"Ah-choo!"
Devicius' head jerked back, his jewelry and trinkets jingling against his hair as the motion jarred his entire body. His hat hung loosely on his one ear, threatening to plummet to the dirty ground at any moment. He growled within his throat, leaning his head to one side and using one one of his massive wings to push the hat back in to place. Once settled, he relaxed his muscles, concentrating hard on the building pressure in his nose. It was coming... he had to stop it! He held his breath... to no avail.
"Ah-choo!"
He shook his head, stomping his feet against the ground in agitation. Damnit! What was this hellish condition that he was in? Why was his throat so itchy, his nose so... drippy? He shuddered just thinking of the word. He must have looked a mess! How awful, what an abomination!
He sighed, his wings drooping at his sides. There was no use in stalking around his territory today--any stray mares that he might meet would simply flee at his unkempt image. Again, he shuddered; The thought of his beautiful body causing nothing but revulsion was a horrendous thing. He mustn't let anyone see him this way!
So he made his way to his usual spot--a small stream, the bank covered with soft moss and ferns, overshadowed by the mighty branches of the trees. He settled down on the ground next to a large tree trunk, folding his wings in close to his sides. How he hated this feeling, his uselessness, his helplessness. It was degrading, absolutely degrading. And maddening, not to mention it.
"Damn..." he muttered, feeling another sneeze coming on.

As her family took their daily siesta, Io couldn't sleep. She lifted her head, looking back and forth from her siblings to her mother, they were all in their own personal dream world, and here Io lay...Bored. Quietly....Quietly, She rose to her feet. Perhaps she could explore, just for a little while. She could be back before mother woke and realized that she was gone. She wouldn't go far, no, not far at all. There had been a small stream with creatures that her mother had called minnows and tadpoles...it wasn't too far from where they now rested. The small tadpoles had intrigued her, some of them had tails...some had legs...some had tails AND legs. She had to go look at them closer. Stopping just at the edge of the trees, Io looked back one last time...just to make sure that her mother still slept. Once she was sure, she quietly moved through the underbrush, her wings in close to her body, trying to make as little noise as possible. Now, where was that stream?

Devicius blinked away tears from his bright blue eyes--hell, that last sneeze had been more like a monsoon wind than a gust of air! What the hay was happening to him? He hoped that whatever it was, it would pass soon. He couldn't stand this much longer.
A soft sound met his ears. Tentative steps, from somewhere in the trees. They seemed to be nearing him at a steady pace, a pace that suggested either the individual knew that he was here, or knew not at all, and was completely oblivious to his presence. He hoped for the latter--maybe whoever it was would simply pass him up, and pay him no heed.
His eyes scanned the underbrush, then widened as the other individual came into view. What was that, a midget horse? One of those... now what were they called? Usdias? No, no. It had wings, four wings! Just like him. And it seemed... younger. Instant recognition hit him at full force.
It was a foal! The result of what some would call love, a lifetime's commitment--exactly what he despised. Foals were annoying, brainless, parasitic things. And they were exactly what he DID NOT need.
He shrank back into the shadows as the filly neared, watching her with narrowed eyes. Just stay silent, he told himself. If she can't hear you, she'll pass quietly, and you won't have to spend your limited energy on driving her away.
Then he felt the familiar feeling--itchy nose, building pressure. His eyes watered as he tried to hold it in, but it was too much for him. Without the least bit of silence, his sides convulsed and his nostrils let out a giant gust of air.
"Ah-choo!!!!"

She could see the stream, she had found it! Now, that wasn't too hard at all, just a straight shot really, so it shouldn't be too hard to return before her family woke.
Just as she was nearing the water, she heard a sound coming from her side. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes and ears scanning for signs of life besides the babbling stream in front of her. As she scanned, the sight of bright orange hair caught her attention. There was another soquili there!
She beamed a took a few steps closer to the soquili, it was beautifully and brightly colored. Much unlike her own family who was made of darker tones and little color. "Kazoontite!" she chittered at the soquili with a smile. It seemed as though this soquili was sick.
She cheerfully bounced over closer to the stranger, he didnt' look dangerous. If anything, he looked quite entertaining. "Are you okay?"

