Guinevere occasionally had cause to go to the playground when she had been looking after Lucretzia, but now that the little golden girl had found a home with an opera singer, the teenage Herald was alone again. She had Pucci, yes, but he was ornery, and conversations with him consisted of very sarcastic 'meow's. It was out of habit that Guinevere walked past the playground on this particular day, and as she looked at it, she bit her lip.
Feeling a bit foolish, she walked over to the swings and sat down on one, kicking off and swaying back and forth. Eventually she kicked off and tried to swing higher, but the set had been built for much smaller people and so instead of swinging, she knocked off her balance and fell.
"Owwwww..." she murmured, feeling hardly graceful. That was what she got for acting silly. She was practically an adult now, self sufficient, and she had to live in the present.

"Are we there yet? Orion whined softly from the back of the car. The young boy was eager to be at the park and play. Well, not play so much as use his new flying toy called a Kite! His own little wings didn't let him fly and Orion wanted to know what it was like. As far as toddler logic was concerned by holding the string of a flying thing he would know all about it. To find answers and know things always pleased the little herald greatly.
"Yes" Bastion replied wearily as he pulled the car into the gravel parking lot of the park. It had been a long day so far filled with disastrous nanny interviews, interrupted phone calls to unamused clients and the disappearance of half a bowl that had up until that point been containing soup. Now Bethy er Bethany was bathing Carina and he was taking Orion out to wear himself out, usually not a hard task, so the boy would hopefully nap until dinner.
Bastion loved his strangely acquired children but they were a great deal more trying and demanding of his time and energy than he had ever anticipated. Never having been one to compromise his own position or put others needs before his own desires before it was also a bit of an adjustment for the aging man.
A few minutes later, bright Orange kite held to his chest Orion toddled into the park, his small dark wings tucked to his back to keep the light breeze from tugging at them. Soft blue eyes stared in curiosity at the tall girl lying near the swing set. Was she okay, had she fallen or was there something interesting on the ground there? Orion found a great many things of interest on the ground when he was allowed to look.
Orion broke from his father's side and veered toward the winged girl determined to investigate further.

Guinevere looked up from the ground to see a child toddling right at her. Turning bright red, she scrambled up to her feet and dusted her dress off as best she could. Someone had seen her!
Looking up, she saw the boy's father, and winced. Make that two someones. Attempting to make herself presentable again and act like nothing had happened at the same time, she said "Goodafternoon, sir!" hastily and moved to leave-
Until she noticed the boy had wings. She paused. "Is he your son?" she asked curiously. "What interesting wings." It had to be a Herald. Why were there suddenly so many reborn messengers after there had been so few for so long?

Orion giggled he wasn't a sir and his father was only called that by the staff. Though a small frown had begun to form when the mystery girl started to move away, he wasn't done investigating her yet! When she stopped and started asking questions Orion relaxed and answered with a nod before his father could " I'm Orion and his." The words tumbled boy the little boy's mouth with pride and he actual spread the small wings in question.
Bastion had been relieved the girl was okay, a bit nervous about rescuing random people he met anymore. He politely ignored her blushing and tried to maintain eye contact without staring so as not to distress her more. "Orion is correct, he's mine in a manner of speaking." Bastion still didn't know much about what his son was and if someone was going to come looking for him, or who he'd been, someday. For now Bastion protected him and raised him and his sister as best he could but the dark haired man couldn't say for certain that he'd fight whoever Orion might truly belong too if there was some forgotten family he'd left behind.

"In a manner of speaking?" Guinevere said sharply, picking up on the verbal cue. Catching herself and adopting a softer tone, she added, "I'm Guinevere Orifiel, I'm a researcher who lives just outside of town. How did you adopt Orion?"
This time she realized her questions sounded a little suspect, so she added "I'm a Herald. Someone found a fallen being on the ground one day and sacrificed something precious to them to create me, and it shows in my wings." She flapped them once for illustration. "There are more Heralds in this town than any other on Gaia, and though not all of them end up here or fall here, a large number have been recorded to fall at random intervals. I was wondering if you came across Orion in the same way. It's his wings- They look like they've been influenced by something else." she explained.

