Cass was up to her elbows in flour as she rushed around the kitchen, looking for the ingredient she had forgotten to line up with the rest. She would have SWORN it was right there a minute ago, and now she couldn't find it at all! She cursed mentally and shoved a hapless kitchen helper out of the way as she went to check one of the other counters for what she needed, leaving floury handprints on their back. The little jar she had been looking so hard for sat innocently on the counter, its lid beside it, and Cass beamed in triumph as she grabbed it up and looked inside of it as she walked back towards her workspace. She stopped halfway there though, as she looked inside the little jar, only to see that it was completely empty. "Augh!" she cried in annoyance, earning her many worried looks from her fellow cooks, but she hardly even noticed. Cass' hot temper was well known in the kitchens and so people quickly moved out of her way as she dashed from the kitchen and down to the storage chambers. She had to add that sweet spice soon or the dough would become absolute mush and she have to start all over again...
Ten minutes later, she rushed back in, little jar refilled, and scattering kitchen staff right and left as they jumped out of her way. She reached her station on the baking part of the kitchen, slamming the jar down as she did. She grabbed a pinch of its contents to add to the dough, but stopped as she realized that it was all too late. "No! Argh! Sharding...Guh!!!" The petite girl grabbed up the dough and threw it into the trash bin with surprising force that sent it rocking. The little blonde girl fumed a minute or so longer before she took a deep breath and started back to work, restarting the whole process, making damn sure she had all her ingredients at hand this time, and that someone didn't come by and take them again. If she ever found out who did that she'd break their sharding fingers!

From nearby a pair of voices chuckled in unison, their tones so similar that almost sounded like a single voice. It was very clear that they were laughing at the young woman's misfortune but their mirth wasn't cruel, it was more like amusement was what they were seeing in the wake of all her tragedy. The laughter was short, not extended as though whoever was making the sound felt like this was worth laughing until the point of tears over, and almost as soon as the chuckling had started it stopped. It was quickly replaced by the soft sound of whispering to one another, both voices so harsh in their tones that it was still hard distinguishing one from the other.
It would become clearer which voice belonged to whom if the girl ventured closer to its source, a pair of figures sitting on small chairs with a heap of potatoes spread in front of them. It looked as though one had drawn the duty of aid in the kitchens and was there because they had no other choice, while the other one merely looked as though they were there because they had nothing better to do. The one who looked peeved was a bit younger than the one who looked more good-nature, though if one were to look closer they would be surprised to find how similar this pair looked. Despite having vastly different hair colors they were quite alike in terms of facial shapes, leading anyone to believe they could be related.
"It's not really polite to laugh at other people, Yulu. They can get offended."
"Like you're one to care about offense."
Although it sounded like the older one was scolding the younger it was probably something more along the lines of mockery, as they both chuckled again at some hidden joke. If they were upsetting the blond who had just ruined her bread, they didn't care.

Cass certainly did hear the muted laughter from the corner, narrowing her eyes as she kneaded the fresh dough. She'd show them to laugh at her...right after she'd put this bread in the oven. The girl was quite kind in her nature, most of the time, but she detested being laughed at. Her new recipe had just been ruined because some careless clutch had run off with, and then used up, one of her ingredients, so she was hardly in a mood to be her normal chipper self. It wasn't long before the dough had been cut into sections and carefully placed on a baking tray before being set to bake. Cass quickly went about the ritual of cleaning up her space while she waited. It would be at least an hour before the bread was done. She carefully wiped all the excess flour from her space and into a bowl with a damp towel. The dough was such that she'd had to use quite a lot to keep it from sticking to the counter. As her bin was full since she'd tossed the old dough in it, she made her way across the kitchen and towards the bin on the other side so she could dump out the contents of her bowl. Her path, coincidentally took her past the candidates or whatever they were peeling potatoes. 'Coincidentally' she just happened to trip over a potato...the contents of her bowl flew into the air...and promptly covered the two potato peelers in flour and scraps of sticky dough.
Cass felt a sense of release as she watched it happen, like she had let out her pent up frustration all at once. It was quite a nice sensation. It wasn't really them she was upset at...more like she was redirecting her pent up anger at a more readily identifiable target. The people that had laughed at her.
"Kyaa! I am so sorry!" she cried as she 'regained' her balance and looked at the mess she had made of the two of them. She was quite a convincing actress. No one in the kitchen could claim it looked intentional at all...never mind that it had been.

