A few days of rest had turned into a month of rest. Strangely, Zana had chosen to stay behind when the rest of her family moved on. It hadn't been hard to say goodbye to her siblings, it had even been a sweet and loving farewell to her mother, but when it came to her father....Even now days later, Zana's eyes filled with tears again. Her heart had nearly broke saying that teary goodbye to her father, but her mind was made up.

Thinking of it made her realize...it was time to move on. She yawned stretching out as she looked about for the shy, blue male that she had been 'imposing' on. Truth be told, his odd yet quiet manner had grown on her. She had come to realize that he likely didn't speak because he couldn't...but it didn't really matter as they two were able to communicate and understand each others body language quiet well....but now it was time to tell him goodbye too...

One day seemed to blend into the other so quickly that within a few hours it had turned into a month. At first Kimya had been so concerned with proving Zana to be a devil in disguise that he had missed all the little things about her that he came to rely on now. The way she smiled, her dances and quirky little behaviors that made living a little brighter.

Kimya had left before the sun rise for her. Today he was planning on surprising her with something that he knew would shock her; an antelope. Fish was fine and good, but after so much of it he'd rather eat grass.

He shuffled his shoulder blades, stalking through the tall grasses of the hunting grounds closer to his prey. Just...a little... closer...

Her frown had grown as she searched all the spots she knew he liked to nap. A soft, sad sigh slipped form her muzzle as she looked up at the sun, she would have to leave now if she wanted to get any kind of distance today. Glancing around one last time, hoping for a glimpse of his bright blue fur, Zana shook her head sadly, " Good-bye Azul...I hope our paths cross again someday my friend."

She made sure the little present she had left for him, a fresh pile of fish along with a pretty whitish/clear stone she had found was easy to find in his favorite napping spot so that when...if he returned he would be able to find them. Hopefully, he would look at the stone some day and think of her.

Turning away before she could cry again, Zana set out from the little oasis at a fast trot. If she didn't leave now, something told her that she never would. Her long legs made her trot into something of a flat out run for most creatures. Soon only her scent would be left behind in the little place she had called home for a time, her foot prints leading away.

In the heat of the moment Kimya pushed his lean legs harder than ever before to catch up with the antelope. He's successfully failed at a sneak attack, but persistance was paying off. His chest was throbbing painfully until the moment he pounced on the prey beast and took it down. There! Zana would be so happy with him, he just knew it.

Through the clear happiness of the day he drug his kill back to their 'living' area and laid it out before padding around for her. With excited glee he checked the river, her napping spot and finally his own before dread set in. What...what was this?

Kimya glanced at the pile, but his attention was on the stone. He nuzzled it as his body started to shake. What kind of fool was he to get attached to a female?

The kind that was going to bring her back. He scooped the stone up in his maw and took off after her scent.

Zana choked on a sob as she ran. Go back you retard!! You were happy there! She ruthlessly pushed the thoughts away. She had a goal in mind, she had to know the story of her family, had to get to her aunt Ra and learn why she was so different from the others...yet...

Her steps slowed faintly as the smiling image of Azul popped into her head. He had made her feel safe and happy...but more than that, he had made her feel good enough. He didn't mock her lack of ability in hunting...instead he just happily dug into the fish when she provided them and never complained..

"I have to go..." she sighed softly slowing to a walk, her head hanging dejectedly, tail dragging the ground. Perhaps one day she could return..but he wouldn't be there.

Kimya couldn't run as fast as he had during the hunt because of exhaustion. Each step was grueling to him, but he kept on. She couldn't leave, she just couldn't!

His mane blocked his wild eyes from the wind. She was the only one who had ever seen him as something other than a curse. Even his father had written him off once he lost his voice. He couldn't communicate with anyone else other than her. Zana saw past all of that and could read him just as easily as if he had spoken. Hell or high water, he had to get her back.

In the back of his mind he had always known she would leave. She'd told him as much, but this was too soon. He couldn't handle it. His paws never slowed as he burned across the Savannah. There was one way he could get to her, one sure fire way, but he wasn't sure he could do it.

