as she was... Anyway, she kept still and waited to see what would happen next; she was really rather too tired to think of things to do for herself so until her brain was actually working again she'd just do as she was told, by the weyrling/candidatemaster, and apparently by her peers too... Well, so long as they didn't tell her to do anything stupid and dangerous in any case.

The sounds that grasped his attention once more made him stop shoveling, the spade half-raised and half-full. He glanced at it, then back through the small slats at the girls, and smirked slightly. Beginning to whistle an old Harper's tune in a low, disjointedly melodious way, he emptied his shovel and casually walked around to the other side of the pen where he knew them to be hiding, making sure to alter the volume of his whistle to cover the soft shuffling sound of his work boots, but to keep it at a relative volume to their hiding spot.
He wasn't one to play games during work, typically, but it seemed like at the moment little was getting done anyway, had they been sent as well to clean out the pens.
Under the cover of his whistle, he sneaked into the pen on the opposite side of them, keeping low so the pen walls would hide him from them at least very slightly as he hid on their other side, his whistle stopping abruptly when he was crouched in the empty, filthy pen.

Tala glanced up and over the side of the stall wall when she heard the whistling cease. Looking quickly around she turned back and winked at Layla then crouching, stalked out of the stall. The pens were still dark as the early morning light had yet to creep that far into the Weyr. Still crouched she inspected the stall to one side of them, then turning looked down at the other end of the pens. Seeing nothing she started creeping that way. The mare whinnied once and huffed as she shifted and laid her head down next to her colt. The colt picked his head up again and watched with interest at what the silly humans were doing, his tail twitching slowly.

Right. Fairly soon somebody was going to jump out on somebody else. She didn't want to be either party. Rising to her feet, Layla glanced around herself, hoping to spot the mysterious whistler before they pounced on her. She'd probably jump so much that she fell over, and then she'd knock herself out on a wall or the floor or something. She'd certainly fall in some dung and look stupid, and then Tala and the whistler would laugh at her...
Wrapping her arms around herself, Layla moved cautiously to the stall door and then out, making sure to close the door behind her so that the runners didn't get out. She didn't want to spoil anyone's fun here, she knew some people liked scaring and being scared, but she didn't really want to be a part of it. Hopefully she was making herself too easy a target to be interesting to jump out at... or maybe the whistler would think it even more fun to jump on somebody who looked a bit nervous.
Glancing over her shoulder every so often, Layla waited uncertainly for the situation to change.

Kaatan popped his head over the side of the stall, his height making it easy to rest his elbow comfortably and look down at the one girl and over at the other, wearing a crooked smile. "Sent to do the dirty work, too?" he said casually in the semi-darkness, his light eyes visable even in the dim morning light that was just beginning to leak into the pen area.
The girl who was standing looked nervous, the way she carried herself, so he stayed where he was. The last thing they all needed was to startle the beasts they were among, and frightening her could easily lead to that. I'm glad I put the shovel down, then... he thought, smiling inwardly and suppressing a chuckle.
