On the weekends, Ladon was free. Free from schoolwork, free from home to do as he pleased, and free from the prying, judgmental eyes of his fellow classmates. He didn’t have to worry about what he wore down to the color of his socks, how he slouched (he stood proper whenever he could but slouched with all the other kids to fit in), and could devote his energies to anything aside from what he liked, and what Ladon liked most of all were certain things that were both pleasant to his eyes and his sense of taste. In short, he liked cute stuff, but not mainstream ‘cute’ with the ugly neon pinks and revolting ensembles some poor hippo or koala had to wear. No, he liked old fashioned cute, with small vests, a little bow, or sometimes a simple ribbon on a giraffe that someone had taken the time to craft. The best places for these finds was at the flea markets and antique stores.

In a parking lot, people reserved plots and set up their wares. Old china cabinets, painting of flowers and ships, and a mountain of tacky goods. Passing by a sea-shell lamp that looked as if it was turning orange, he found a older woman under a shade, sitting and paused to look at a shelf holding 3 little dolls and one duck. The duck was a faded white, with her head down and a blue bonnet tied about her slender neck. He couldn’t help think she looked British, and picked her up to examine her. As of yet, he didn’t have any ducks, and he thought a British one would add some culture the other animals of his room were yet to be exposed to. Delilah the Duck sounded fitting, and he checked her stitching to make sure she wasn’t going to disintegrate on his way to his house.

Her body was soft, both with being worn and from a plush fabric, but he noticed little bald spots from where she was thinning. “You’re loosing your feathers.” He commented, unable after all these years to not talk to inanimate objects. He was meeting her for the first time after all.

If there was one thing Ellie had never quite understood, it was flea markets. Yet her dad, when he had the spare time, was always going to them to try and find good "bargains." It really was a crap shoot when it came to her dad's schedule, and for once, he was able to free up a weekend. In all his wisdom, he decided to bring his daughter with him to the local flea market.

Ellie hoped there were some wrenches there. Or something mechanical. Maybe some sort of watch that she could take apart later for her own amusement? Once the girl and her father (both with a matching set of blonde hair) arrived, they parted ways. Mr. Spectre would look at everything in search of a bargain, where as the highschooler would only look at a small percentage of the merchandise available.

She loomed through the plots, weaving in and out of the aisles with her hands hitched behind her head. Where many would look carefully, the girl's golden eyes just lingered long enough to judge whether there was anything remotely interesting in a booth. The tomboy had managed to make it through three aisles without finding a single thing of interest. And then she saw him.

Some boy she could have sworn she saw at Meadowview. Where specifically, she didn't know. There were way too many students at Meadowview last she checked. Being the energetic soul she was, she rather easily bounded up close to him and loomed over to see what he was looking at. "Ya find somethin' interestin', kid? Or ya jus' like talkin' to yerself?" she asked, only vaguely catching a hint of this boy's voice. If he was to turn around, he'd be greeted by a rather wide grin from the tall girl.

While he was checking Delilah’s condition, he was working out a personality for her. Her nerves must have gotten to her to make her go bald in places, probably with having no ducklings to look over. A poor little lady without much to do aside from take walks and pine for children. In secret, he had a rather vivid imagination when it came to these animals, and since he grew older, could come up with some rather complicated life histories. It was one of the reasons why he got found of them quickly, and he was already holding the duck delicately with the conviction of someone who recognized what they were holding was something precious.

Lost in thought, he felt the chill of his personal space being invaded long before he saw the culprit, and his shoulders hitched and made his grip tense. Turning, he was faced with a bright smile and girl looming over him to cast a shadow over his smaller form. Just for her being there suddenly and this close made his jump back and press his back against the shelf, shaking the three dolls that still sat on them. He scrambled to keep the three from falling, not found of dolls but not wanting to break one either.

“I was just looking!” The sudden surprise made his voice high-pitched and thin, and he threw the duck back onto the shelf. The stuffed animal hit the back of the shelf and then flopped down on her side. The thud from her impact caused him to wince, but he stopped himself from reaching out and straightening her back out to check if she was okay.