Devicius cursed inwardly. What had he done! Now the little demon knew that he was here!
He grimaced as she came closer, knowing instantly that this one would be hard to drive off, especially with him in this condition. He looked her over--she was a little plain for his tastes, her colors were dark and dreary, except for the light blues and greens. But still... just think of her parents. They must have been quite plain individuals themselves... too bad. The poor child would live her whole life oblivious to the fact that she could have been so much more, if only the fates had allowed it. What a pity.
He flinched at her words. She was far too cheerful, far too friendly for him. Did she not have any modesty at all? Could she not see that he was suffering here, and would not tolerate her playfulness? For heaven's sake, he didn't even know what to say to a foal. His usual dwaddlings were far too adult rated to even mention to one this age--what the hell did she want from him?
He sighed as she came closer, leaning backwards to distance himself from the bundle of energy. "I am perfectly fine, thank y--Ah-choo!" His head jolted forward, his hat falling from his ear. He growled, thinking of the dirt on the perfectly groomed adornment. How he hated this situation!
"I am fine, perfectly fine." His voice was angry, annoyed. The velvety tone was slightly defected, and sounded a bit hoarse, making his accent sound almost goofy. He hated it.
"Now shoo, child. There is nothing for you to see here. Your annoyance is not needed." His eyes narrowed as he regarded her. Was she... smiling at him? What was her problem? If only he was stronger... he would have chased her off himself by now.

"Oh!" she exclaimed as his hat fell from his head. She quickly moved to pick it up for him, "Here you go," she mumbled as she attempted to put to put the hat back on the stallions head, but he was too tall for her to reach, even in his current position. She paused for a moment then just lay it in front of him carefully as to not get it any more dirty than it was. "Here..." she nosed it gently.
"You sound sick." She stood there for a moment and peered over him, he was an intriguing sight to behold. She had never seen so many beads or curls. He was amazing. Her eyes followed the beads as they moved when he sneezed. "You're beautiful," her voice quite innocent. Her eyes moved over the jewels and stockings, his hat and feathers. "You must be someone important to be so fancy," she smiled at him again.
"Are you hungry? I can take care of you? Mom says that you should always eat when you're sick, to keep your strength up. Do you want berries? I saw some on the way in? Or some water, I can bring some to you...some how..." she paused to think about how she would get the cool water from the stream to the stallion. She'd find something....

Devicius rolled his eyes. Great, now she REALLY wouldn't go away.
He stared at the hat, looking back to the filly--wow, was she entusiatic. He ignored the hat, knowing that it'd be futile to replace it at the moment. All he wanted to do was focus on getting her to leave. But how?
Oh, so he sounded sick? Damn, she was observant. What an idiot. Anyone could point out the obvious, so when would she have something useful to say?
Then something she said caught his attention, and he straightened up, striking a rather elegant pose for one with a cold. "Yes, yes, I am beautiful. I am glad that you are so observant of the obvious." He huffed and left it at that--he wasn't exactly important, so to speak, but felt that he deserved a place higher than most Soquili, simply because of his beauty. He had heard of some of the more well-known Soquili, such as the elders and the brave knights. But who would give them a second glance when he was standing right next to them?
A growl resonated deep in his chest as she rambled on. Were all foals this talkative? And what was this talk? Taking care of him? She mentioned her mother... what an unfortunate soul, to have to deal with such an annoying foal on a daily basis. This only furthered his resolution to never have children.
He shook his head, his muscles tensing with building anger. "No... I do not need your help." She didn't stop. His eyes flashed; The anger exploded.
"NO! You annoying little imp! Do you not know how to leave well enough alone?!" His words came out warmer than he expected--he felt a twinge of regret. Couldn't she just leave? Then the both of them could be happy.
Then his eyes criss-crossed; He sneezed yet again, and moaned. Great.

Her smile broadened as he spoke, but she wondered why such a lovely looking soquili was so rude. Maybe it was just because he was sick. She could take care of that though!
"You need some help," she said in a matter of fact voice, "And I'm here, So, I will help you."
She stood up straight and tucked her wings into her body tightly so that she could move through the bushes and such. "You stay here, and I will find you some food. Then, then I will get all of those twigs and leaves out of your mane and tail. You're much to pretty to have them their...." her head tilted, "They just don't look good with your beads." she said blatantly.
"Be right back!" she turned and bounced off into the bushes, she knew she had seen some berries not far. She could break off a few branches and bring the entire branch back to him. It would be much easier than trying to carry a mouthful of loose berries. While looking, she was also keeping an eye out for anything that she could collect water with. Not far from her new patient, she happened upon a large piece of fallen bark, curved just enough to hold water. She made a mental note to come back for it.
"Finally!" she exclaimed as she once again found the berry bush. She carefully broke off several small branches as far down as she could. Once she had nipped off three or so decent sized branches she carefully gathered them in her mouth to take back to her new friend. She struggled here and there trying to get the branches through the other bushes, it was quite hard to manuver.
She finally broke through the last bit of vegetation near Dev, with a crooked smile on her face she dropped the branches in front of him. "There you go. Now...Let me get you some water!" and she was quickly off again.

