Hokay. So, I'm in Wal-Mart.
Yeah, don't ask. Malls are weird for me.
Anyway, so I'm in the book section, looking for any cheap books or manga they might have marked down to five bucks. Looking in the new books section, I find something that totally sent my Phangirl senses tingling.
I see this book called "The Music of the Night" by Lydia Joyce. So, I pick up the book and flip it over. It's a definate rip-off in some ways, but since the thing was $4.88 I buy it. Just for shits and giggles.
Synopsis:
The bleak life that Sarah Connolly has always known is finally showing signs of light. She owes this opportunity to a dear elderly friend who has helped her leave a past of desperate penury in London to live a life of quiet servitude. But in Venice, Sarah soon discovers there is a darker side to the family she has suddenly been thrust among, and walking just beyond her newfound hope is a mysterious shadowy figure. What lurks behind his mask is a darkness that compels her... and a passion that makes her doubt everything she wants.
Sebastian Grimsthorpe, Lord Wortham, once enjoyed a carefree life, but it ended in an explosion of betrayal and violence. Escaping death, he embraced the appearance of it, concealing himself in shadows and behind masks so that he can exact a pitiless revenge upon the man who so nearly destroyed everything he holds dear. But his quest will take an unexpected turn when he is suddenly shaken by a women whose tragic eyes mystify him--and seduce him into a world of secrets and deceptions.
So I'm going to bite my thumb and read it, reviewing it here along the way for you guys so we know if this is a flop or a book to buy.

Sounds like a fanfic that got published, there are thousands like that, or one of those 'hey, I found PoTO very interesting let's use the plot a bit and twist it just to say it's mine since I don't know what else to write.'
I hope there's still hope that it doesn't sound that bad and author's still have creativeness in them. If not, then we could say that the book in no way is related to PoTO and that the title and the mask thing is a coincidence and toss the book away in the forbidden pile (in it resides some books such as the Phantom of Manhatton *shudders*)

Well, getting through about seven chapters today I realise the similarities are far and few.
Sarah, the main character, has scars on her face from smallpox since she was born on the street and never got the vaccine. She lives a lowly life and basically become the ladymaid of a woman whose son is a total a*****e, and also someone Sebastian, the Erik-like figure, hates.
Sebastian's not deformed, but his reputation was ruined when the b*****d child born of him and a whore is raped by the same man who torments Sarah. Sebastian thought of the b*****d child as a daughter (the girl is twelve) and seeks revenge by getting in a brawl with this man. It only turns to shame Sebastian and he flees to Venice to try and get revenge.
Sarah and her lady and son in the meantime travel to Venice for something. Sebastian becomes enthralled with Sarah and invites her to a masque ball (the ONLY time he wears a white mask) and both end up lusting for one another.
Long story short it's got few similarities and just ends up being smut with a plot. It's a nice story and has minor hints at PotO. But it's certainly not a phanphic of total rip-off.
And it's not for kids, either. XD

PetiteLotte Sorry for my ignorance but... what is Wal-mart? sweatdrop Not in America? S'okay. Wal-Mart is a country-wide large chain of stores/groceries/whatever that have generally low prices. They're also rumored to be taking over the world, but don't say anything otherwise the old people that greet you at the entrance will come get you.

it sounds like a rip-off of Phantom. Close, but just diffrent enough so that the author won't be accused of plagerism!
