It was odd, being a Tarajali. Learning from her brother, Enzi, was odd too. Getting used to her longer limbs was odd. But the oddest thing of all wasn't something about HER. It was who she wasn't with quite as often.
The oddest thing about growing up, she had decided, was being away from Set so much.
She fretted about him, worried about him. He wasn't quite old enough to begin his own training yet, so he was still with the Mlisha. He was safe enough, from outside forces. But...she worried something might set him off. That he would see one shadow too many, that someone would push him too far...She loved her friend, but Tas knew just how unbalanced his mind was. The crimson lioness sighed and sat down at the spring, resting after a lesson with her brother.
What would happen now?

Pride life was...well, it was still a little odd for Laini. But he did rather like it. No worries about his safety. And he got to help watch after the little ones. He liked cubs, with their energy and hopes and light. He was also glad for the Mfuma of the pride.
They'd been the ones to patch up the real light of his life. He'd not expected to find Caellegh. Not at all. But he'd found her, and she'd let him into her heart. He was still respectful of her, of course! It just wouldn't do to make her mad at him.
He made his way to the spring, to rest for a bit and to clean the blood from his muzzle. He didn't often hunt, but there weren't many Msasi in the pride yet, so he helped out when he was needed. He blinked at the crimson adolescent already there. Ah! He recognized her.
"Good day, Miss Taswira. You look like you've something on your mind."

Tas blinked and looked over and up. Oh! One of the new Mlisha! She smiled nervously. If she remembered right, he was nice. But she was never very good around others. And there was no Set to prod her into being more social (since he disliked dealing with others more than she was scared of saying something wrong). Set...
"J-just...r-realizing how strange it is to grow up." She stretched a leg out. "I don't mind the growing part...but..." Should she tell him? Perhaps she should. He was a Mlisha, maybe he could keep an eye on Set for her?
"My best friend, h-he's not very old yet. And uhm...He's not all right in the head. I'm scared someone might do something to set him off. And...I don't want him to hurt himself or others."

Laini tilted his head, then nodded. "Ah...no wonder you're worried. Let me guess...you were the one making sure nothing happened right?" He smiled at her. "That's a very noble thing to do, Miss Taswira. Who is your friend? Perhaps I can do something to help?"
He didn't like seeing others troubled so, and if he could do something to ease her worries, than he would try. She seemed a nice girl, if a bit shy.

Tas nodded. "I knew how...to keep him calm." She looked more than a little embarrassed. "I-it's not that n-noble. I'm just looking out for my friend." It was nice to know that someone thought well of her, though!
"You want to help?" She perked up immediately. "Thank you! His name is Set. He's one of Miss Tumaini's cubs."

She was a modest one. Shy and timid. It was...an odd thing to see, in a pride like this. He'd let her have her insistence. When she said the name, Laini couldn't help but be surprised.
It was odd that she knew Set. He remembered the cub. Large for his age, anti-social, and...well, like Taswira had said, Set wasn't very well balanced in the head. "I know of him. I've seen him, usually away from the other cubs, stalking the shadows."

Tas smiled sadly. "Set doesn't like the shadows. He thinks they're in league with the demons. I used to place myself so he would see fewer shadows, and reassure him." She sighed. "I hope he gets old enough to join me as a Tarajali soon."

The poor girl. Laini pat one of her paws with one of his own. "Things will be fine. He will grow up, and you two can be together again. Until then..." He chuckled. "I can look after him for you." He grinned. "After all, what shadow in their right mind would attack others while a big lug like me was around?" Laini was well aware of his size, and the impression people usually got from him because of it.

Tas couldn't help but giggle. "Thank you. I can only hope Set will think that way." She loved her pride...but she loved her best friend too. The thought of having to choose between either because Set had done something...She couldn't bear it. She couldn't bear the thought of life without one or the other. "Your help...it means a great deal to me."

Laini gave her a reassuring look. "I'm sure he will. You two are best friends, yes? Then once he knows it's for you, he might try his best to...to 'be good'." He chuckled, a bit embarrassed. "I'm glad I can be of help." And...he'd gotten her to talk without being too shy! "So...have I put your mind at ease?"

"Yes..." Taswira smiled, the expression reaching her eyes. "Set is my best friend in the whole world. He...he understands me like no one else." He understood how much she wanted to make her mother proud of her. He understood her little quirks, and how to nudge her out of her shell, despite his own. "You have." She blinked then. "You know...I don't remember your name. I know you're one of the new Mlisha. But I cannot seem to remember your name."

The Mlisha recognized the tone in her voice. So...to her, he was more than just her best friend. He'd keep a very good eye on Set for her than. "My name is Laini-moto. I'm not worried that you don't remember it. After all, you're a Tarajali. You're a busy girl."

"Thank you again, Laini-moto." She stood and stretched. "Well...I'd best be going." Taswira gave him a thankful look. "My mind is at ease now, knowing my friend is in the paws of someone who will not look down on him." And she turned and started for where she would meet up with her mother. Yes. Her mind was at ease now.

Laini watched the girl go, then turned to clean the blood off his muzzle. The Mwezi had good cubs. He hoped one day that he could raise cubs as caring as that girl had been.