Sorry. Sorry. SORRY! I didn’t mean to nearly break your neck! He was going to stuffed animal hell for this!

Back to the girl, he looked up at the behemoth and pretended to lean back in cool pose, failed, and instead stuffed his hands in his pockets as he stood in her shadow. “I was just, looking and all. I have a sister.” He did, but the duck wasn’t for her.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 29, 2010 6:15 pm

The girl continued to grin, watching in amusement as the little boy practically squirmed. She remained standing there at her full height, hands hitched behind her head. In a rather indifferent tone, she offered "Dude, you sound like y'just sh*t yerself." This was the closest thing he'd probably get to sympathy about the situation.

It was obvious that Ellie wasn't into girly things, especially based off how she was dressed. Skater shorts, a couple chains hanging from her belt loop and a torn shirt were the outfit she had haphazardly tossed together for the day. Her eyes looked over the merchandise, spotting 3 dolls and a duck toy. All which screamed out "LAAAAAAAAME" in her mind. The boy sputtered out his excuses in a voice that sounded like he had just hit puberty (which was entirely a possibility from her perspective).

"Chill kid!" she eventually exclaimed. She looked over the duck toy from where she was standing and offered conversationally "So yer sister's inta frilly gay sh*t like that? She got a birthday comin' up or something? Must be a drag bein' expected t'buy this sorta crap fer a girl. It'd be like gettin' a guy t'buy underwear fer some complete stranger-girl."

Ellie, now complete with unfiltered thought action. She really needed to start learning to think before she spoke.

Her shoulders rolled into a shrug before she spoke again, addressing the reason why she approached in the first place. "So, I'm right in thinkin' y'go t'Meadowview, right?"

It was making the term loose to call this person a girl. His mother, a faculty member from Crystal, was one with a clear definition for manners and proper speech. Already he could hear her voice listing everything that was wrong. Lower your hands properly to the sides. Stand straight! You’ll ruin your back. Do you want a hump? Don’t garble your words. Speak properly. And lastly, and something Ladon would have to agree on. What is it that you’re wearing?! It was defiantly NOT cute. Many girls had the talent of dress to bring about their natural womanly charms. Ladon wasn’t even going to entertain the thought that this girl had any of these. The Be a Lady train obviously left her behind at the station. He couldn’t help picking apart her attire. Being with his sister, he knew what dresses were available to girls, but after this girl spoke the way she did and appeared looking like that, he was finding it hard to picture her in a nice, baby-blue dress.

Rubbing his eyes, he gave up on trying to press an imaginary dress on this girl. It seemed even the imaginary one didn’t want to go anywhere near her. “Yeah, she has a birthday coming up, and -” He frowned. “It’s not frilly, gay, sh..- Her taste is not gay.” SURE, for him to buy a stuffed animal was considered gay for most people, but that wasn’t the point. There was a definite charm in his hobby, and he wasn’t going to stand for someone badmouthing what he liked. Well, what his sister liked.

Turning, he picked up the duck, feeling that after that comment, he had a duty to take sides. Duck and Ladon vs the girl with no sense of fashion or charm. Turning, he looked up (HE HATED LOOKING UP) at her. “Yes, I go to Meadowview. I’m a Sophomore there.” He made sure to speak his words carefully and clearly just to point out to her that it could be done.

It was a bit odd for him to be defending his sister in such a fashion, but then again, the blonde really didn't have much to compare to. She had no siblings of her own, so she never really bothered to figure out how strong that sibling-bond could be. Not like it would have made a difference in her everyday life.

"Y'must be a pretty nice brother t'pretend that it's not frilly. Seriously, unless yer sister is in elementary still, I'd say she needs t'grow up a bit." Ellie had been the girl who grew up with Hot Wheels, not dolls or stuffed animals. Stuffed animals were lame, end of story. No amount of arguing could change such an opinion.

At the mention of which year the dark-haired boy was in, she snickered. Not wanting to leave the boy in the dark, she even added in comment:

"Wow, yer a runt fer a sophomore even!"

