The grey stallion slowly loped along the riverbank. Occasionally he stopped for a drink from the clear water or a bit of grass to eat, but his mind was firmly set on the task at hand. Somewhere nearby there was another herd. There had to be. He had followed the river for miles and hadn't seen any signs of another horse until now. A few feet on the other side of the shallow river were prints of another. Finally! He thought.
Vengeance had set out trying to find out how many other horses and herds were in the area. He also knew that Thanos would not be pleased if he didn't have anything to report. Slowly the stallion made his way across the stream and to the other side. The prints looked relatively fresh. It was possible that they belonged to another of his own herd, but he had just reached the borders of their land and doubted that any of those lazy bags of bones had actually come out this far. The stallion examined the tracks and then set off to follow them.

Rowan had wandered off from the herd, not to defy Thanos but more in a search of something to do. He intended on being useful to the leader and as such he thought the best place to start would to be scout out the immediate around around the herd new home. Well that had turned into a much larger walk that he had expected. There was a small river that cut through the land and that he decided would be the best place to search for any evidence of other horses or herds. The sooner he could find them the sooner he could report back to Thanos and hopefully win some brownie points with the stallion.
So far there had been little to no evidence of other horses, but he was determined to not give up. Where there was water there was bound to be horses, or any other animal for that matter. His roped swayed back and forth as he trotted along the river until he caught a sound. Ears swiveled around to listen better. Something was coming up behind him, but still a good distance away. He slowed his pace and turned his head to look to see what it was, but he could see nothing so far. Coming to a stop he focused on the river behind him as the sound slowly got louder.

Vengeance could hear the sound of hooves crunching twigs just up ahead of him. He knew the other horse was just ahead and he needed to stay hidden. If he could follow this foreign scum back to it's herd he could then count their number and let Thanos know.
The grey stallion slowed his pace until he could see the horse before him. Was that Rowan? Vengeance snorted in surprise and then quickened his pace to meet the other stallion. 'What the hell?' He grumbled to himself. What on earth was the other stallion doing out here?
He slowed his pace as he reached the other stallion and then came to a halt before him. "Rowan right?" Vengeance knew the stallion, but had never been very clear on names. All those years in Hell had definitely done a number on his memory. "What are you doing all the way out here?" His words were a little sharper then they should have been, but he had an idea that this stallion might just want Beta just as much as he.

Rowan snorted as the other came into sight. Vengeance. He stood still as the other came up to him, wondering just what the stallion was doing out here. "Yeah." He replied when Vengeance questioned him about his name. Well at least this one wasn't as forgetful as Thanos. When the grey asked him as to his reason for being out here he let out another snort. "I could ask you the same question, Vengeance." His tone matched Vengeance's to a tee.
After a few moments he spoke again. "If you're looking for Thanos he isn't out here." Rowan knew full well that Vengeance had gone off to speak with Thanos alone, no doubt trying to suck up to the stallion after what had happened at the meeting when the herd first came out of Hell. In fact Rowan had taken advantage of the fact that Vengeance was busy with Thanos to get a head start on scouting around.

Vengeance wasn't particularly happy with Rowan's reply. How was he ever going to be a Beta if everyone was always questioning him? 'You're not there yet.' He reminded himself. He was forgetful, but not that much so. "I'm out here scouting out the local herds for Thanos." He sneered a little and stood a little straighter trying to intimidate Rowan. Perhaps the palomino would scurry on home.. he honestly doubted he would though.
"Though that doesn't tell me why you're here." How cute, he thought. The palomino stallion was probably out here doing the exact same thing. Trying to beat him to it. Well, it hadn't worked and Vengeance wasn't about to let Rowan beat him.

Glancing around a bit Rowan's eyes finally settled back upon the other stallions. "And how is that working out for you?" He asked, knowing that he himself had seen no other horses so far. And clearly Vengeance was following his hoof prints thinking it would lead to other horses but instead lead to Rowan. For a few moments he studied the other stallion. They were about the same size, similar built and from what the other said were both looking to get on Thanos' good side to move up in the herd.
Rowan just couldn't have Vengeance beat him to that. No he would reach the top first, doing whatever it took. "I was looking for others." He told Vengeance blandly in his gruff voice. Why did he have to run into this stallion out here. If it had have been any other herd member it wouldn't have mattered as they were all useless. But no it had to be Vengeance, damn him.

Vengeance wasn't exactly pleased with his progress. Other than the first herd he and Thanos had encountered, he hadn't spotted anymore outsiders. "It's still a work in progress." He snapped at the other stallion quite irritated. At Rowan's next words he brightened up a little. So, he was right. The palomino had been out trying to weasel his way into Thanos' good graces. Well, at least Vengeance had actually spoken with the leader. Perhaps that would gain him an extra boost. He'd be damned if he would allow Rowan to take his place as Beta.
"How is that working for yourself?" Vengeance asked, knowing quite well that Rowan hadn't found anymore evidence of another herd then he had. The grey stallion had made it his personal goal to humiliate Rowan as much as possible, even if there wasn't anyone around to see it. Pitty, that.

Rowan's ears flattened back for a moment. Well this was just turning out to be such a great time, he thought. Vengeance was already acting like he was Thanos' right hand man. Like hell he was. They had only been out of Hell for such a short time that he doubted such a thing would happen that quickly. With a flick of his tail he studied Vengeance for a few more moments before answers. "About the same." He replied in his gruff voice though it had a hint of annoyance in it. Well at least neither of them had so far found what they were looking for, so Rowan counted that as a victory...well as close to a victory as one could get in this situation. "Why don't you just head on back to the herd now. I have this covered." Well if that didn't get Vengeance going he didn't know what would. They clearly wanted the same thing and he wasn't about to give in just because Vengeance wished for power as well.

