Who: Vyn, Lazarus, Ethan & Kyou. When: An hour or so before lunchtime. Where: Empty warehouse in Gambino's industrial area. Weather: Chilly inside & still fairly wintry outside. Sending the report into the LAB had produced a pleasantly quick response. A typewritten letter thanking him personally for his contribution to their files on the raevan’s development signed at the end by the man himself – Dr Kyou. Alongside his thanks the doctor had also responded to Ethan’s concerns included at the tail end of the report (Vyn’s lack of control over her abilities) and the businessman’s hesitant request for some sort of aid for his floating ward. The raevan creator had been positively thrilled by the idea of catching up with one of his earliest creations and had suggested that his own adopted son, Lazarus, could aid Vyn by passing on his own knowledge on power development and control. Of course Ethan had appreciated all this and had promptly arranged further details for the rose’s lessons.
They would need a fairly private – slinging magic around wasn’t always best practiced in public spaces. Ethan had arranged that. With his business connections and plentiful resources arranging for the use of an empty warehouse hadn’t been too difficult. It was located in the more industrial area of Gambino about twenty minutes from his house and fifteen from the LAB. There wouldn’t be anyone else around besides Vyn, Lazarus, Dr.Kyou and himself. The space inside was plentiful and although slightly chilly it was practically perfect for their aims.
Vyn had mixed feelings about the practice session that her adopted father had arranged. On the one hand gaining a better grasp of how her powers functioned and learning how to use them without her body forcing them upon her would be really good, but on the other hand she would need to inform Lazarus of all the times that she had put people in danger when her abilities had kicked off and she would have to bring up the time in the alleyway where she had saved an elderly lady from a mugging – an event that she hadn’t exactly told Ethan about. On top of the issues about her powers she also felt a tug of nerves about meeting Lazarus and the doctor. It had been a long time since seeing either and they were both (as her Japanese learning had taught her) sensei’s and needed to be respected... Drawing her lengthy black scarf round her neck tighter she waited in the chill air of the warehouse.
Ethan was seated near the entrance to the building, just inside and out of the full cold of the world outside. Winter still had its icy claws sunk into Gaia and even in the usually balmy Gambino area there was still a need for winter-wear. He was much more upbeat and less nervous about the meeting than his daughter – the doctor was obviously an expert in his field of work and having him aid Vyn was most definitely something to be pleased about. Also... Meeting up with the scientist today would prove a good time to get the handful of visa paperwork signed so that Vyn could travel out of the country legally with him. Two birds with one stone!

A yellow cab screeched to a halt nearby, a man in a light brown duffle coat paid the cab driver and exited the car, followed by another being with large horns and wings and wearing a black pea coat. Despite being somewhat near the Lab, Kyou had never been to this area of Gambino before. There are a few warehouses situated neatly within the area. Slipping a hand into his coat's front pockets, he fished out a slip of paper with the address and most importantly, the warehouse number written on it. "D-3." He muttered, his breath turning into a light wisp. "This is row D, I think the third warehouse there is our destination." He said as he turned around to look at Lazarus. "Let's go."
The Sigel nodded stiffly as he followed behind Kyou. To tell the truth, Lazarus is still a little dubious of their mission today. The scientist received a report from Vyn's guardian last week, and had noted some interesting issues about the Frei's powers. If that doesn't pique Kyou's interest, he don't know what will. So today Lazarus was supposed to help Vyn gain control of her powers. The Sigel doesn't know where to start really, he had no experience whatsoever in training Raevans. Hell, he had yet to gain full control of one of his newfound abilities either. So it doesn't come as a surprise that he doubted his tutor skills. But now that they are at the warehouse already, it is a little too late to turn back, not that Kyou would let him anyway.
Walking up to the warehouse, the scientist's gold eyes scanned the vicinity for a door, and found one on the far right side of the humongous structure. His pace quicken into a jog as he approached the entrance, with Lazarus following not far behind, keeping up with his speed. Then raising a fist, Kyou rapped on the door, wondering if Ethan had arrived already.