Tact. Ellie had none.

"Well kiddo, I'm a junior. Name's Ellie Spectre!" She tugged both of her hands away from behind her head and reached out her right hand for a handshake. It was only proper to shake hands when you first introduced yourself to someone. Even if you had just been insulting the boy's height and taste in plush animals.

The remark hit him square in the gut, and he felt a mix of bitterness and shame while holding the stuffed animal. Yes, he should grow up. Yes, no straight guy his age went out looking for Bonnet-wearing, British Fowl (or gave them personalities). Yes, he should take all these things, throw them in a box, and donate them to a local charity. He just couldn’t. He LIKED them, from the lives he created for them, to the early childhood memories he had. He defended a few of the animals on the playground as a kid, got kicked for them, that turning around and tossing them out seemed that he could have just saved himself a lot of time and abuse. He could. Even now he could spare himself, but he didn’t want to. And since he couldn’t find any way around it, he’d just have to lie about it.

“Yeah, I guess she is really silly.” He was a traitor. The duck gave him a judgmental look from her beady, black eyes and he tugged her bonnet down over them.

If this girl couldn’t have pissed him off any more, she went as far as to call him a runt. A RUNT! DID SHE NOT HAVE ANY CLASS AT ALL?!

“I’m not a runt! I’m still growing! I could have a growth spurt any day now and grow taller than you.” He shot a finger at her head, to the skies even, as if he would just shoot up like a beanstalk tomorrow.

He hated Ellie Specter. She was a plush-hating, no-class, unladylike, grunt! He blamed both the parents and the doctors for not leaving her at the hospital when she was born. Starving wolves probably could have raised her into a better person.

Turning, he set the duck down and caught the older woman’s attention. She smiled at the purchase and naturally assumed he was getting it for a sibling. There was never much of a second thought that a boy was getting it for himself. She was just happy to sell it. “I’m sure you’re sister will love it.” The older lady handed the duck in a Walmart bag, giving him a soft, wrinkled smile.

With the purchase, he was free to run and leave Ellie. Still, she was in his way. “I’m Ladon Shepard, and I’m not a kid. You’re only one year older than me after all, right?” With that way of talking, she could have been held back.

He couldn’t place where he saw Ellie before. “Are you in any clubs? I don’t expect Home Ec to be one of them.”

Did this guy have no class? Rather than shake hands, he decided to have a hissy fit over his height, pointing his finger in a nearly accusatory manner at her. Obviously, there were some negative vibes here.

Though her expression remained relatively chipper, she leaned forward and shared a bit of advice with the runt. "First rule when y'meet someone. Y'shake their hand. Otherwise, yer bein' a rude son ov'a b*tch." She shrugged her shoulders slightly before standing up to her full height again, turning her body slightly so she was facing the entrance to the little plot. He already made his statement, so she wasn't going to offer her hand any longer. "I guess y'jus' prefer bein' a rude son ov'a b*tch then, Shepard."

The girl couldn't help but turn her head to face the elderly woman and give a small nod of apology. "Sorry 'bout the coarse language, m'am."

At the prompting about her activities at school, she grinned and turned back to the boy, her interest suddenly quadrupled. "Ain't in any clubs, but I live in th'auto shop and metal shop classes. They've got tools there that y'can't get unless y'got yer own professional car garage. Might as well use them while I've got access, right?" She laughed as if she said something funny. It wasn't a tiny meek laugh which some cute girl might have made, but a rather hearty one.

Ellie muffled her laughter before continuing on. "Maybe I've seen y'on the field before. My friend, Zuniga, he's on the soccer team. Y'on some sorta team, Shepard?" A runt like him probably wasn't on any sort of big team, like football, and he definitely wasn't on soccer (otherwise she would have already been quite familiar with him).

He didn’t take the hand because he didn’t feel like it. Someone calling him a runt really was the type of person he went shaking hands with. As far as it went, he was debating if he should be friendly with her in an effort to try and salvage whatever this was into at least a thin friendship, or just chalk it up to meeting someone else he didn’t much care for. As of yet, he was going for the latter.

