He moved with steady steps that did not portray the nervousness that he felt. He knew, in his heart, that this was the right thing to do, despite the fact that his mind was questioning it. All he wanted was a friend. A dear friend with whom he could spend his days with.
He hated being alone.
He hated being afraid.
Today was the day to end all that. Today was the day to become part of something more. A pride. A family!
Altair had been gone for perhaps an hour since his painful farewell with Makhi, but now he had returned. His movements slowed as he moved inside the pride's boundaries and he kept his wits about him, looking for any sign of someone he could talk to about joining. About staying here as part of this family.

" Al- tair...? " Came a questioning voice as he moved deeper into. Makhi was confused to see the man still lingering here, and she was quick to try to pull herself together and look more presentable from where she had been slouched, practically dragging herself over the sand in her sadness. Though, she couldn't seem to get her ears to perk back up from where they were flattened against her skull.
" Have you gotten lost? " The smile she gave him was a bit strained as she stepped forward up to the male slowly.
It was an easy excuse, really. The sands of the desert could get quite confusing to many. She shuddered to think that she may actually have to guide him out... Watching him walk away had been painful enough. She ssin't know if she could actually bear to lead him away herself.

"Makhi!" He was startled at her voice to his side and turned to look at her. Just seeing her quickened his heart and brought a smile to his face. "Oh, Makhi! I'm so glad I found you! I wasn't sure whether I would or not and I really had no idea what I was going to say to the first person I met up with but..." He paused, realising he was just streaming off the first words that came to mind. It wasn't like him. He was normally composed.
He drew in a sharp breath to calm himself and stepped towards her.
"No...no, I'm not lost. I...I thought I might come back to stay...if you'll have me, that is."
What would she say? His heart was thumping.

Mercury eyes blinked slowly in confusion at the stream of words coming from his lips, trying to follow his train of thoughts as best she could with a bit of a nod here and there, before he finally cut off the words. He seemed so nervous over something.. What was it?
Her body froze in shock at first at his question as she peered up to him uncertainly, her ears finally perking up and forward with interest. Alair wanted to come back, and stay here?
For good?
It took her a moment to realizing she'd been staring and silent for far too long, taking a few quick steps up to him. " O- of course! Of course you're welcome to stay here, Altair. I-... I mean. All of the pride would be more than happy to have you here! "
She said quickly, with a bright smile on her lips.

He shifted nervously as she stared, obviously completely taken aback by this new turn of events. It had been both an easy and yet difficult decision to make. Easy because he wanted to be here with her and difficult because he knew the danger it might mean to him. And yet he couldn't help himself. He wanted to belong here.
"You do? They do?" He gaped, seeming somewhat innocent in his response. "I promise you, I will try to do all I can to fit in and make this word...I...I just realised that I can't leave. It's not what I want. To be alone...travelling endlessly, always looking over a shoulder to check for those who might want to hurt me."
He paused. "You're the only true friend I've ever had. I realised...it's too important to just throw away."

She ducked her head a bit in embarrassment at his excitement, and, even more at his words, the smile only growing on her lips. " I know that you'll be a wonderful addition to the pride, Altair. You're powerful, and loyal, and you'll make a perfect guardian... " She murmured to him softly, shifting herself up to give an affectionate lick to his cheek.
" And you're my dearest friend. It hurt so much watching you go, unsure I would get to see you again... I'm... I'm glad you've returned, and want to stay. " Shifting further in embarrassment, she finally lifted her head to peer up at the male before getting to her feet, moving to give him a good nudge.
" Come... Lets go back to the den where we can better discuss this, out of the sun. " It was quickly rising higher into the sky, casting heat over the sandy land. They could get more comfortable in the shade.

"I hope I will live up to your expectations." He replied, purring a little at her attentions. He was so happy at being back with her. And, with a nod, he followed after her, keen to get out of the sun and into some shade.
"I'm sorry I upset you so much when I left. Believe me when I say it was hard for me, too. I didn't want to go. I just...I was afraid of staying. But...I realised I can't keep running. I want to be happy and my happiness is here with you."
He paused. "Even still, I hope you can forgive me...if I had gotten my act together sooner than I wouldn't have had to put you through all that."
He moved alongside her, touching his face against her shoulder. "I won't be leaving. Not ever."

Her eyes half shut contently at his words, at his touch, that soft smile never leaving her as she tilted her head to gently lick his cheek before stepping ahead of him back into the cool shade of her den. It was easier to patrol from out of the cave than it was from the temple... But eventually with cubs of her own she would need to move... For now, it was more than suitable.
Turning back to the male, she settled herself down on the cool stone, peering up to him. " There's nothing to forgive, Altair. You changed your mind, and returned. You want to stay. That's what matters. You-... You can't even imagine... How happy that makes me... "
The female was quick to duck her head in embarrassment as she tucked her paws up under her, waiting for Altair to join her back in the den.

He moved to join her, purring very lightly as he settled himself more comfortably, grateful for the cool touch of stone against his stomach.
"I feel at home here already." He replied gently. "I never imagined I would be so lucky to as find a friend as dear as you." He paused, extending his forepaws and settling more comfortably.
"I just hope the rest of the pride will be as happy as you are."

" I've no doubt in my mind that they will be, Altair. " She murmured, mercury eyes peering up to him a moment as she lifted her head, before resting it down near him to relax after that near-scare. She was reluctant to sleep. Almost afraid he would be gone when she opened her eyes again.
But she trusted him. She would trust him not to go back on his word and suddenly change his mind, leaving without telling her. " We can relax for the rest of today. Tomorrow, you see your new home. Please, try not to worry yourself over it. " She smiled, shifting forward a little to nuzzle his cheek. " I'm sure everyone will love you. You're a wonderful person, Altair... Welcome home. "

He was a wonderful person...?
For a moment the guilt suffused him. He would try, at least, to live up to everyone's expectations. He would try to live the rest of his life without making any more terrible mistakes.
He smiled softly at the 'welcome home' and realised that this was what he had always wanted.
"Thank you." He whispered, feeling suddenly exhausted, mentally and physically. Tomorrow...tomorrow was going to be a busy day.