Three sharp raps on the door of the warehouse alerted both the raevan and the human that their company had arrived and they both shifted from stationary waiting positions into movement. Ethan took the role of ushering the two curious figures inside thus he rose quickly from his seat to move to the door. Vyn on the other hand hovered slightly closer to the entrance with a less worklike and direct manner; her excitement and nerves displayed in her brightly glowing rune. Beating her wings spasmodically and her half formed heart raced as Ethan opened the door to allow the doctor and his son into the chill interior where the lesson would take place.
Ethan smiled warmly as the door was opened to reveal, as expected, the tall black haired individual who had in essence given life to his adopted daughter and so many other beautiful ethereal creatures inhabiting Gaia. “Dr. Kyou! It’s a pleasure to meet you at last. I've heard so much about you.” The businessman clasped the doctor’s hand and shook it with vigour before stepping aside and urging the pair to come in – what little warmth that had built up in the cavernous empty space would quickly flee to the frigid air outside. Of course, he given Lazarus an inspection at the same time as welcoming them. The male was more developed than Vyn – a sigel like Rivener – and sported two sizeable horns on his head. First impressions were good and Ethan was quietly pleased that such a capable looking specimen was taking the role of his rose’s tutor.
In the background of her hospitable adopted father Vyn watched the pair with shadowed looks. Her dark eyes were surprised to spy an abdomen had crept into existence on Lazarus and he looked much older and mature than she recalled. Of course, most of his trademark features remained – the crimson ram horns, the scribbled marking under his eye and the tousled white hair, but the radical growing up that had occurred made her feel almost as though she had never even met the sigel before and the nerves that had been worrying her earlier really began to make her feel the equivalent to butterflies in the stomach around her illuminated rune. Dr Kyou had gone through some changes too. His luxurious black hair was no longer silky smooth and longer but rather it was short and cropped. However, some things hadn’t changed and all in all he still had the same handsome intelligent air that had been present through her whole life.
Without the easy confidence of her father she raised a slender hand in greeting. How would this meeting go? Good or bad? It was too early to say.

"Mr Blake! It's a pleasure to meet you as well!" Despite his age, Kyou found that the elder man's hand shake was strong and firm. This is a sign of confidence, only someone as successful as Ethan Blake would exude such confidence and grace. The scientist immediately felt inferior to the man before him. When his hand was released, Kyou moved further into the warehouse, allowing the Sigel to enter and for Ethan to close the door behind them.
Looking around, Kyou inspected the warehouse surroundings carefully. It was pretty much empty with a few crates and barrels at the side, there is a huge empty space in the middle of the warehouse which is perfect for the Raevan's power practice. He was worried earlier about the location, because he knew Lazarus's powers can be rather destructive when needed. Although he silently hoped that he doesn't need to go to that stage in this session. "How did you find this warehouse?" He said, impress evident in his voice as he turned towards Ethan.
Lazarus nodded curtly at the grey-haired older man as he welcomed them in, noting his expensive looking coat. So this is Ethan Blake, Vyn's owner, and the wealthiest Raevan guardian to date. He couldn't help but noticed Ethan inspecting him with keen eyes. Stuffing his hand into his front pockets, he tried not to pay notice as he entered the building, eager to get out of the cold wind outside. The interior of the warehouse was definitely warmer, at least the air was still inside.
He noticed Vyn then as he moved in. To tell the truth, Lazarus don't remember the last time he met her, she was probably with her old guardian still back then. But it was so long ago that she felt like a total stranger to him now. She was beautiful, with an air of mystery about her. And she was quite busty as well, he tried not to stare as he made eye contact with the shadow Frei, raising his own hand in greeting in return as he moved closer. "Hello Vyn. How are you doing now? You know, with Ethan?" He tried to make small talk to warm up with the shadow Frei, but now that he uttered those words, he wasn't sure if it was a wise move to remind her about her old guardian.