Oh, was this girl ever so lucky that the man with the red hair was there. Boy, was she ever so lucky.
The moment the flower and other items came into contact with Yulu and L'pin the brown-haired girl was on her feet, ready to get into a brawl that would probably end all hopes of ever setting foot on the sands. She didn't care if this girl was younger, she didn't care if it had been an 'accident' and she didn't care that they were in a kitchen full of other people. Yulu simply was living and probably seeing red, her body taking a few steps towards Cass before a pair of strong arms came underneath her own and lifted her off the ground.
"Shard it L'pin, let me down! She did that on purpose, that little-"
Yulu kicked her legs that were a few inches off the ground, her toes unable to touch even when she tried to wriggle her way free. L'pin was simply too strong for the smaller girl to even have a chance, and his few inches of height was more than enough for her him to get her into the air and away from this girl before the pair.
"Yulu calm down. This is hardly the time or place to be acting like a child."
L'pin's voice didn't even have a shred of upset in it even though he was coated with the same things, instead a laughing smile and sort of merriment played out in his voice. When the girl in his grip struggled harder he only squeezed her tighter, finally causing her to gasp for air after she realized that his hold on her was limiting how much she could breath in while yelling. The flailing stopped slightly, and then completely, but the man with red hair did not let her go.
"I know you probably think it was an accident, but you should apologize too you know. I was watching you."
L'pin's words were directed at Cass herself, his eyes open and gazing at the smaller girl as if he were studying her.

Cass actually jumped back in surprise, dark eyes wide. Sure, she'd known the pair would probably be upset, who wouldn't after getting covered in flour? But when the other girl launched herself at Cass, the blond found herself caught completely off guard. Thank Faranth that boy seemed to be pretty quick on his feet or Cass's cute little face might have been marred by a bruise, or worse, a broken nose. Realizing that the man had a good grip on the rather terrifying girl, if you could call her a girl (what was with that hair cut? And those clothes? blech), she gathered her wits again and put her hands on her hips and faced down the pair of weyrlings. "I did apologize! A little flour is nothing to get violent over." She grumbled, pouting slightly, brow furrowed. She sniffed and spun on heel, snatching up a couple of towels and dampening them a bit before returning to the pair "Here, clean up with these." She said, offering them to the boy, keeping a wary dark eye on Yulu as she did so. The dragonrider had a few inches on Cass, and not to mention body mass, so she was wary, ready to duck and run if need be when L'pin released her.

"Thank you kindly."
L'pin stayed smiling as he took the towels with a free hand, his elbow still holding Yulu in pace and his arm doing a good job of keeping her there. She'd stopped struggling for the most part and it made it easier for him to hold her without having to strain, though it was still clear he couldn't let her down without some form of action happening. He placed one of the damp towels on his shoulder and proceeded to begin wiping Yulu's face with the other, the girl's face turning red with horror at what he was going.
"SHARD IT PUT ME DOWN. I can at least wash my own face, you sharding-"
She started to flail again, the man putting both his arms around her once more to keep her steady, and although Yulu's face was fuming L'pin still had that calm, smiling look about it. He was the type that wasn't easily bothered, or so it seemed, but then again with a dragon like his he couldn't afford to be.
"Language please. And I'll let you down if you promise not to hit her. She says it was an accident and as much as you don't believe her you can't take it out on her. There are eggs on the sands you know."
Yulu frowned and muttered something about being well aware, also stating she wouldn't do anything if she was let down, leaving L'pin to finally put her on the ground and hand her over the wet cloth. The girl kept her glare straight at Cass as she started to wipe what L'pin had missed off her features, and the red-haired man himself started to wipe down his face as well. When he had finished he gave another word of thanks, handing the rag back towards Cass.
"We're sorry you had to lose more of your bread. It must be tiresome having to do the same things over and over."
"Speak for yourself."

Cass watched with a form of fascination as the dragon rider managed to juggle both the girl, and the towels without dropping anything. She had to clamp down hard on herself to not burst out laughing at the way Yulu's face turned a rather astonishing shade of red when the man started scrubbing down her face with a wet towel (an action which further surprised Cass. quite the strong man wasn't he?) As it was though, Cass bit her lips between her teeth to keep from laughing, lowering her eyes to hide her mirth. Normally she would not have gone through such precautions, but with someone as obviously prone to violence as Yulu was, the petite girl decided she could sacrifice this one time to avoid getting a black eye, or worse. When L'pin finally let Yulu down, Cass kept a watch on her out of the corner of her eye just in case she changed her mind about 'not doing anything', but the majority of her attention went to L'pin. The small blond smiled brightly up at him as she took the proffered rag from him "Oh its fine. I managed to get them in the oven eventually." she said with a dismissive wave of the still damp towel. "I'm sorry you got flour dumped all over you...I know, do you like sweets? We have a few pastries that just came out of the oven if you would like one? It hardly makes up for the mess, but..." she gave a helpless shrug with a 'what-can-you-do' sort of smile while she pointedly ignored the ugly glare the other girl was still giving her as she cleaned up.

