Well, seeing as the game has now been out for just over a day, a few guild members have gotten the game the day of release (and have presumably played it), I figure now is a good time to see what our first impressions of the game are. (that and I'm waiting for my brother to get off the 360 so that I can play some more.)

First things first, the space hamster rocks.

Now that I've said that, I'm really disappointed with how the Citadel now looks. Yes, technically the Wards are now bigger (consisting of several floors) but everything there to me seems cramped and lacking. The Presidium has been reduced to just one room (at the moment for my playthrough anyway.).

Choosing to remain as the soldier, the game seems to punish the choice. With the removal of the overheat system, you're at the mercy of the thermal clips. Since you have no real talents as the soldier (you only have bullet upgrades really.), once you're out of clips you're screwed until you die & reload from the last checkpoint or until an enemy drops dead and luckily has a thermal clip on his dead corpse.

The HUD is pretty much non-existent which *really* sucks when you want to figure out at a glance what your status is, how you/your team is fairing, etc. Many times I had no idea how much trouble I was in until my screen was pretty much covered in the dark red veins that *isn't* a huge rip-off of what Call of Duty does. *cough, yes it it!, cough*

And not to spoil anything, but I'll say this: some characters that return from ME1 seems to have caught jerk-itous. You can be nice to these people and they could still act cold to you. (gee, sorry I was dead for two years!)
One instance I met up with an old friend from ME1, and everything was all hugs and warm fuzzy feelings, but the jerk turned cold with no prompting from me. (the jerk wasn't happy w/ the whole I was working w/ Cerberus for the moment and not contacting them for the two years.) I do hope greatly that this whole thing is resolved & fixed before the game's end.

But yes, I still love this game but I can't help but feel that the first is better at the moment. So first impression; Mass Effect 1 seems better so far than Mass Effect 2, but Mass Effect 2 is still a great game. (wow, this turned into a bit of a rant. sweatdrop )

I agree with you about the thermal clips, but there the agreements stop. Well actually I know what your talking about when it comes to the ME1 characters. But a message was sent to my cpu thing and that clears stuff up I guess. I too have to wait for my brother to stop playing so I can get a turn biggrin

Anyway, the game, I think, is incredible. There's a large improvement in the personalities of the crew. I enjoy Joker, and the combat is much more intense, I have to say that being able to move characters individually is awesome. I was playing at hardcore, but being as I am also a soldier, the damned enemies would get too close and I had not but my guns, which don't kill quickly enough(I switched to veteran on Horizen). I feel like they focused too much on the biotics in the game. Oh and to the blood veins on the screen, I have no trouble with. They know what games do that, and they know it would probably be more familiar to those fps gamers. I'm completely satisfied. biggrin

How far are you in the game?

I've been enjoying the mass effect world a bit more since my last post and I have to say that I have absolutely no problems with it. Every part of the game rocks!! ^_^
Even the thermal clips.

Major improvement from the first game in my opinion, it's great.

The only two problems I have with it are the thermal clips, I just drain the ammo fast.

Another thing I didn't like, I picked a soldier through my first playthrough because I didn't want to part with my assault rifle. On the second playthrough, I couldn't pick a new class. So I had to settle with a soldier with Slam.

I'm going to ******** your mind up
And you'll be writhing in pain
Stare deep into my scepter
Now you're goin' insane

I've beaten the game once already, working on it my second time, and I have a lot to say, I think...

First of all, this is going with my Infiltrator playthrough (playing as a Vanguard now and it reminded me why I love that class so much. Uber charge = Krogan decimation).

So, I liked the story. It's the main reason why I even got ME2 in the first place. The thermal clips gave me no problems at all and I enjoy the extra challenge. Conversations are better and the characters are pretty cool though I have mixed feelings about the truly new characters. Combat is more fluid and fun. The armor customization is pretty awesome. Visually.

And here's where the hate begins.

Let's go back to that "ooh, pretty armor!" topic... And why not put the guns in this complaint, too? Or, hell, the omni-tools and biotic amps, too.
Except, of course, that all of these categories are EXTREMELY lacking compared to the first. The armor, sure, it's cool and you can actually color it, but there is no light, medium, or heavy options (and therefore no Shield Boost skill; something I miss dearly). The guns just piss me off to no end as I, heh, had about three sniper rifles at the end of the game. Am I missing something or does the loot system just completely suck? I miss being able to actually modify my weapons instead of just purchasing upgrades that increase damage, give more ammo, and do a single special ability per gun. ********, I miss the omni-tools and the biotic amps. I miss my Kinetic Weave X upgrade for my Colossus Armor.
Upgrades don't cut it. They take away an element of strategy that the first game had (like, for example, OH s**t, THERE ARE GETH ATTACKING ME. WAIT, LET ME SWITCH MY AMMO TO TUNGSTEN ROUNDS. NOW THEY BE DEAD EASIER, HURR.) And no, the ammo powers don't really cut it, either.