Pleased at the doctor mirroring his pleasure to see him Ethan hastily shut the door before any more cold air could enter the drafty interior. After this was done he allowed the pair to meander further into the warehouse, standing behind them, hands folded and a slight expression of pleasure on his features. Dr. Kyou was observing the place and judging by the subtle signs on his face the black haired scientist was somewhat impressed. “Oh, I just contacted a few of my associates... They weren’t using it for anything today and they were more than happy to allow me to rent it for personal use.” He responded, moving forwards to stand beside the doctor. “I thought that it would be a suitable place... considering the nature of our wards.” He allowed a half smile to twist his lips. Lazarus was already approaching his daughter and a buzz of excitement tickled his stomach. Seeing how the fire raevan’s lesson would pan out would be very interesting!
The rose was actually quite pleased that the fiery sigel was making conversation with her. It was much easier when others presented her with an icebreaker – not knowing where to start was half of the problem when it came to her somewhat awkward social skills. The fact that he was talking about what used to be a touchy subject didn’t really faze her though. A year ago – yes, she would’ve clammed up and receded into dark memories of Shuura... But now living with Ethan had become an accepted part of her life and she responded without a great amount of difficulty. “It’s been fine. Ethan is really good to me.” She glanced back at her silver haired guardian with what could almost be described as a look of fondness in her eyes.
However rather than lingering on the subject and creating a silence she returned a similar query to the demon. “How have you been Lazarus-sensei*?” She unfolded her hands from where they had been clasped in front of her to loosely motion at his midriff and rune. “It was so long ago that I saw you.. You’ve grown since.” She tugged at the corner of one of arm warmers as she realised that not only were Lazarus’ smouldering crimson eyes on her, but so were Ethan’s and Dr.Kyou’s would be too probably...The weight of expectation was already mounting up...
*In Shuura's old journal Vyn referred to Laz using that honorific. So I reckoned she'd still call him that.. >o>

"Yes, this place is perfect." He said enthusiastically, glancing at Ethan briefly before returning to inspecting the warehouse. Without really realizing and Kyou in lead, the small group had started to slowly approached a large stack of crates at the far edge of the large building. It looks like a comfortable place to settle down before they begin their practice session.
Looking back at the pair of Raevans, he was glad that they are warming up to each other before the practice began. Although he was concern how the session would pan out in the end. He silently hoped that however it went, it wouldn't affect Lazarus's and Vyn's relationship too much.
Turning back towards Ethan, he smiled warmly at the older man. "In the report you sent me, you mentioned that you're bringing Vyn to Japan? I've been there before, its a beautiful country." He smiled fondly at the memories. "She would love it there!"
"You don't need to call me 'sensei'." Lazarus shook his head and flapped his wings once uncomfortably. The Sigel never really liked all these formalities such as 'mister', 'sir' or 'sensei', it automatically sets up a superior inferior relationship between people, and sometimes that makes people feel distance to each other. "Just 'Lazarus' is enough." He corrected the younger Frei.
Turning around, he started to follow behind the two human guardians almost automatically, urging Vyn to follow. But he adjusted his speed to accompany the female Frei as they moved. "I'm glad to hear that Ethan is treating you well." he said, the faintest of smile graced his normally grumpy face. Losing a guardian is a very traumatic experience for a Raevan, it is essentially synonymous to losing a parent. He had witnessed a few rehoming progress for Raevans before, namely Sevilin and Vyn. Although now there is another Raevan in the Lab that is going to meet the same fate as well, if she ever wake up that is. It is always sad to see things like this happen.
"And yeah." He chuckled softly. "We haven't met for at least three years if you haven't seen me in this form." Wow, time flies, he sometimes still couldn't believe that he had been a Sigel for nearly three years. "Let's hope this power manifestation could be a sign of your growth soon as well, you would look gorgeous as a Sigel I imagine." Lazarus didn't mean to flirt, but the words just flowed out of his mouth without him realizing.

