"WAAAAAUGH!"
It was an entirely unmistakable sound. Some man somewhere had done something stupid that, reasonably enough, ended with a very unfortunate consequence. In this case, Nathan had been unwittingly leaning on a newly-painted cement lamppost stand. There was now a wide white line down the back of his jacket and to the seat of his pants.
"Oh, God DAMN it!"

Oh dear. This was bad. Xai and Evari had gone out to buy more paint, and some of this 'aspirin' stuff that Xai's researching had shown helps with these odd head pains she'd been getting ever since Evari had discovered this new talent of hers, and while they had made it to the store together and found the paint and purchased it together? Somehow Evari had managed to slip from her hand and out of her sight between the trip from the cashier to the door. What? Where had she gone?!
"...Evari?" Xai blinked and looked around, a very confused look on her face. She'd never lost Evari before! Her grip on her hand was usually so secure! She walked to the alleyway on the other side of the store, peeking around the corner for signs of her little glowing daughter. "Evari?" ...Nothing...not even a glimmer of red light.
This was bad, right? Children didn't just disappear in thin air. The Ursontaean frowned and played nervously with her hair, about to try looking somewhere else when she heard a rather loud, angry cry. That man sounded like something had just annoyed him! Maybe Evari was over there! She turned on her heel and hurried in the direction she'd heard the angry voice coming from, skidding to a stop only to find a man and...no Evari...augh! This was so frustrating! Xai sighed. "Um...excuse me?" Maybe this man had seen her daughter!

Was it really too much to ask to have just one day go off without a hitch? Really. He was just waiting for the bus so he could go home and nap. It had been two days since his last trip to bed and he could really, really use it.
But no.
He was covered in paint and some woman had approached him. While covered in paint.
"Mm?" he asked sleepily, turning to face the woman. This displayed his white stripe to the road, and he couldn't help but feel rather self-conscious.
'Ignore her' the voice in his head insisted 'Get home and be free with me.' Nathan simply grimaced and left one eye closed.

"Um...well...you sounded like something was bothering you so I thought..." Xai frowned, looking around nervously. "I thought maybe my daughter was over here..." That meant she wasn't! Damnit! The girl sighed and crossed her arms across her abdomen, holding her elbows and turning to the man again.
"Her name is Evari...perhaps you saw her? She's a little girl with blue hair and..and she glows red. And she's wearing bright colors and a tutu and...I...I can't find her! I've never lost her before!"

This woman had lost her child?! Good lord! That wasn't good! This was a public road! Nathan felt himself awaken some and looked around him. No, no glowing children.
"I'm sorry, I...I haven't...where would she go?!"

Where indeed! "I-I don't know! She was holding my hand and then she was just gone! She likes um...music...and bright colors. And noise. Lots of noise. And places she can..sh-she just got new paints!" So maybe if they found a trail of paint somewhere they could follow it? Oooh Xai had no idea what to do!
"Will you help me find her?" Xai looked desperate now, tugging at her hair and looking every which way. She spotted a bright blue something and gasped with delight only to find it was just a tiny trashcan. Augh! Where did she go!?

"Yeah, yeah!" Nathan reasoned. Well, ********, if he didn't then who would? People were jackasses nowadays.
"Alright, um. You head that way, and I'll go this way. She can't have gotten TOO far, right?"

"She could have." Xai frowned and looked in the direction the man pointed. Wait...the man...she didn't even know his name. She blinked and paused, suddenly holding out her hand. "I am Xaisholimikoki! Or Xai...it's nice to meet you! Thank you so much for helping me!" She didn't know how but she would find a way to thank him for it later. A simple thank you just wouldn't do!

"I'm Nathan. Now hurry up and get going! If she really can move as fast as you say, I don't like the idea of her running so close to a busy street!"
Of course, it wasn't his kid and it wasn't his problem, but if he saw a little girl bowled over by a minivan he was pretty sure he'd never be able to forgive himself. He headed down the direction he had chosen and began to open shop doors, the first stop being a bakery. Arghh, competition.
"Have you seen a small glowing girl?"

It didn't matter where Nathan or even Xai went, everywhere they looked there was no sign of Evari. No one had seen a glowing child, no one had heard a girl crying, there were no lonely children here. Not even lonely adults until Xai stumbled upon a place where the men looked at her funny and even asked if they could bring her to their place for coffee. Honestly! Didn't they know she had a little girl to find?! She didn't have time to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with someone!
Eventually she returned to the store she had just left from, stopping and looking around. Had Nathan returned yet? There was no sign of her daughter anywhere! She didn't notice the faint glow shining through the glass door of the store she'd just left from.
