Yay! Something great happened!

Okay here's the story:

I always go to Marathon, FL for winter break. Since we always had a dog, we would drive to Florida because he couldn't be left at home 'cause he was sickly and old.

However, he was put to sleep a few months ago, so now we can fly!

But the problem was, would we be able to take my bird, Pide, on the plane?

So we called the airlines and I was so sure they wouldn't let us bring her when my mom comes home and tells me:

"Guess what? Pidey can go with us on the plane!"

YAY!!! I'm so happy!

Discuss: pet situations and how they turn out, or just chat!

It sounds like you're a little too happy that your dog's dead. It's scaring me, to be honest. eek

I'm not sure what size of bird yours is, but I would check with your veterinarian to discuss where on the plane the bird is staying and if it can handle the trip. If your bird's not going to be on your lap, you need to find out what conditions it's going to be in. Many luggage cabins are not heated like the passenger cabins, so the bird could freeze to death. Also, smaller birds are at quite a risk of dying in frightetning situations (such as being in a noisy, frightening airplane or airport full of strangers). I know our vet told us that parakeets die if they stop breathing, because they have no diaphragm to make them start again like we have. I'm not sure if any other birds do have diaphragms. Either way, discuss the risks of your bird's health with a trusted vet first. It's true that many birds enter the country by plane, but cargo inspectors easily find entire loads of them dead from the experience. Make sure you know what you're getting your bird into first.

We had to take my cat on an airplane once, and I will never do it again. The poor thing was frantic, and it got airsick all over it's carrier, only the evil flight attendants wouldn't let me take him out to clean him up so I had to sneak him into the bathroom and give him a bath in the sink. gonk
My poor baby.

The worst pet situation I've been in was when we went camping over thanksgiving, and we had to take our new dog, who weighed about fifty pounds at the time. He sat on my lap the whole drive!! gonk hehe