Settling next to the crates Ethan slipped into a comfortable but not lazy position; hands in pockets, back not rigid but not slumped, head casually cocked to observe the scenes before him. Kyou’s mentioning of the foreign country pleased him. He had been pleased with that choice of gift – Vyn really had been ecstatic about it and getting the doctor’s words were like a seal of approval. “Ah yes, she has been studying the language for a while now and although I’ve never personally been there I have heard many good things.” He examined Kyou’s fond curl of the lips, wondering if the man’s trip had been a simple holiday or if warlock come scientist had conducted in more that sightseeing. The Japanese did have an abundance of myths and tales relating to all manner of otherworldly spirits...
Rather than prying for that information the businessman just shrugged off the wonder and returned to the practicalities of said trip – unfortunately he had got a fair amount of signing and paperwork for the black haired man to complete. Brandishing the wad in one hand he produced an apologetic smile. “Also as mentioned in the report I need your signature on quite a lot of forms so that Vyn can be clear to travel.” He placed the papers on the top of a crate between them. “Perhaps if you need to keep an eye on Vyn and Lazarus you can take them with you and mail them back to me?”
Vyn’s lips were pulled sharply to a scorned line as Lazarus instructed her not to refer to him as sensei... She had done so out of respect, but apparently the sigel did not appreciate the motion. However as the tanned raevan continued speaking, his words becoming softer and warmer, the quiver of discontent in her was replaced by a plain set light smile.
“Yes... Time does pass with surprising speed.” Just as the demon was taken aback by the time passing since his growth Vyn was equally awed by her total age – four years. In fact her teacher for the day’s following words soothed some worries associated with her age. Whereas other frei had grown she hadn’t. Sometimes when she considered the issue she worried that somewhere along the line she had encountered a rut and was now stuck... Somehow younger raevans like Rivener had overtaken her and were now physically older than her... For that reason the prospect of growth on the horizon pleased her.
The light upwards curvature on her lips increased even more dramatically when Lazarus’ compliment slipped out. “Thank you...” She shied her dark eyes away from his politely admiring gaze. Gaining a comment like that was precious to the shadowy girl and it made her rune glow brightly. Hopefully the uplifting sensation would aid with her training?

The conversation about Japan did brought back fond memories, it was years ago that Kyou was last there. But in some sense, Ethan's guess was very accurate as the scientist was there not just for sight seeing purposes. During his trip, he managed to capture not one, but two fel essences. However, it was still a very pleasant visit, Kyou especially miss the food in Japan. Learning that Vyn is learning their language pleases him as well. He had always wanted to pick up Japanese, but didn't had the chance and time to.
Kyou's eyes lighten up curiously at the forms presented before him. Taking the stack from Ethan's hands, he looked through the documents carefully as he took a seat on a smaller crate. Travel permits, visas, safety forms, letter of guarantee and a couple more documents were compiled together. That is a lot of forms. The scientist pondered for a moment as he stared at the paperwork before him, most of the fields were filled, only the signature field were left blank. "I think, I trust you enough about this." He started, standing up and placing the stack of papers on a larger crate. "I'll fill them out for you now as to not delay your trip so much." Opening his thick coat, he took out a small flexible plastic folder from a pocket, a single pen and a notebook contained within the plastic confines. These are without a doubt prepared for the upcoming practice session. Popping open the folder, he took out a pen and began signing the papers for Ethan.
Lazarus stared a little worriedly in Kyou's direction as the man started to handle some sort of paperwork, he was unsure when he should start this so-called 'power practice session'. Since now that the two male human seemed to had settled down nearby the crates, it just seemed like they had reached the spot where they will begin their practice today. The Sigel started to wonder how to start this supposing 'lesson' for Vyn.
Perhaps he could learn how it was triggered the first time around? If Vyn emulated that feeling back then maybe she could gain control of her powers, at least he knew that tactic worked for him as he recalled his bar scene with Rivener. "So this new power of your's, when was the first time you triggered it?"

