Barnaby could only do so many indoor lunches before he got tired of routine. There was something extremely stifling to be forced to sit at a crowded table, surrounded by hundreds of other students in a similar position. True, lunch period was supposed to be a time of camaraderie and swapped stories (as well as some hastily finished homework) but the redhead didn't have it in him to sit there for so long. Once he was done eating he got bored, and when he got bored Bad Things happened. Take last week for example. He hadn't meant to hit the girl in the back of the head with a crust. She just happened to get in the way!
But that was why he was out here, perched on a picnic bench, with his homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Out here he could eat without having to worry about his second period English teacher breathing down his neck. She had never really forgiven him after his essay on Hamlet. (It wasn't his fault that he thought the guy just needed some meds!) But he could even stay out here long after the bell had rung, providing nobody found him.
It was the perfect get away.
With a comic book he had "borrowed" from the library perched on one knee, Barnaby flipped casually through the pages, stopping whenever a particular picture caught his eye. Though the colour may fade and the books may get tattered, Batman comics would always be cool.

Dani had gotten used to having people to sit by regularly at lunch, and when they were suspiciously absent, it kind of put her in a bad mood. She'd made the best of it, eating her lunch quickly, and had disappeared outside to enjoy the fresh air for a bit. She had her watched timed so that she could make it back in to get to class on time, so she wasn't very concerned. There were groups of girls walking around, gossiping in tightly knit groups, and she wondered what that was like, briefly.
Dani didn't have a lot of female friends. Actually, she didn't have a lot of friends period, which continued to baffle and amaze her as the days went on. Still, she didn't feel like she was missing too much... girls like those ones never had anything important or meaningful to say, right?
She had Parker for important and meaningful conversation. Parker, her... boyfriend? Despite the age gap, she considered him her boyfriend. If the feeling wasn't mutual, he'd better work on remedying that just about as soon as possible, or she would kill him. Well, not kill him, but make his life miserable in the ways that only a teenage girl could.
Rounding a corner, she glanced over a park bench, registering that there was someone there before moving on. It took her three more steps to realize that she recognized the someone, and she brightened, striding over confidently.
Without ceremony, she threw herself on the bench next to Barnaby, crossing one leg over the top of the other and bracing her hands against her knee. "Hi, Barnaby!"
As usual, she was full of pep and cheer. And staring longingly at his sandwich. "You make me want to beat you up and steal your lunch on a regular basis, you know."

Barnaby probably wouldn't have been all that surprised to hear that Dani had a boyfriend. He had always thought of her – always being the small period of time he'd known her – as someone who once they had made up their minds, nothing could change them. Thus, it was only natural that the bluenette had found herself a boyfriend. She'd probably even decided they were together before the boy of her choice knew himself.
But Dani was friendly and honest and one of the nicest people that the redhead knew in the whole school, which pretty much made them friends. It would have been virtually impossible to hate her, and Barnaby had a good eye for impossible odds. If you could spot them you didn't have to set yourself up for failure, which was a fair good thing in his mind. The less failures the better.
"You can have half if you want," he replied, only glancing up from his comic book for a second. It took him a minute longer than usual to realize that she just threatened to beat him up before he said, "And you couldn't beat me up you know, Dani."
Like a girl could beat him up. He had Man Training.

"I could definitely beat you up," Dani returned easily, rolling her eyes at him. Barnaby was a guy, sure, but she'd taken on a lot nastier than him. Between youma and Negaverse agents, though she'd admittedly generally had help with the Negaverse, she figured Barnaby Price would be easy pickings. It would hurt his manly ego for her to put it that way (and saying she could definitely beat him up wouldn't?) so it was a good thing she couldn't tell him about her alter-ego, Sailor Magellan.
She jiggled her foot, shaking her head slightly as she returned to an earlier part of the conversation. "And no thanks. I already ate. So, why didn't you sit with me today?"
It wasn't the accusing tone of a slighted female, or even a mildly irritated friend. It was just curiosity. Had he and Grayson gotten into a fight? He didn't seem to have a problem with her, so she assumed it was something between the two of them. Well, unless Barnaby was just feeling antisocial. She could understand that.
Not that it was really working for him, considering here she was, but whatever.