Devicius sighed, knowing that resistance was futile. This little filly wasn't going away. Quite the contrary; She hadn't even flinched when he yelled at her! And look at that goofy little smile--she was... enjoying herself? Ughhh...
"You are quite the persistent little bug..." he mumbled, shifting his weight on the ground, preparing to wait out this unfortunate ordeal. One thing she offered did sound helpful, though. "Yes, I hate those twigs... no matter how hard I try, they always find their way into my hair. It's uncalled for--" he stopped himself, narrowing his eyes. What was he doing? He shouldn't be conversing with this foal! He was only egging her on!
But, for some reason, he didn't really care. What was done was done--besides, he wouldn't mind a bit of servitude in his time of need.
He watched as she bounded off, his eyes trailing her through the trees. She had a spirit in her incomparable to any other Soquili he had met. She was Angeni, like him. She was... his nose wrinkled in distaste as he thought the words, but he couldn't help it... she was beautiful, in her own way. It was hard for him to distinguish this sort of beauty, but it was clear in the way she acted: her soul possessed such an innocent brilliance, a child-like glamor, that it shone on every part of her outward appearance. Devicius had never known innocence, and vaguely wondered what it felt like to be simply... happy. But he would never feel happiness. That part of him was swept from his heart a long, long time ago.
Then she came bounding back, carrying what looked like branches of berries. Devicius realized that he was hungry... strange, he actually felt gratitude towards this little foal.
His voice was a bit strangled as he murmured, "Thanks..." Then he realized that he didn't know her name! He wanted to know. "You, little imp...what is your name?" But she was already gone. Had she heard him? He sighed, looking at the berries, then tentatively nibbled at a few. Well... at least they were sweet.

Io returned to the large piece of bark that lay on the ground, she picked it up with her mouth, it was much more sturdy than it looks. She smiled to herself, she was doing good. She'd have her new friend well in no time!
She quickly moved back through the bushes, coming out at the stream. She lowered her 'bowl' into the water and started taking slow careful steps towards the stallion. Step....step.....step.....Stop. The water sloshed back and forth, she waited for it to calm before setting the bowl down, she would hate to spill it all over the pretty stallion's coat.
Once she had set the bowl down, she trotted over to his side. "Are you berries good? Do you want me to get you some more? Drink your water, I will refill it when it gets low. You must stay hy..." she paused, the word escaped her..."Hy.....You need to drink." she shrugged and moved to start working on the stallion's mane. Gently she started plucking small twigs from his hair. "You ought be more careful," she spoke as she was plucking. "When I grow up, I want to be as beautiful as you. Where did you get your beads? What is that thing on your head? Can you make me one?" she just chittered away as she cleaned.

Ah, so she hadn't heard him. It didn't matter--"Imp" was a fitting enough name for one so... energetic.
He watched with dread as she made her way towards him with the bowl-like piece of bark, flinching as water sloshed over the edges. Please, he thought, let her be more graceful than she looks. His eyebrow quirked as she set the bowl in front of him. Sure enough, the little demon had proved successful in her water-fetching, spilling only a few drops on his forelegs. He lowered his snout and stared into the clear liquid, then took a small sip. Believe it or not, it was refreshing.
"The berries..." he murmured, his train of thought interrupted as he watched her. Where did she get all this energy? He thought of moving away when she moved to pick at his mane, but he didn't, knowing that it'd be to no avail. She'd follow him, wherever he went. That, he was certain of.
One question came after another, and Devicius found it hard to keep up. Did the little fool ever slow down?
"Hydrated... that's the word you're looking for..." he growled, then gasped as she pulled at a strand of hair a bit too hard. "Watch what you're doing, little imp! I shall not have my image spoiled by the likes of you!"
He then shook his head, turning to look back at her. His eyes narrowed in annoyance, "It's a hat. And no, I won't make one for you. I didn't make this one--my father gave it to me. You'll have to find your own accessories, when you're old enough." Then he smirked, thinking of how goofy the little filly would look with adornments such as his. "You can dream, little imp, but it won't be easy for you to look as I do. I'm gifted--you're not. It's the cold, hard truth." He chuckled, once again envisioning himself as a healthy individual. If only he wasn't so miserable... she'd see. She wouldn't like him at all, if only he had the strength to be his usual self. Which, unfortunately, he didn't.
He sighed, clearing his head. Think, he told himself. There's got to be a way to make her stop talking!
"So... whoever you are. Where are your parents? Should you not be with them? Think of the trouble you'll be in." He dipped his head, raising his eyebrows questioningly.