Digging deep in his core, he tore open his slaughtered vocal cords for one broken roar.

Zana's ears snapped around as she blinked, head lifting warily. The sound was full of pain and just a touch of anger, just enough to set her on edge. Slowing her steps, she turned towards the sound with a faint frown. That couldn't be....

"Azul?"

Trotting towards sound, Zana responded would her own echoing growl/coughing sound, tail twitching nervously. Was he really...he couldn't be coming for her? Could he??

Her heart jumped with a scarcely understood hope. She had come to care for the big male, more than she could even understand.

Kimya's stomach coiled as he hacked up a lungful of blood. His throat was on fire. Still the aching didn't stop him from picking back up his pace. If anything it added steel to his spine. The pain wasn't worth it alone. He'd gladly walk through the gates of Hell if she would join his side once again.

Tired paws carried him to the top of a knoll where he spotted Zana. His deep breaths were gurgly and he had to cough out the last bits of blood. Nothing broke the relief in his eyes. With a mottled roar he started his slow descent to her.

It had to be him! Who else could it be? She picked up her pace with a echoing roar of her own. "AZ!" Why was he following her? Was it just to say good-bye??

His second pain-filled call had to turning towards his direction, hurrying towards him, breaking through the tall grass just in time to see him coughing up blood. Her eyes widened in horror and alarm as a soft noise of pain escaped her before she hurried to his side.

"Az, what in the world are you doing?!"

It struck him as odd that she was giving a nickname to his nickname when it finally dawned on him. She didn't know his name. And how could she? He'd never been able to tell her.

Seeing as this was probably going to be the last time he could speak, he croaked out, "Ki-Kim...ya." He turned his head to look at her and mouthed, "Don't go." The worn out lion flopped down into a sit and spat out a wad of blood before taking a deep breath, wincing at the pain in his throat. Luckily he knew just what plants would make it better.

"Kimya? That is your name..." When he begged her not to go, her eyes widened in surprise. She made a soft noise of pain when he coughed up the blood, gently nuzzling his shoulder.

"Kimya, I have to go. I have told you..." She didn't want to leave him either, but she couldn't put off her quest. If she ever wanted cubs of her own...she had to know what cursed her family, why they weren't like the others. As it was she didn't dare even think of her own family not until she knew they would be safe.

"I have to find her Kimya, I have to!"

He nodded lazily and licked his teeth clean. At her nuzzle he responded by leaning back on her. At least now she knew his name, even if his suffering was in vain.

Kimya shook his head. Why go after some woman she'd never met? They had a perfectly good, safe life here without anyone to disturb them, let alone another female. He wanted to tell her as much, but didn't dare tamper with his throat more than he already had.

Emotions passed on his face; disappointment, fear and apprenhension. Finally he mouthed "Why?" because he could see how important it was to her.

Why? Such a simple question but one that held so many more questions. Her ears flicked faintly as she sat back on her haunches curling her tail around her legs. If she told him, would he understand? Would he turn away from her when he found out her family's secret? There was only one way to know...

Sighing softly, she looked down at her feet, " She is not just another lioness Kimya, I go to find my aunt. My family is cursed and I don't know why. One of my sisters, she is addicted to blood and pain. She lives to cause pain in others. My brother is cruelty uncontrolled." Her ears twitched softly as she remember the pains of her childhood.

"My mother says she know why so many of our line are born...wrong. I have to know, I have to know if I have cubs will they be cursed too some day."

Taking a deep breath, the travel weary lion settled down into a more comfortable position to hear her out. Just by her stance he knew it was something she'd rather not talk about, but he had to know.

His insides bubbled when she spoke of her family. If they were like this, then her Aunt may very well be the same way, but she had a point. For the sake of her future she had a right to know. Now he mouthed "Where?".

In the back of his mind he hoped that it was just a day or two away, then she could come back with him. In his heart he knew he was wrong.

"Far away, in the lands far to the north. She calls the land of the Dawnwalker's home. That is where I am headed." Her lavender eyes were sad as she watched him. "It is a very long, very dangerous journey but I have to go. I can't just..." She let the sentence trail off as she looked away.
