I'm a freshman in college and I had to get a meal plan. In the cafeteria, they have 'home cooked' meals, like they have rice and pasta and some meat (depending on the day) and lots of other stuff. Thing is, how do I log my calories when I don't know how many calories the dishes are?? I only eat there once a day for dinner, but dinner is a big part of the day's meals.
Same thing goes for when I go home on breaks and my parents cook. D:

You can guess, but it will likely be that you're guessing too little. ): "Home Made Rice" is usually loaded with butter in the boil-water along with god knows what else. Home-style means FATTENING, 9 times out of 10.
The best you can do is go for 1 plate, no seconds, and make sure half that plate is vegetables/fruit, 1/4 meat or protein and 1/4 carbs. That's what works for me when I have to guess, though. Just don't get the comfort food, it will kill you D;

Mm, I never get seconds. I get full easily. And I do get a lot of greens and other veggies/fruits. Thanks! Oh, and also, is there like a guide or something that i can refer to to see how many calories that is? Like you said, the 1/2 veggies, 1/4 meat and 1/4 carbs, how many calories would that be?

Get the calorie king book, it has so many calorie counted items in there, it is small so you can carry it in your purse.

hmm. Well I'm sure someone keeps track of ingredients and things. For instance some students might need to eat gluten-free. Maybe you could email or look around for a way to get nutrition info?

Usually that means that you get thrown under the bus and you pay for a plan you won't use in almost every instance. For my college we have things like prepackaged sushi, a great salad bar and a sandwich bar (if you go a the right time) Trying to pick options where you have the most control over what goes into your food is better.

Yeah, very true. There is a vegan bar, but it always has a really long line =/ and they still stir fry things. I looked up the menu on the school website and they have one :3 so today before dinner i figured out what i'd get and i looked up the nutritional values of everything. I think I'll just do that from now on!

Well, you could try calorie-count.com, but it depends on what veggies, what carbs, and what proteins you eat. Poultry is less fattening than red meat, potatoes/whole wheat is better than processed flour. Calorie-count.com is a good site for guesses though. (:
