Stay calm. Stay calm. I can think of a way out of this....

Even since Barren Pines, it seemed like Zue was just stepping in and out of danger. No matter what form he was in, something always had to go wrong. Of course, this same danger is what drove him out of the house to get practice in each of his new forms - he couldn't afford to be unprepared when things went south, after all.

But this time, he fretted, he might have really met his match. It seemed terribly unfair - all he'd wanted was to get some climbing practice in, and now....

"Mama," a little girl on the populated street exclaimed, peering upwards. "There's a big purple kitty in that tree!"

"Stop lying," said the girl's mother, not even sparing a glance as she dragged the girl onwards, "kitties aren't purple except in Disney."

Yes, indeed. Zue had accomplished the unthinkable. He had gotten himself stuck in a tree.

Theoretically, he could just jump down, of course. In his midway form between human and cat, he could perform all kinds of wild jumping feats; he was pretty sure that that extended to his full feline form as well. But Zue couldn't quite... commit. It was one of those things you didn't want to test out in a trial by fire, you know? He might jump to the ground, certain of safety, and then go splat. Didn't sound like a good deal to him.

He paced on the branch. It would be easier if he could change form - but there were too many eyes on the street below! They'd be gone at night, of course, but it was barely afternoon now. It would be hours. He'd starve to death by then!

Maybe if he just slowly lowered himself down, one branch at a time... it was better than sitting up here all day. Swallowing down his trepidation, the purple-tinged cat wrapped his front claws around the limb, took a deep breath, and let his lower body drop.

The entire limb gave a shake; Zue made a sort of "Eerk!" sound, claws scraping along bark, as he was nearly yanked right off the branch by the dropped weight of his lower half. He wasn't a small cat, and he wasn't used to that! His tail and feet kicked around in a wild panic before curling up underneath him. Gulping, Zue dared a peek over his shoulder--

Oh ******** he looked so high up from here. Oh ******** this angle made him dizzy. Oh ********... the branch was. Was right there. He could see it. Gently, meticulously, the cat reached down one of his hind legs for it. Stretching at full extension, though, he still couldn't reach it. If he wanted down, he'd either need to risk a jump or find another way.

Wide-eyed, Zue focused his attention forward again, his heart pounding in his chest. Okay; so he wasn't ready to risk a jump yet. Time to pull himself back up to the branch and consider a new route....

... Just one problem. When he'd had to shift his grip before, he'd lost the leverage he needed to muscle up his heavy cat-frame to the limb. Zue didn't think that he could get back on board again.

.... s**t. Would... would he ever live it down if he had to ask one of the Zodiacs to rescue him from a tree?

Meanwhile, on the street below, the sounds of a very badly distressed feline began to waft down from the massive maple tree planted in an unfenced property just off the sidewalk.

Yahya Grant was walking casually back to his apartment. He had a 3 o'clock appointment with a baby deer, and Columbus would be upset at being locked up in the bathroom for a few hours. But, the bathroom kept the kitten out of trouble, and away from the newest addition to Yahya's temporary family. Yahya just couldn't be away for long, or the family dynamics were bound to devolve into chaos. Columbus would start mewling like a lunatic...

Oh look, he could hear him already!

...Wait, what? Yahya was blocks away from his apartment, and Columbus didn't have a voice that loud.

He paused on the sidewalk, trying to place where the sound of utter distress was coming from. There certainly was a cat somewhere in need of his aid, and Yahya, of course, being the Savior of All Things Living (And Some Non-Living), would undoubtedly come to the rescue. The sound was awfully close, enough that it was beginning to make his ears ring. And, as fortune would have it, all Yahya had to do was tilt his chin up to the sky to see a cat hanging perilously from the limb of a tree just over his head.

Yahya slipped his backpack from his shoulders, unzipping it to pull out a pair of heavy handling gloves (he used them for when he was dealing with birds and other wild creatures - they would undoubtedly come in handy now). "Hang on there!" Why was he talking to a cat?

Because cats had feelings and thoughts too! He was sure that saying something would comfort the creature, or at least let it know that he was there. Yahya would have braved more than just a tree to rescue a cat... it'd at least look a little more heroic. He found some footing against a lower branch, and slowly began to propel himself up into the tree. That poor... purple cat.

The cat had to be very well treasured for its owner to go so far as to dye some of its hair purple. Beyond that, it was a gorgeous, large, and fluffy cat. Yahya was in love. He didn't know as much about cats as people who bred and showed them, but he could tell when a cat was gorgeous and prized. The owner would surely be missing it by now.

With a determined expression, he slowly inched himself onto a branch just higher than the one the cat was hanging from (mostly because this branch was larger, and could hold his weight better - he didn't mind breaking a leg when rescuing a cat, but that did not mean he wasn't careful, and would prefer not to have his leg broken). He hung over the ledge, and with a successful swoop, put his hands under the cat's armpits, holding him firmly and pulling him to a relative (if not higher) safety.

"Gotcha! It's okay, I'll get you down. Just promise not to claw my eyes out. I really like my eyes."

You know, it wasn't that Zue wasn't grateful. But looking over at Yahya as the boy climbed boldly up to the rescue, all that he could think was, goddamn; he really can't help himself, can he? Saving senshi from youma, Guardian Cats from trees.... Someday, this kid was going to get himself a Citizen of the Week award from the mayor, once one of his harebrained rescues finally got caught on camera. If he didn't get himself killed first.

The tree branch creaked as Yahya pulled up the hefty Maine Coon - who graciously avoided clawing the boy's eyes out, and instead clutched Yahya's shoulder with its front claws, holding on for dear life. "Rrrrr," he complained worriedly by Yahya's ear, biting back the equivalent human expressions such as oh god please don't drop me and you aren't going to tell anyone about this, are you?

Really, Yahya. You never had to mention this to anyone. Ever.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:29 pm

Yahya was ever-so-grateful that the cat wasn't clawing at his face. He suspected some flesh wounds from this ordeal, but he was happy that it was only his shoulder that was getting punctured by tiny, sharp claws. He cradled the Main Coon cat against his chest, soothingly petting the creature's head. The cat had to be pretty tolerant to let himself be handled by any human when he was in a clearly panicked state. Oh yes, someone would certainly missing this cat right about now. "Shh, good kitty. I'm going to get you down, don't worry." He spoke soothingly, because he really didn't want the cat's claws to get into anything else but his shoulder.

And so, after letting the cat get used to him for a few moments, he slowly descended from the tree. If Sue thought that as soon as he was on the ground he'd be allowed to get away, he was about to learn the extent of Yahya's kindness. "Hmm, no tag?" He moved some of the fur away from Sue's neck to check and see if he did have a collar. If not, he could take him to the vet's office tomorrow and see if the cat was mircochipped.

"I guess my landlord won't mind a very temporary visitor..." He sighed softly, and fondly petted the cat's head. "I could make some fliers, and see if someone claims you. You're too beautiful not to have an owner." Yahya hoped that the cat would... be okay in his home. He had squirrels, a kitten, and now a baby deer. He couldn't afford to have a cat who wanted to eat them all in his home.

At least it would only be temporary. Yahya would rather take the cat home than give it to the animal shelter or the rescue center.

.............. <******** should have seen that one coming, but really - ********. Of course Yahya wouldn't just turn him out as soon as the rescue was done - the boy wasn't so practical as that. Zue was being catnapped! The statistics had it right when they said it was usually someone you knew....

"Mrooooowrrrr," Zue complained, his ears dropping to their sides. All on its own, his tail started flicking around in agitation. He was unmoved by Yahya's comforting voice, or even the pettings (as nice as pettings were -- NO ZUE NO, DON'T FALL INTO THAT TRAP) - Zue was putting on his pissed kitty face, and God help anyone who got in the way of it!

... Except Yahya. Because see, if Zue were really determined, he could start thrashing around, clawing and biting, and even the most staunch rescue worker would have to let him go. But... he couldn't scratch up his best friend! So even though the cat began to struggle, it was a careful (if insistent) gesture, claws sheathed and everything. Unless Zue was willing to draw blood, his growling and kicking wouldn't carry much weight; and how could he do that to Yahya?
PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:25 am

He looked completely startled by the cat's agitation. But, cats were finicky creatures like that. He was just surprised that if that cat was so unhappy, why wasn't he throwing up a bigger fuss? Man, this cat must be a truly good-natured creature. The owners would be sorely missing him - which was all the more reason for Yahya to do anything and everything within his power to find them. The teen secured his arms more tightly around Zue, in order to prevent any sort of escape.

Why would the cat want to run away, anyways? He was going to have the promise of food, movies, cuddles and pettings until he got his new owner. What wasn't there to enjoy? Yahya would have to treat Zue like a prince when they made it back to his apartment - the cat had been through a traumatizing experience, and Yahya wanted to smooth it over as much as possible. "It's okay - we'll find your family. Until then I've got some canned tuna at home for you, hmmm?" It wasn't like the cat could understand him, but animals did usually respond to being talked to. "And some cat n** - you'd have a ball with that. I keep Columbus out of it, or else he just doesn't stay put."

He situated Zue so the cat was leaning against his shoulder, and then scooped down to grab his pack and make the journey home. Oh boy, would Zue not be happy.

Because as soon as he was behind Yahya's apartment door, there was no escape. Yes, when Yahya made it back to his apartment, the door seemed to close behind him with a certain air of doom. Yahya gently put Zue down onto the floor, meandering into his small kitchen to see if he had anything decent for Zue to eat. He very well couldn't give him Columbus' kitten food, after all!

Zue was doing a very good job of not looking like he was panicking.

He was doing a considerably less stellar job of actually not panicking, however.

For one thing, he couldn't stand tuna, and Yahya threatening him with it had given him an extra jolt of panic ("would a normal cat turn their nose up at it? Oh ******** oh ********, will I blow my cover if I don't eat it? ********"). For another, he was ******** trapped. Even if he thought he was big enough to reach the doorknob from the ground, he still didn't have the thumbs he'd need to actually turn it. And in a small apartment like this, Yahya was always right in his peripheral vision - no chance to transform, even for just a second, to slip away....

Not yet, anyway. Pacing in front of the door, Zue forced himself to take a deep breath. Eventually, Yahya would have to sleep - and then Zue would have his chance to slip out, disappearing like a ghost in the night. All it would just mean waiting out the day, and suffering the indignities of a feline life until then.

... Yeah, if there was half a chance at an escape before then, Zue would be taking it.

For now, at least, he attempted to relax. This situation could be worse, right? As far as he knew, Yahya didn't have any dogs right now - nothing bigger than he was, he was pretty sure. As long as he didn't get in trouble with the animals here, he should be able to last until his escape.

He hoped.

Ah, there! He had found something edible for the large cat. Of course, it was tuna. At least Yahya didn't expect the cat to eat it, unlike Zue believed. It was just out there if he wanted it, and in a few hours, if he didn't eat it, Yahya would get him something else. He opened the can of tuna and placed it in a purple plastic bowl. He might have been attracted to the color purple because of the cat's dyed fur. "Here you go!" He put the bowl on the floor in front of Zue, and meandered his way across the small apartment.

The squirrels were asleep in their pouch still, as was the baby deer (who took naps in a carrying case to keep it out of trouble). So, the only one of them that needed attention was...

Yahya grimaced. He could Columbus meowing loudly and scratching at the bathroom door. The kitten didn't understand that Yahya had to put them in there to keep HIM out of trouble. The kitten was a handful, a lovely handful, but still a handful in the end. "Now, don't you hiss at him. Columbus won't be able to do a thing to you, he's a fourth of your size!" he wagged a finger at Zue and opened the bathroom door.

Thankfully he caught the kitten before it could run up to meet the new visitor. He cradled the purring ball against his chest. "All I need to do is make fliers, and then I really do want to get them out before nightfall... I hate leaving the animals alone for so long, though." He couldn't withhold a small sigh.

Yahya moved back to the apartment's front door, which Zue seemed to be hovering at, and leaned down to pet him while keeping Columbus a notable distance out of his reach. That didn't mean that as soon as Yahya let his guard down, Columbus had wiggled out of his hands and was meowing loudly at Zue.

He knew this cat! Now the cat was actually LOOKING like a cat instead of just acting like one. Columbus purred loudly and batted at Zue's nose, Yahya's gaze ever-watchful on the pair.

ERK.

There it was, in all its mushy glory - the thing. Cans of it had been snuck into his backpack all through grade school, heavy ******** things that would spill out and all over the floor when he'd open his backpack to find out what was clinking around. There'd been one time in middle school that this one jerk in his class had actually stashed a tupperware full of it in his gym locker, waited until that kid Sue had stopped paying attention, and then dumped it over his head. There was a laundry list of nightmares he had involving fish in all its forms....

And today was going to be a new addition.

Zue gulped. He couldn't afford not to eat it; a starving cat off the street surely would, and he didn't want to give Yahya reason to think he was anything else! But... but God, that smell! And he didn't even have thumbs to pinch his nose shut either!

Easy now, Zue. You can do this. Just don't breathe in, take a bite, and....

Oh ******** he couldn't do it. His lips mere inches from the mush, Zue suddenly changed tact. Up went his nose in the air, turning away from it - and, surely by accident, there went his back foot, knocking the bowl aside. Snubbed, b***h, snubbed.

But now came in Columbus; and the appearance of the kitten gave him an idea. Because Yahya was very kind-hearted and wanted to save all the animals, right? But he must have a bias toward his own pets! If Zue could just give him reason to think his own animals weren't safe with him around, then Yahya would have to let him out. It was perfect!

Of course, Zue didn't actually want to hurt Columbus, or any of the other creatures. So this would have to be dealt with delicately.

"Hey, Columbus," Zue leaned in toward the smaller kitten, a conspiratorial purr underlying the long meows of his cat-speak. "I'll let you have this whole bowl of tuna, if you'll do me a favor...."

The plan was simple, quickly explained. Zue was going to pretend to attack the kitten - make a big show out of it, act mean and pretend to bite. Columbus, meanwhile, would put on his best fake-hurt show that he could. Zue promised not to actually hurt him, but he needed for Yahya to think he was really hurting him. And if this all worked out, Zue would get kicked out - Columbus would get lots of love - and everyone would be happy!

"Will you do it?" Zue asked, glancing quickly to where Yahya kept a careful eye on them. "Are you ready? The second he lets down his guard, I'm going to go for it...."
PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:07 pm

Yahya was relieved - they seemed to be getting along well, Columbus and Zue. Columbus looked ready to play, and Zue was being very tolerable of the high-energy kitten. If Zue didn't find a home, Yahya would have been tempted to keep him if he could mesh well in his family environment. Of course, Zue would have to be able to tolerate all sorts of animals that Yahya brought in, but Yahya was willing to try. If an owner didn't claim him, then Yahya would, and if Zue didn't do so well with him, then he could always find a very suitable home for the cat. He was a very good looking cat.

Columbus stopped pawing at Zue long enough to hear the plan. He glanced to the bowl of tuna, and as a kitten, his stomach was a bottomless pit - and he hadn't had tuna in a long while (Yahya kept him on a strict and healthy diet). The kitten's eyes seemed to shine wickedly at this little plan. Really, it would be fun! He'd get to be chased around, and then use his amazing acting skills to earn him kisses and cuddles.

This was foolproof.

"I'm in!" he declared wickedly. "If I do a really good job can I have your next bowl of tuna?"

Oh, how easy it was to hook the young into a 'game'. Columbus wasn't quite thinking about how Yahya would actually respond (he knew how the human would deal with it, he just wasn't think about it currently), or how much of a heart attack he'd give his human. Yahya would be fine, and would be giving Columbus the proper amount of attention the kitten needed!

Would it mess anything up if Zue mentioned to the kitten that, if this plan should work, Zue wouldn't be around to get any more bowls of tuna to give to him? Possibly, he decided; but luckily, he found an easy out.

"If this works, I'll bring you the biggest can of tuna I can find myself," he promised. Outwardly, Zue seemed to sink into a state of perfect relaxation. Look at that happy tail waving! His ears weren't back or anything; this wasn't even a grumpy cat, just one that was utterly content with where he was in the world. Clearly, Zue was going to fit in just fine around here, and if nobody came to claim him, Yahya could trust him around all the animals. Right?

Wrong. Because this cat went from perfectly happy to batshit crazy in half a second flat. Without any warning, Zue suddenly pounced the smaller kitten - and then the screams started, angry and full of spiteful hissing. He didn't seem like he was holding anything back - he went for deep gouges and hard biting, grabbing at the kitten whenever he tried to escape to dish out some more, chasing him down to the corners of the room.

The fact that he never actually broke skin, of course, was one that an observer from Yahya's standpoint couldn't tell. Zue was making it look good, and with any luck, so was Columbus. Any second now, Zue thought, Yahya would grab him away from the smaller kitten, throw him out the door - he'd have to be ready for the landing, Yahya might be a bit too enthusiastic about chucking him after this display - and Zue would be able to make his escape....
PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:39 pm

Columbus yowled, and Yahya was shocked right out of the seat he had taken at his desk. He saw Columbus running across the room screaming bloody murder, and the larger cat, who must've flipped a switch, chasing after him. Oh god! Oh no, oh no, no no no! Not his kitten, is defenseless little Columbus, the only animal that was staying with him on a permanent basis. Yahya nearly fell out of his chair in his eagerness to get to the two scrapping cats. He ran across the room, intending to scoop Zue up and keep him away from the vulnerable kitten.

Fortunately, Columbus met him half way. The kitten skittered over to 'safety' (hey, he had to make this look good if he wanted his can of tuna!), climbing up Yahya's leg pathetically, claws digging into the boy's flesh so that he could propel himself upward. He yowled dramatically, shook and trembled in Yahya's arms. But, no, he wasn't going to get coddled yet. Yahya was on Mission Impossible. He had to get the other cat.

With Columbus in one arm, he went after Zue, grabbing he cat by the scruff of the neck and hefting him into the air. If he got clawed or bitten, he really wouldn't care. It was better him than Columbus. He could recover from such things, while Columbus couldn't. Without checking the kitten over, he put Columbus on the counter.

It was to the bathroom.

Not out the front door.

No, Zue was going to get locked in the bathroom. He had made his situation ten times worse, because there'd be little escape for him now. Yahya walked into the bathroom, and closed the door firmly behind him. There was a carrying case in the bathroom, along with a litter box and cat food (he did end up keeping Columbus in here when he was away, after all).

Zue was doomed.

"Uggh, sorry big guy. Fuuuccck," he sighed loudly. "I should've kept a better eye on you. I hate to keep you in here when we're all out in the living room." What was this? Yes, it was true. Yahya was too good of a character to even throw out a rabid cat.

... That. That could have gone better. A lot better.

Instead, Zue now had not one, but two doors separating him from freedom. His chances of getting out of here before nighttime were pretty damn nonexistent, now - and it would be harder than ever to judge when the right time would be to make his move. Damn!

For a while, Zue just sat near the door, listening. He was somewhat hopeful that Yahya would change his mind and let him out again - maybe because he moved Columbus somewhere "safe", or because he thought he could give the cats a second chance to get along. Or maybe he would hear Yahya heading outside, maybe to go do his volunteer work or something - Zue really didn't know what he was hoping for, other than that when it came, he wanted to be able to see it.

But after a while, his vigilance began to fade. It seemed like he'd been stuck in here a long time - no clocks on the wall, though, no windows to the outside, so no way to track how long it'd actually been. Zue began to pace.

He paced for another long period of time, then stopped to listen again. Still no hint that his opportunity had come.

