This was, as far as Aggie was concerned, the Crisis of the Week. Forget youma, forget Negaverse agents, someone had moved the Geography section in her library.

Which would have been, you know, fine if she could actually figure out where they had moved it to, but as it was she was a fish flopping on dry land.

Really, really dry land. The sort of dry land that she could've had avoided by spending the day with her best friend, instead of rushing off to the library to get that new book on the geographical highlights of Croatia. But no, she had to be the first to read that book and now here she was, so lost she couldn't even find the gosh darn section.

Obviously, it was time to bug someone for help.

Supposing they hadn't moved the help desk as well.

The help desk hadn't been moved, but the person behind it was a little different this time. Normally, this time of day she was walking the aisles with books in hand, shelving them as best she could, surreptitiously caressing the covers. Libraries were wonderful places, Jada reflected, tapping manicured nails on the cheap wood of the desk.

It had been fairly quiet, so sitting atop the mail that was waiting for the normal desk specialist was a leather-bound book of poetry, well-worn. Her attention was on the book, the hand that was not tapping instead turning the pages agonizingly slow. She read the words under her breath, fixated on the rhythm of them.

Sidetracked as she was by her reading material, she had no clue that anyone was approaching the desk.

But someone was, even though the someone in question was fast losing her courage. Aggie was a regular at the library, certainly, but she was also the sort of person that would rather ask an adult for help than a fellow teenager.

Not, as it were, because she had any doubts in the teenager in question's intelligence (that was a very smart-looking book laying on that stack of papers after all, the sort you generally saw really clever people read and not sometimes-but-not-very-often clever people like herself) - no, the problem was that Aggie was a self-conscious sort of girl and adults were safe, but teenagers tended to have a tendency of judging someone. Even for their reading materials.

Which was why she was tripping on the balls of her feet and clearing her throat like an eighty-year-old asthmatic. In front of said desk. With a few facial twitches here and there.

"So, um, hi! H-how are you!" Yep, just nerves. A whole lotta nerves.

"All things were born./ Ye will come never more,/ For all things must die." she mouthed the ending to the poem, staring at it in satisfaction for a few moments. And then she heard it: someone was breathing very heavily and stamping around the outside of the desk. Without looking up at the person, she slipped a bookmark between the worn pages of the book, carefully closing the leather-bound cover on well-worn pages.

Finally, bright purple eyes raised themselves from Tennyson to fixate on the young woman in front of her. Reddish hair, light-coloured eyes. Mildly pretty. Not the point. "Hello." she smiled, careful to keep her voice as sweet as she could manage, not tinged with any impatience or disdain. After all, it was her job to help the patrons of the Destiny City Public Library. "How might i be able to assist you this afternoon?"

Why on earth was the child prancing about like she was afraid Jada was going to jump down her throat? If Jada did so that, she'd be in a lot of trouble, and she wasn't one to enjoy being chided like a naughty toddler. "I am doing well, thank you for asking. And how about yourself this beautiful afternoon?"

Okay, so far so good. Exhaling softly and trying (futilely) to work some of the tension out of her body, Aggie managed a smile that was a tad less maniacal than the one she'd been wearing before. "I'm, um, o-okay, thank you for asking!"

"I was just, uh, looking for a s-section. That moved. I think." She gestured to the right in a vague sort of way. Pretty girls intimidated Aggie - actually, scratch that, pretty people intimidated Aggie, but the girl had been nice so far (really nice actually, considering how odd she was acting) and she was currently caught somewhere between intimidation- and let's-be-friends!-mode.

It showed. She looked less like a serial killer on the run (thank you, involuntary facial ticks) and more like someone on dope.

Jada managed to avoid an involuntary facial tick of her own. She looked where the redhead pointed. There had been several sections in that general area. Though she couldn't think of anything- Jada cut off that thought before she finished it. That was uncharitable and beneath her.

At least the girl had finished prancing. Somewhat. Was she high? "Well, the library has been doing some minor changes to the locations of some of our books. Was there something in particular that you were looking for?" They had moved the biographies, some genealogy and a few other sections. Nothing off the top of her head jumped out.

"Geography." Wait, that'd been a bit too blunt, hadn't it? "I mean, um, I'm looking for the geography section." She attempted another smile.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 8:37 pm

She'd heard her the first time. And the second. "Ah." Jada gave her a smile and moved from behind the desk. "Right this way." she reached out to take Aggie's arm, the touching a habit more than anything personal. Should Aggie pull away from the touch, she would merely continue on.

The Geography section was still in that part of the library, it was just back. Much further back. After all, the only people it was really used by were students, and they were young enough to be able to walk. Jada guided the redhead past shelf after shelf, finally stopping at the second-to-last shelf. "Most of the books will be here. The books in the child's section for geography will be in the same location. Was there something more specific you were looking for?"

