Well we have this old computer laying around, and I was thinking of disassembling it. Could I use any of the parts? (Are there any gears, or anachronistic parts inside?)

Mostly there are wired and circut boards inside. But you could make circut board jewelry out of them, I've seen it done pretty well.

Yeah circuit jewlery is cool
I tried to make a circuit board hair piece with TV remote parts back when I was into cyberpunk.
Conceptually it was very cool.

If it has a sliding cd tray there'll be gears in that, but they'll be tiny and plastic. Not really what you're looking for.

Only if you count little bits of plastic covered copper wire to be a useful material. But buying a whole box of electrical cord would get you more for the same amount of work.
Then again you could always paint the thing into something steam punk looking. If you haven't seen steampunk computers already I can find you the site.

Unfortunately, the sort of gears we would want to use for cosmetic purposes are not to be found in modern technology. You may find some interesting parts and learn something about the construction of computers, but anything you would find would be more cyberpunk than steam. You're more likely to find gears in old timepieces. Make sure everyone's fine with the loss of that computer first, though. xD