Lazarus’ question signalled the start of their official ‘training’ and Vyn composed herself, folding her hands in front of her and regarding the sigel with dark responsive eyes. When did her power first emerge? She nodded slowly before forming her reply – remembering the times when her powers had decided to burst forth. “About a year ago... Ethan took me to see a concert – Rivener was there too.. I got hurt, panicked... And then all the shadows near me tried to protect me – but it only scared me more.” Recalling the incident still left her with an uncomfortable sensation. The lack of control over what had been happening to her had haunted her for weeks after the incident so it was hardly a surprise that it wasn’t exactly her favourite thing to discuss.
In hope that she could provide her ‘teacher’ with a better understanding of her power she continued speaking – building upon his initial question and fleshing out more information about her abilities nature. “It has happened since then too.. When... When Gage died.” A little reluctance and sadness entered her voice at this point, “I didn’t look after myself and Ethan says that my powers reacted badly to that..” She drifted slightly closer to the older raevan – glancing at Ethan. He was still in conversation with the doctor and looking relieved Vyn continued to inform Lazarus of the history of her abilities.
“More recently – a few months ago – I was shopping for Thorn.. My dog. There was this incident where a man tried to mug this elderly woman. He had a knife.” Her rune dimmed alongside the lowered volume of her voice, making it quite obvious that she hadn’t told Ethan about this and didn’t desire him to know either... “My powers appeared there too – though they were less uncontrollable. I could direct them – almost...”
Here she stopped and waited for Lazarus to respond. Hopefully he would come to the same loose conclusion she had achieved. Thus far the only times that her powers had come into play had been when she had been put into danger in some way or another... Finding a better trigger for her powers would indefinitely be more convenient and much safer...
Whilst Kyou signed the documents Ethan turned his attention back to the pair of raevans. They had just stopped talking and hung in the air with an aura of evaluative thoughtfulness... Their joint expressions made Ethan assume that they must be attempting to figure something out. With relaxed interest he leant against the crates – he could only really wait and see how things panned out.. After all, magic and mystery wasn’t his forte, that was the exact reason he had contacted Dr.Kyou in the first place!

Lazarus listened attentively as Vyn described her experiences with her power. So they had something to do with shadows, which doesn't surprise the Sigel, but intriguing nonetheless. He pondered the situations Vyn told him for a moment, and came to the same conclusion as the rose Raevan. "Your powers only trigger when you are in danger, guarding you from harm." Although at the same time, it could be potentially dangerous if she could control it freely. However, this posed a problem if they were to go along the emulation route for her practice session. It meant that he would need to recreate Vyn's fears from when she was facing danger, and he knew well no one liked that feeling. Lazarus had hoped that they won't come to this conclusion.
Breaking his gaze from Vyn, he looked around his surrounding. The warehouse was well lit, with windows all around the top of the building. It was pretty much empty as well except for the small stack of crates where Kyou and Ethan are situated, and a few stray barrels and crates here and there. This posed a problem because there really isn't a lot of shadows around the area, and without a strong shadow, it might be difficult for Vyn to practice. They needed another source of light to cast shadows.
The Sigel spotted a broken wooden crate a few feet from where they are at. Raising an index finger at Vyn, he motioned her to wait for a moment as he drifted off to get it. He brought the crate nearer, but not too near as he settled the crate upside down on the ground, with the nice and flat bottom facing upwards. Then without a warning he landed a punch squarely into the crate, breaking a hole and shattering it. The crate was old and fragile to begin with, so it was easy for him to pull some more stubborn planks apart as he settle them down into a pile on the floor. Placing a hand on the topmost wooden plank, he ignited the pile into flames. He had essentially made a campfire!
However his work is not done yet. Getting up, he moved towards the crate pile where the two adults are located, spotting a suitable crate by Ethan. "Excuse me." He said curtly as he lifted the semi-long rectangle shaped crate about three feet in length, careful not to hit Ethan with it. Then he brought it to an area in between the fire and Vyn; although closer to the fire, it is there that he placed the crate in a standing position on the ground, creating an oblong, more concrete shadow on the floor stretching out towards Vyn.