"Could not," Barnaby shot back as easily as if they were in second grade. "I've had training. I'm like the Karate Kid, only without the cool headband." Jude had given him enough black eyes that he liked to think he could handle himself. Of course, he didn't know that his second favourite bluenette also had a secret identity. Had he known he probably would have insisted on accompanying her everywhere she went to make sure she didn't get into trouble. Dani was definitely one of those girls who got themselves into heaps of trouble. He just knew it.
Nodding absently when she said she already ate – more sandwich for him – he flipped ahead a few pages in his comic and paused when he came to a particular scene. The redhead made a sort of amused noise and tilted the book to one side, grinning. Man the dialogue in these books were crazy sometimes. It took him a minute to realize that Dani had asked him a question, and he gave her his typical one-shoulder shrug. "I didn't see you. It was crowded. Besides, it's a nice day. Is Grayson slacking off again?"
He looked up from his comic then, watching for her reaction. She always seemed to know more about his co-worker than he did – surprise surprise – and would probably know where the black haired teen had wandered off to today. Perhaps he, too, had been at school and Barnaby had just missed him.

"I will prove to you that I can beat you up," Dani promised, arching a brow at him. She didn't know how, where, or why, but Barnaby Price wasn't going to get away thinking he could best her at... much of anything, really. Except maybe peeing standing up. She was not a pro at that, and really had no desire to be.
Unless it became some sort of freakish competition. Even then, probably not.
She was temporarily distracted by mention of Grayson, and sighed loudly. He was definitely a slacker. He was probably the worst kind of slacker, the one who would barely glide through high school with passing marks and neglect to go to college at all. She wouldn't be surprised if he worked at Larry's Pizza forever and was content with that, actually. Grayson was the kind of guy who would look at her with doe eyes and say that money didn't buy happiness, as if that was some kind of defense against getting a real education and job.
Guys like Grayson made her want to pull her hair out at the roots. She liked him, but seriously. He was never going to get a respectable girlfriend -- errrr, boyfriend -- that way.
"Grayson is being Grayson," she said flatly, lifting her hands and shaking her head. "I don't think anything could make him stop slacking off except maybe if you threatened to starve him."
The boy did love his food.

....
The redhead stared at Dani like she'd just grown a second head. "You'll prove to me that you could beat me up? How?" He was torn between being genuinely curious and seriously amused. It wasn't that he thought the bluenette couldn't beat some people up – and by some people he meant other girls – but she was definitely out of her league. Did she honestly think that she could beat up a guy (and a guy who'd had training from Jude at that)? Really?
Maybe they just needed to settle this over an arm wrestling contest or something. He didn't really want to hurt her if she was being serious.
Nodding at the mention of Grayson, Barnaby could only be secretly pleased that all was right in the world. The day the black-haired teen started actively showing interest in something he would probably think the apocalypse was coming. If he was lazing around at home then he didn't have to fear for his immortal soul. Dani may not have been amused, but Barnaby certainly seemed pleased.
"If you see him before I do can you ask him if I can borrow one of his English books? I dunno what happened to mine. Dog probably ate it or something."

"Sure, I'll ask about the english book. Actually," she'd pulled out her cellphone, was busily texting with the inherent skill of a teenage girl who had done this a few times. She didn't even need to look at the keypad, and instead, was giving Barnaby a fondly amused look. "There, texted."
Snapping her phone shut, she leaned over, all concepts of personal space lost on her. Had Dani been a different type of girl, one might have thought she was putting the moves on Barnaby. She certainly wasn't, because she was quite happy with Parker even if their relationship was progressing slower than anything in the world, but to the average passerby, it didn't seem that way. That was one of the disadvantages of being a competitive girl with no concept of other people's space bubbles.
"And yes, I will totally prove it to you. Any way, any day." She wasn't entirely certain what Barnaby would propose, but she wasn't afraid to take a few bumps to prove a point. "Just name a time and place. I'm a lot stronger than I look."
Perhaps it was her ego getting the better of her, as it generally did when the thought of anyone besting her at much of... anything, came up. But Dani was being completely serious.
And her face showed she was totally serious business.

