Solitaire wasn't the most entertaining of card games that John Knight could have been playing at this point in time. He had come to the Hall in order to pass the time, as early mornings did tend to pass slowly when one was alone. Of course, even the hired staff in the apartments above were asleep. Aerospark was likely sleeping comfortably in his den, snoring the early morning away. Jack had gotten three hours of sleep at most when at his age, he was used to getting as much as twelve. That being said, he was tired, irritable, and bored out of his withered old mind. Not to mention, as he lifted flipped over each aged card in the pile at the corner of the small table, he was losing to himself.

Jack considered ignoring the rules entirely, though if he was doing that, he may as well have been simply organizing his deck in each suit from ace to king. With a heavy, exasperated sigh, Jack flipped all of the cards to the same side and shuffled them together again. Inspiration striking, he took two cards from the top of the deck and set them at an angle against each other in the middle of the table. It had been a while since the last time he made a card pyramid. He repeated this until there were four card triangles that would serve as the base. When he tried to start the second row, inevitably, his hand slipped and what had been made tumbled into a messy pile. Jack groaned and leaned his head on an open palm, his elbow resting on the table. He was reminded that there was a very good reason that he'd stopped.

The first signs of life were appearing on the Training Field, he noticed looking through a nearby window. Jack could entertain himself watching them for now, but as soon as someone entered the Hall, there would be something far more entertaining to do. He had a 100 coins or so in his pocket at the moment and he reckoned that if someone wanted to, they could try their hand at gambling it all away from him. With as long as Jack had been working for New Eve, a fair amount had piled up. He could easily do away with 100 coins for a little entertainment.

Groaning the red-head stepped slowly into the sunlight. And so another peaceful night had come to an end and he was thrust back into the hectic life of the fort. As he passed through the door he slightly traced one of the branches of the tree he had painted on the wall of his barracks. A branch for every battle he had survived. Hopefully it would grow to be a very large tree. Closing the door softly behind him he was satisfied by the click of the lock before moving off towards the Hall. He could at least be glad that the weather was tolerable. That was something he could be glad of at least. Adjusting the bag around his shoulder so it wouldn’t grate on the nerve quite so much he hunched against the wind. The weather was slightly better today, but the wind still bit sharper than any wolf. He would be glad to get to the Hall. At some point this morning Spiritfeather had left him to hunt, he knew as much by the rabbit foot she had left in her den when her looked in on her. The foot served as a note, she went to hunt and would be back later. A convenient form of communication between them.

The warmth of the hall reached out to embrace him and at the same time forced him to pay attention. There was a greater likelihood he could run into someone in here, he needed to be watching where he was going. Making his way towards the kitchens he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He couldn’t seem to get himself motivated this morning, it already felt like it was going to be a long day. Quickly making himself a cup of coffee and grabbing a bowl of biscuits and gravy he glanced around the Hall. For some reason sitting alone didn’t sound so appealing this morning.

His old Patron seemed to be sitting alone with a deck of cards in hand. Old in more ways than one. How long had it been since he’d spoken with the man? It seemed like ages. Seeing no better opportunities throwing themselves in his pass, he didn’t exactly see Eustace about after all, he made his way over to Jack. Without a word he sat down across from the man and sipped at his coffee. “Morning old man.” He said, his voice still rough with sleep and scorched by the coffee. Not that that stopped Clyde from digging into his breakfast. The only reason he’d left his Barracks at all this morning was because he was starving and hadn’t had a chance to restock his own supply of food. He was noticeably lacking in the beef jerky his family often sent, he’d have to put out a request for some next time one of the messengers was heading for the city.

Her barracks had been perfectly warm and cozy but all things considered Rhoshandria was hungry. And her hunger generally dictated that she raid the hall in a hunt for food. Preferred something with meat, perhaps a bit of bacon. Ha! As if the hall ever dished out such fine things without a bit of...persuasion. Eyeing her bonded and rolling her eyes at the snort from the wolf, Rho merely waved a hand at the, what she called, lazy ball of fur and returned to her rummaging around for her coat. She'd be damned if she walked out of her barracks without it, especially if she wanted to live to make it to the hall and food. There! A top a particularly precariously balanced pile of folded laundry was her beloved coat, possibly the most expensive thing she owned. Well aside from the customary hair sticks she used in an attempt to tame her multihued hair. But those hair sticks had been a gift and as such they didn't exactly count among her 'most expensive' items.

Fluffing her hair, she calmly side stepped a rather interestingly tossed and half gnawed bone from Summerwine. It looked bovine, meaning the wolf had been out hunting and mooching off some poor farmer's cattle...again. 'Really Summer, you would think at your age you would have learned how to ask before you stole and ate someone's cattle!' Scolding the wolf had never worked, not in the sixteen years she'd been bonded to her and this morning didn't seem to be much different.