"I must say I'm not overly fond of sweets, but I do enjoy them now and them. Shamth and I very rarely get indoor like this so I'm often away from the kitchens when things are made, and because of that it's been a long time since I can remember eating anything sweet."
L'pin took a point to look over at Yulu and make a remark that her face was still quite covered in flour despite it obviously being clean, his companion turning her nasty look towards him instead as she went back to wipe over a perfectly clear face. He was most likely trying to keep her busy until her temper somewhat abated, a task that he appeared quite good at. What exactly was the relationship between these two?
"I don't mind eating anything you offer, but you must make sure to give some to Yulu as well. She's just as unlucky in all of this as I am, and probably a little more than grouchy because she's hungry too."
"I'm not grouchy L'pin, nor am I hungry."
Yulu snapped at L'pin as she finished wiping her face for the third time, her hand holding the rag out to Cass but her face still looking over at the rider. While her overall expression didn't indicate she was mad, her eyebrows not scrunched or her eyes not narrowed, it was the snap in her voice that could probably indicate so.
"I also do no like sweets."

"Well, if its been awhile since you've had something sweet, than you must try one of these, they're quite good, and made with fruit." She told him cheerfully with confidence. Of course they were good, she had made them herself after all! "And I'm sure I can manage to find something even your friend would like." She told him, raising an eyebrow at Yulu as she took the towel from her and went to the opposite side of the kitchen, depositing the dirty cloths in a bin for just such objects on her way. She reached the far counters where they put freshly baked items to cool, sniffing appreciatively at the savory scents that emanated from them. She looked over the selection thoughtfully, grabbing up one of the sweet pastries she had made earlier that day. The dough was wonderfully flaky with a fruit filling, not overly sweetened, rather, it took advantage of the fruit's natural sweetness. She looked further and spotted some fresh rolls, seasoned to give them a nice herb-y flavor that surely someone who didn't like sweets would appreciate. She grabbed up her other choice and went back to L'pin and Yulu, smiling. "Here, try these. Tell me what you think." She said, offering L'pin the sweet, and Yulu the bread. She had grabbed a second sweet for herself, and took and eager bite, relishing the cool, fruity filling, smiling to herself from around the pastry. "So what brings the both of you here?" She asked conversationally "I'm sure we were only scheduled to have one person peeling potatoes tonight." Cass pointed out, wondering what their relationship? She was pretty sure now that the girl was a candidate, and the man was obviously a dragonrider. Lovers? Probably not, they didn't act like it, and they looked far to similar. Siblings? Cousins?

"We're not friends."
Yulu's little call of denial about their relationship probably went unheard by Cass, the young woman scampering off, though L'pin had certainly heard it. He didn't look the least bit upset, his silly smile still staying on his face, and he even let out a light chuckle of sorts as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Don't say that, it hurts my feelings."
He chuckled again, the sound still continuing by the time Cass returned with the promised sample items. Yulu had shifted her stance while Cass was gone, to one where her arms were crossed over her chest and her whole body seemed to seethe an air of irritation, though L'pin at her side seemed to be more fluid and open about his general mood. When presented with different types of food to eat both managed to say thank you, Yulu's more a grunt, and the man took a deep bite of the object in his hand.
"Oh, this is quite good! Did you make it yourself?"
L'pin broke a piece off and held it out to Yulu, grinning ear to ear as the woman glared at him from where she was eating her piece of bread. The fact she hadn't said anything at all indicated she probably thought it was good, but it could also be that Yulu had felt her time speaking with Cass was over and amounting to nothing. There were other options but they didn't need explored.
"As for why we're both here I happened to bump into Yulu on my way to coming in. She was off to do something else and I drug her along with me, figuring I could use the company. It gets a little boring and lonely peeling potatoes without someone to talk to, and even Yulu is better company than no company."
"Shut up. Either we're here to talk or we're here to work, I'm not going to do both with you. I'm only here really because Song enjoys seeing Hinalle and you know that."

In fact, Cass did hear yulus comment, but discarded it. Even if the two weren't friends, they must at least be friendly. After all, the girl hadn't punched L'pin in the face when he'd grabbed her to keep her from attacking Cass. So there must be some sort of bond between the two. Besides, who couldn't be friendly with L'pin? He seemed very nice. Understanding to say the least. He'd hardly blinked when she'd dumped flour on him, which was something she felt mildly guilty for, since it was obviously Yulu who had been doing the laughing. Ah well, she'd apologized, so that was that!
"I did bake it!" Cass said with a proud smile "I'm glad you like it." Looking from the friendly L'pin to the irate looking Yulu, the blond rather wondered at his choice. Was someone like Yulu really better than no one at all? She certainly wasn't entirely convinced of that, but she figured that was the weyrling's prerogative if he wanted to keep company with such angry women. "Ah...I see." Was all Cass managed. "Well, I should probably leave you to your work anyways, we'll need those potatoes for dinner tonight." she said with a cheeky grin.