"There." Lazarus said breathlessly as he got back to the rose Frei, panting a bit from the work out. He waited for a few moments to catch his breath before he continued. "Now try to imagine you are in danger, that the box over there is a dangerous man with a knife, and try to move the box's shadow over there." Raising a finger he pointed to the shadow casted by the flickering flames.
Kyou did not notice the training session had started as he continued to sign the papers, skimming over the documents briefly. The noise of Lazarus shattering the box shocked him and the 'tail' of his signature shot up at an unusual angle. Crap. He thought inwardly as he peeled his gaze from the paper to see what was going on. Ethan had his eyes on Lazarus at the moment as the Sigel went around setting up the scene. Despite the awkward end, the signature looked fine so he compiled up the papers and stood up. "Mr Blake? Here, it's all signed." He said as he handed over the papers.
At the same time he noted the setting Lazarus had created before them. That was a brilliant idea, creating a more solid shadow in the vast yet fairly empty room.

Lazarus’ leap into action was watched by both the other raevan and her guardian. At first neither of them showed any signs of understanding why the sigel was apparently destroying the crates. He made short work of one, punching it and tearing it to mere planks and shard of dry brittle wood. Ethan was impressed by this show of strength; those sculptured arm muscles and masculine physique were more than just a show.
Vyn on the other hand was less interested in the physical capabilities of her teacher but her attention peaked when he placed a hand calmly on the pile and effortlessly ignited it. It was just like how Zul could so easily freeze and melt materials. She felt a pang of both jealousy and excitement... Right now she couldn’t compete with their level of control in the slightest, but perhaps after Lazarus had finished setting up this lesson she would be on the road to catching up with them?
When the incubus placed the crate in front of the flickering light of the fire casting a strong defined shadow Ethan and Vyn simultaneously understood what the older raevan had hoped to achieve. Ethan cracked into a smile and was about to commend the horned fellow when Dr.Kyou handed him the forms back. “Oh, thank you..” He responded, taking the papers, carefully straightening them, before placing them neatly on the flat surface of the crate next to him. “Lazarus is most impressive I must say.. A creative idea.” He remarked, thinking it best to commend the doctor rather than the raevan himself so as to not interrupt Vyn’s teaching.
Now it was her time to act. Lazarus had said to her to try and emulate those feelings of danger that had sparked her abilities before.. However, that was much harder than it sounded. With only a hollow wooden crate acting as a threat getting the same pounding heart rate, shallow breaths and shock of adrenalin was enormously difficult. That wasn’t to say she didn’t try; Vyn’s attention, every last drop of concentration, was focused on the band of black across the floor. She willed it to move, mentally pried at it’s depths hoping that her encouragement would provoke some sort of reaction... But alas, there was no response from the shade, not even a quiver.
Her shoulders slumped and her erect bat wings drooped as her black eyes peeled away from the oblong shadow and back to her mentor for the day. “It’s not the same...” She sighed, glancing at the fire nearby. The dancing flames almost mocked her lack of control. “How do you do it? Do you have any... advice?”

Kyou was actually hopeful that the shadow control would happen instantly, but alas to his disappointment, that was not the case. Perhaps he needed to be more patient, not all Raevans have a high level of control over their powers after all. Even Lazarus had difficulties controlling his powers in the beginning. Although he was the opposite, instead of no powers happening at all, his powers were going haywire everywhere. Opening his notebook, he started to jot down some short notes about the session.
"Thank you." The scientist looked up from his notebook as Ethan spoke, complimenting Lazarus. He had to agree with the older man on this statement, as he himself find the set up very intriguing too. "He is not really a book smart Raevan, but he makes it up with being street smart."
