Palm fronds rustled softly as a small breeze drifted through. It was nippy, but not freezing, an overall pleasant evening for the beach in February. The moon shone down bright, and only a few small clouds obscured the inky black sky with its multitude of stars. The beach was illuminated in the eerie, gentle blueish white light, and the moon had cast a wonderful reflection of itself on the water. All seemed still upon the sand, but it was a stark opposite of the tide pools, and the deep water beyond that. The ocean teemed with life, as it always had.
Though it would be a horror for many land dwellers, a certain seathi loved to go out onto the reef in the evening. Jackknife reveled in the night life on the reef, watching small sharks and rays and reef squids go about their business, as well as the nocturnal fish species. Ever watchful, he made his way quietly through the water, and closer to shore. The lagoon and tidepools were wonderful to visit when the tide wasn't coming in or out, and he loved to go and see what was to be seen. The top of his head rose above the water, and he huffed softly at the sight of the sky above him. Such a lovely night. He loved it when he could see the stars.

A tall, dark stallion was lumbering his way down toward the shoreline, a look of purpose on his face. Not one but two large pairs of white wings were folded on his back, almost glowing in the low light of the evening. He stuck out like a sore thumb, and if the little Seathi was looking his way, there was no way he could be missed.
Auster had never been to the ocean before. With nothing else to do, and a lot on his mind to forget, it had taken him a few days to make up his mind that he would go there, and then a few more days to reach it. He supposed he could have flown, but his wing was just newly healed, and he didn't want to chance it with a long flight. Travelling on land wasn't that bad anyway--when he didn't run into ground horses anyway.
So here he was, at the ocean. He wasn't that impressed. It wasn't much different from a large lake. Frowning a bit, he stood on the shore, looking around.

Jack caught sight of him almost immediately, even over the rocky crags of the tide pools, which were on the right side of the beach. To the left of the stallion, the shore stretched off along the coast line. The appearance of the stallion was quite shocking to the little seathi, who could only stare for a time. Even at a distance, the land-walker seemed massive to him. It had been a long time since he had seen one at all, since they mostly seemed to be about during the day. He was sure he had never seen one with wings either, and he was filled to the brim with curiosity, and maybe a bit of intimidation. He knew such a creature couldn't hurt him, but he wondered if the winged land dweller would acknowledge him if he called out.
Jackknife carefully pulled himself into a sitting position on a half-submersed rock, able to sit up about halfway out of the water. He could dive back in if need be. Steeling himself, he whinnied a soft greeting. It was a tiny sound, tinier than any noise a foal or usdia could make. He was sure it would be audible on the quiet beach though, and he waited tensely to see if the other soquili would look his way.
