It had not bothered him so much when he had been busy gathering his packmates to their home. A trifle, a matter of puphood curiosity that had gone unsatisfied and forgotten after the one extended adventure he did have away from the den. Fantasia had been caught up in the influx of wolves, and so it was strange for him to recall one morning, after stretching and yawning quietly in his den, that question that had lied within his mind for many days. Mother had dodged it, Father had plumb out ignored him, and of course his siblings coudl have told him little about what they didn't know.

Perhaps it was because his mind had settled once more into calm that he could remember little things like this now, but Fantasia was thinking about the forest they were nestled by and what lay within it. Yes, he had traverse it sometimes, but plumbed its depths? That had been a faraway dream, imppossible due to Disneyana's paranoia about what lay awaiting, about a monster that she swore made its home at the heart of the forest . . . But he was close to adulthood now and co-leading a pack based upon courage; he could hardly let this sleeping dog lie, much less even a possible threat!

Thus it was with no trepidation at all that Fanta crept away from the circle of dens with the morning light, skirted the thorny barrier erected about the perimeter, greeted those on patrol with a slight nod of the head, and slipped into the shrinking shadows. He smelled deeply of roses more than wolf, and the scent comforted him as he padded along through the forest, ears alert for the faintest sounds.

Say aah. The thought flicked through the Crone's mind as she tilted a leaf upwards with her nose, allowing the water to run down and around a rose's roots. Water was incredibly important for her garden's survival, but it was something she had to be very careful about when snow was still so abundant. Having shielded her roses thus far, she often was often very particular about how often and how much they were watered or tended too. Her pride and joy, perhaps for the last time.

Her decision hadn't simply settled over-night. Nor was it a passing fancy. Albameign had known for years that she would eventually have to reconcile with her past. Just because you didn't see something, didn't mean it wasn't there. Like the spirit of her late lover, presence of compassion was an undeniable intangible phenomenon. And so after many years of trying to brush past the ideas whirling in her mind, the old wolf had finally lost her battle of avoiding that which tied her to this life. No matter how shameful, some things simply had to be faced.

Blind eye following suit as she gazed over her sanctuary the she-wolf noted the fear rising from the pit of her stomach. A fear that she knew would be her undoing if she should answer to it. No, no one ever got anywhere in life listening to such cowardly emotions, and with her life tapering off as it was, she didn't have time to wallow in the what-ifs.

Calloused old paws padded slowly through the forest as the deeply colored female kept herself at a slow and steady pace, the best combatant to stiff joints. How would she begin? Would it be better to leave certain parts out? There were a million questions that had kept her up many a cold night, but all her thinking was still never able to put her mind at ease.

Distraction in the form of the sudden appearance of a rabbit took a moment to register in the old wolf's mind. It was already racing ahead of her by the time she even caught sight of it with her good eye. Just as well, something to be taken as a good omen of days to come.

Alert to the faintest movements, he stiffened at once upon hearing a rustle up ahead, crouching in a ready position to leap away if something barrelled out at him. So quickly into his walk would danger present itself? But his overeagerness to prove his worth as alpha was squandered on . . . a rabbit? Or was it a hare? Fanta could never tell the difference for some reason. A wave of embarassment bubbledu p as he stood back up again, watching it go until the thing hopped right out of sight. It looked as if it were running from some creature . . . perhaps this was the target Fate was prodding him to.

Shaking himself off from the false alarm, Fantasia went back into creep mode as he crawled forward towards where the rabbit/hare had run from, nostrils flaring for a scent. Oddly, it was hard to place, something like flowers obscuring the air. If something was indeed there, it would not be long before he was spotted; gray and ginger fur was hardly camoflaging in this season.

Alba enjoyed watching life play out. When she was young she often had fought to keep pace with what was unfurling, but as the years wore on she had learned more and more that keeping pace was not nearly as important as understanding which moments were best to observe and leave untainted. With a contentment in her spirit at this glimpse of a better future based on the silly superstitions she held dear, she waited for the rabbit's form to disappear before she ventured forth, padding closer to its trail so that she could take its scent in in full to truly appreciate it as something else living and breathing.

The white rose in her mouth shifted slightly as she poked her tongue under the stem to keep a better grasp on it. It was one of her favorites, a beautiful white rose that gave her the encouragement she needed in setting out on this day.

As she glanced up from the rabbit's tracks she couldn't help but catch sight of something terribly out of place. Straining her eye she made out the ginger form of a wolf and immediately felt her ease of mind race away. This was a young wolf, much stronger and more unpredictable than she.