Like Vyn, his eyes were concentrated on the shadow on the ground as well, like if he stared hard enough with Vyn, the shadows would actually move too. When it didn't happen his wings gave an impatient flap as he got to thinking again about the Frei's questions. "For me, I guess I had too much power. In the beginning I had problems trying to control it too when I'm younger." He said, recalling the charred walls of the Lab and the smell of paint because Kyou needed to repaint the walls so frequently. "But as I grew older I just had better control of it through practice. Right now, it just comes naturally." With a snap of his finger, his hand erupted into flames almost immediately, the fire licking his hand harmlessly. Then as quickly as it came, the fire disappeared as he flipped his hand over.
However for Vyn that was not the case. She didn't have an abundant of uncontrollable powers to tame, instead her powers seem to be sleeping inside of her, refusing to awaken. Crossing his arms, he went into deep thought again as he tries to figure out how to help the Frei. "I know my powers have to be controlled with my hands." He started, as he considered the mechanics of his own powers. "Although from what you told me, you weren't physically touching the shadow when you triggered it. But perhaps if you touch the shadow now, it might be easier for you to control it?" It was just a suggestion, but it's worth a shot.
"And Vyn..." The Sigel began as he moved closer to the Frei. His crimson eyes locked to the rose Raevan's dark ones as he draw their distance closer, his gaze warm and smouldering. "Believe in yourself, you can do it." He spoke the words slowly and clearly. Then with a gentle pat to her shoulders, he broke the spell as his gaze returned to normal. Lazarus just thought that some special extra encouragement might boost Vyn's confidence.

Listening carefully for any pearls of wisdom that the sigel dispensed Vyn nodded alongside his explanations of his power... When she thought about it she actually preferred her situation over what he had gone through – going months at a time without interruption of her shadowy abilities was good compared to having things burst into flames on a regular basis. She had drifted slightly closer whilst intently listening to his worst and started back suddenly when, with a snap of his well formed fingers, he summoned a fist of flickering angry flames. Effortlessly he turned his hand over and the fire was extinguished. However, this display of ability was not just produced to startle her and send her careering backwards. No, Lazarus was making a very valuable point. If his power was generally controlled via his hands then perhaps her abilities also had some sort of trigger location or movement.
His suggestion was a very good one too and she found herself admiring his teaching abilities somewhat. It was a good thing that Ethan had arranged the meeting... Without his prompting and logical, almost common sense, instructions and guidance she wouldn’t have half as much motivation or technique when delving into the workings of her powers. She was about to follow through with what he had said when his intense gaze met with her amber eyes. The deep reds were ever so hot and his following words quite literally smouldered like amber ashes... Encountering such concentrated encouragement – unknown to her filled with a touch of Lazarus’ additional powers – meant that when she did move to float partially swathed in the shadows, her rune was beaming with renewed vigour.
Concentrating Vyn applied all that Lazarus had told her. She thought about the situations before, tried her best to emulate the same raw need for the powers to emerge. Taking a deep breath she focused on the shadow staining to floor beneath her. The presence of her rune cast a new red slant of dim light, making the dark dance in new an exotic ways. Move. Move. Mentally she urged the shadows to respond, to break out of the set position they had been given and bend to her desire... Frustrated she closed her eyes. In her head she constructed that situation with the mugger; silently she recalled gleam of the cold metal in his hand and the danger that she had felt. Perhaps it was this vivid recollection that she was inducing but her heart was most definitely speeding up. The lub-dub of it’s beat in her chest was heavily and slightly more rapid – even if just by a small amount. Exhaling and opening her eyes she gave the shade another push. Move!
A corner of the block darkness twitched and then, painfully slowly it extended to a wavering finger away from the shape cast by the box. The core of her body glowed with pleasure and Vyn’s lips curled into a smile. She had done it. “Laza-“ She began, urging her mentor to see what she had done. However, the moment her voice left her lips the shadowy tendril recoiled and the trace of control that she had exhibited had vanished. This didn’t spoil her excitement though and she turned around with glee plain to see on her face – vividly animated for the usually mild girl.
“Did you see that?”