I did ask. The wolf drawled, stretching lazily the bones along her spine giving a little pop as they slid back into place. I asked and the farmer said yes. Well that wasn't exactly true but when had Summerwine ever told Rho the truth when it came to her choice of hunting? The rabbits that hung around the fort at this time of year were too scrawny, the wolves hadn't had a pack hunt since the last alpha died, not to say LunarFlare wasn't a good alpha it was just Summer enjoyed pack hunts since that gave her a chance to cause chaos and not get scolded by Rho for it. Not that scolding did anything for her, she was a grown wolf and perfectly capable of ignoring a whiny human.

'Liar.' Kicking the chewed up bone back toward Summerwine's den, Rho wiggled into her coat and slid out of the door of her barracks ignoring the potentially insane laughter from her bonded. Sometimes she had to wonder how, in the flaming abyss had she ended up with an insane wolf. And people wondered why she had called the wolf Summerwine. Of course those little city rats wouldn't know what summer wine was even if they tasted it. To them summer wine was just bitter grapes and a dash of something that burned the throat on its way down, hot or cold. Of course Rho couldn't honestly say that the families living in and around the farm didn't make it a point to send some of the bitterest wine to the city at times, hell she still made it a point to leave little bottles of the thing out for those she harbored, a great...distaste for.

Tightening the coat around her body, even as she shook her hair out, enjoying the biting wind on her dark face for a moment before she continued hurrying toward the hall, it was still early out so with any luck there'd be very few people around and she could put in her...request with the cooks. Of course that little plan fell threw when she opened the door and beheld just who was there. True the hall was practically empty save for two people. One of which she had no problem with, the other she would take great delight in shoving several bottles of that 'killer wine' down his throat. Ignoring the duo for the moment she took her time in making a cup of coffee and setting out a small tray of toast among other things. All in all, she knew her wish of getting that bacon wouldn't come true anytime soon but hey a few bits of ham in a sandwich worked for the moment. She might have to take Summerwine up on that hunting invitation later, but unlike the wolf she would actually be asking and paying for whichever unfortunate bovine meet her rifle and Summer's claws.

Drifting back to the table, she deliberately drifted behind Clyde, casting a catishly mixed look of annoyance and general distaste at Jack through yellow-green eyes. A cat's eyes, that's what everyone told her and those were exactly what she saw everytime she looked in a mirror. Cat's eyes in a dark face. Of course right now she was more interested in settling down to breakfast and pushing the past and other such nonsense behind her. But not before she became the usual vindictive and poisonous thorn in Jack's side. "Morning love." she said nodding to Clyde and easing herself into the seat next to him, purposely ignoring Jack for the moment as she used her cup of coffee to warm her hands before taking a sip. "Still alive I see, b*****d." Yep, her morning was going to be so wonderful. Points to her if she managed to chase Jack to another table. Even more points to her if she managed to chase him out of the hall before it filled up with the other privates zombining in for food.

When Clyde entered the Hall, Jack was happy that someone he knew and someone that he could very well say that he liked had been the first to arrive. The young people were difficult to relate to, but given that there were few riders of his age at New Eve, he could have done worse when picking his friends. His friendship with Clyde hadn't really been a choice, though. Having acted as the Clyde's Patron, his choices then were either to draw the boy out of his shell or spend that entire nine months as his Patron resenting him. Though Clyde remained reclusive (drawing the boy out of his shell proved to be more trouble than it was worth and Jack gave up on it soon after starting), the two did become friends. To be perfectly honest, Jack was surprised that Clyde had come to the Hall rather than eating in his barracks. With the way that he greeted Jack, however, it would probably have been better if the young male had stayed in bed. Jack snorted. "Morning. Get up on the wrong side of the bed?" It didn't ruin his mood. Jack was just happy to have anyone to talk to.

And then, as if to point out that he spoke (or thought) too soon, the one person that he had managed to loathe entirely in his lifetime walked through the door. Jack hadn't looked toward the door since Clyde arrived since he'd already found his entertainment and probably would have ignored her had she not insulted him not a moment after she walked in. To make matters worse, for whatever reason, Rho chose to sit at the same table (and in an infuriatingly close proximity) as himself and Clyde. That she greeted Clyde and ignored him at first made him feel better. Maybe she wasn't going to be that malignant thorn in his side. And then Rho did manage to ruin his mood. But no. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction of letting her know it. That, and he couldn't think of any clever remarks to bland, overused name-calling. Jack toyed with a possible response in his head, but "Still animating that rotting corpse I see, hag" seemed a bit too long. Ah, the hell with it.

"Still animating that rotting corpse I see, Hag," Jack replied nonchalantly as he shuffled his deck of playing cards.