At some point, Zue broke into the drawers under the sink. Vindictively, he took the time to shred up all of Yahya's toilet paper. He might not be willing to scratch up the boy himself, but damned if he wasn't going to get his revenge some way. He was totally getting his fur all over the boy's tooth brush, too, so there.

It had been a really long time by now, but Zue still got the sense that it was nowhere near dark - and certainly, he could still hear Yahya puttering around in the apartment. All that pacing was starting to wear him out, after all the running around he'd been doing that day. He slowed down to a crawl, yawned widely. This was no good... he needed to be alert so that he could sneak out once it got dark.

If Zue hadn't been shut up in a windowless little room for God knows how long, he probably wouldn't have given into the fatigue so easily. But you know... there really wasn't much else to do. Just a quick little cat nap would see him through until night, he thought. He'd keep his ears pricked for any sounds of Yahya leaving the house, but a little time for snoring would do him good....
PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 2:32 pm

The door to the bathroom creaked open, and Yahya took note of the 'damage'. Zue was fast asleep on the floor, and Yahya was being careful not to wake him. Oh god... he'd have to buy more rolls of toilet paper tomorrow, and he'd have to de-clog the sink that was now full of cat hair. This was... a disaster, but it wasn't so bad. The shower curtain was still... oh wait, no, it was a little shredded too. Yahya would have sighed if the thought the noise wouldn't rouse the cat. Yahya had entered the bathroom for one reason, and one reason only, and that was to get Zue out of there... and still a safe distance away from Columbus. The poor cat didn't deserve to be holed up in a bathroom with no entertainment.

So... clearly the best option was to scoop the cat up, put him in the carrying case, and take him out to the living room to 'chill' with the rest of the family. He did just that. Shutting the bathroom door behind him, he gently picked the sleepy cat up (he didn't want to startle Zue, not when the cat had shown tendencies to be rabid). Zue was moved from his arms and into the carrying case, which was securely locked before Zue was ever given the chance to get away.

The carrying case was placed gently on the couch, and from Zue's vantage point he could see a horrendous stack of what could only be fliers. Fliers that would be all over the city by tomorrow afternoon, for anyone and everyone to see. From his vantage point, he could see Yahya now carrying a very tiny and fragile deer. The teen set next to the contained cat, and bottle fed the baby deer.

"I'm sorry you have to be cooped up. It was probably just the stress from being stuck in that tree. I think you're a good cat, really. You just had a bad moment. I just... don't want to take anymore risks, okay?"

There was a sound, and Zue had lifted his head up. Then there was motion, and his sleepy eyes had cracked open - he was lifted up, and they went wide open - and then, before he could figure out what was going on, the door to the pet carrier had closed and locked. Suddenly, quite suddenly, it was too late.

Were they going somewhere? The vet's? Another chance at escape? Whatever Zue might have hoped, it was fruitless. The trip was short, right out into the living room - still two doors between him and escape, but less room to maneuver now.

There was a very big difference between now and before, though. And that was the fact that he now had barely enough room to stand up and stretch - let alone change into a bigger form that could open up doors. What would happen if he tried to go human in this little cage? What would break; the carrier or him?

He didn't dare even consider trying. And so there Zue was: Trapped in cat form, crammed into a teensy little carrier that was realistically built for cats half his size.

You'd think that would be bad enough, but no. Zue must have sinned very badly in some past life for Yahya to have made up those fliers. Big bold letters on each and every one declaring him a missing cat, asking for his owners. It could have ended there with a bit of humiliation - which, really, he was slowly growing used to, so whatever. But it didn't.

Because at some point while he'd been sleeping, Yahya must have snuck in with a camera.

Because on each and every picture, there was a snapshot of a happily dozing cat, one who was big and purple and fluffy. With a painfully obvious double-star on its forehead.

Yahya didn't have any clue what he was doing, but he was about to advertise Zue's location to the entire goddamned city. And Zue didn't have an escape.

THIS WAS NOT ******** GOOD. And so the caged cat began to meow, somewhat desperately, and paw at the door - out, damn it, he had to get out before this all fell apart!