Onto the powers and skills... Uhh... Well, I'll just say that when I first started playing, I looked at the skills and my jaw dropped at the lack of many skills that were in the previous game. Again, I miss my shield boost and my mass amount of biotic powers. I miss getting the special firing modes of different weapons. Because seriously, the Sniper Rifle's assassinate firing power was awesome. Having to use your cloaking device doesn't cut it.
On the plus side, I like how you have two different variations of the same power at the end of a power's evolution. That's about it, though.

Oh, right, the planet scanner... Okay, look, I get that the Mako was not everyone's friend, but I loved that thing for some sadistic reason I still don't know of. The point is, scanning a planet is just... So... Boring. Why not just improve the Mako? Or, better yet, let you pilot the shuttle? Because seriously, planet scanning feels like a chore. At least I could screw around in the Mako.

And the Renegade options are a mix for me. Most of the time they're completely bad a** and so worth it. Other times you're just a dickhead for no reason at all except to be a dickhead. From what I remember, being a paragon = helping as many as you can, while being a renegade = completing the mission no matter the cost. NOT BEING A d**k FOR NO REASON.
Or, for that matter, not being anti-alien.

The Galaxy map is so... Annoying now. They throw in the need for fuel and probes to limit your amount of credits as a sort of balance, yet it doesn't really work like that. It's kind of annoying and it makes me want the old map back.

The Citadel... God damn it, I'm not saying anything about the Citadel, I just loved it a hell of a lot more in ME1.

Oh, and your final party member (assuming you acquire the other party members before you do a certain story mission that places this final party member in your party) is awesome, but... Damn it, they promised so much more from that. So much more...

SPOILER (highlight)
So yeah, of course I'm talking about Legion. He's ******** awesome, but seriously, there are a few fatal flaws here. One, you find him, then you get him not even half an hour later. Two, no one even thinks to react to a Geth walking around planet side. Three, damn it, where was the hunt that Bioware promised?

Grah...
One final gripe... Is it just me, or does Bioware need to branch out to different genres at some point? I mean, KoToR was amazing, but Jade Empire = KoToR in mythological China. Mass Effect = Spiritual successor to the KoToR series. Dragon Age: Origins = Mass Effect with swords and magic instead of guns and biotics (aka blasters and The Force).

All of that being said and I still love this game tremendously. I just like the first one better. I hope developers can learn from Assassin's Creed 2, though, as THAT was a hell of a sequel. Just my two cents.

You try to run and hide
I'm gonna slice you in half
You try to gather up your army
Now you're making me laugh

Well, I got it today, and I'm about to talk to the illusive man. So far it's pretty good.

Oh, and my armor is pink. whee

So far i am enjoying it. The change with the combat does make it a little more challenging. I believe it is a step up. I only have one complaint though...the text is too small and makes it hard to read on my tv
PostPosted: Fri Apr 16, 2010 8:47 pm

I got a really good impression of the game soon as I started playing. I actually waited like a whole week after buying the game to finish my main character through his last playthrough in the first game. The combat system was of course the first thing I noticed and I thought it was way awesome.

I have no problem with the text on my tv, do you have an older tv by chance Slayer? I remember when I first got my 360 I had my old tv for a long time, and almost every game there was a lot of tiny, nearly illegible text all over the place. I couldn't even read what the names of the weapons I was using in Crackdown were, or read those files you find lying around in F.E.A.R. That tv finally stopped working right so I got an HD and everything was clear as clear could get, it was rather amazing for a while heh.

Overall, I'm impressed.

There is a lot of character developement, and its awesome how small things from the first game carried into the 2nd game (even if it was just and email). I really like the new weapons like the Carnifex Hand Cannon, Tempest Submachine Gun, Arc Projector, Viper Sniper Rifle, and the Collecter Particle Beam. The plot is cool, and really build on Me1's story. The armor customization is awesome, and combat is enjoyable. there isn't really a problem with thermal clips for me. The new squad member like Jack, Samara and Thane are really interesting in my opinion. Lastly, there are a lot more romance options in ME2

I don't like that you cant go anywhere on the Presidium on the Citadel except Anderson's office. Plus the lack of Kaidan/ Ashley in the 2nd game. If you romanced them in the first game they should have like met up with you before the suicide mission or something. I hope they fix that in ME3. Also, there isn't a crap load of upgrades for your guns and grenades. Last, you can't apply medi-gel to yourself when your almost dead, just to your squad!

This game is so much more streamlined than ME1. It's hard for me to go back and play it again!