Herald hmm? Well at least Bastion knew what Orion was now, not that it provided him with all the answers he'd wanted. Still being one of these things, and he could believe it based on her odd wings, Guinevere seemed like she could be rather informative and friendly. Normally Bastion would have been skeptical about strangers coming up to him and claiming random things, particularly ones interested in either of hid kids. This he saw though like someone recognizing another member of an endangered species and being honestly interested in them for no other reason than kinship.
Bastion nodded " That seems to be what Orion is, where do you fall from though and why? How exactly are your wings important and does the type of item really matter, I mean I gave Orion a map, will it affect things other than his wings?" Was it why the boy seemed to love wandering through the attic and manor like it was some grand adventure?
"I don't remember a map." Orion mumbled the toddler now fidgeting with the tail on his kite. He didn't remember cold or snow or anything his father said had happened before the day he woke up in what was now his bedroom.

Guinevere bit her lip and said "Those are both complicated questions. Starting with your first one, heralds deliver a message before they fall, I know that much. After that, they just seem to collapse like a broken toy, like they were only built for the one message, and that's where the sacrifice comes in. I don't know where we fall from. We look like angels, but I'm hesitant to say 'Heaven', since I know plenty of Heralds, myself included, who have a different faith or don't know what to believe in, and if we are working for a God figure, we certainly haven't been informed of it. There's no evidence besides the fact that we are coincidentally reborn with white wings, and to be honest, that isn't conclusive evidence. No Herald remembers their time as a messenger, though they may remember the message they delivered if the memory's triggered, so there's no evidence."
"Our wings are important as identifiers. They show what was sacrificed to us on the surface, though what was sacrificed to us can also affect our personalities. I dream of what my guardian did with the scissors that were sacrificed to me when my powers are in effect. I'm also good at sewing, but a large part of my personality is also due to how I was raised, so you don't need to worry about not having any effect on Orion- You will. YOu also have a bond with him, since you sacrificed to him. Even if you leave him, that bond will still be there, and though it has no magical powers, you won't be able to communicate with each other over distances or anything, you'll both be more... In tune, I suppose, with each other than everyone else." She coughed. "At least, that's how it is for me."
"What a Herald can remember about their sacrifice is different for everyone. Some don't remember any of it, some remember bits and pieces, but sometimes it comes back of its own accord even if you don't. As you get older, Orion, you might remember parts of it, or have a flashback, or maybe you won't. Heralds are pretty subjective creatures."
Guinevere took a deep breath. "It's a fascinating subject," she told Bastion honestly, "The more I know, the more there is I still have to find out."

Orion only understood about half of what Guinevere was saying but nodded anyways as he listened. Of course the toddler was curious now, what had his message thing been and how could he make himself remember it? Lost in his own mind the small herald continued to fiddle with the tail of his kite and let Guin and his father do most of the talking. Normally he was a talkative boy but now his mind was too busy thinking to work on talking as well.
This was quite a bit of information for Bastion to take in all at once especially unexpectedly. On the other hand it answered questions which was always good. Heralds sounded like a strange and almost pitiable species, they did something good, lost whatever spark of life they had and were then left at the mercy of the people who found them.. assuming anyone found them at all. Add to that being reverted to childhood and amnesia, well Bastion was suddenly a hell of a lot more fond of his own less complicated lineage and life.
Still, the idea that he might have some sort of special tie to Orion beyond that of a simple rescuer and sudden parent was interesting though. To Bastion it meant something he couldn't quite put his finger on at the moment. He'd have to think about this more later.
"Fascinating indeed," He agreed, grateful that at least one of their kind seemed to be recording their existence even if for their own purposes. " Is there anything special I should watch out for with him?" Might be a silly question he supposed what with the admitted objectiveness of the special. Ether way he rested a hand on his son's head and ruffled the pale hair fondly. He might be talking about Orion to someone else but he wasn't fully ignoring the surprisingly quiet toddler.