The grey stallion almost chuckled as Rowan suggest he leave. Instead he simply snorted. "Do you really think I'm just going to leave and let you handle this on your own?" The thought was enough to make him laugh, although he doubted that would do him any good at the moment. He needed to figure out how to finish up his work without this palomino pest in the way.
Then again, what if Rowan ran back to Thanos and ruined all of the progress that he had just made? Vengeance just tossed the thought aside. He doubted Thanos would be stupid enough to trust some stallion he had barely met. Sure he still didn't really know Vengeance either, but at least they had actually talked.
"Why don't you run along and let me handle this?" He told Rowan. "Thanos sent me out here and I intend to finish my work before I go back." Well, it was mostly true. To be honest, Vengeance had volunteered himself for the job but in any case Thanos knew where he was and what he was supposed to be doing. If he turned around now and went back without any information, well, he wasn't entirely sure what would happen.

"It was worth trying." Rowan said with a shrug. He knew full well that Vengeance wouldn't have left to go running back to Thanos. No that would only give Rowan the advantage. Or perhaps it could backfire in his face and Thanos would be none to pleased to find one of his herd members had wandered off. But he was doing the leader a favor without being told to do so. That show initiative damnit.
Rowan let out a snort at Vengeance's suggestion. What did the grey stallion honestly think he would fall for that. Oh yeah, he thought, let me just return to the herd without anything to show for my wandering, like hell. "Look buddy," he said mockingly. "I was out here first I think I can find them before you do." With a shake of mind he let out a small laugh. "Besides by now Thanos will have forgotten about sending you out here so you can go on home princess." Great now he was insulting his own leader. Well thankfully Thanos wasn't around to hear that.

A frown quickly replaced the smirk Vengeance had on his face. He didn't like what Rowan was saying, not at all. The palomino stallion did have a point. It wasn't exactly a secret that their leader's thoughts weren't always there. God knows how long he'd been in hell and what it had done to his brain. As it was, there were some things that Vengeance still didn't remember. Although he had thought he'd bonded with Thanos over that common interest, or at least he thought so.
Should he go back? Maybe it was worth it to return and report then go the other way. Vengeance cleared his mind. No, that would not do. He'd been told to patrol and so he would. Rowan was just simply trying to trick him, mess with his head. "Good try, but I'm not giving up that easily pal." He sneered as he spoke. He'd be damned if he let this creep outsmart him. "Why don't you go back and be a good lap dog. Maybe get kicked around a bit? I'm sure Thanos could use you for his own amusement in some way."

"Lap dog huh?" He said with a shake of his head. "Oh poor Vengeance, you have me confused with yourself. If anyone is Thanos' lapdog it is you. After all were you not just sucking up to him before you came out there?" Resting his back leg in hopes to relieve some of the pressure the rope was causing he glanced at the sky. He didn't have time to sit around and discuss the finer details of their scramble to the top. No he needed to get going again, to find where the herds were and report back to Thanos before Vengeance did. "And if Thanos did want to kick me around I would willingly let him do that to get what I wanted." Rowan told the other stallion bluntly. Whatever it took, he would get to the top. If it meant killing off his competition, his eyes moved back to Vengeance, then so be it.

"I suppose I was trying to get to know him." Vengeance glared at Rowan. Even if he had been sucking up to the stallion he wasn't about to become a lap dog. He wanted power, and those who were kicked around didn't have power. "You'd willingly be kicked around? And honestly believe that that would bring you power? My dear Rowan, I don't believe you understand what having power actually means."
Vengeance then watched as Rowan looked towards the sky. Sure it was going to start to get late, but he wasn't about to leave. Leaving meant losing and Vengeance wasn't a loser. Perhaps he could pretend to leave? Let the stallion continue on with whatever it was he thought he was going to find and then go on his own way? Yes, that could work but what if Rowan found something that he didn't? That could create some problems for him. It would be bad enough if Vengeance went back empty handed. Worse if he arrived with no information when Rowan had plenty. No, he needed to get this Palomino to leave, but how?
"Perhaps I should get going back. I mean if you think you have this covered that could save me the time." He pretended to ponder for a moment. "Just more time for me to suck up and be Thanos' lap dog right?" Hopefully the threat would register with the palomino. It was a risky choice but what use was Rowan to Thanos? He had ropes hanging off of him all over, he'd probably trip one day and break his neck. Now that would be a sight to see.

"Perhaps you underestimate Thanos. Have you not noticed his lust for blood. Did it ever occur to you that he may respect those who let him kick them around? Perhaps in his twisted outlook that is what power means." Though Rowan honestly doubted that was the case, but one could never be too sure with Thanos. The stallion always seemed a bit off, perhaps distant. Could have something to do with the stallions poor memory. Well no he was just getting distracted by his thoughts.
"Yeah I guess you should run home to your master and suck up some more." He replied finally. Once again he didn't think Vengeance would leave. Well Rowan wasn't going to leave other than to continue on in search for what he had came out here to look for. "Maybe he will get you to babysit the mares while they gossip about starting families and which patches of grass are the most delicious. Wouldn't that be a fitting role for you."

This conversation was going no where. One of them would have to move sooner or later. Or outsmart the other. Maybe if Rowan wouldn't leave then he would have to? Or perhaps he could make the stallion leave. Yes, that could work. Vengeance stopped his thoughts for a moment and really looked at the palomino stallion. It might be a close match but he felt like he could probably take the appaloosa. If he was ever to be Beta then the rest of the herd would have to learn and respect him. If he had to earn that respect by force, then so be it. He had not come back from Hell to make friends.
"Well then, I guess I'll see you when you make it back?" He asked, adding a friendly tone to his voice, as if he had given up. Vengeance began walking then, never taking his eyes from the other stallion. He made his way around him, positioning himself for a good kick.
