I heard that it's going to be a law that abortionists are going to have to ask (depending on what stage the pregnancy is in) whether or not the woman wants a anesthetic for her baby before they abort it. Has anyone heard anything about this? I think if this was the case, more women would become aware of just what is taking place, and that the procedure could be very painful to their developing baby.

I never heard of it. But anesthetic is just going to make even more woman think about is o.k. and humain. Just makes it easier for them to abort just because they don't want it.

I would actualy think that if it has to have an anisthetic it will get woman thining that it is human and not want the abortion. I though th the whole point of proofing it isn't human is proofing that it can't feel pain

You would think so, but alot people only care about themselfs and if they would be in pain or not. Alot of them know it's a human and can feel pain but alot won't admit it cause then they know what their doing is wrong and that is selfish and their in denile about that. You read some post as listen carefully you can tell deep down they know. Why you think they attact others more? What do they think everybody is wrong? Because they don't want to admit the truth cause then they would have to face reality when alot don't want to or they have to take responablity of their actions.

I've heard of it... but it seems more of a scare tactic than anything to me for the very reason Pyro states.

If women think their fetuses can feel, they'll be disinclined to abort because that makes the fetus one step closer to being the equivalent of a born child.

If Doctors must ask if a woman wants an anisthetic, I'd like it if they'd also present her with the truth: Fetal pain is highly debateable and they may be capable of feeling it as early as 12 weeks or not until as late as 30 weeks or even aware of the pain as late as post-birth... Otherwise it just seems like unjustified propoganda aimed at scaring young women out of abortions.

I don't know about you guys and girls but using fear hardly seems like the right way to get women to consider fetuses as more than mere flesh. It becomes an issue of emotional manipulation rather than sincere education, and that just makes the entire pro-life side look more like zealots and less like activists (think PETA).

Well, organic pain can be felt earlier than 7 weeks. Psychological pain we're not sure if they can feel it until the mid-twenties. The difference between organic and psychological is...sorta like how when you touch a hot stove you automatically pull your hand away because your body feels it, but you might not have even felt it yet consciously. Your body reacts before you think to react.

I personally don't like this law anyway. I mean...it's basically saying, "We're killing a being that can feel pain, but to negate the fact that this being is dying, we're going to make sure it can't feel the pain and this somehow makes it more humane." I mean...if someone said to me, "You need to die now, but it's okay because it'll be painless," I'm not sure I'd feel much better about it. Why are they doing this to women? It doesn't sound like it'd do anything but set them up for emotional trauma.

Regardless of the emotional inpact on the woman having the abortion(not to belittle this impact, just to take a different angle) I think it would be irresponsible for a surgeon to NOT administer pain medication to a late term fetus.

The doctor has two patients during a pregnancy and is equally bound to both. Though an abortion provider is in direct dispute of the Hypocratic Oath, he should still be held to maintaing a certain standard of care for both victims.

We wouldn't imagine making a woman go through the procedure with no pain control, so why should we force the fetus to suffer that fate.

Also, fetuses and neonates(really infants up to a year) feel pain much differently than adults because their nerve endings are not fully developed. They feel pain much longer and more spread out than we do. Basically they feel all pain the way we feel stubbing our toe. The radiating sensation is due to the fact that we don't have very specialized nerve endings at the tip of our toes.

Regardless, I think we should administer pain medication to the fetus due simply to the fact that we do not know exactly at what point that particular fetus began feeling pain and can not possibly know the extent to which that particular fetus' nerves have developed. This is one case where it is better to be safe than sorry.