Indeed, Lazarus had seen it. The organic-shaped black mass that broke away from the straight geometric shadow. At first the Sigel needed to blink to make sure that he wasn't seeing things, he even raised his eyes to look at the box, making sure that no odd creatures were casting the shadow. But there was nothing there, the box sat idly in front of the fire, nothing moved at all except for the flickering flames behind.
She did it. She really did it!
A smile broke across Lazarus's face as well, both excited for Vyn's accomplishment and pleased about his abilities to coach her, to know that it was his encouragements and ideas that made this happen. This boosted his confidence greatly. "Yes! I saw it!" He said, excitement clear in his voice. "Quick, try it again! Try to will it to go in one direction this time." The Sigel urged Vyn. Raising a finger he pointed to their left, approximately 90 degrees from the straight shadow's edge. This practice is for her to gain more control over her powers, wriggling randomly just isn't enough.
Like Lazarus, Kyou needed to blink a few times to comprehend what he was seeing. An excited grin spread across his lips as he jotted down notes vigorously, describing the details of the session. He knew the powers were along the lines of shadow control, but being able to see it with his own eyes is pretty amazing as well. "Ethan, did you see that just now?" He asked the elder man as he lifted his gaze from his notebook.

Enthused with the excitement that had come alongside succeeding to spur some movement out of the shadowed block, Vyn’s attempted to assert control once again. This time her heart was already racing somewhat, the shot of adrenalin that had come with the success was still working it’s magic upon her; setting off chemical reactions, tightening muscles, preparing her for the flight or fight response. Only it also acted as that trigger that Lazarus had spoken about; the key that fitted the lock and allowed her to permit a trickle of her magical abilities to ooze out. However, this time she could not just let the arcane within her core spurt in a random movement. Channelling the supernatural force was required if she wanted to complete the sigel’s instructions.
Her concentration was so intense that the rest of the world faded into obscurity. It was just the solid block of darkness and her. Producing the power came easier this time, the shadow almost wanted to accept that freedom of movement that the glow of her rune granted. But constraining it to her wills, mapping a path for it to travel along, proved more difficult. At first it leapt to move and tendrils coiled outwards from the box’s silhouette, probing the unconquered floor that it had moments earlier been denied access to. Vyn pushed against this shadow’s newly developed will and urged it to constrict its movement to the angle Lazarus had requested... But in doing so her slip on the flow of whatever was driving the shadow was suffocated and just as the tendrils began to form a wobbly yet obedient extension from the blackness, they recoiled – dead – to the inanimate mass.
Panting Vyn raised a clenched hand to dab at the thin layer of fire and concentration induced perspiration gathering on her brow. “I’m trying... That was closer, right?” She looked to her mentor for confirmation. She was sure now that she was getting closer. Next time she tried she would have better control over direction and she would sustain the length of time for longer. She had started now so fervent desire to catch up with Lazarus and other powerful raevans was burning as strongly as the makeshift fireplace nearby. Mastery couldn’t be achieved by the end of this session – neither could it be achieved any time soon... But she was going to put every smidgen of her effort into trying as hard as she possibly could!
Ethan had indeed seen what had happened and nodded slowly whilst his daughter prepared to try and do the same again. The unnatural movement of the shadows undoubtably brought his heart into his mouth. In the past such displays of her inhuman abilities had caused a sense of dread and therefore he couldn’t help being nervous. But as she shakily guided the shade into a wobbly line according to Lazarus’ request he felt a surge of relief and pride. Vyn was already making progress and it was all thanks to Lazarus’ creative and evidently successful teaching methods.
Clapping his hands together the businessman gave a one man applause to the pair of raevans. “Marvellous work!” He commended, his professional regard splitting into a joyous expression. “You’re doing wonderfully Vyn.” Perhaps this was what it was like when a human child began to get to grips with their times tables... This learning curve Vyn was starting on must be similar to that same parental pride that humans felt... Only this was more impressive. Literally out of this world.
