Keara Abernethy was on a military base for the second time in her life. She had left for a reason in the first place. It was July, mid-summer, and hot and humid as no other. Shifting from side to side as the Humvee headed to the very backwaters of the base. Literally. Her white shirt was soaked from no air conditioning in the Humvee. The thing jolted to a stop. Slung forward, she braced her hands quickly in front of her on the seat before her. Her Aviators had slid down her nose a bit, so with her finger she pushed the gold rimmed black lenses up.
"Here!" Head of military spoke to her in his too many cigarette voice. Like nails on a chalkboard, but she had to settle for the chills down her spine. Exiting, she looked around the area. It was just dirt. And a few Southern style houses. She groaned. This would not be fun. "We, well I, am giving you the ex-captain's house...Biggest one....Conditioner broken, you can handle it...This way."
He already had her two suitcases in each burly hand. Keara followed him begrudgingly. He somehow got the door open and hot dusty stuffy air greeted them. Right no air.
"Thank you Joe. I can take it from here."
She felt the dirty look he sent her. Head of military was Joe and Joe was her mother's brother, her uncle. He had said something about addressing him with his title. But she was her mother's daughter and thought if more fun to bug him. "I'll leave the keys on the table by the door here." And with that he shut the door with her in a dead man's house until the 7 members left of this special team came to her. Damn.