Well that was quick. "You have his number then? Can I have it?" Asking Dani for another guy's number was kind of weird, but Barnaby had get to find a suitable segue in any of his conversations with his co-worker. It wasn't like he could just say 'hey man, can I get your number?' Okay maybe he could but there were certain lines he was trying not to cross with Grayson in case he made the other teen uncomfortable. They were only at stage two of the bro relationship.
But that didn’t mean he couldn't mooch Grayson's number off Dani. You never knew when it could come in handy.
It was probably lucky that the redhead was as oblivious to any kind of potentially flirty situations as Dani was. All he took her invasion of his personal bubble for was a challenge, and he responded by holding his ground. A little puffed up chest, tilted chin, and he was totally ready to take her on. (Hopefully nobody was snapping pictures of this to use as blackmail.)
"Dude, Dani, you couldn't even beat me in an arm wrestling contest. I'm sure you're a lot stronger than you look but like.... really? You're a girl, come on."

"You two haven't exchanged numbers? I got his right away." Looking like she certainly thought Barnaby was slow on the uptake, Dani opened her phone again, rattled off the number. It was lucky indeed no one was spying on them for blackmail; as Barny added Grayson to his address book, it likely looked much more like Dani was passing on her own contact information to the red head. Totally awkward, so it was a good thing no one from Meadowview was around to see it.
Dani could spread rumors just as well as the next girl, but she hated being the center of them. She would stomp anyone who started a rumor about her, no questions asked.
Her phone disappearing once more, her pretty lips peeled back into a semi-snarl. It was one thing for her to say she was stronger than she looked, it was totally another for Barnaby to say it in that tone with such skepticism in his face. He was in need of a serious ego p***k. "A girl who could totally arm wrestle you into the ground. Seriously, Barnaby. You've got like, chicken arms."
Dani's arms were quite well toned. That happened when you climbed rock walls for fun. Her legs were also in awesome shape, a side effect of her regular runs. In fact, she was just in pretty amazing shape.
Clearly Barnaby was a fool for underestimating her.

"That's because you're a girl." And Dani. With those two facts combined, she was a practically unstoppable force in the realm of men. Thankfully, she seemed to be on Barnaby's side – for the most part anyways – which meant that now he had Grayson's phone number. Now he could call his co-worker and remind him to be on time. Huzzah.
The redhead's eyebrows shot up then Dani's facial expression changed, still entirely too sceptical about the whole thing. He had been willing to let her off with a warning, but naturally that changed when she decided to say he had chicken arms. She wanted to go there? Fine, he would so go there. But first—
"I do not have chicken arms! And even if I did have skinny arms, they're still bigger than yours!" For once, being held back a year had actually been good for him, though at the time, arm-wrestling with a teenage girl hadn’t exactly been top of the benefits list. "You think you can arm wrestle me into the ground? Then let's go! Right here, right now!"
He settled on the opposite side of the picnic table and extended his arm. This was war.

Settling herself across from him, Dani gave him another arch look, flexing her hand as she positioned herself. She hadn't arm wrestled... well, ever. But how hard could it be? Definitely not hard. And sure, Barnaby had nicely toned arms and all, but she didn't see him hauling around his entire body weight on the rock wall two to three times a week. Truth be told, she had no idea what Barny did in his free time except play games on his cellphone and take care of his bike, but she was willing to bet he didn't bench press it or anything.
So, she figured she had more than a reasonable shot at beating him. Actually, it didn't really occur to her that she wouldn't; she was already envisioning his shocked expression, already preparing to gloat about it for weeks when she beat him.
Fitting her palm snugly against his, she smiled, all sugar and candy. "On the count of three?"

The very thought of hauling his body weight up and down a rock wall was enough to put Barnaby to sleep. All you had to do was climb up, ring the bell, and then climb back down. Sure some of the walls were challenging but it wasn't like they dropped rocks on you while you were climbing or let poisonous spiders crawl down. Then maybe it would have been worth doing more than once. As it stood, the redhead had had his fill of rock climbing.
And no, he definitely didn't bench press his bike. He didn't love it that much.
In the heat of the moment it was easy to forget that he was locking hands with a girl – the first girl since his last girlfriend in grade nine – and Barnaby put on his Srs Biz face. "You can count us in." The counter always got a bit of an advantage, didn't they? He'd let her have it. After all, he wasn't entirely trying to crush her hopes and dreams.
Just, you know, squish them a little. (Hopefully her boyfriend wouldn't beat him up).