“I’m on the track team.” He pointed out, as he didn’t have anything to say about metal shop and garages. Heavy machinery wasn’t really appealing to him. The idea of being in a dark room that was loud with welding and where plenty of tools could either fall on you or tear off a limb just wasn’t an environment he could feel comfortable in. He once tried tightening a facet at his house and his mother wound up coming over to check and turned the wrench several times more. He didn’t need that sort of humiliation practiced at school. His only real strength was in running.

“I haven’t talked to any of the guys from soccer. We just pass each other.” The track and soccer field were close by, and their coaches arranged their meetings so that their groups never had to fight over locker space or the showers. Since both required a lot of running, a few members of track had went to soccer and vice versa.

Since it wasn’t really going TOO bad, he held out his hand, but didn’t look directly at her. “Sorry, but calling someone a runt and their sister an elementary student is pretty shitty too.” Ladon wasn’t really the type to swear, and he really didn’t think Ellie should either, or at least not as much.

SO not a lady! She could take or leave the handshake, but he’d much prefer if it happened now after she called him on manners.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 30, 2010 3:10 pm

With a large grin, the tomboy easily took the kid's smaller hand in her own and shook. She was no lady when it came to her handshake, but that was strictly because she grew up shaking the hands of strong guys. In fact, her handshake was very strong, and perhaps a bit crushing to the unsuspecting. It was the silent guy code that meant "this person is respectable because they have a firm handshake." The two hands vigorously bounced up and down, largely due to Ellie's own energy.

When he called her out on her manners, she didn't even seem to fuss. "Yeah, I know" she said, almost beaming as she confessed such. Since she was already confessing one thing, she figured she could toss in another confession while she was at it. "And jus' so y'know... I tend t'call anyone that's shorter than me 'kid' or 'kiddo'...jus' a habit, Shepard." It was about this time she finally released his poor hand.

Finished up with the mild confessions (which honestly hadn't bothered her morals at all, she just said it because she could), she then rounded the conversation back to the subject of his sport. "So, track eh? Do ya do any of th'field events too, or are ya a strict runner?" There was a slight pause before she then added with a mischievous smile curling her lips "Are ya fast?" Hopefully poor Ladon realized how important his answer to that question would be. It would completely decide this girl's next series of actions.

Having only grown up with a sister, his handshakes were mindful of everyone else, and enough to just give a squeeze but easy to break off. There was really no reason for him to practice it, and little occasion where he had to suffer the abuse someone could put your hand through. It was almost too much not to turn to the side and start going limp just to get her to release, and he stood as his arm was rattled by it’s hinges. What was his hand was now numb and his shoulder had popped twice before she finally let go. Flexing his fingers, he stuffed his hand into his jean pocket, trying to keep himself from whimpering. If Ellie was trying to gather anything about his character from the handshake it was that he had all the merits of a wet noodle.

“I bet you call a lot of people kiddo.” Ellie was tall, and he wished there was a word that matched the same level of childishness that kid had for someone who was tall. Talley? Geezer? – Nothing came close. Whatever he did call he, he doubted she would care. Ellie was a faucet with a broken value. She just said what she wanted, but could be angry when no one showed her any manners. He saw this as very hypocritical, but knew that explaining it would be pointless. There was almost something to envy in Ellie in that she just went with the flow. If only he could be that relaxed.

When it was time to talk about track, he couldn’t help but grin. If there was one area he could be proud of and use as a way to reestablish himself as a guy, it was track. “Yeah, I’m fast. I’m actually a sprinter for the team, but they only just started putting me in long distance events.” He actually did better when running longer distances because all the fast runners burned out, but no one wanted slow and steady. People were impressed by the fast runners. The ones who could do record laps in seconds.

Whatever Ellie had in mind, it didn’t even register to the younger boy, who more or less was puffing up as he talked about his team.

PostPosted: Sat Jan 30, 2010 4:35 pm

The girl was no track star. She was an overall sort of athletic, but nothing polished or practiced about it. Ellie was able to take a hit, run a race in a decent time, and try her hardest at whatever task was given to her.