"You're welcome to join us if you'd like, or do you have to go back to baking? It's good to have more conversation when you're peeling, and it's always a pleasure to meet such a pretty young face."
L'pin smiled again even as Yulu rolled her eyes, her back thankfully turned to the pair as the action was performed. She wasn't one for this type of chatter, she and L'pin actually having sat in silence for most of their activity before the laughter incident. She'd been keeping tabs on whatever seemed to be on the other side of her stool, since that's where her eyes flicked too as she moved back over and took a seat. She reached down and did something with her hand, though it was mostly unseen and she was soon back to holding the peeling knife in her hands.
"I'm not doing your share of the work as well L'pin, so either you and the baker get over here and help or I'm shoving off and leaving all of it to you. My feelings will not be hurt in the least to do so."
She went back to peeling, a thin roll of peel coming off without much effort, and L'pin frowned at her obvious lack of social skills.
"You could be talking to the future Goldrider you know, it wouldn't harm you in any way to be friendly towards her. It wouldn't benefit you either since favorites can't be played, but it couldn't hurt."
Yulu ignored him.

Cass smiled at the compliment, pleased to be the center of attention, though she knew better than to let it go to her head. Especially with a dragon rider. "I suppose I can help you out for a bit." She said, pulling over a stool and perching neatly upon it. "The bread needs to bake a little while longer yet." She reached one of her dainty hands into her skirt pocket and pulled out a small, but very sharp flip knife. Taking one of the potatoes in hand she deftly peeled it, one long continuous strand of skin coming off and landing in the refuse bucket at her feet. The blond laughed at L'pin's comment, though, a merry sound at such a ridiculous idea "L'pin, you can hardly treat every woman you come across like that. We aren't all future gold riders, after all. If you treated us like we were, well, no work would ever get done and everyone would be mincing about like a bunch of startled wherries, afraid of giving offense." She smiled at him, though, showing that her comment was all in good fun. "Though if you want to treat me that way, I certainly won't object." She said with a cheeky smile as she skinned another potato and set it to the side. "Really, though, Yulu has as much a chance of impressing as I do." she pointed out as she grabbed up another potato, curious as to what the other girl was doing, noting her lean over and readjust something or other. She didn't say anything though.

"It's not so much treating you as a Goldrider as it is treating you with respect. This Weyr has a bad habit of viewing its women with distaste, something I fortunately never learned to do. I was raised well at the Hold and I intend to keep many of this values with me."
L'pin took a seat next to Yulu, making sure to keep room so that Cass would sit to the side of him an away from the scowling woman who was pressing through potatoes faster than he possibly could. Her skill with a knife probably came from her days at Healer Hall, but Yulu would only snap that she hadn't learned how to handle a blade to simply show off peeling spuds if someone brought that up to her.
"It'll be a warm day between before a dragon looks at Yulu. Or rather, that's what she says anyway. I believe she'll get a dragon in time, even if it's not at this Impression."
There was a slight glower from Yulu at this remark, and she once again glanced over her shoulder and down to the ground. Her face changed expressions for a moment as her hand reached down, both of them this time, and instead of coming back empty she held a just-waking golden flitt. It was silent as Yulu moved it from the air and onto her lap, its wings ruffling slightly as it tried to adjust itself into a better position.
"Hinalle is waking up too, you might want to deal with her before she gets pissy. Song says they didn't have good dreams."
She looked from L'pin down to the ground and the back up, her free hand rubbing the tip of Song's head using a gentle finger. Song's sleepy eyes whirled different colors as she enjoyed the petting, and Yulu let her gaze lift towards Cass with a smirk.

Cass blinked slightly at this idea. The women treated with distaste? True, the menfolk tended to get the longer end of the stick when it came to most things, but Cass hardly paid any mind. That's how it had always been, how she had been raised. "Its different where you come from?" she asked with an honest curiosity, still deftly peeling potatoes, but interested in what he had to say. She had never been out of the Weyr before, and being a mere weyrbrat and kitchen worker she rarely even got to see the visitors they got, let alone the chance to talk to them. The blond girl almost laughed, then, but managed not to. She had to agree though, she could hardly see someone like Yulu doting on a dragonet, face overcome with an expression of love...yeah...somehow Cass' normally verdant imagination couldn't quite manage to conjure that image. Before she could say anything though, Yulu had produced her little gold flit, and Cass felt a wave of envy wash over her, though she did her best to hide it. Kitchen workers were extremely low on the list of people to get firelizards, so neither Cass nor her birth mother had one, much to her disappointment. they were such pretty, useful little things... The blond shook herself mentally, sniffing slightly and re situating herself on the stool. Soon, if she was lucky, she'd have a dragon, and some measly little firelizard couldn't compare to that! "We don't allow firelizards in the kitchen, you know, unless they're delivering a message." She said with a little frown, not looking at Yulu, focusing more on the potato in her little hands.