"Oh, Oh..." she cringed a bit as he snapped at her, realizing she had tugged just a tad too hard on that one. "Sorry," she moved on to the next one, pulling at it much more gingerly. She hated that he felt so bad, she was sure that was the reason he was so grumpy.
"Hydrated, Yes!" she beamed at him, "-That- is what I was thinking of. You must stay hydrated!" she nodded and continued grooming him while he spoke. Imp...she wondered what that was, she just shrugged it off and considered it another word for friend.
She listened to his questions and his comments about being gifted, "My mom and siblings are taking a nap, I couldn't sleep. I was coming to look at the tadpoles, but you are MUCH more interesting. Well, if you won't make me one and I'll have to get my own, will you help me?" she inquired. She wasn't sure where to get beads and feathers. Surely with such a majestic soquili to help her she could look just as dashing one day. "I want to look as pretty as you when I grow up!" She jumped back quickly and did her best pose, her wings stretched out. Vogue. Vogue.

Devicius shook his head. "No, no! I'm not going to help you..." His words faded into astonishment as he stared at her. She struck a pose in front of him, doing her best to look what he supposed she thought was "beautiful". Of course, with her tiny legs and short mane, all it did was make her look silly. Devicius tried to hold his laughter in--hell, all it would do was encourage her--but he couldn't help himself. With a burst of air from his lips, he let out a loud, long laugh. What a little fool!
"Ha... you... you will never... never..." he tried to get the words out between bouts of laughter, but as he watched her, and listened to the sincere tone of her voice, he found that he couldn't say them. She really DID want to be like him. Well, what she thought was him. Truth was, she knew nothing about him, or what he did on a daily basis. It would be best that she stayed blind to that part.
He quieted, giving her a long, curious, thoughtful look. She really was innocent, and had done her best to help him feel better. As it was, he did feel a bit better--he hadn't sneezed since she brought him the berries, and now his throat wasn't as itchy from drinking the water. Perhaps she really was only trying to help him--though she was annoying as hell.
"You know... you do have pretty eyes. That's a start to being beautiful," he forced out, not wanting to shoot her dreams down so hardheartedly. He reached back and pulled a small bracelet from his ankle--he had plenty of them, so one less wouldn't hurt.
"Here," he said, tossing it at her feet. "Here's a start to your future. Use it wisely." His tone wasn't happy, but it wasn't unfriendly, either.

Never...never....Her head tilted as his words faded. Never what, she wondered? Again, she just brushed it off and paid no attention to what he could have meant. She straightened herself up and tucked her wings back in, not so tightly this time though.
Her eyes widened a bit as her smile broadened when he complimented her eyes, "Thank you, Sir!" she exclaimed "One day, maybe, when I'm older, I'll have pretty hair like your's too!"
She stopped and watched as he moved towards his bracelets, her eyes widened in shock as he tossed one her way. He was giving her a bracelet to start her own accessories? He HAD been playing with her. He was going to help her be beautiful too! "Thank you!" She quickly put her hoof in the bracelet, only then realizing that it would be much too big for her tiny legs. She frowned a bit, disheartened by the fact that she couldn't wear her gift. She looked up at him, unsure what to do...

Devicius sighed, rolling his eyes at her helplessness. The fact that she couldn't even wear one of his bracelets led him back to realize that she was too young, too innocent to understand beauty in the way that he did. She probably idolized him now, but was he deserving of her gratitude? No. He knew he wasn't. He had done too many things... hurt too many hearts...
His head perked up, his eyes blinking to clear his head of the visions of past trysts. This little filly... what was she doing to him? Making him soft?!
But something deep within him throbbed at seeing her so saddened over such a simple token as a bracelet. She really DID appreciate his gift, even if he hadn't given it to her in good humor. She really did like him, even though he had shown nothing but rudeness to her. And she really did believe in him--that his beauty was symbolic of everything he was, that he was an idol, and that he was everything she wanted to be. No one had ever displayed such feelings for him... for a reason he could not explain, it was warming his heart, that dark part of him blackened by years of his fathers' abuse. And he found that he actually liked it.
"Here," he said, leaning forward and picking the bracelet off the ground. He stretched his neck and draped the beaded loop over her head; when he let go, the bracelet slid neatly into place at the base of her neck. "You can wear it as a necklace until you are older. Then you'll be able to wear it as a bracelet. Now step back, let me see you--" He grinned, genuinely, and reclined backwards, exaggerating the act of looking her over. "There you are--you look beautiful already! A fine young specimen, you are."