"I've seen some heralds that were traumatized by their message, or the reaction they got upon delivering it," Guinevere admitted nervously, thinking of Nikolai. "Look out for that, try to encourage him to talk and to play, raise him like a normal boy. Wings growing in can also be a pain at times, especially if you have a sacrifice like mine was." She flapped her own wings and flashed them a faint grin, adding, "I suspect his're just itchy though, so don't worry too much, but remember to try to be sympathetic."
She tapped her foot thoughtfully, then clapped her hands together, adding, "Clothes shopping is a real hassle, too. Luckily, some specialty shops on Gaia cater to people with wings, so try to shop in places like that, I guess. However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to learn to sew, either." She didn't know what she would do without knowing how to alter clothing. It wasn't just good for making outfits look nice- Sewing wingholes into a dress could be a lifesaver sometimes.
She looked at Orion and smiled when she had finished. "How about you? Do you have any questions? Or do you just want to get back to your kite?"

Bastion was rather glad Orion's previous form had wanted his map and not something more dangerous. Not that he'd really been carrying anything that fell into that category at a time. Still what' was the worst that could happen now accidental paper cut someday? That trauma via message thing was worrying though and the man could only hope Orion's was nothing negative.
"I can't sew myself to save my life but I'm sure " can find someone who does," Bastion murmured. " I can't promise him a normal childhood but" god knew his own life wasn't always stable , " But I'll do what I can." He was already doing his best what with parent hood having been suddenly thrust at him.
Orion jerked his head up to stare at Guinevere when she spoke to him again. " Mmm" Questions, did he have questions? " Can you fly?" Could he learn to fly and go places in the sky like his kite?

Guinevere grinned. "Well, that's the fun part of being a Herald. You can fly, and I can fly for now, but if my wings lose any more feathers, it's probably gonna be tricky for me. It's tough to get off the ground the first time, but once you get the hang of it, flying'll be easy."
Looking over to Bastion, she added, "Well, it's not really the normal part that I think matters, but just making sure that he's happy. I don't think that 'normal' necessarily equates to 'good' so long as you raise him in the best way you can." She ran a hand through her hair, looking at the herald boy, and joked, "I wish my sacrifice was a map. That sounds a lot more exciting than some rusty scissors. Dashing, you know, Indiana Jones and all that."
Biting her lip, she added, "If you need any more help, or if something unusual comes up, I can give you my number. I sort of research Heralds, so it'd be good if you could let me know."

Bastion rather hoped Orion wouldn't try to fly, his wings looked far too small for it right now and god forbid he try it by doing something like jumping off the second story. Still the idea that his son might fly someday was intriguing. He nodded in response to Guine's words as he thought though, if nothing else he was trying with Orion. "I don't see a problem staying in touch and as long as you don't want to experiment on him or ask him to keep secrets" there was a mild warning tone there in the man's voice, same species or not the two were not to attempt to hide things from him, " I think it should be fine."
Orion stretched his dark wings out as much as possible and grinned "I'm exciting" he proclaimed proudly. He surprised his father every day and he explored new things, like the very dusty attic, doing as much as he could until he small body was worn out and he just curled up somewhere for a nap.

Guinevere hastily shook her head. "Oh, no! I'm a responsible adult, I would never experiment on a child! A-and, people tell me I'm far too nosy to keep secrets well anyway." she muttered sheepishly.
It took her a moment to realize that, despite the stipulations, he had said yes, so she paused before adding, "Oh! Thank you!" and rummaging around in her bag for a piece of paper. Scribbling on it hastily, she handed him her number and added, "That's my cell phone number, so please call if anything strange happens. There are some bizarre Heralds in the world, but even for ones that develop normally like Orion seems to be doing, new and peculiar phenomena can occur at any time."
She began to get ready to leave, but looked back at Bastion and added, "I'll let you know if I discover anything important, too if you want. I doubt that there's anything that dramatic to worry about a Herald's growth cycle, but if I think it might concern you, I'll let you know."

Bastion nodded as he slipped the phone number into his pocket. " I'd appreciate that." He didn't have business card on himself at the moment but he could always call the young woman later and call display would give her his number. " It's been a pleasure meeting you." The dark haired man could tell Guinevere wanted to go and he'd run out of things to say as it was.
Orion made a noise of confirmation to echo his father's sentiments, the young herald somewhat distracted again by the tail of his kite which was not threaded through his fingers.

Guinevere accepted it with a "Thank you very much! It was nice to meet you and Orion as well." A grateful bob of her head, and she looked back at them one last time before leaving. There was a smile tugging at her lips as she left. it was always nice to learn about another Herald, and now that they seemed to be falling again, her research would surely progress more quickly.