"No.. No, that's fine." Aggie hadn't drawn away from the other girl's touch - it simply wasn't in her nature to say no to someone who could be a potential future friend. So if the librarian (assistant?) wanted to hang onto her, hang onto her she could.

"Thank you very much, really. I d-don't think I'd ever have found it by myself. I mean, I've been here half an hour and I never even noticed it was right h-here!" She laughed a bit, and fiddled with one of her ribbons. It was farther away from the desk than the old section had been, but it still wasn't that far away - she should've been able to find it, honestly. "I'm s-sorry for disturbing your reading and everything.

"What, um, w-were you reading? It was a very pretty book." Commence phase two of the Friend Making mission!

"We've also made it a little smaller, I think?" Jada eyed the books critically. It didn't seem as intimidating as it had before. "Still, you aren't the first person to come and ask about a section, and I promise you won't be the last. So think nothing more of it." It was, after all, Jada's job to assist the people of the library (even if she weren't paid for her time) and she didn't want her first working experience to be marred: 'Fired from a volunteer position for poor customer service.'

Still, she was about to turn away, thinking her mission accomplished and Tennyson about to be back in her hot, eager little hands, when the girl spoke again. The question surprised her. "I was reading a book of poetry by Tennyson." phrasing it as a pretty book startled her even more. "It is a very old book as well."

Saying that might have made it sound like something ancient. The book, if she recalled, had been bound in 1909. Of course they had needed to re-cover it, but...

"Yeah, you have." The sigh was despondent as she, too, eyed the books in question. Why'd they needed to go and do that? The section had been fine as it was in Aggie's humble opinion, there'd been no need to move it - and least of all cut down on the amount of books it contained.

"I t-think I've heard about him before. In English class, maybe?" But she wasn't about to mope around when there were friends to be made! Moping around would come later, now it was navigating her way through a topic she had little to no knowledge of: poetry: "I-it certainly looks old. But not, um, falling apart or anything. Well-cared for?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:04 pm

Jada gave a little laugh at the girl's obvious displeasure in the cutbacks. "Look, come with me." again without asking, she pulled the girl with her, away from the geography section. As she guided the girl along, through a door marked 'Staff Only' she answered the other question. "That's correct. Tennyson was a 19th century English poet. As for the book, it has been well-cared for."

And yet she'd left it behind on the desk, unguarded and unprotected? What a weirdo.

"My name's Jada." She pulled the girl with her through another door. "Now, this is where they keep all the books they've decided to get rid of. Most of them are going to be donated or given away, but if you like, I'm sure they wouldn't mind you picking up some of the old geography books. Most of the ones the library is getting rid of are either in poor condition, missing pages, or outdated with obviously incorrect data. Still..." she shrugged, and plopped down in a chair. "I don't really know where the geography books would be though."

A woman peeked in, looking at Aggie in confusion. She looked at Jada and opened her mouth. "I'll be out soon. Cover the desk for me?" Jada asked the older woman before she could speak; the older woman nodded and walked back out.

"You'd.. really?" She'd gone along without question, not entirely sure what to say about Tennyson but pleased all the same that the other girl didn't seem to be making a bee-line away from her. But this...! "You'd really let me take them? And keep them? At h-home, like, without returning them?" Which was usually the definition of 'keeping something', but Aggie was too far gone in bewildered happiness to notice how silly she sounded.

Suddenly the younger girl seemed a lot more than just an intimidating volunteer. In fact, she seemed nearly goddess-like all of a sudden to the older redhead - giving away geography books for free to someone you'd only just met? That was totally a friend-like thing to do! Definitely, right?

"Oh! And, um, I'm Aggie. N-nice to meet you." She sent a beaming smile Jada's way, already ruffling through the stacked books. "And it's no trouble, I'll just l-look for them!" Obviously. She'd already started. Oooh, 'The Terrains and Trees of Ecuador'!

[[SORRY FOR BEING SUCH A BOOB and being so slow, RL has eaten my brain for a while. ;;; Should be back now! <3333]]

"I don't think they'll have a problem with it." Jada grinned at Aggie. "In fact, they'll probably be grateful to you for taking a few of them off their hands. This is a lot of books to have to find homes for."

The fact of the matter was, these books were completely useless, even to a public library. It was give them away or toss them; no one else wanted them.

The black-haired young woman took a seat, watching the redhead pore over the books. Most of the books were all in one section, Aggie would find. There were books in this pile Aggie hadn't even known they had!

"I guess you're right," The next smile the redhead sent Jada's way was tinged with adoration and the look in her eyes bordered on hero-worship, "I n-never really thought about that before. I mean, it's sort of sad to just throw out all these books when there's p-probably someone out there who still wants them, right?"

And that someone was Aggie, in this case. It was evident why some of the books were being thrown out - torn covers, blatantly wrong information - but some of them were real gems too, and the girl in question was in heaven. "Thank you so much, seriously, this is.. just, wow!"

Yep, Jada could now count her fan club as having gone up by one new member.