And right now, the girl had dangerous amounts of energy to burn.

At Ladon's statement, she nodded her head, acknowledging the fact lots of people had that same title as she had bestowed upon the boy. In fact, the only person she didn't give that title to who was shorter than her was her mother. You didn't call your Mom a kiddo in any lifetime. Ever.

Her mischievous smile, however, remained firmly upon her lips. She began to walk out of the booth to the narrow pathway, glancing back to make certain the boy was following her. Only once in the clearing, she announced her idea. "I wanna see how fast y'are, kiddo." There was a pause in her words where she offered the boy a hearty clapping of her hand on his shoulder. This was the sort of thing a tomboy did to encourage a friend to do something stupid.

"I'll race ya t'the north end parkin' zone. If y'get there first, I'll give ya five dollars. If I get there first, then I jus' get gloatin' rights." In all honesty, it was a win-win situation for the boy if he really thought about it. Though there was that issue of dignity if he lost. The girl's finger pointed out ahead towards the goal area, that smile remaining constant on her lips.

"How 'bout it, Shepard? Y'game?"

If it wasn’t for the grin, he might have thought she was just leaving, but something told him to go. Looking around, he slowly made his way out and awkwardly started to follow her away from the little squares of laid out carpets and tents to the little path between them. Since it was winter, a good many people weren’t taking their time to linger too long, and huddles in big coats and jackets, were looking carefully around. Most were older people and a few young couples hoping to buy cheap furniture, but it was pretty spare today.

It was as she proposed a race that her large grin became clear to him. She wasn’t’ entirely asking him about his team, but gauging how well he could run. “Here?!” It was the middle of a flea market in broad daylight. Why did she want to know how fast he could run? For someone who had thought buying a duck was childish, she was making game out of the blue like they were both in kindergarten.

Still, there was the allure of 5 dollars and gloating rights. The reward was there, and if she was offering, he felt he had a pretty good shot. The only downside was that Ellie was tall, and tall people usually could run faster. He could only hope that she had some disadvantage like smoking or severe bone loss that would help him out. What are you talking about? You’re on the track team. You can do this! He smiled and set his bag down, already taking off his jacket.

“Fine, but don’t go crying to me when you loose.” He couldn’t believe he was doing this. Maybe he really did need to grow up. Ah, Phooey on growing up!

Ladon stretched a second before crouching low and getting into position. She already pointed to where he had to go. "Ready?" No turning back now.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 30, 2010 8:26 pm

"Awesome! Knew y'wouldn't let me down, Shepard!"

The girl laughed a bit, and when the boy teasingly told her to not cry, she laughed even louder. "Oh god! Why th'ell would I be cryin'? Only lil' girls go cryin' t'mama!" That, and guys who were in reality just pussies, but she figured that was a given.

As if she was in P.E. class (which she technically did not have to take as a Junior, HURRAY), she began to stretch slightly, lifting one leg in a flamingo-like fashion and holding her foot up along her back. After a bit, Ellie switched legs before she got into a casual starting position. It was obvious she wasn't on the Track Team. Her stance was way too informal to give her a super fast start. However, as she glanced down to the shorty, she mused that her longer legs would help her a bit.

At least a bit.

"Yeah, on th'count of three. One. Two. Three!"

And the race had begun.

After seeing Ellie’s starting stance, he couldn’t help but feel cocky. Her form was loose and he felt proud of his own training that constantly practiced start, pace, and finish. Sizing her up, he felt more and more sure that he could win the race, and while she counted down, felt his body build up and get ready for that final go. Just like any other race, but here he only had Ellie to contend with, a girl that he knew would really take gloating to an extreme if she won.

He wasn’t about to let that happen.

On ‘Three’, he finished with a “Go!” as he shot off. The thing about the flea market was the dangers of people jumping out and the fact their makeshift track was a narrow walkway between booths. He kept his eyes peeled for any obstacles, but made sure that his goal was always in sight. Get too distracted and your focus would wind up getting you to forget about breathing, your pace, and what you were ultimately aiming for.
